[newbie] lilo problem
Dear all After upgrading a HDD, during which upgrade for a while I had three drives on my machine, shown as hde, hdf, and hdg, of which hde was the one I was booting from at that time. I have installed MK10 (download-final) on what was hdg. Now after removing the extra drive, and moving hdg-hde on the IDE controller, I am unable to boot, because the system is saying hdg is mounted, and trying to check it. Can anyone advise me how to kill the old configuration and get something usable back, please? Lilo is loading and I have made a new initrd image. Can't copy lilo.conf to you, but it has a single option based on the new image, and boot=/dev/hde Thanks for any help Russell Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Hey, (Sorry for late reply, ISP's mailserver didn't want to send my mail) :-( Rich, two suggestions : If you run KDE or GNOME, open Control Center, type in your root-password, and select Boot. Then, select Boot Config. Now, in the upper right corner, click Configure. This opens a dialog-box, called Bootloader Main Options. Here, you can select the boot device. I guess you can choose whatever here. If still in trouble, post two files to the list : 1. : /etc/lilo.conf 2. : /etc/fstab I'm not sure that I understand the second part of your answer. Where exactly do I put those statements? In the boot loader? This meant that you should send a copy of the files named lilo.conf and fstab which can both be found in the /etc directory to this mailing list. Copy their contents to a mail and send it here. You can open them in a text-editor, copy the text and paste it into your mail. That way, I'm sure we can help you out. Likewise, it would be nice to know where your hard-disks are located on the IDE-bus, i.e. first/second and master/slave. For your information, the scheme usually is as follows : hda = master on first IDE-bus (normally the first harddisk, with partitions hda1, hda2, hda3 and so on.) hdb = slave on first IDE-bus (I guess that's your second harddisk, with partitions hdb1, hdb2..) hdc = master on second IDE-bus (normally a CD-drive) hdd = slave on second IDE-bus (sometimes a CD-Writer). If you have the guts to experiment with editing those files, remember to make a boot-floppy first ! And finally : after editing lilo.conf (as root), don't forget to run lilo (just type : lilo). If still in trouble, get back to the list. Kaj Haulrich Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] LILO problem
Hi all, Been persuaded by the release of Kylix (Delphi for Linux) to take a look at Linux, but I'm running into a problem with multi-booting Mandrake 8.0 and Windows. The system is a Dell PIII/600, 512 MB RAM, AMI BIOS, with a single H-P CD-RW hanging off the motherboard controller, and all of the drive space hanging off a Promise ATA/66 card. The first two drives are my Windows 2000 Pro. setup, and I was intending to use the third drive for Linux. I go through the setup, everything installs just fine, and the setup routines tells me that my system will be rebooted. It finds the Promise controller and all the drives, but then all I get is a blank screen except for the two characters 'LI' at the top left of the screen - presumably this is part of the LILO prompt. The system hangs at that point, and I have to boot off my Win 2K Pro CD and overwrite the MBR in order to get Windows back again. Anyone got any ideas what's going wrong? Make no assumptions, I'm a total novice at Linux. Thanks, Brian.

[newbie] lilo problem
Hi, that's my problem: 1- I want to boot with win2000 or LM 7.2 on my 30 GB disc 2- I installed first win2000 on one partition on a FAT32 file system 3- I installed then LM 7.2 on another partition on a Ext2 file system 4- I want lilo for boot manager 5- When I reboot my machine appears a black screen filled with "SSS" in all the screen. 6- I suppoused that lilo would reemplaze the boot manager of win2000. How can I do what I want? thanks, Emilio
Re: [newbie] Lilo Problem
Jasonthe mbr of your primary master is not hda1, it is hda. If you've installed lilo on hdd1 and hda1 like you said then that's why Linux won't boot. Lilo needs to overwrite the dos/windows boot loader on /dev/hda then Linux should boot and windows should be a secondary choice (press tab to see your choices at bootup time). Alan Jason Lindsay wrote: Sorry if this is a resend, but I changed email addys recieving this list. I recently installed Mandrake 7 on my machine, on /dev/hdd1 When I install LILO, and reboot, I get nothing but pages and pages of : 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 etc. until I turn it off. Is anyone else having this problem, and how do I fix it? It does the same thing whether I install on the superblock of /dev/hdd1, or on the MBR on /dev/hda1 Here's the system config: /dev/hda: 4.3MB Windows c: drive /dev/hdb: 4.3MB windows data drive /dev/hdc: cdrom /dev/hdd1: ~2GB Linux native partition /dev/hdd2: 256M Linux Swap AMD K6-2 300Mhz 128MB SDRAM SB AWE64 Modem Blaster 56K modem (non-PnP) SMC-based 10Mb ethernet (not currently being used) Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Re: [newbie] LILO problem need urgent help
Mount your Caldera filesystem and copy the portion of /etc/lilo.conf that pertains to the Caldera kernel, and paste it into RedHat's lilo.conf. Be sure to specify the correct root partition (like you do for RedHat). Then re-run lilo, and you ought to be set. -Matt Stegman [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Tue, 14 Dec 1999, NEW STAR wrote: I have 2 harddrive. one for Linux(caldera, slackware) and another for Dos(win98/NT.). When I boot from the IDE drive which has lilo installed, all i get is repeating 10 10 10... can anyone help me? ** Josh Fornwall [EMAIL PROTECTED] PAGER: [EMAIL PROTECTED] **
