[newbie] Dial-up connection problem
Hello everyone! =) I need your help. I don't know how to connect to the Internet using my dial-up connection. I am using Speed Com+ 56K external modem (serial) running on Mandrake 8.1. I hope you can give me a HOW-TO on how to connect my dial-up to the Internet. Please forgive me if this is a very newbie question. It's just that I don't know how and I really want to surf the web using my Mandrake 8.1 already. Thanks in advance... You will have to know your ISPs two DNS addresses, like 207.217.126.81 or similar. You should make the device on the device tab /dev/ttyS0 and you will need your dial in number and password. I don't know how it's handled in console mode but this is a start if you use KDE desktop. Most of it is self explanatory. Come back if you need more help. RE: [newbie] Dial-up connection problem
install wvdial off your mandrake cd's then go to /etc in an xterm (as root) and type 'touch wvdial.conf' then type wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf it will go and find your modem, query it, and put its details in /etc/wvdial.conf... then, edit that file, and fill in the blanks for dialup number, username and password.. then, run the file by typing: wvdial the modem will dialup your ISP, and work out what it needs... it works great.. I create two files called dial and hangup.. by doing this: touch /usr/sbin/dial and touch /usr/sbin/hangup then edit dial and put: wvdial in it, and any other things you want to run on dialup, (like restarting you firewall or whatever.) then do the same for hangup, and this time put: killall wvdial then, whenever you want to dial, you type dial, and ditto with hangup... works great, and it solved a problem I had, where my ISP, uses two different routers to connect to, both of which had different prompting methods and as such normal dialup scripts wouldn't work... give it a go, its easy to do, and works great... (you will have to use sudo if you want to do it as anyone other then root.) rgds Frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Mandrake Newbie Sent: Tuesday, 22 January 2002 5:22 PM To: Linux Mandrake Newbie Subject: [newbie] Dial-up connection problem Hello everyone! =) I need your help. HTH Just to add to Dennis' post, FYI /dev/ttyS0 = COM1 in Windoze and /dev/ttyS1 = COM2 (just in case you have plugged your modem into your second serial port). skinky -- oxymoron: Microsoft Works Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I am using Speed Com+ 56K external modem (serial) running on Mandrake 8.1. I hope you can give me a HOW-TO on how to connect my dial-up to the Internet. You have 2 choices if you use dialup. If you are using Gnome, I recommend wvdial. If you use KDE, go to the K menu, Networking, Remote Access and open the Internet Dialer. Go to the Setup tab on the bottom, then New and Dailog Setup and give your connection a name. Type in the connection phone number, then add--you can add a whole string of #'s, one at a time. Open the IP tab and check the box for Dynamic IP Address. Open the Gateway tab and check Default Gateway, unless your ISP uses a specific address for a gateway, then you will check the Static Gateway and fill in the address. Check the box Assign the Default Route to this Gateway. Open the DNS tab, and type in your ISP's domain name (mine is gorge.net). Click the manual box, and type in your ISP's primary domain address, (should be something like 200.123.132) and click Add. Do it again for your ISP's secondary DNS server address. Click OK. Open the Device tab. It will probably say /dev/modem This is usually o.k., but not always. Open the Modem tab and click the Query Modem button. If the system finds the modem, you will get a Modem Query Results box within a few seconds, and you're all setup. If the system doesn't find your modem, go back to the Device tab and try the dropdown arrow, choosing /dev/ttyS0, /dev/ttyS1, /dev/ttyS2, etc., in succession, going to the Modem tab and querying the modem with each selection. If that all fails to work, get back to the list. e. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
RE: [newbie] Dial-up connection problem
you can use kppp from within gnome as well ,, just open an xterm and type: kppp and off you go, i used to use kppp from within icewm all the time. still think wvdial is better thought, console tools like this are awesome,, and use very little resources, unlike kppp and others. rgds Frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Erylon Sent: Tuesday, 22 January 2002 3:44 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] Dial-up connection problem On Tuesday 22 January 2002 01:22, you wrote: Hello everyone! =) I need your help.
