Re: [newbie] First time linux user in DIRE need of help!
Go to the web site of your monitors manufacturer, there you should find out the specs of your monitor. If you can't find it there, phone up a help number which usually comes with your system. Ask them for the: Horiz. Frequency 30Khz - 50 Khz Vert. Frequency 50 Hz - 90 Hz Horiz. Addressability 1024 Pels (Max) Vert. Addressability 768 Lines (Max) Of your Monitor. The numbers displayed above are my monitor specs. They are only an example. (DO NOT USE THESE SPECS ON YOUR MONITOR) each monitor is different. Once you have them go back to linux and configure them. Im not sure what command to type to find monitor configurations. But im sure the books that came with mandrake should help you.. Good lucky Jerome [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Now, every time I try to boot Linux from the bootdisk it takes 5 minutes to load from the disk and I get a black screen with a scan out of range message! Fortunately I can still access windows98 to write you this message. What should I do?? You should start in runlevel 3 (since runlevel 5 takes you to the graphical login screen). I think you can accomplish that by typing "linux 3" at the LILO prompt. Re: [newbie] First time linux user in DIRE need of help!
I don't think dell has their monitor specs on the site, BUT, i might be able to help you as I have 3 dell monitors successfully configured with Mandrake ;o)) Firs, boot your llinux in Command Prompt, for that, boot from your disk and at the lilo prompt, type linux 3 you will boot in 'text mode' and you will be able to logon. Next, run setup, type setup at the command prompt and in the menu choose 'X configuration'. There, select your video card, and chose the first line in the monitor setup menu (don't remember what it says exactly, something like 'specify your ...' I think, anyway, just leave your cursor where it is and press enter. In the list, choose 'non interlaced SVGA monitor 1024*720 @ 60' and press enter, then, you will be offered the choices for the vertical refresh rate, there you can just press enter again on the first line. That's it, should work, it does for me. Patrick ps Using windows for the moment so I can't check the exact phrasing in the menues, but if you folow these instructions you should be ok. Re: [newbie] First time linux user in DIRE need of help!
You need to find out from Dell what the specs are on your monitor. Your best bet would then be to run xconfigurator and select the "Custom" monitor option. That way you'll be able to set the specs yourself. Re: [newbie] First time linux user in DIRE need of help!
Will, RE-INSTALL!! First load win98 and go to the command prompt only then type fdisk /mbr That will clear the LILO out of your system ( Unless you really dont care about your win98 or have it all backed up I would boot from a floppy.) Then go through the process of re-installing. This will allow you to do everything over.. since you already have figured out some of the problems you have. The swap partition does not have to be that large Will.. 64meg is lots! If you have over 64meg in the machine you will not be using your swap partition much anyway.. thats why it sets a max at 133meg.. you will never need more. As for X and the monitor etc.. it is most likely your Video card selection that is the problem not the monitor. try and find out your chipset type. As for the monitor you can choose to install it as a 72mhz 1024 x 768 monitor to start out with.. your monitor can do that NO PROBLEMS.. once you have X up and running you can modify your configuration while you are running. Hope this helps.. James
