[newbie] Updated, now another problem....
Bit of a funny one this. KDE appears to have gone monumentally belly up! All letters in Kmail and in the KDE notification windows, appear to be double spaced now!! I have a screenshot available, as it will tell a thousand times more than I will ever be able to describe in writing! I have installed ALL available updates to MDK10 Community. Any Ideas? if you want to see the screenshot, mail me off list. Ta, JRH Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? As an addendum to my own post : if everything in KDE has gone belly up, there is one, last resort : Boot into a CLI or another GUI, i.e. Gnome. From there, delete your entire /home/user/.kde directory. That way you'll get rid of all the local configuration files, and next time you start KDE it will use the default ones. Then, you can start over with new, individual configurations. Been there, done that. I did an update of Spamassassin and lost MCC altogether. I have reinstall drakxtools and drakconf packages but there are no tools for Software management. TIA for any help. drakxtools, rpmdrake, urpmi, grpmi, rpm Specifically the rpmdrake package should be what you need but there are inter-dependencies. The Mandrake Control Centre is called by various names Dennis. drakconf, mcc, drakconf.real (the n-curses version I think) You may also need to re-install drakxtools-newt. Try: rpm --rebuilddb updatedb update-menus -v -n ldconfig [Enter] Then update your sources with the urpmi.update -a -c -f [Enter] and urpmi --auto-select [Enter] to see if you can get things back to normal. Well... I found something. It looks that the new enigmail GUI is incompatible with mozilla-1.4's (and 1.6's) classic and modern themes. To workaround it, I installed LittleMozilla theme from mozdev.org. The theme is rahter cheesy, but it's better than losing 80% of the window. Another thing is that gtk-theme-switch and gtk-theme-switch in contrib appears to be buggy. When I try to run switch, the message appears: GLib-CRITICAL **: file gstrfuncs.c: line 186 (g_strconcat): assertion `string1 != NULL' failed. Another weird thing is that seems that it is set to theme 4Missy (???) by default. And when I try to change theme to Default, another happy message appears: Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkentry.c: line 440 (gtk_entry_set_text): assertion `text != NULL' failed. When I try to fight with it again (or try switch2), the variants of these messages appear. And I am uncertain where exactly this bug report should go. Mandrake? Gnome? Can somebody give me a hint? I have updated my site for mdk 9.2. I will no longer be uploading any rpms rebuilt for 9.1. The 9.2 rpms which I currently have available for dl are for screem-0.8.2 and for gaim-0.72. New rpms for sylpheed and sylpheed-claws will be made avaiable if/when new versions are released, the rpms from Contrib are at this time current. Though I can not and Will Not rebuild everything I will from time to time accept request for specific pkgs. I will also rebuild for 9.2, where possible, any new versions of my pkgs which I upload to cooker/contribs for 10.0. Charles -- I'm on the path, he thought. I don't have to know where it leads. Re: [newbie] Updated kernel
whatever it is, try not to reboot until you sort this out. (although since the two kernels are very similar, your system MAY survive a reboot) it appears that you have one or more entries in /etc/lilo.conf where the linux kernel (vmlinuz) isn't match properly to the initial ramdisk (initrd.img) IMHO, you can 1. try to troubleshoot the issue yourself, in which case it may help to read http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs/magic.php specifically the section on Black Magic: Kernel Updates 2. post your lilo.conf and contents of /boot (use ls -l instead of just ls) here. 3. try to clobber over everything by reinstalling your kernels, clearing out your lilo.conf (remember to back up) using the --force if necessary rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.21.0.13mdk followed by rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.21.0.18mdk it *SHOULD* work, assuming your system hasn't been drastically modified but at the very least, have a working boot disk ready - Original Message - From: Miark [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Newbie [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 27, 2003 06:23 Subject: [newbie] Updated kernel What does this mean, and how do I fix it? [newbie] Updated KDE Apps.
Some of the KDE 1.1 apps listed (at the Mandrake site) as being shipped with Mandrake 5.3 are an older version of what is being shipped in the downloaded KDE 1.1 version. For instance, I have the downloaded version of KDE 1.1 which includes Korganizer at version 1.0. The one listed at the Mandrake site says version 0.9. Could someone, who has the Mandrake CD w/KDE 1.1, confirm what version their Korganizer is at? If I needed to upgrade, would I have uninstall the older apps first, or would the rpm command(s) automatically take care of the upgrade procedure?

Sorry for making you repeat yourself, but did you do the install from the Mandrake CD or did you download Mandrake? On their FTP site the apps are listed as the most current ones, but in a section of the site which lists what's included on the CD they list some older versions. I know there was a bit of confusion...package listing at the Mandrake site isn't current? That's quite likely. I just want to be certain before I make the big jump to Mandrake. Just one more question, is the RH Linux 5.2 that is included with Mandrake a scaled-down version of the original RH 5.2 or is it the complete version? I know there's a lot of add-ons (KDE, for one) to RH 5.2, but are there are any "deletions" from the orginal one? Thanks. I'm not sure if this helps any. I downloaded the iso CD image and "burned" my own CD. I imagine it's the same Mandrake CD that you get from the distributors? It's got KOrganizer 1.0 in it. My says version 1.0. Regards, Qman...
