You don't Linux does not use workgroups. I assume that you are running Samba
somehow, as Samba uses workgroup names to meet Windows networking
conventions.

The Windows machines on a network need to have a workgroup, Linux machines
don't have to have a workgroup, but may to fool Windows.

Do you mean that it doesn't matter? I can connect to windows machines on
a different workgroup (MSHOME) but does it mean no matter what the linux

be the case but...

Install ksambaplugin and your KDE control Centre will have a nice little GUI
in which you can configure Samba including the workgroup name.

[newbie] Workgroup change

2003-09-27 Thread dlwiggers
I know someone told me how to do this a couple of weeks ago, but I
just can't find my notes.

How do I change workgroups so komba2 will see my 9.2 cooked box as
part of the windows workgroup?

Take a look at /etc/samba/smb.conf for the line starting workgroup

Well, that didn't turn out so good.

I changed workgroup to home workgroup to match the other boxes and
it interfered with the samba being run by the VMware windows thing.

I probably was supposed to reconfigure vmware to fix that, but I
panicked and uninstalled VMware altogether. I can reinstall that
but there must be another place where workgroup is established
because komba2 doesn't see the other boxes yet either.

Hell, earlier today I was tickled because I knew how to put the
shell icon on my desktop. Good grief.

Did you have the same hostname set in both VMWare and Linux? As far as Samba
is concerned VMWare is a different computer and so must have a different
hostname.
Samba will use the Linux hostname as the Samba hostname by default, but you
can set it manually using the 'hostname=' parameter in /etc/samba/smb.conf

Don't forget to restart Samba after any change

Thanks Anne and Derek

I did it right the first time, but for some reason the network
connection went down. For lack of another way, I went to mcc and
restarted with the wizard.

This time I checked the internet connection and the komba2
connection before leaving mcc. All was well, mdkgroup and home
workgroup and the internet.

When I closed mcc, the connection went down. I reopened mcc,
started the connection, and this time cancelled instead of saying
ok. Network stayed up.

Must be the cooker mystique?

Well, time for the VMware again. Four more to go.

Best idea is to NOT use the VMWare SMB services - the virtual machine
you create can live happily with your normal SMB/NMB services - you'll
find that it does in fact get in the way...
