So, say in a day or so, you'll be our expert on btmgr heh;)
Iirc there's a way of just writing/coppying btmgr to mbr i.e. that's
actually all the rpm and the .exe do.

[newbie] Additional Drivers Floppy? (MDK floppy cdrom.img install)

2004-09-19 Thread JoeHill

Hey all,

Tryin' to do an install of MDK 10.0 Official on an old box I got my mitts on,
and it won't boot from the CD.

I created a boot floppy with the cdrom.img, but when I try to start the install
I get 'No CDROM device found', and when I hit 'Ok', it tells me to insert the
'Additional Drivers floppy'.

I can see nothing in the INSTALL or README about this, except for network
drivers to do a net install, and no images that fit this description in the
/Images dir on the CD.

Help?

You probably need a driver for the CD ROM in order to read the CD.

Well, it's pretty old, but it's from another box which I had installed MDK on
before, though that was 9.2 (IIRC). This machine, however, does not allow for
booting from the CD :-(. One thing I should have mentioned, if I boot from a
Win98 floppy (one of the few useful things to come out of MS), it detects the
CDROM and I can read from the drive. Unfortunately, this does me no good as the
MDK CD doesn't appear to have any 'setup' or 'install' scripts I can run to get
things going.

Any idea what this 'Additional Drivers floppy' is, and/or where I can get it?

Joe,

Did you ever try a floppy with smartbootmanager?
It comes on the slackware install CD's and works on the most improbable of

I've had some good experiences with it.

Too true:)

The additional drivers floppy is a FD that contains drivers for hardware
that is not on the dist it was pretty common in RH-7 days likely you
shouldn't need it. But you do need a CD-ROM driver that will wake up
your CD. If you have an old copy of RH or Caldera(from the same era)
around there should be a driver on that dist that will build a FD that
may install your MDK dist. No guarantees.

Thanks Hoyt, but already resolved...sort of :-\ Ended up (see below) that I
needed to use a different floppy image from the default.

Turns out, the install froze at the very end, didn't reboot, and now the CDROM
won't stay closed and the system won't boot. I'm thinkin' the CDROM got fried by
some 'eject' command at the end of the install, but I'm just guessing on that
one.

I'm taking this as a hint that MDK 10 is probably not good to load on this
old-timer. I've wanted to do some experimenting, and I'm thinkin' a more
'stock' kernel is better for an old cranky machine like this, so I'm gonna try a
Debian network install from floppies, just for fun.

Wish me luck :-)
