[newbie] faxing?

2000-10-05 Thread WallerRaknakce

Dear All, Is there a way to fax from a Linux box? I used to do that with
Windows often and I would like to set it up with Linux. I have Linux-Mandrake
7 Complete and a Cirrus Logic faxmodem 56k I believe. Would someone help me
set this up or lead me to info about doing so? Thank you. Sincerely, Marcia

Re: [newbie]ethernet card setup

2000-10-04 Thread WallerRaknakce

Dear All, It has been advised to me to use Pnp dump to configure my SMC EZ
10/100 ISA plug and play card. Could someone take me step by step through
that process? If that works would it be best to go to Linuxconf or netcfg to
finish? I looked at Netcfg and I cannot figure out alot of what they want
where. Their terminology is a bit different from the Windows IP configuration
that I have. Would someone help me with that, also, step by step? I am a true
newbie. I am impatiently waiting for my "Running Linux" book I ordered last
week. I hope that can help me, also. I am supplying again my card
configuation for Windows 95 below:

Of course I have an external cable modem and the brand I believe is

I appreciate all of your help. I am hoping to avoid doing a low level format
on my computer disks which I was told is the only way for my computer to
except a reinstall of Windows 95. I really don't want it back. I just want to
use Linux only on that computer. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you all
very much.

[newbie] Xfce and KDE?

2000-10-04 Thread WallerRaknakce

Dear Paul and All, Thank you Paul for the explicit directions for setting up
Xfce. How would I set up Xfce as one of my desktops and not to be the only
one? Actually I want to use KDE and Xfce. In other words I want to be able to
switch from one to the other. Those so far are my favorites. Any help will be
appreciated. Thank you. Sincerely, Marcia

[newbie] Using Wine to play a Windows game?

2000-10-04 Thread WallerRaknakce

Dear All, My husband thinks he is being deprived because he can't play his
Hearts game ( a Windows compatible game) on Linux. May I use Wine to play the
game? This is not the hearts game that comes with Windows. If it can be
played by using Wine how exactly do I do that? I am a newbie so please tell
me exactly what I do. Thank you for your help. Sincerely, Marcia

[newbie] Choosing different desktops

2000-10-03 Thread WallerRaknakce

Dear Anyone, As was suggested I did reinstall Linux Mandrake 7 because I
could never get the graphical login to comeup. Now I have it! I am thrilled.
However, I cannot figure out how to get into the other window desktops such
as xfce, enlightenment, etc. The choice is there but I can only get into KDE
or Gnome. Even trying as root did not help.

Also, how would I creat accounts with the other desktops so I can go in as a
user? Thank you very much. Marcia

Re: [newbie] sound and KDM graphical login manager

2000-09-21 Thread WallerRaknakce

Dear Alan and All, After my computer crash I erased the Linux partitions and
did a clean install of Linux. Everything went well until I came to
configuring X. I believe I just chose the wrong monitor and went into the
Xconfigurator and finally after many attempts got the right settings.
Everything is working well except for what I told you about sound and
graphical login. Even so, you may be correct about reinstalling the
Linux-Mandrake 7. I will consider that if I do not get these things fixed.
Thank you for the good advice. Sincerely, Marcia

Re: [newbie] Only one Linux book opens

2000-09-20 Thread WallerRaknakce

Dear Mark and All, I am trying to read the books in Linux. My crash happened
with Linux to begin with then in the process of trying to fix things I lost
my Windows 95 also. I have reinstalled Linux but have not been able to
reinstall Windows 95. That does not bother me. I am happy to have a Linux
only machine. I do have a laptop with Windows 98 that I just purchased before
the crash and I am using that for my internet access until I get back on
cable internet with Linux.

I have not installed Acrobat Reader and I would love to. Where do I find it?
I have Linux-Mandrake 7 complete.Will it be on one of those CD's? Also, I
would like to install it on my Windows 98 machine to read them there, also.
Thank you for your help. Marcia

Dear Alan and All, Thank you. That sounds like what I need to do. How do I
install that Linux tar file from CD#3? I have tried to install it before and
had no luck. I do not understand the tar procedure. I am a newbie so could
you or anyone explain step by step how to do this? Thank you very much? Marcia

Re: [newbie] sound and KDM graphical login manager

2000-09-20 Thread WallerRaknakce

Dear Alan All, Yes, I did the edit and changed it to id:5:initdefault: and
nothing changed except for one time the gui login manager came up for a
couple of seconds while I already was into KDE and then went away. It never
shows up at all now. Is there anything else I can do?

