Best and most simple set is:
2 NIC in one box - one connected to ADSL - the other to the local
 network.
1 NIC in the OTHER computer - using a crossover cable that plugs into
the other computer for the local network. No major costs. Simple.

As a person fairly new to networking with linux i can vouch... it's pretty simple. I
turned my machines off, put in the NIC's, hooked the 2 together, then I re-installed
all my OS's when I did it (i'd been tinkering too much and broke something AGAIN! lol
but mdk is SO EASY to install on my machines) and it was all done in a flash! got a
simple rc.firewall script and pow! It all worked first try and haven't had a single
problem with it.

I will have to look into this rc.firewall script. Not many people
recommend using mandrake's firewall I have noticed (in fact the
opposite, most recommend not using it). I have heard (from this list)
that gshield is an easy way to set up a firewall so perhaps I will try
it. I had been using guarddog with some success, but I am not entirely
happy with it.

To everyone, thanks for your advice. I am currently installing 8.2 and
looking forward to playing with my new home network. Hopefully a
re-install of 9.0 wont be necessary since I have just started to settle
in with this one. p.s. I went with the extra NIC that some guy sold me
used for $5. Hard to beat those prices.
Joe.

Re: [newbie] looking for easy, cheap, way to share files, cable connection between two boxes

2002-12-16 Thread Technoslick
Of course, Stephen is very correct, and Brandon's two Option's work great,
however...

What's best from a standpoint of ease, security and performance is
purchasing an internet gateway/router/firewall from Linksys. Mine is a four
port switch, as well, but they also make even smaller units. I think the
going rate for this device is around $70-80 USD. That may sound a little
steep for your wallet, but consider these advantages over using a second NIC
in the MDK 8.2 box:

1) Switches allow full duplex communication. Both your machines get 100% of
the bandwidth for network and Internet. When your 8.3 machine is print
spooling for the XP machine, you will appreciate the lighter feel on that
machine while you are still trying to work or surf the Web. You set-it up
through your Web browser for static addressing (my recommendation for this
set-up), or go super-easy and let it DHCP the IP addresses for the two
machines. Plug each machine into the device and your DSL or cable modem into
the device.

2) While Linux's software firewall has a lot more options and control
capability, a hardware firewall is always preferable since it is harder to
hack. You can run both, if you are that paranoid. I would always opt for
that extra warm feeling of a hardware firewall. In this case, it comes as
part of the package.

3) You do not need to have your 8.2 machine running for the XP machine to
surf the web!

4) When the time comes to add another machine, you can add either a tiny
five port Linksys Workstation Switch to the device or a hub. With the
cross-over, you still have to start over again.

5) The cost of the device will pay for itself over the cost of a second IP
from your provider in the first or second year, depending on the amount you
are asked to pay. The device will comfortably handle up to 32 computers
simultaneous connections to one IP address from the high-speed source,
depending on how you set the rest of the growing network up.

None of this relieves the need for you to have 8.2 running for Samba
services. Check out http://www.linksys.com for what they have. There are
other brands that work.I make no bones about being very biased toward
hardware devices to provide ancillary protection. I can be very cash poor at
times, so I am not always able to go high-tech, either.

You have choices.

T :-)

Sent my reply to Stephen instead of the list, wasn't watching what I was
doing. However, my reply to this was, you can get a very inexpensive
ethernet switch (8port for $30 so a four port should be less) and have both
boxes surfing at the same time without packet collision problems. A nic in
each puter and two cat 5 cables and you are good to go. Just another
alternative. It makes for better surfing if both computers are on the
internet at the same time. Stephen, can you share the internet with a
crossover cable? If so I learned a new thing again today. HTH

Re: [newbie] looking for easy, cheap, way to share files, cable connection between two boxes

2002-12-15 Thread Brandon Vanderberg
Option 1.
You can connect two computers together with a x-over cable. This
does require a 2nd NIC in your 8.2 box.

The advantage is that you don't have to buy hub or switch. Also, you
only really need to worry about having a firewall on the 8.2 box. It
will protect the other box.

The disadvantage is that if the 8.2 box is down for some reason, you
lose Internet connectivity for the other computer. You'll also have
to configure Internet Sharing. Not a big deal.

Option 2.
Buy a hub or switch, connect both computers and your cable modem to
it. Have your cable company provide an additional IP for this second
box. I know Cox charges something like 6 or 7 bucks for the second
IP.

Some side notes - With only 3 devices on a hub, you shouldn't see many
collisions. The prices for NICs, hub and switches are so close (for
decent ones) that it's pretty much a wash as far as price is concerned.

HTH,

~Brandon
