this is very chipset adn video card specific. what works for one motherboard
does not necessarily work for other motherboards,,, experiment or know your

Boot the install CD, press F!, and try 'linux nobiospnp' (w/o

If you do have a working install, add nobiospnp to the append=

You'll need to be root to do this, then run 'lilo'.

Your append line probly has more entries, the above is just an

Then try 'nobiospnp acpi=off noapic' Both acpi and apic
affect interrupt handling and resources, so you'll need to
experiment to find which is the problem. The need for these
options indicates deficient hardware ( motherboard/bios). For
most system acpi is the problem.

I tried googling for 'lost interrupt' and was amazed how many threads
popped up. A lot of them are concerned with laptops and suspend
issues, so I presume they can be ruled out.

IIRC you have tried 'linux noapic' when booting - if you haven't
already done so, try linux noacpi. No, it's not the same, and at
least one poster believes that to be the solution.

Other solutions offered include

Disabling dma - is this possible at bootup?
Possibility of case cooling problem
Possibility of dubious ribbon cable
http://seclists.org/lists/linux-kernel/2003/Dec/6027.html reports that
a firware fix sorted one problem out.

Do any of these seem to fit Philip's case, I wonder? Clearly this is
an issue that is reported in many distros, many versions. My gut
feeling is that the last one may be relevant, as it's fairly recent,
with new hardware and the 2.6 kernel. Perhaps someone more
knowledgeable could look at the thread and comment?

Phillip; Try moving some PCI devices into different PCI
slots, and try assigning or un-assigning IRQ's to your AGP

[newbie] Linux install on WinXP

2002-11-28 Thread Sekurity Wizard
OK - I'm frustrated! I've done this 3 times now and every time the
install appears PERFECT, except when I reboot, it goes straight to
WinXP. No LILO, nothing. I take the default location for LILO from the
installer, figure it would know best, and 3 times - nothing!

How can I fix this?! How do I know where to put LILO? (boot
partition?).

Thanks - I'm lost - this sucks.

Try booting with a Win98 boot disk , running FDISK and setting the
partition where the linux boot is to ACTIVE - then reboot - you'll find
lilo happily living where it's supposed to be - and you can add your
other OS to the boot menu by typing lilo at the console prompt.

Near the beginning of the installation, it will ask where the files are

It actually turns out to be a little more difficult than that. First
off, name the folder with the installation file RedHat (maybe you named it
"Mandrake" like I did). Also, make sure you make a Supplementary disk (the
image should be listed with the boot image). Next, you need to download a
file named MV and place it in the RedHat folder (you can find the file with
Lycos FTP search (under the advanced search). The file may be downloaded
with .html as the extension, ignore the Windows warning when you delete that
extension after the download is finished.
Start the installation as normal, and when asked where you are
installing from, select 'hard drive', at which time you'll need to insert
the supplementary install disk. After setting up your partitions, you'll be
asked where the RedHat directory is located (let's say /dev/hda1). Type
that in, then press ALT+F2 to get the command prompt (#). (I'll try to show
it as you should see it). At the prompt, type (do not type #):

# ls /tmp/hdimageEnter

(you should see all of the files on the harddrive where your RedHat files
are located)
Next type:

# umount /tmp/hdimageEnter
#mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /tmp/hdimageEnter

(if you get an error message, retype it replacing 'vfat' with 'msdos')

now type:

# cd /tmp/hdimage/RedHatEnter
# lsEnter

(you should now get a listing of the files in the RedHat directory...rpms,
base, mv)
type:

# ./mv rpms XEnter
(you can type 'ls' after this command to see that rpms is gone and X is
listed)
# ./mv X RPMSEnter
(definately type 'ls' this time to see that rpms and X are gone and RPMS is
there)
# cd /
# umount /tmp/hdimage

At this point, press ALT+F1 to return to the installation screen. On the
line asking for the RedHat directory, leave it only showing '/'. Press OK,
and the installation should continue from there.

If you have any questions or problems with these instructions, you can
e-mail me.

I downloaded a copy of Linux-Mandrake 5.3 to my primary hard drive which
is dos formatted and running win95. I am installing Linux on a second
hard drive. I am using a floppy boot disk to install Linux. How can I
get the install program to use the files from the dos disk for the
install?
Thanks

You will also need to make a supplemental diskette, if you
don't already have one.
