Re: [newbie] Problems

2000-04-13 Thread Zulfiqar Naushad

The problem is with Netscape as opposed to Xwindows. Somehow netscape
stalls on a page and the file called linux.ld.so (check it out in top)
takes up all the system resources, and Netscape effectively crashes, pretty
hard. The only way to recover is to go into a terminal and issue the
command kill -9 PID#

That kills Netscape and the errant linux.ld.so file.

Now, if I bring up a virtual terminal and look in the .netscape

Re: [newbie] Problems

2000-04-12 Thread Zulfiqar Naushad

The culprit is the linux.ld.so file.

It somehow either leaks memory, or mismanages the resources.

Re: [newbie] installing ICQ

2000-04-09 Thread Zulfiqar Naushad

What type of ICQ did you download?

The general rule for unzipping files is.

tar -xvzf .tar.gz

that will create the directory,

then go into the directory and read the readme file, every program has a
slightly different installation routine.

will tell me how to do it, in very easy steps, that would be helpful, much

there is a pay version from VMware.

2000-02-26 Thread Zulfiqar Naushad

Well, I am no expert, but I can try to help you a bit.

Firstly, this is what I do to get my Cable modem working.

as root run netconf.

Go to basic host information, then set eth0 to enabled, and select either bootp
or dhcp, so it will get the ip info automatically.
Also, then set the kernel module to the one that corresponds with your card.

What network card do you have? I have a Netgear FA310TX and that is tulip
compatible, so i just select the tulip driver and reboot the system, and
everything works fine for me.

Mohammed Bhimji wrote:

Also I followed some of the tips found in the archives, but no luck on
 getting the cable modem
 to function.

Corel Linux was nice in that way, it seemed to do everything by itself and
 the Internet connection
via cable modem was active right away...

Anyway any help would be appreciated!

Re: [newbie] ld-linux.so

2000-02-26 Thread Zulfiqar Naushad

I don't know either, but I have traced it down to NETSCAPE.

It seems like some library that netscape uses.

When netscape goes belly up, ld-linux.so doesn't get killed along with it,
and you have to do it by hand.

balut wrote:

What exactly does the process ld-linux.so do? The reason I'm asking is
it intermitently decides to use up at least 95% of my CPU cycles. Once
it starts, the only way I am able to stop it is to kill it.

 Thanks for any help

Re: [newbie] Mandrake and Different CPUs

2000-02-22 Thread Zulfiqar Naushad

Yes Mandrake will run on AMD chips.

Right now I am running 7.0 on a K6-233 with 3D/NOW

Pretty nippy performance considering the lowly hardware.

Mike Perry wrote:

AFAIK the K6 family of processors support the full pentium

However if Mandrake can use MMX instructions you wont get
that boost, but if it can use AMD's 3d Now you will get that.

Perhaps one of the "staff" could enlighten us about MMX and 3D Now?

Re: [newbie] Mandrake and Different CPUs

Mandrake will run Just fine on your K6-2/400.

I am running it on a K6-233 with 64MB of RAM, and extremely crappy
hardware, and it's flying.

I can do more stuff simultaneously than on Winblowz 95.

Most weird.

Try this.

run updatedb
then
locate lilo.conf

It should find it for you.

Re: [newbie] Hi

2000-02-05 Thread Zulfiqar Naushad

Quite easy actually.

Firstly, You need to make sure that your computer supports a bootable
CD.

Most new computers do support this feature, hence it shouldn't be a
problem.

Go into the BIOS and make sure that BOOT FROM CD is set to ON or
YES

Also make sure that the boot sequence in the BIOS is set to
CDROM,A,C

put in a bootable CD in your cdrom drive, hit the reset button, and let
the magic happen :-)

Re: [newbie] Telnet fix in 7.0 Theres got to be a better way....

2000-01-26 Thread Zulfiqar Naushad

Quite simple.

First edit the /etc/inetd.conf file and uncomment out the telnet line.

Second, type ntsysv from the command prompt as ROOT and then select inetd.

Reboot and you have telnet and inetd working.

For security.

edit the /etc/hosts.deny file and add this line.

ALL:ALL

then edit the /etc/hosts.allow file and add this

in.telnetd:XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

Where XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX is either the IP of a machine on your internal
network or some external IP.

What this does is deny all telnet requests except the one you specify.

:-)

Hope this helps.

Well I searched the archives on the telnet problem in 7.0 heres what I did:

1) I installed the telnet server per advice given by many here. That did
not make telnetting in work.

2) I reduced my security setting in the install to the lowest level. That
did not make it work either

4) I checked my inetd.conf to make sure the telnet service was listed and it
was.

5) Next I RTFMan pages like I should have done first, and learned that when
/etc/inetd is run, It watches for requests for services and starts them if
they are listed in /etc/inetd.conf For kicks and grins, I ran inetd and
telnet works! I realize that there may be security concerns doing it this
way, so two questions for you folks:

A) How do I get inetd to load on bootup?

B) How do I make it more secure?

Thanks and I hope this thread helps others.
