RE: [newbie] 7.0-2 version

2000-04-14 Thread Greg Martz

Thank you so much for the answer! It's nice to know that there are actually
some people here that want to help us newbies rather than chastise them.
Checking with uname -a and looking at the kernel on rpmfind.net proved that
they are the same, so I have the current version. Again thank you for the
help!

Try

% uname -a

If this doesn't work, then check the versions of the kernel images and other
boot files in the /boot directory.

If neither of these work, then I'm not sure how else to check this. There
may
be a configuration file somewhere, which might contain this information;
however, if neither of the above methods provides the information you want,
then they should and you might want to report this in the Mandrake bug
reports.

Re: [newbie] 7.0-2 version

2000-04-13 Thread Alan Shoemaker

Gregonce installed, the 7.0-2 iso image will also give you a
7.0 (Air) version. Once installed on a computer the 7.0 iso
image and the 7.0-2 iso image are the same. The few bugs fixed
in the 7.0-2 iso image have only to do with the installation
process itself and these bugs are avoidable by downloading a
floppy.img file and booting for the install with it rather than
with the cd containing the 7.0 iso image. All of what I've just
told you is freely available on the Mandrake's web site. You
shouldn't jump to conclusions without doing some research into
the subject.

[newbie] 7.0 killed my FAT drive!

2000-04-06 Thread David Hugh-Jones

I installed 7.0 without seeing this:
http://www.pcplus.co.uk/discs/163a.asp
or this:
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fupdates.php3

Result: my FAT filesystem is a mess. Everything directly under my C:
drive is OK, but everything in subdirectories is scrambled (files,
directories, the lot)

Names are changed from e.g. 'britney.mpg' to '74£hjk;d;¬! @' (yes, I
know, that's an improvement). Windows won't boot (because everything in
C:\windows has been changed).

Does anyone know how I can recover from this via linux or msdos? I have
a windows boot disk but that is all. I would like to get my installation
back, but failing that, can I at least recover the files?

any help gratefully received
cheers
Dave

[newbie] 7.0 Upgrade

2000-04-06 Thread Daniel Knapp

Help,

I just upgraded Mandrake from 6.1 to 7.0 and the following programs no
longer work:
Acrobat reader
Corel WordPerfect
MapleV
They all give me the following error message:
can't load library 'libXt.so.6'

I haven't had this problem with Netscape, Mathematica, etc.

I looked for the file on my hard drive, and it seems to be in the right
places:
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.so.6
/usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib/libXt.so.6
/usr/i586-glibc20-linux/lib/libXt.so.6

Does anyone know what I need to do to fix this.

Thank you,

I purchased a disk from a yet to be disclosed mail order company and
requested specifically that they NOT ship me the 7.0 release and they
confirmed that they would put me on the list for the 7.0-2 list when it
became available to them. Is there any way to tell what version I got
(the label only indicates 7.0 however I have seen them leave off a
"point" release before)? My kernel version is 2.2.14-15mdk (I think)

[newbie] 7.0: Text Install

2000-02-25 Thread Lane Lester

Thanks to Merle Pittman, who told me I could do a text install. This was
necessary since the graphic version's "fdisk" will not work with just
keyboard input. The install does not recognize my serial mouse, because
I have a PS/2 port, and the install thinks I should be using it. g

To run the text install, it was necessary to type "linux text" at the
boot: prompt. Everything went very smoothly, and I elected to format
over my 6.1 installation.

Someone lamented the fact that there's no Install Everything option
now. I selected Expert-Development, and I was present with a short list
of package types in which everything was selected. I unselected "Web
Server" and "Network Management Workstation" only.

I'm glad to be running 7, whether it's 7.0 or 7.0-2 (but I'm going to
check!)

I discovered that the install-created fstab was messed up somewhat, but
I also found in the floppy boot's lilo.conf the following statement:
append=" hdc=ide-scsi ". My CD drive is an IDE, so I'm not sure about
that statement. Anyway, I left it out of the lilo.conf I'm using, and
now the CD is available.

[newbie] 7.0 vs 7.2

what it is?

Re: [newbie] 7.0 vs 7.2

There are a number of fixes between 7.0 and 7.02 that are listed at:

http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fupdates.php3

Some people reported problems using/installing 7.0 but those problems
disappeared in 7.02. I've had problems trying to get 7.0 to recognize my
NIC and soundcard, and I ordered 7.02 so I HOPE it will clear those up.

I have used it several times. Remember to defrag the windows drive
before attempting this. Also backup any data you wish to have. If not
properly defragged it is possible to destroy the Win partition's data.
On my latest I have windows running in a 1.5 gig partition, more for
importing files from a CrossPad than anything else, so I don't need much
space.

the answer is "yes it should" however playing with partition size has always
had the potential for disaster and this is probably as true of Mandrake as
of human operator.Best to run defrag beforehand to give the best chance and
should then be OK.

[newbie] 7.0 and i810

I noticed that 7.0 has xfree86 3.3.6, which has support for Intel i810.
The xfree86 site claims that i810 support is disabled by default because
it requires a special kernel module.

Is that module supplied in the 2.2.14 kernel in 7.0 and is i810 support
enabled out of the box or not? Does anyone know. Given the huge number
of new i810 machines coming on the market these days this might be
important. After all, I'm asking.

Re: [newbie] 7.0 Setup

2000-01-19 Thread Derrick Judge

Go to rpmfind.net for the rpm for ssh rpm or www.ssh.fi for the ssh homepage
and download the source code tarball. As for the cablemodem did you name
machine what the cable company told you to?

Subject: [newbie] 7.0 Setup

I am kind of new to Linux and just installed 7.0. I have gotten my cable
modem to work but now every time I boot it states that http: fails and I
need to run servername manually. What do I need to do to correct this?

Also how do I setup up my zip drive (parallel) to work with Linux.

Also need ssh to login remotely to work, where can I obtain this?

 Thanks,
 Karl
