Re: [newbie] 9.2.1 ?

2004-03-13 Thread jimmy

Can any one please tell me where to find the 9.2
special update CDs? I tried using bit turrent and I
 never got a decent .img.

I would rather download Mandrake 10. and bittorrent
didn't work for me either. it didn't download single
KB in 10 minutes. it just keeps establishing peer
connections with mirrors and shows the total transfer
rate of about 500 to 600 kbps but download rate is 0
to 1 kbps. I used ftp and I finished it in 1 and half
hour. all three cds. (I used bittorrent for windows)

Re: [newbie] bit torrent

2004-03-13 Thread jimmy
bit torrent is a protocol like ftp to transfer file.
it used peer to peer connection. So you have to first
download and install bit torrent program which will
download CD images automatically using the mirror
information in the bittorrent file that you got. Read
this page to know where to get bit-torrent manager,
depending on your OS:

Re: [newbie] can Mandrake 9.2 write on ntfs file system?

2004-03-05 Thread jimmy
I moved my data to a temporary folder and reformatted
that partition in FAT32 using windows, because
Mandrake won't let me write in NTFS even if its
mounted in 'rw' mode. And then I changed global mount
option for the type of that partition from ntfs to
vfat in /ectc/fstab

and now I can access it from windows as well as from
Linux :)

Thank you all.

[newbie] need help installing driver for wireless card, Dlink DWL 520 chipset: rtl8180

2004-03-04 Thread jimmy
Hello, everyone

I am new to this list and also a newbie for linux. I
want to get my wireless card working in linux. It is
Dlink DWL 520 with reaktek rtl8180 chipset. Somewhat
expert users please help me :)

I am writing what I have done till now:

I found the driver from realtek site

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloads1-3.aspx?Keyword=rtl8180

It contains precompiled driver rtl8180_24x.o for
redhat 9, kernel 2.4.20 and also source code and
script files to bring the interface up and down.

I have Mandrake 9.2 so thought I have to compile it
myself. I downloaded kernel source rpm, installed it.
Then did make, to compile the driver I don't know if
it worked but it showed 2 or 3 warnings and generated
the output rtl8180.o
then I did makeinstall
now when I run the script './wlanup infra'
it shows following,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] rtl8180_1.5]# ./wlanup infra
insmod: a module named rtl8180_24x already exists
infra
./wlanup: line 23: /sbin/iwpriv: No such file or
directory
./wlanup: line 24: /sbin/iwpriv: No such file or
directory
./wlanup: line 52: /sbin/iwpriv: No such file or

./wlanup: line 53: /sbin/iwpriv: No such file or
directory
./wlanup: line 64: /sbin/iwpriv: No such file or
directory
./wlanup: line 72: /sbin/iwpriv: No such file or
directory

I am writing commands on these lines in wlanup script
for reference
23 /sbin/iwpriv wlan0 wlan_para networktype=infra
24 /sbin/iwpriv wlan0 wlan_para ssid2scan=iit
52 /sbin/iwpriv wlan0 wlan_para encmode=off
53 /sbin/iwpriv wlan0 wlan_para wepmode=off
64 /sbin/iwpriv wlan0 msglevel 0
72 /sbin/iwpriv wlan0 enable

Thank you.

[newbie] can Mandrake 9.2 write on ntfs file system?

I just installed Mandrake 9.2 but cannot write on my

to remount it in read-write mode and I did it. But I
still cannot write on that partition, though it shows
that it is 'rw' when I do mount -l

Re: [newbie] can Mandrake 9.2 write on ntfs file system?

2004-03-04 Thread jimmy
Thank you Anton.
But the partition on which I want to write from linux
doesn't have any OS on it, just it is formatted in
NTFS. It is actually my data drive. And as it doesn't
have any OS on it mandrake mounts it in 'rw' mode
automatically everytime unlike XP and 2000 partitions
which are mounted in read only mode.
But I don't know why can't I still write on that
partition. Do I have to convert it to FAT32?

Thank you again.
:)

google is your friend. It can be done but is really
 not recommended. M$

will have to piss around if you want it. Best not to
 write to a
partition that has an OS on it anyway (from another
OS) - set up a share
with FAT32 that is no probs for linux and Windoze.

[newbie] Drake 9 don't do video

2002-10-26 Thread Jimmy Montague
Hi, Everybody:

I downloaded the isos and burned them onto 3 CDs.
I booted from CD1 and ran the install per directions.
It's slick until comes time to configure the video/Xwindows environment.
There I hit a stump. I've installed 4 times, now, and still can't get it
right.

System is:

FIC VA503+ mobo
AMD K6-2/350 processor
256 mb Crucial RAM
2 Maxtor 13 gb hdds
1 generic 50x CD-ROM
1 fdd
Creative Ensoniqe sound
ATI 3D Rage Pro vid card with 8 mb RAM
Compaq V50 monitor
IBM model M keyboard (101 key, US English)
Logitech MouseMan PS2

Problem is that during the install, Xconfigurator sees the vid card as
an ATI Mach 64 with a Utah chipset. Default config is 16 million 24-bit
color, 800x600 res.

