Spamassasin has prebuilt filters that can be used by it to scan emails that
contain virii. I have been using it for months now with kmail, and as I don't
run WinBlows anymore, my machine just dumps all virus email as junk.

That should be easy enough for me to do, thanks. As Josh pointed out
though, How successful are you with cleaning an NTFS partition in this
manner?

As long as you set the read/write perms correctly, you'll do fine.

I scan customer's machines when they come in here - but that's over the
network.

I use a removeable HDD bay for this purpose as often once the virus is
in place, I cannot install antivirus on their computers. So, at present
I'm booting into Windows XP (sorry for swearing!) and using my copy of
Norton System Works to knock the virus on the head first.

I would dearly love to use Mandrake for this because at present it
involves two reboots: One into windows to update my own virus
definitions and check for any more winblows patches to protect my own
system. And the second to insert the clients HDD (non hot pluggable ide
bay) and scan the bloody thing.

ClamAV and F-Prot can both scan a windows partition from Linux.
However, I doubt they would be much help if you are trying to clean an ntfs
partition.

Does anybody out there know of/use/recommend a virus scanning package
for linux? I'm hoping to use one to scan clients hard drives without
having to leave mandrake and boot into Winblows XP.

Re: [newbie] Virus scanner for linux (no I havenn't lost my mind)

2004-05-26 Thread Marc
Well from a commercial point of view.
1. www.sophos.com has a Linux anti virus client, its easy enough to install as
long as you have glibc installed, well an up to date version that is. The
linux .tar.gz file(s) are all on the cd's and I can reccomend it, as I use it
personally at work, and it works like a dream.

2. www.drweb.ru is a Linux based virus scanner, I have not used it yet so I
cannot vouch for its reliability, however it is mentioned during the MDK 10
CE install process and therefore I am led to believe that it cannot be all
that bad? I am planning to set it up and run some tests with it.

But in all honesty if you have access to a legal copy of sophos, then I would
reccomend it over anything else. We have never had a single issue with it to
this day, and we have been using it for quite some time now !

Kind Regards
