Re: [newbie] Question - school related so ignore if you want.

2002-01-03 Thread nathan wainwright

I need to do a project for my statistics class and thought this place would
be perfect for it. I need 50 people to answer this and it would be greatly
appreciated.

1. How many hours a week do you spend online?
35

2. What is your age?
21

3. Sex? M/F
M

4. What type of Internet connection do you have?
cable
5. How many computers do you own?
2 on the internet, about 12 in total

This is for a Elementary Statistics course for a project I am doing. It's a
wintersession course and I need to collect this information ASAP. I need a
total of 50 people to respond.

Thanks again if you decide to answer these questions.

[newbie] Help with NFS on MDK7.2

2001-11-02 Thread nathan wainwright

Okay has anyone ever setup nfs using mandrake7.2

i am trying to get my larger system to run as a nfs server.

... and for some odd reason alot of the stuff in the nfshowto isnt working
(findind nfsd, nfs, mountd... etc)

so i need to know howto find, or install the following
1. mountd (and get it running so that rpcinfo -p shows it)
2. nfs (and get it running so that rpcinfo -p shows it)

i know i have portmap (shows up with rpcinfo -p), and when i start up it
does mention somethings about nfs, and i do have a program called nfslock in
/etc/rc.d/init.d/ but to no avail, this nfs thing isnt working for me

** below is what happens when i try to do /etc/rc.d/init.d/nfslock start**
Starting NFS file locking services:
Starting NFS lockd: lockdsvc: Function not implemented
   [FAILED]
Starting NFS statd:[ OK ]

thanks all

No Contest there! I agree! But I don't think the US Government
thinks

  for

one
second that a terrorist gang pulled this one off by themselves. It
was

  too

co-ordinated, too organized. There was some serious money, and
intel
behind this. Don't be surprised to find out that some radical

  government

 was behind
it. Either that, or I better cut WAY back on those Tom Clancy
novels!

By the way, I'm not comparing this to college football. Your
 Government WILL
make the right decision, Matt. But, unless they come down hard on
these jerks, it could happen again (God Forbid!). I happen to like
 Americans, and I
wouldn't wish this on them or any other country either. But the
best

  way

to prevent repetition is to Drop The Hammer the first time.

  Obviously I

mean dropping it only on those actually responsible. The US people

  have

 never been
happy about Collateral Damage - of that I'm sure, and this time
will

  be

no
different.

But if I remember my history right (correct me if I'm wrong), one
of

  the

Japanese admirals commanding the attack on Pearl Harbor said it
better
than most. Something like - I believe we have awakened a sleeping

  monster

. They had just finished their attack, and he was already thinking

  about

changing his diapers! I think these terrorists should be feeling
the

  same

way right about now. I don't think they thought this attack
through

  well

enough to ponder the response that will surely follow.

Yes, i hear you about being scared...I'm from boston and was evacuated
  today
from work. I just hope that fear does not drive us to succomb to the

Send

RE: [newbie] Linksys router.

2001-09-10 Thread nathan wainwright

the main problem i have is that i am using a installer
disk, (slackware bare.i boot disk, color.z root disk, network addon disk for
drivers)

its doesnt have dhcp (for some reason... they FORGOT to add the crap for
doing dhcp on the installer disks... )and if i dont have dhcp how do i do
nfs? some days i want to strangle some programmers (even tho iam one)

so to put it short... how would i setup the slackware installer to manually
give it a ip address? (remember this installer has pretty much net stacking

hmm... all I can tell you is first make sure that the machine is setup for
DHCP. If it is, then remove the router from between the machine and the
internet and see if you can get an ip address that way.

If all else fails give the machine an ip address and tell it were the
router
is that hopefully should work... I've had really screwy problems with
individual machines. For example, I had originally install a netgear card
and for some bizarre reason would not get an ip address from my linksys
router, I pulled my linksys card out of my other machine and tried it in
the
linux machine and it worked great. So I borrowed a 3com card and tried
that
and it worked great too... I don't get why the netgear card was giving me
such a hard time.

yes my main machine connects no prob,

both mandrake linux, and windows have no problem connecting to the net

okay the slackware that i am using is JUST A INSTALLER... nothing full
just three disks loaded into ram... the problem i have is trying to get a ip
address assigned to that machine.

and seeing as it didnt work on my main machine... i think it would be the
router, the nic card in both my machines work fine.

ill try a static config... hope it works, but im not thinking it will

okay, for the next part in this saga with my getting a webserver online...

1. how could i setup a ip address on the 486, using

2. or... what is the slackware equal to dhcpcd cmd in mandrake to have the

3. is there another disk i could use... that would have dhcp client utils on

/etc/init.d/nfslock start

portmap started fine... nfs locks the machine and gets some stupid error?
should i put this into rc.local instead?

hi, have you installed the nfs rpm packages?
something like nfs-utils or somesuch,

then you can use the command exportfs to serve an nfs volume:
#exportfs /path/to/export machine:domain
or something similar
this is all from memory as i haven't done this for ages so caveats apply, i
know you can set up nfs serves from linuxconf

is that mandrake's renaming of it...

or did they put the nfs command somewhere else... also where do i find
'portmap' and 'mountd' or is mountd... just mount?

I am actually curious as to how someone without internet access is supposed
to get this unlock code. has microsoft addressed this or are they only
going
to make their product availible to those who live in areas that have
internet
access? I know that there are huge areas in the southwest that still don't
have internet access.

[newbie]

2001-09-08 Thread nathan wainwright

okay i added the line /mnt/cdrom *.localdomain(ro,insecure) to my exports
file in /etc i dont have a local host name setup, left as default in
mandrake... but i want my slackware machine to be able todo a nfs to the
mandrake machines cdrom... could i just take out *.localdomain... and put in
* and the mandrake machine would allow the slack machine to connect?

because whenever i type in

mount -t nfs 192.168.1.100:/mnt/cdrom /cdrom
it spits out
mount: RPC: Unable to receive; errno = Connection refused

what does that mean? i have nfs, portmap running... i added the export line
to /etc/exports

all i want is for my 486 to be able to install slack on it.. by either nfs
(which isnt working either), or just a mounted directory (the above method
that im trying.
