since I will never set foot in that cesspool again, let me just say

I don't anticipate a flame war Yankl, but I very carefully didn't agree or
disagree with the cheap shot at Bush. I just acknowledged that I found the
crack itself humorous.

My political conviction or affiliation is of the same order as my religious
beliefs. Non-existant and/or not subject to public discussion.

Your preferences are your own business, and you're welcome to them. As are
Stephen and T.B.M/JoeHill/Haywire Mac. If I thought any differently I'd be
subscribed to the OT list where philosophical debate seems the norm.

I still found, from past experience reading their stated thoughts on the
subject, the remark humorous; and whether I agree or disagree with the
opinion doesn't lessen my respect for them.

Or you.

I'm fairly certain you aren't alone but this is the wrong forum for that
subject.

Yankl:
You are definitely NOT the only conservative republican on the list, but
Haywire Mac is NOT one of them. (First of all, he lives in Canada, a country
remarkable for its deficiency of Republicans. OTOH, they have a party with
the peculiar name of Progressive Conservative. Parse that one.) However,
there have been several political flamewars in the past on this list, and one
of them got way out of hand. It didn't take too long before a number of users
objected. Eventually, calmer heads prevailed, and an OT list was established
for that kind of stuff. (Sorry, I don't have the link, but I'm sure that
someone will provide it.)

Hope you've had a better week than Rush.

Well, free software is basically a liberal idea. I mean
liberal in the European sense, not the US sense where it has typically
come to refer to someone who is against individual responsibility, wants
all rapists and murderers to go free, and wants to eliminate God and
Jesus from the lexicon (this at least as the far-right would define
liberal). In the European sense I think it has to do with
freedom--free markets (thus the hatred for the evil empire), freedom to
do what we want with the hardware and software we purchase, freedom by
allowing anyone who wants to participate.

I'd like to separate forever the words liberal democrat and
conservative republican. The democrats have given liberalism a dirty
name and whored themselves out and refuse to defend liberalism, trading
the possibility of electoral victory for the principles of liberalism.
And, I know many a fine republican who I feel are harmed by the label
conservative, though it doesn't have quite the damning sense of
liberal. As George H. Bush said of Dukakis with utter disgust--That
guy's a *liberal*! A card-carrying member of the ACLU!

Please, I say this not to incite discussion, I'm just making a
statement.

I'm getting them too, every time I start Kopete
and haven't been able to block the sender.
The only answer seems to be don't shut down. ;-)

This may be related to MS's recent announcement that they were changing the
MSN protocol again and that third-party clients would probably no longer work
with MSN Messenger. If you are currently using this service, you might want
to consider switching to a different one before your access drops altogether.

I have a feeling that the message that you are getting is from MS, probably no
way to block those.

Oh right. Bugger.

I'll get onto the Kopete list and see what they are going to do about this.
May have to adapt the plugin or something for the new settings.

Seeing as I am not using MSN on a Microsoft machine I can see myself being
able to apply this fix somehow!

I would say it's a safe bet there's no need to worry. IIRC, AOL tried
this way back with Trillian, and the fight went on for some time til AOL
eventually just gave up.

No idea but if they do pull the plug then there is a stable build of 0.7.2
on CVS.

Just wish I knew what CVS is or how to do it even!

usually the site offering CVS will give you instructions on grabbing
CVS (most of the time you can just copy and paste the command line
entries from the web page), if you have all the development tools
installed, it's really not much different than compiling from source the
normal way, except that you are getting up-to-the-minute code in some
cases.

RE: [newbie] SMS

2001-10-21 Thread Franki

Hi,

Try these guys, they have a free sms backend that you can control via SOAP
or Simple Object Access Protocol.
Its an XML type setup where applications on different platforms in different
languages can talk to each other using port 80 so as to eliminate firewall
problems in corperate networks, (thats a really simplified explanation,
there is alot more to it..)

Still its pretty easy to understand and you shouldn't have any problem
creating a sms app at your end.

if you are doing it with perl, there are some modules like SOAP::Lite that
may be handy.
