There are two ways of getting the gui for this.
Star menu > System > Configuration > Packaging > Software Media Manager
or
Mandrake Control Center (I have an icon added to my panel. If you right-click
on a blank bit on the panel at the bottom of the screen, select Panel Menu,
Add, then navigate as above and it will create the icon for you). From
there, Software Management, then Media Manager. You will see there a list of
the software sources that your system knows about. At the beginning, your
CDs will be the only ones there.

When you've seen what I'm talking about, close it down (you need to get rid of
the lock file) then go to step 2.

OK - we'll call this step 2. Open a browser windows (Mozilla, FireFox,
Konqueror) and put in the url www/easyurpmi.zarb.org. This will take you to
a page where you will be helped to set up new, additional sources.

Make sure that you have the right version in the first choice - 10.1, I
presume. You'll find sections for Main, Contrib and a few others. In each
case choose a mirror from the dropdown list. It's a good idea to choose
mirrors that are not in your own timezone, as getting them in a quiet time
speeds up downloads.

Once you have chosen something from each section, click Go To Step 3 (I think
that's the wording) and a black box will come up with a long piece of text.
This is a set of commands. You can just copy them (mouse-highlight), then
open a console (black screen icon on tray), Session > New Root Console) and
paste in the whole of the commands you have just copied. It will take a few
minutes, probably, for the commands to set themselves up completely, but you
will be able to follow the messages where it tells you what it's doing. Once
that is complete you will have access to a great many other packages.

Last step. Charles, on www.eslrahc.com has a lot of packages that are later
versions than Mandrake can offer directly, so it's a good idea to get his
site set up as a source. Go to his webpage, select 10.1, and you will find
not only a list of packages that are available, but a command for you to copy
and paste into a root console, as you did with easyurpmi's commands. You
could stop there, but if you do you will find that trying to install any of
Charles's packages gives you messages about missing signatures, so look again
at the webpage and you will find instructions for getting his signature onto
your system. It involves downloading and installing CAE.asc.

I hope that's a little clearer now. Come back if there's anything you don't
understand.

urpmi is the command line version of Software Installer. They both do the
same job - locate the package you want and attempt to solve all dependency
problems at the same time. If you have recently installed you may have only
your CDs defined as sources. If that's so, you are missing a lot of good
stuff. Some is more recent than the CDs, and some can't be offered by
Mandrake because of licensing issues. To get these others is easy.

1) Go to easyurpmi.zarb.org and select one source from each section. You
will be given a long command to copy and paste into a root console. This
will set up all those sources for you.

2) Go to eslrahc.com, find the page for your version (10.1, I presume?) and
again paste in the command given to add his site to your sources. Here there
are lots of very uptodate packages. You will also need to import his
signature for the packages, which is done with
rpm --import http://www.eslrahc.com/10.1/CAE.asc

It seems you didn't follow the easy way, namely to "urpmi
mozilla-firefox", but downloaded the tarball from the Mozilla.org
site. In that case, it doesn't matter where the tarball is
extracted, but in order to install it system-wide (i.e. accessible
to all users) you'll have to become root. During this setup you
will be prompted to choose a location for the executables. A
clever choice might be /usr/lib or /usr/local. After the install
completes, run it first time as root (I think that's automatic).

After that, you can add it to your menu with the menu editor.

Programs you install this way really should get installed in ether the
/usr/local tree of the /opt tree. Personal preference is
/usr/local/firefox. But as others have pointed out, using urpmi takes
care of it for you. It also simplifies upgrading.

[newbie] a TAR OOPS

2005-02-15 Thread BJ Tracy
Hello All,

I just downloaded Firefox 1.0 and placed the tar.gz in my home
directory, did the tar and installed it. However during the install it
was placed in my directory.

Where should all the files go so my gui will know where it is?

TIA,