If I accept that and run a test, the screen goes black for about 30
seconds and then comes back on. If I then tell it to load X at boot-up,
what happens is that the system reboots and looks good until it loads X.
Then the screen goes black and stays that way forever.

So I reinstall. Tell Xconfigurator that the vid card is really an ATI
Rage Pro 3D. Then, no matter what config I set up (65k colors 16-bit,
for example) the system returns an error when I test it.

The error is: You must specify a keyboard in XF86Config try to change
some parameters. (sic)

So I boot to the command line as root. Issue a command xf86config. Run
through all of THAT. At the end, it tells me it's going to save the
configuration, and then it saves. When I tell it startx, I get
execve failed for /etc/x11/x (errno 2)
giving up
xinit: No such file or directory

After install no. 4, I'm whipped.

Ideas, anyone?

Thanks.

Nick

Hello all,
I was thinking of purchasing an MP3 player. But since I'd prefer to have to
boot to Windows as little as possible, I'd need one with Linux support. I
understand that kernel 2.4 now has support for USB devices?

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

   Chris,

After installing pronto I get "Can't locate MIME/Types.pm in
@INC" when trying to run it. And it lists various directories,
none of which have Types.pm. There a several Types.pm on my
machine, however none are in the directory MIME.

Have you sub'd to the pronto mailing list? I used to use it

[newbie] having troubles using lnx4win installing off a hard drive, please help!

2000-04-09 Thread Jimmy

I downloaded the iso and extracted it will full pathname using winimage.
Now I have it all extracted out to my d drive (I extracted it at root level
so it would be like the cd distribution. Then I ran the install batch file
in the lnx4win folder and it installed to my C drive, and brought up the
dialog. I choose my options and told it I was ready to boot. Well, it went
into linux then I get a kernel panic... cannot mount the root device. I
told it I wanted the Hard Drive installation btw. Maybe I am not putting
the files in the right place or something. What do I do?! Thanks!

Re: [newbie] giving up

1999-06-06 Thread Jimmy Garcia

I reinstalled Linux-Mandrake and did everything you said below. My
computer hasn't hung since! It solved my shutdown/logout problem. I was
also able to configure my cable modem internet access and I can now go
online. (I would be writing this from Linux right now, but I forgot the
email address! :)

But, all is not well. My computer is still VERY slow in Linux. The new
initscripts didn't really help out in that area. Linux still keeps
accessing my hard drive, and it takes forever to load anything.

If it'll be of any help, here are my specs:

2 IBM 7,200rpm 10.1G ide hard drives.

Primary partition is Fat32 (win98) w/ 3.5G
Linux Ext2 is 5.7G (logical)
Linux Swap is 360 (logical)
and there's a Linux Ext2 partition that the install made that's 23.5MB
(logical)

128MB pc100 ram, 300a@450, Creative Labs TNT, SBlive value, tekram dc390f
scsi card, 3com ethernet card, ultraplex and plexwriter 8x.

Is my swap file partition too big? Or do I have to install something else?

Thanks everyone! I'm glad that I didn't give up. I really would love to say
goodbye to windoze!

Jimmy

Ok, so I'm assuming you haven't set up net access in Linux either.
Download the updated initscripts package, and put it to C:\.
 Now boot Linux.
Assuming your DOS/Windoze C:\ partition is /dev/hda1 (=first partition of
 the primary master IDE drive),

 mkdir /mnt/tmp
 mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/tmp
 rpm -U --force /mnt/tmp/initscripts*

Yes, there is a GUI way to do this too, but I know this way better. ;)

[newbie] not giving up!

1999-06-05 Thread Jimmy Garcia

Thanks for the replies everyone! I'm going to
try a fresh install and installing those updated 'initscripts' Bernhard
Rosenkraenzer told me about. I'll let you guys know how it goes. By
the way, I've got 128MB of ram.

I'm hoping that I can post my next message using
Linux already!

Jimmy

Re: [newbie] Do cable modems work fine with Mandrake 5.3?

1999-06-03 Thread Jimmy Garcia

I've got the same problem, and now that I've gotten the info from winipcfg,
How do I get Linux to work with my cable modem? I've got a 3com Ethernet
card (set as eth01) and a Motorola Cyber surfer cable modem.

My connection isn't automatically detected. I've tried typing in NETCFG
before, but after my computer (while logging out of Linux) stalled, 'netcfg'
wouldn't work anymore when I tried it again. I'm using Mandrake 6.0 and
KDE.

thanks,
Jimmy

Yes, Mandrake will work fine with your cable modem account.

However, it might be best to tell them that you are a Windows user.
Avoid
confusing the issue by mentioning Linux.

After your account is setup in Windows, you can run winipcfg (or ipconfig
for WinNT) and read the parameters you need to setup Linux.
