Re: [newbie] (...) FINALLY!!!
I would first look if XF86Setup is installed on your box, run the command: whereis XF86Setup, and if it isn't there then I'd look for it on the CD's and install it. It is a very helpful tool for people who don't want to go directly into the files to config. By the way; startx is a seperate program with it's own config file called startx, the file you edit when you run xf86config or XF86Setup is the file XF86Config. Good luck, ei On Monday 20 November 2000 15:13, Krulo wrote: I am a happy man! finally I made it to install mandrake 7.2 and running net with him! :)) I just wanted to ask 1 more thing. I keep having problems with startx with every linux I installed. what console tool can I use to configure my startx (other than xf86config) when I for example put a too high resolution and then the monitor doesnt work in startx? what tool can I run to configure it? Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.2 install problem - two HD's on UDMA66.
I am having the same problems as Rune but I don't have the same hardware, my first two installations were perfect but now I have tryed 5-6 new installation that all end up in the same way; when rc.sysinit is gonna shoot it get's Permission Denied on all it's initiations and then CHOKE. I did send a mail on that on the list and haven't got one reply yet! ei On Monday 20 November 2000 15:23, civileme wrote: Rune Kallhovd wrote: Hi folks! I have run into some serious problems installing Mandrake 7.2 on my box, having the following specs: - Abit BE6-II motherboard (not version 2), latest BIOS (UH) - Celeron 466 - 256 MB RAM - Two HD's on UDMA66 (HPT366), both IBM. /dev/hde - IBM 30GB, 7200rpm, ATA66/100 (boot) /dev/hdf - IBM 13.5GB, 7200rpm, ATA66 - DVD/CD and CD-RW /dev/hda - Pioneer 10/40 DVD/CD /dev/hdb - HP 9100i - Matrox G400 MAX DualHead - Creative 1024 Live! Installation goes quite well, but reboot after installation just chokes when init is starting. I heard someone mention that there is a bug in 7.2 that requires you to disable the primary slave drive in BIOS when installing 7.2. Then download and install a patch of some sort before enabling the slave drive again. Is this so, and could someone point me to where I might find the solution to this? I tried to search for this in the archives here, but could not find anything. Mandrake 7.1 installs just fine on the same box, but I ran into similar problems when I opted for 'disk optimization' during the installation. Boot got stuck when 'preparing disk optimization for /dev/hdf'. This leads me to suspect there is some problems with having a slave drive when installing 7.2? BTW, None of the drives are 'contaminated' with Windoze. If this is downloadable 7.2, try installing in "expert" mode and turning off optimizations. This particular MB/Chipset/Controller combo often chokes on some of them. Check the expert archives or Cooker archives for case histories if interested. If this is not downloadable 7.2, either download it or register your set and contact tech support by email; or get a cheap set of CDs from Cheapbytes or GatorOnline. [newbie] rc.sysinit problems
Hello all Mandrake users! I am new to the Mandrake system but an experienced Linux user, I made two successful installations of Mandrake 7.2 and it worked perfectly. But now when I try to make a new installation the installation itself seems to work perfectly but on reboot everything just stops ans the system hangs when trying to initiate with the /etc/re.sysinit file all it's calls get the reply 'Permission Denied' and then everything stops. I have tryed 4-5 different installations with the same results, a friend of mine has had the same problem, he gave up Mandrake. I really liked the 7.2 Mandrake and would love to have it back. Can someone please help me with this? Cheer's, ei -- @~~ EagleIce ~ [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~~@ @~~ Running GNU/Linux KDE ~~@
Re: [newbie] remove partitions
Roger is right, you should be able to delete the ext2 partitions with Partition Magic (at least if PM can read them) and expand the Win partition afterwards (or make an extra Win partition or whatever!). If this is absolutely impossible then I would try Windows fdisk. You can fix the MBR with fdisk too; fdisk/mbr or fdisk\mbr. ei On Sun, 19 Nov 2000, Roger Sherman wrote: On 19 Nov 2000, ed wrote: Hi heres my Question how do I remove the linux partitions on my HD without having to format the whole HD. I used partition magic to make the partitions on my HD and then I used diskdrake to shrink them to have /hda5,/homehda7,swaphda6,/usrhda8 and hdawindows for a dual-bootbox.I've done this before with partition magic and just deleted the partition and reinstalled but I cant delete it this time I think it's cause I used diskdrake to shrink them. Any advice will be helpful I'am running mdk 7.2 thanks I think you could do this - boot into Windows, run Partition Magic, using PM delete the linux partition, then expand the Windows partition. You will prolly have to use an old MBR to reboot into Windows. Not 100% on that, but I think it'll work -- peace, Rog http://www.slammingrooves.com Registered Linux user #190719 -- @~~ EagleIce ~ [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~~@ @~~ Running GNU/Linux KDE ~~@
Re: [newbie] MandrakeUpdate
OK! Now at least I know that isn't installed.:-( But I've also been looking for it on the cd's, Mandrake sites and FreshMeat, if it isn't a part of the DrakConf package (I've never actually got an answer on that, been asking a few times on mail list's and on IRC) what then is the name of the MandrakeUpdate rpm package and where can I find it? [newbie] Expert newbies imwheel
Hi! I tryed to ask this on the 'Expert' mailing list without any reply at all. I was impressed that the Mandrake 7.2 had configured my MS Intellimouse out of the box, the second Linux dist that manages to do that (Caldera 2.4 beeing the other one). But; when I log in after reboot imwheel is working fine with all KDE apps and StarOffice but it's not working in Netscape! After running the imwheel command though it works again, why this? Observe though that most of us on the lists are enthusiastic Linux users, hackers, some/many testing several different distributions, and/or computer professionals in one way or another. And note that; there are very many happy Linux users out there who are 'not' participating in these lists because everything is probably running to their great satisfaction...;-) Cheers, ei On Saturday 11 November 2000 09:24, you wrote: - I regret to say that receiving the newbie list has been the most - upsetting experiance. - it suggests that no one ever gets linux to work! - I joined with out the ability to print from star office or word perfect - niether word processor is a patch on lotus smart suite, and apart from - their inherant problems they seem to run ever so slowly on wine? - - I shall go on playing with linux and working with os2 and have ordered - the update to warp5. - - regards peter bunce -- EagleIce * [EMAIL PROTECTED] * Running Linux KDE *
[newbie] MandrakeUpdate
Hi! I've installed Mandrake 7.2, the DrakeConf program wasn't installed in the beginning but now that's up too, but I can't find the program MandrakeUpdate! Isn't it supposed to be included in DrakeConf, there is this Live Update alternative but that's only pointing to the cd-rom. Can someone give me a hint on this.