Sound-I did find the mixer last night and tried to open it. All I got was
permission denied. I changed the permissions which had worked on other files
when I did this but it did not change anything here. I have an ESS ES1868
plug and play audio drive and with an Input/Output range of 0800h-0807h. A
Genius Sound Maker 18PnP Series is also somewhere with an IRQ usage of 5. Any
ideas here? Thank you for your help. Sincerely, Marcia

[newbie] Only one Linux book opens

2000-09-19 Thread WallerRaknakce

Dear Anyone, When I put in my Linux Mandrake 7.0 #3 CD in order to read
some of the books only one book will open for me. This happened before with
my first install of Linux, too, before the crash. They all opened with
Acrobat reader under Windows 95. What do I need to do for this? Thank you.

[newbie] sound and KDM graphical login manager

2000-09-19 Thread WallerRaknakce

Dear Anyone, Before my computer crash 4 weeks ago I had sound working in
Linux but I do not know why it worked finally. Now after my reinstall
(without windows 95 this time) I am trying to set up sound and I just get
error messages when I try to do it through sndconfig. I went through this
exact same thing before and finally I just put in a musical CD after weeks of
going through this and I had sound! Now I tried the CD but no sound. Is there
anything else I can do? Yes, my card is supported and is on the list. It did
work before. It says something about device resource busy. Would anyone be
able to help me on this one?

My other problem is- now that I finally have X going correctly( I think )I do
not get the graphical login manager where you login and pick a window
manager. I can only login in from the prompt with startx then I get KDE and
Gnome. I would like the choice of the other window managers, also. How do I
get the graphical login manager to come up?
Thank you very much,
Marcia

Re: [newbie] Thanks for the help for the KDE problemo

2000-09-17 Thread WallerRaknakce

Dear All, Where would the kderc. file be?

I had alot of problems getting my Xscreen down to size. I went back into
xconfigurator, made some changes and it is almost down to normal size but not
quite. Does anyone know what else I can do to get it to normal?

Plus, My graphic login page does not come up now where I can login and choose
window managers. What can I do to remedy this?

Thank you for your help. Marcia

Re: [newbie] Xconfig help

2000-09-14 Thread WallerRaknakce

Dear all, Thank you for your help. I went back into xconfigurator and changed
the monitor and resolution. I also changed the mouse. It ended up working. I
was shocked. The graphics and fonts are slightly larger than normal but that
is the way I like it. My mouse works, too! My next job is to get the cable
internet going that I was set up with in Windows 95. After that I plan to set
up the internal Atapi zip drive. The Cd rom works fine and I believe the
floppy does, too. I did not do sound yet but finally got that to work when I
first installed Linux, so I am sure I will get it going again.

Not that I care that much, but is there anyway to access my Windows 95 or the
files that are hiding on my D drive that I cannot access right now? When my
computer crashed I lost access to it on both C and D drive. I tried
reinstalling Windows 95 before I tried reinstalling LINUX but it just would
not happen. I ended up reinstalling Linux on my C drive and I believe that my
D drive has the Windows 95 but I can't get there yet. Any help will be
appreciated. Thank you very much for your help. Sincerely, Marcia

Dear Anyone, I crashed my linux and windows a few weeks ago. Had a local
linux friend/expert help me to to reinstall linux-mandrake 7.0. Xwindows did
not configure automatically so he helped me do it manually. We got a huge KDE
screen and I do not know how to fix it. The font and graphics are huge and
the mouse does not work . He is not available to help me now. I checked as
much documentation and mail archives as possible I think. I have a generic S3
Virge card with 2048 memory and a high frequency SVGA monitor. What can I do
to fix it? I tried XF86Setup and that did not get me anywhere. I am a newbie
so please explain every detail. Thank you very much. Marcia

I did not try XFdrake. Can one use it at the Lilo command prompt? How do I
run XFdrake?
I did go through the xconfigurator again and got my mouse to work now,
however the screen, graphics, and icons are still huge and it would be hard
to see what is going on unless I can do it from a terminal window. Any help
will be greatly appreciated.Thank you very much for your help. Marcia
