[newbie] Updated, now another problem....

2004-04-20 Thread JRH

Bit of a funny one this.

KDE appears to have gone monumentally belly up!

All letters in Kmail and in the KDE notification windows, appear to be double
spaced now!!

I have a screenshot available, as it will tell a thousand times more than I
will ever be able to describe in writing!

I have installed ALL available updates to MDK10 Community.

Any Ideas? if you want to see the screenshot, mail me off list.

Ta,

JRH

 Humph.

It seems you are using monospaced fonts. Could be a hangover from a
previous install. Go into Settings -- Configure KMail --
Appearence, edit fonts to something proportional.

As an addendum to my own post : if everything in KDE has gone belly
up, there is one, last resort :

Boot into a CLI or another GUI, i.e. Gnome. From there, delete your
entire /home/user/.kde directory. That way you'll get rid of all
the local configuration files, and next time you start KDE it will
use the default ones. Then, you can start over with new, individual
configurations. Been there, done that.

A note on the 9.2 rpms.
Because I did not adjust for the usage of the nvidia driver on the build
system it is possible that an unsatisfied X depend may be present.
This can be safely circumvented by usage of --allow-nodeps.

Charles

I assume this means that since I have an Nvidia card to add the
--allow-nodeps?

If you are using the nvidia driver you do not need --allow-nodeps.
Those without the card May need to use it, didn't verify all the
requires so I'm not sure.

It just requires a dependency which will not be supplied unless you
also have the nvidia driver installed

It is safe to ignore this dependency and install using --allow -nodeps

I am planing to add 10.0 in addition to, rather than replacing 9.2.

In that regard I now have all the sylpheed-claws-0.9.10 rpms available

drakxtools, rpmdrake, urpmi, grpmi, rpm

Specifically the rpmdrake package should be what you need but there are
inter-dependencies. The Mandrake Control Centre is called by various names
Dennis. drakconf, mcc, drakconf.real (the n-curses version I think)

You may also need to re-install drakxtools-newt.

Try:

rpm --rebuilddb updatedb update-menus -v -n ldconfig [Enter]

Then update your sources with the

urpmi.update -a -c -f [Enter]

and

urpmi --auto-select [Enter]

to see if you can get things back to normal.

   Charles

I hate to disappoint you, Charles, but it happened to me AGAIN. Well...
I found something.
It looks that the new enigmail GUI is incompatible with mozilla-1.4's
(and 1.6's) classic and modern themes. To workaround it, I installed
LittleMozilla theme from mozdev.org. The theme is rahter cheesy, but
it's better than losing 80% of the window.
Another thing is that gtk-theme-switch and gtk-theme-switch in contrib
appears to be buggy. When I try to run switch, the message appears:

GLib-CRITICAL **: file gstrfuncs.c: line 186 (g_strconcat): assertion
`string1 != NULL' failed.

Another weird thing is that seems that it is set to theme 4Missy (???)
by default. And when I try to change theme to Default, another happy
message appears:

Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkentry.c: line 440 (gtk_entry_set_text):
assertion `text != NULL' failed.

When I try to fight with it again (or try switch2), the variants of
these messages appear.
And I am uncertain where exactly this bug report should go. Mandrake?
Gnome? Can somebody give me a hint?

This is classic gtk1.2 and gtk++2 infighting.

Mozilla is now gtk2 and will only support gtk2 themes.
Some of the WM's and the corresponding themes they make use of are
gtk1.2 based.

If you have xfce4 installed can you boot to it and see if you get the
same behaviour.

I got the same behaviour there. It looks like ~/.gtkrc* files are to
blame. When I deleted all of them, I got a lot nicer Modern/Classical
view (only Decrypt icon dead now) and now I am going to cease
experimenting with GTK themes (I set in GNOME to Galaxy theme - it is
GTK 1.2 for Gnome 2).
Now I've got another question - how to import GPG keys to Mozilla 1.6?
It seems like I've lost one during transition (now I have only THAWTE
key and cannot choose anything else). It seems like EnigMail is the most
troubling part of Mozilla-1.6 package for me... :(

[newbie] Updated rpms

2003-11-17 Thread Charles A Edwards

I have updated the 9.2 gaim rpms avaiable from my site to sync them with
the current cooker rpms.
This mdk release includes the gaim-festival plugin and does require that

%description
Dlume is nice, Gtk 2-based address book.
You can easily add, edit, and delete records from an XML database.
A Quick-search makes it easy to find entries.
Exporting to CSV and HTML formats is also possible.

For those who use alternate WMs dlume is a nice address book in that it
is WM independent.

[newbie] Updated site

2003-11-14 Thread Charles A Edwards
I have updated my site for mdk 9.2.

I will no longer be uploading any rpms rebuilt for 9.1.

The 9.2 rpms which I currently have available for dl are for
screem-0.8.2 and for gaim-0.72.

New rpms for sylpheed and sylpheed-claws will be made avaiable if/when
new versions are released, the rpms from Contrib are at this time
current.

