RE: Re: [newbie] aureal soundcard

Use the drivers from the project on sourceforge. The ones Aureal
put out were utter crap, those are much better and your chances
of getting the sourceforge ones to work is much better than the
1.1.1 Aureal ones.

My computer has an aureal sound card. Mandrake 7.2 detects it
but it needs
a mod for the kernal so that it can actually work properly.
the internet
address for the site given by 7.2 was http://linux.aureal.com
 unfortunately
they have gone broke and shut everything down. Anyone know where
i could
still obtain this kernal addon so that i can get sound without
haven to by a

/usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config : endmode : command not found

setuptool
bash: setuptool : command not found

but my XF86Setup works! but when I try any of the combinations
for the modes
I always get a "no valid mode found" running "startx". isn't
there any
autoprobe or something like that to detect my card and valid
modes 4 it?

Hi,

I installed PMFirewall recently and have been getting a ton of
the same
message in my syslog and messages files - they are "deny" messages,
but of my
own static IP address, so I must have something set up wrong.

As a consequence, these files have been getting huge, and have
caused me some
problems when the partition has run out of space. I notice that
there is a
..gz file of each of these files. Is there a system parameter
that based on
the filesize automatically compresses the file ? If so, how do
I manipulate
that so that my system behaves while I track down the firewall
problem ?

Thanks,

RE: [newbie] Paul (...) Sound Card Configutation

That card is running in PNP mode. The only thing I can tell
you to do is the following to see if it works.

Type this at the console:

pnpdump

Your soundcard should show up on there: Then do this:

pnpdump /etc/isapnp.conf

then,

isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf

REBOOT and see if it works.

Have you disabled PNP is your BIOS? Is there a way you could
disable PNP on the soundcard?

In linuxconf you setup your ip and your DNS,etc... also you checked
DHCP and you get an error, what's happening is that dhcp-client
is not istalled. Try this as root on the console:

modprobe dhcp-client (i think that's right)

All you need is the module for the dhcp-client to be loaded and
you should be in business, I don't use dhcp so I'm not too familiar

BTW, when they told you that you can use it within 2 days is
true because you can use it but most DNS servers won't pick you

depends on how the DNS server is setup and some just don't update

RE: [newbie] sendmail question

2000-10-30 Thread veloct

I am not expert on sendmail but I believe sendmail is only for
sending mail out that's why you only see a reference to SMTP.
Fetchmail retrieves mail. I hope that helps.

Does sendmail support POP3. I have sendmail installed on my
box at home, supporting a small local network and am trying to
use windows 9X and 2000 to retrieve my mail threw outlook express.
I also have a unit outside the network that I wish to get my
email from at work. I wish to configure it to use the POP3 protical.
I am having no luck at all finding any reference to POP at all
(only SMTP). Any help would be great.

RE: Re: [newbie] Password

That's probably because Larry and some others are using LILO
to login into linux. In Grub you have that failsafe option.
 I hope this make sense.

the install
set up root without a password. Not a good idea in any case

then explain to me why when i lost my password and couldnt get
in i managed
to log in under failsafe and used linuxconf to change my password!
if i never knew it and still got into single user obviously someone
has to be
mistaken or there are a crap load of bugs in mandrake7.1!

RE: Re: [newbie] Java Install for Star Office 5.2

2000-10-28 Thread veloct

Remember, it all depends on what version of glibc or libc you
are running. It has to match. I happen to be using glibc 2.1.3
so I used that one.

I recently asked if anyone knew how to set up Java for Star

 5.2.
Since I got no reply, I assumed no one knew. I have it up
and
running now and it actually turns out to be fairly straight
forward.

 1. Download JDK118_v3-glibc-2.1.2.tar.bz from the Blackdown
site.
http://www.blackdown.orgIt is the only version that
SO 5.2
 will
recognize. You can extract it with tar -xvvIf JDK118***.bz
That is a capital "I" and not L or 1.

 2. When you open SO 5.2, it looks for it automatically. Open
 "Bookmarks"
and go to "Java Setup". You will find that it has already
 located it. If
you click 'OK", it updates the "JAVA HOME=" line in the
sofficerc
 and
the change takes effect the next time you of SO 5.2.

I went to the site but only found a JDK118_V3-glibc-2.1.3.tar.bz
? Was
the above a typo or did I miss something? Thanks, Dennis

RE: Re: [newbie] 7.2

Well, according to Deno from Mandrakeforum.com. There is no
way that it's out to retail yet since it wasn't release until
early this morning.

7.2 final just began showing up on Mandrake ftp mirrors
late
yesterday (10/27). The cheap CD sites will prob'ly have it

available in a day or two. The retail box sets will more likely
be
 two weeks.

Can someone from Mandrake tell us whether the release version
is any
different from the Oct12th beta version?

Cheers -- Larry

[newbie] re:7.2 stuff

2000-10-28 Thread veloct

The 7.2 that you download will have the final kde2 files. The
7.2 that will be sold via retail will have kde1.99 and they will
patch it via MandrakeUpdate. This is from one of the VP's of
MandrakeSoft.

The posts that come from [EMAIL PROTECTED] or similar are
from a program that they have running at mandrakeforums that
notifies someone when somebody else has replied to a post on
the forum, that's all.

I myself placed my order with Cheapbytes for the 2 cd's since
I only have 144k IDSL. I am figuring that these 2 cd's will
contain the kde2 final since they will probably get the files
off one of the ftp's.

Maybe Larry or Tom could explain what the best way to setup 7.2
would be, either update what you have or clean install?

creaktop,

If you look a little further below the 7.2beta and the 7.1
and 7.0 entries they have one for 7.2 final pre ordering. I
think is $3.99 for 2 CD's.

If final, then how because there isn't a link there for ordering
it...
or can you pre-order and how ???
