[newbie] SANE and scanners
Hi Guys I'm having a bit of a problem getting my scanner to work under 10CE. There appear to be two scanners detected and the output of sane-find-scanner is : [EMAIL PROTECTED] mark]# sane-find-scanner # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that # you have loaded a SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter. found USB scanner (vendor=0x043d, product=0x002d) at libusb:005:005 found USB scanner (vendor=0x046d, product=0x08f0 [Camera]) at libusb:005:004 # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage. # Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports can't be # detected by this program. [EMAIL PROTECTED] mark]# scanimage -L device `gt68xx:libusb:005:005' is a Lexmark X73 flatbed scanner It looks like the scanner won't work because of the duplicate entry in libusb. Is it okay to edit this file, although I'm concerned that I may stuff things up properly. FWIW this scanner was detected and worked perfectly under version 9.2, so I can only asume this is a simple problem. Thanks as always. Mark A Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Sane Mandrake 10-
What controls wether sane will work in mdk or not? I notice that my scanner is in the sane list but yet when I install it it says its unsupported in Mandrake linux. This seems odd. If sane supports it why would mdk not? Others have had the same problem with cannon scanners Mines a canoscan D646U -- Troy T. Hall Registered Linux User #342150 Mandrake Club Member Abilene, KS. [newbie] SANE and Acer scanner
Thought i was one step closer this time. Noticed the icon in Mandrake Control Center for scanner. Told it that i had an Acer and it found and supposedly installed / configured the Prisa Acer 620u driver. yet when i click on the KDE icon (Xsane_/dev/usb/scanner0) it is still not found. The scanner is labelled as a VeugoScan Brisa 620u. HardDrake sees an Acer Peripherals Inc. Prisa AcerScan scanner and i checked out the backends page at www.mostang.com. I think it is a rebadged Acer. Seems to be the right backend for this USB toy. -- Michael Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] sane and Mustek scanner
When logged in as root everything works fine. I think the solution has something to do with permissions but I've no clue how to fix it. Had the same problem with my USB Epson. Try doing (as root) a chmod a+r and a chmod a+w on the device that the scanner uses. For me, that was /dev/usb/scanner0. That lets all users (the a part of that chmod command) read and write to that device. -- -- Michael J. Re: [newbie] sane and Mustek scanner
I second that emotion! I've got a Mustek 1200 UB and I am having similar problems. I found a driver on the SANE website and folowed the instructions, but couldn't get GIMP to read it. Wish I had an answer for you. If I find anything in my search, I'll definitely post it. Good luck. I'm extremely new to almost all things Linux - I have worked with unix, but not so much with the OS itself. I have a Mustek III EP Plus scanner that I have not been able to get working under LM8 for the life of me. I've read the man pages, downloaded the recommended driver. I did finally get Xsane to open from the command line, but it does not see my scanner. It also appears that I was able to set Xsane up to run as a Gimp Plug-in - I now get the eula for Sane when opening up the Gimp. Could anyone possibly give me a walk through? I've spent hours on this, and seem to be getting nowhere. TIA for any and all help. Stan Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Sane Mandrake (Scanner)
I have had sane 1.0.4 installed and have only been able to scan gray mode. Color only gives a IO problem. Mandrakes cooker now has version 1.0.5 of the sane RPM's as well as version 0.78 of xsane. However, once I have removed the old software and re-installed with the lastest version, scanimage -V still reports 1.0.4. Is there a simple explanation? Also, after doing a scanimage -T, the prompt does not return and the scanner light stays on for about ten minutes at which point the prompt returns. Color test completes but does not return prompt either. Previous version at least finished gray test? Sorry for any bad english, my 18 month old daughter is helping me type this email. Cheers, Dave. Re: [newbie] Sane
Andreas et al., Thanks for helping me out with my earlier automounting problem, BTW. Works fine now. I wonder if you or someone on the list could point me in the right direction on hooking in a scanner on my linux box. Just some basic info on context would be an enormous help. One of the problems with being a linux newbie is that you often can't even figure out what part of the forest a particular tree is in! I have SANE and xscanimage installed (LM 8.0). I have an HP 500 PSC all-in-one (scanner, printer, copier) hooked in on the parallel port. Printing works fine. xscanimage will run but is not communicating with the printer/scanner. Do I need to get a driver from HP? Is SANE only for SCSI hookups? In short what kind of steps do I need to take to grab an image from the scanner? TIA. Terry Smith Woods Hole, MA Andreas J. There is a bug in SANE 1.0.3/1.0.4 that causes this problem if you are using a 2.4 kernel. THere is a very simple fix for that but I haven't gotten around to compiling a repaired RPM. [newbie] SANE
I want to test my SCSI scanner with linux mandrake 7.1 but I'm in doubt on what to do. I see sane is installed via the rpm included into the iso image I used, when reading the manual it talks about "saned" but no saned is into the rpm package nor in the filesystem. Must I compile the SANE pachage after installing it via rpm ? Also the "saned" call is needed, as I understand, to be added to inetd.conf file but, indeed, I have no saned at all. I apologize for my misunderstanding about the question. P.S. the scanner itself is an Acer prisa 620st which, I see, must work whith the sanpscan backend. Thanks. Massimo Corinaldesi

Type in xscanimage and hit enter. Should work. mc wrote: I want to test my SCSI scanner with linux mandrake 7.1 but I'm in doubt on what to do. [newbie] sane
I have just installed mandrake 7.04. I am trying to get 2 things happening. 1. get xscanimage working in gimp. I installed sane through rpm on the cd. AS I undestand it I do not have to compile or anything like that if I do it through the packet manager. .I cando find-scanner and it finds my hp 5p scanner I can run xscanimage from a console as root and it works. I cannot seem to find the aquire image in gimp though. Have I missed out a step. I installed gimp and the gimp lib off the mandrake cd through the packet manager. 2. I cannot get xscanimage to work as a user other than root . I guess this is due to a permission problem but I donot know whatpermissions to change and where. This is the error message I recieve. xscanimage: no devices available. Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkmain.c: line 534 (gtk_main_quit): assertion `main_loops != NULL' failed.
