Re: [newbie] Usenet

Usenet is like the original message boards. It used to be the main way to
communicate over the internet, but now most people don't use it or even know
about it. Download PAN ( www.superpimp.org Yes, that is the real domain name)
to check out Usenet. You'll have to configure Pan to your news settings, which
you can get from your ISP.

now that i finally got netscape up, i want to check out usenet, because i've
heard a lot about how it has a lot to offer in terms of articles and
subjects. I searched all over the net, but i have only find a site,
www.usenet.com, that sells access to usenetis this the vaunted usenet? I
 thought it was free.

Your internet service provider may indeed have a free usenet news server to
subscribers. There are a few free news servers left but not many. Deja news
provides a free web access to usenet.

There are well over 25,000 news groups on usenet. The exact count varies from
server to server.

If you do not have a news server (nntp server) with your ISP then you can
subscribe to one on the internet.

Well...if your ISP offers a news server connection then it is free. Well
sort of. You have to pay for your internet connection, but access to the
usenet groups then comes with your subscription. If, on the other hand,
you're an AOhell user, then the best you can do at the moment is get an
account at Dejanews, which is free, and scan the news groups that interest
you.

Otherwise get a real ISP and you have more access to news groups than you
know what to do with. Don't be afraid...there is life after AOL...honest!

What's the best way to set up mandrake to download news over a ppp
connection to be read offline? I'd like to use trn as my newsreader.

James.

The 'suck' package works well. There's also something called 'leafnode'
that works. Leafnode doesn't work so well with Netscape though. With
trn, you should be okay with either.
