Gosh-darn Canucks are everywhere. Even here. Dang. Can't escape'em. Next
thing ya know they'll be building a dang ice hockey rink in Wollongong
(not that I'd complain - I'd be one of the first out there trying to get
on an amateur team playing left wing)

Frank, I only got the behaviour you described after a large update

Crtl-Alt-Backspace to restart X (and mdkkdm). This only solved it
temporarily, a reboot fixed it for good. kdm didn't have the problem.

Since you also said you tried kdm, I take it you have the
kdebase-kdm rpm installed. Edit /etc/sysconfig/desktop and make
sure, or add the line DISPLAYMANAGER=kdm

Done. Didn't fix it for me :(

On a hunch I tried to re-install mdkkdm and kdebase-kdm in case any of
the files were corrupt. I did this with rpm -e and then urpmi...

still no joy. I guess I'll have to live with gdm...not the end of the
world I guess, but I hate having an unsolved problem.

Thanks for the suggestion, I really appreciate your help.

[newbie] mdkkdm and kdm not working

2003-04-03 Thread Frank Cote
I have a strange problem that I can't find how to fix, I'm hoping
someone might have a solution or at least a hint.

After my first boot in 9.1 where everything worked fine (booted into
KDE, changed a few settings, added 2 lines to my modules.conf so sound
would work on my laptop) I rebooted and MDKKDM seemed to load properly,
but logging on to any of the listed window managers only results in a
background and a plain X-Console, nothing else...zip. zero. nada.

I was able to su to root, init 3 and do a startx into KDE which worked
fine. So I used MCC to switch to KDM. KDM gives me the same exact
result.

I then switched to GDM and that works. However I'd really like to fix
KDM, as I like that one better.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Frank