Though I can not and Will Not rebuild everything I will from time to
time accept request for specific pkgs.

I will also rebuild for 9.2, where possible, any new versions of my pkgs
which I upload to cooker/contribs for 10.0.

Re: [newbie] Updated kernel

2003-06-26 Thread stormjumper
whatever it is, try not to reboot until you sort this out.
(although since the two kernels are very similar,
your system MAY survive a reboot)

it appears that you have one or more entries in /etc/lilo.conf where the
linux kernel (vmlinuz) isn't match properly to the initial ramdisk
(initrd.img)

IMHO, you can

1. try to troubleshoot the issue yourself,
in which case it may help to read
http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs/magic.php
specifically the section on Black Magic: Kernel Updates

2. post your lilo.conf and contents of
/boot (use ls -l instead of just ls) here.

3. try to clobber over everything by reinstalling your kernels,
clearing out your lilo.conf (remember to back up)
using the --force if necessary
rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.21.0.13mdk
followed by
rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.21.0.18mdk
it *SHOULD* work, assuming your system hasn't been drastically modified
but at the very least, have a working boot disk ready

[newbie] Updated NTFS Tools for LInux

2003-01-18 Thread Stephen Kuhn
Just though y'all would appreciate this - this is a massive update to
the already cool NTFS tools - the ones that FemmeFatale likes to muck
with so much...

Cheers!

[newbie] Updated 3com90x-1.0.0i.tar.gz file from the 3COM web page

2000-05-22 Thread Romanator

I made and error in my typing. See below:

I recently found a 3com90x-1.0.0i.tar.gz file on the 3COM web page. The
file system is different in Linux compared to Windows NT. In which
directory folder should I copy this file to?
I would like to update my 3COM drivers. However, I am new to the tar.gz
file system.

Thanks,

Roman

Sorry for making you repeat yourself, but did you do the install from the
Mandrake CD or did you download Mandrake? On their FTP site the apps are
listed as the most current ones, but in a section of the site which lists
what's included on the CD they list some older versions.

I installed from the Mandrake GPL CDROM sold by CheapBytes.

I know there was a bit of confusion...package listing at the Mandrake site
  isn't current?

That's quite likely. I just want to be certain before I make the big jump to
 Mandrake.

Check the vendor that you're buying the Mandrake stuff from and see if
they can get you a listing of what's included on the CD. I believe
CheapBytes has a full listing of everything on the CD available to view
at their website (http://www.cheapbytes.com).

Just one more question, is the RH Linux 5.2 that is included with Mandrake a
scaled-down version of the original RH 5.2 or is it the complete version? I
know there's a lot of add-ons (KDE, for one) to RH 5.2, but are there are any
 "deletions" from the orginal one?

I've never seen the original, official Red Hat 5.2, but I'd imagine that
the only things that aren't included are the commercial apps that they
shipped (RealAudio encoder and the like). Nothing glaringly obvious is
missing. It's completely usable.

[newbie] Updated KDE Apps.

1999-03-12 Thread Pankil Richards

Some of the KDE 1.1 apps listed (at the Mandrake site) as being shipped
with Mandrake 5.3 are an older version of what is being shipped in the
downloaded KDE 1.1 version. For instance, I have the downloaded version
of KDE 1.1 which includes Korganizer at version 1.0. The one listed at
the Mandrake site says version 0.9.

Could someone, who has the Mandrake CD w/KDE 1.1, confirm what version
their Korganizer is at? If I needed to upgrade, would I have uninstall
the older apps first, or would the rpm command(s) automatically take
care of the upgrade procedure?

I've installed Mandrake 5.3 (the latest release), and have Korganizer
1.0.

Here are the KDE packages that installed with 5.3 (there are probably
other packages installed as well, I just did a simple "things that begin
with K"-type search):

kdeadmin-1.1-0.2finalrh5x
kdebase-1.1-0.3finalrh5x
kdegames-1.1-0.2finalrh5x
kdegraphics-1.1-0.2finalrh5x
kdelibs-1.1-0.2finalrh5x
kdemultimedia-1.1-0.2finalrh5x
kdenetwork-1.1-0.2finalrh5x
kdesupport-1.1-0.2finalrh5x
kdetoys-1.1-0.2finalrh5x
kdeutils-1.1-0.2finalrh5x
kdf-0.3.13-2
kfortune-1.11-2
klyx-0.9.8a-fl4
korganizer-1.1-0.2finalrh5x
kpackage-1.1-1
ksiag-3.0.6-beta1
ktelnet-0.61-2
ktop-0.9.9p1-1
kvirc-0.8-3

I know there was a bit of confusion and Mandrake 5.3 was held up for
release because of the 1.1 version of KDE. Is it possible that the
package listing at the Mandrake site isn't current?

I'm not sure if this helps any. I downloaded the iso CD image and "burned" my own
CD. I imagine it's the same Mandrake CD that you get from the distributors? It's
got KOrganizer 1.0 in it.
