[newbie] data loss - what's happening

2004-04-19 Thread Weiers Coetser
Hi

I'm running Mandrake 9.2 in a dual boot set-up with Windows.

On at least three occasions I've lost some of my working documents in
the process of rebooting. When I log out the Open Office Documents are
open, but when I log on they are nowhere to be found, not in my Trash or
in the place where I saved them last. I save frequently, so it is not an
issue of losing the document because I never saved.

Once or twice when I started Open Office, the filename was displayed and
I was asked if I wanted to restore the session or save it... I can't
remember exactly, but I think I chose both the options at different
times and each time the result was that the file dissappeared for good.

Does anybody have any clue what happened. I've lost some crucial data in
the process. What am I doing wrong?

Weiers

Why would you leave ANY applications running when you log out? By
logging out you kill those applications and any data that's in them...so
yes, you would effectively loose the data (or document) that you're
working on. You should always close/save applications/data prior to
logging off...

Try looking in the ~/.openoffice/usr/temp directory - MAYBE your
documents (the lost ones) are in there somewhere...

[newbie] Audio: Playing WMA (Windows Media Player) Files

2004-04-03 Thread Weiers Coetser
Hi...

Is there a way I can play the Windows Media Audio files on Linux? I've done
a lot of ripping of CD's recently on Windows Media Player. Now my Linux XMMS

Thanks

Apologies for Hi-jacking. I did not know.
Now the question is how I set my computer to receive the e-mails in a
threaded form. But I suppose nobody would be interested to explain how to do
that in Outlook express, since I still don't have a working modem in linux.

2004-03-10 Thread Weiers Coetser
I apologize for perhaps continuing too long with the modem issue on this
thread, and if I don't get a response I'll post it seperately. At just about
the same time that I got your (Anne's) response I received on from support
at smartlink. Her response is: You need to install 'kernel-source' RPM
package from Mandrake ftp or mirrors and use this installation path:
('/usr/src/linux-,version./include') as KERNEL_INCLUDES value.

Since I am still uncertain:

Can I install this kernel source RPM package from my Linux Distro CD's?

What do I include for the version section? MDK9.2 ? or is it the specific
kernal source version?

Thank you.

seems that it is a Winmodem and I cannot get the driver compiled.

OK - I'm no expert on this. If what I say here doesn't fix it for
you, start a new thread with a more specific title. I've been very
busy and skipping some threads - many others will be as well, so you
need a thread specifically about installing a pci modem from a
supplied .tar.gz file.

The first place that I get problems is when give the following
 commande: $ make
 KERNEL_INCLUDES=/path/to/linux/include

Try changing that to KERNEL_INCLUDES=/usr/include

If that produces any different output, just copy it to the new message
in the new thread.

Re: [newbie] Re: Re: Copying Files from CDROM

2004-03-10 Thread Weiers Coetser
I've started downloading the linux 2.4.24 kernel in tar.bz2 format.

I hope this is the right one. I see the latest stable one is 2.6.3.

I went into the Linux Programme installer and found a number of files
described as the Linux Kernel. I installed them, but suddenly my whole Linux
installation is messed up. Sound driver does not work, file systems arn't
mounting. It seems I'm going to have to re-install the whole business. I'll
first try to install everything and specifically select these kernel files.
If that does not work, I'll just do a default installation.

Tomorrow I'm going to borrow a friend's external Mercer USB modem. If it
works, I might considder saving up to buy my own.

Question: how do I edit the Makefile file in my modem driver directory. I
see there is a reference to the linux-kernel there, and in stead of typing $
make KERNEL_ path to root I could possibly put that path directly
into the Makefile.

I really thank you for your help on this akward problem. Any wisdom will do,
and I am definitely learnign a lot. When I finally get it right, I will make
sure that I help other people to do it as well.

No - he can't get his modem installed without the source file, so he's

2004-03-07 Thread Weiers Coetser
Hi Thanks again for the good advice.
Ok... I've tried again to install my modem driver: I got stuck shortly after
extracting the files from the tar.gz file. I try to give full details here:

I will be extremely grateful if somebody could tell me what I could do
differently to make it work.

I have an Aztech internal modem in my computer:
Model: MSP2900 56k PCI Modem

The installation cd has a linux tar.gz file in it: slmdm-2.7.14

I created a Modem directory in my home directory home/modem

Then I extracted all the files into that direcectory. So now my directory
structure is home/modem/slmdm-2.7.14

Files in that directory are:

amrmo_init.c
tax_init.c
mdm_params.c
slusb.modules-dist
amrmo.o
fax.o

sysdep_pci.c
editme.c

mdm.o
slmdm.spec
usb_st7554.c

I opened the console and for safety gave the 'su' command (It did not ask me
for a password because I did not register a system admin password when I
installed 9.2)

The readme file stated that I had to edit the Makefile to contain

KERNEL_INCLUDES=/path/to/linux/include

So I followed their suggestion and typed the following command in the
console terminal:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] slmdm-2.7.14]# make KERNEL_INCLUDES=/path/to/linux/include

The immediate response was four pages of commands, and because I am stil
typing this e-mail in Windows (because my modem is not installed in linux I
have to retype all the computer's responses here: will try to do so
accurately)

/lib/moudules/uname -r/build exists and points to the matching kernel source

Now coppy /boot/vmlinuz.version.h to
/lib/modules/uname-r/build/include/linux/version.h

When compiling make sure to use the folloiwng compiler option to use the

-l/lib/modules/uname-r/build/include instead of =l/usr/include/linux

Please udjust the Makefile accordingly.

[newbie] Installing My modem with tar.gz driver CD

Hi again

I really am still clueless.

I do now have an internal pci Modem (MSP2900) which has an installation CD

When I go to KDE's hardware set-up it shows the modem as well as my HP
Scanner under an unknown section.

How do I actually get the modem installed and working.

Here I need some very basic education. I am very used to Microsoft's plug
and play concepts and feel really lost because I cannot get the modem to
work.

Thanks

Interesting... I am still not sure if I am totally satisfied.

I've been able to set the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen to be linked

itself.

Could I place icons or shortcuts on one desktop without them being visible
on others?

Thanks for all the good information.

[newbie] Four Desktops

2004-02-29 Thread Weiers Coetser
Hi...

This is my third request for assitance and I've appreciated the input that
I've received every time.

I don't know if the following scenario is a posible one:

Lets say I've divided my work into four categories. I would like to use one
of the four KDE desktops for each of these four categories.

At the moment I find that when I place a folder on my desktop it shows up on
all four the desktops. This gives my desktop a very cluttered feel and I
don't really see the purpose of having four desktops in this case.

The same is true when I open several programmes. If I opened Open Office
Writer on Desktop one, I can still see the bar for that document at the
bottom, even if I am on Desktop two. If I have six or seven documents open
at the same time, I find it difficult to navigate my way between the
documents.

Is it possible to change a setting that each of the four desktops function
almost independently. Eg. I can put all my MP3 files on Desktop 1 and run
the MP3 Player from there. Then I place all my written documents on desktop
two, and all my spreadsheets on desktop three.

I hope my question makes sense. If it does not, can somebody please explain
again why there are four desktops in KDE.

Greetings
Weiers

Thanks: I Got it sorted out.
I did not notice in the past that I actually had to click or double click on
the HP 5L printer at the top in the printer manager window in order to
access the jobs for that specific printer. I just took it for granted that
since it is the only printer on my system, it would automatically show the
jobs.

My computer was set on the Generic Unix LPD Print System. I've now changed
it to CUPS. Would it make a difference?
