:) nope.. just being polite.. :) hope you all don't mind.. :) as for the 64mb of ram.. i don't think i will be able to get more ram.. there's only 4 slots and i've used up all slots for the edo ram.. and for now.. it's quite hard to get edo ram here.. and i think it'll be real expensive too.. :( so anyone had any bright ideas out there??? meanwhile i will try out all your suggestion and c wat happens first.. will keep you update.. :) Lots of hugs and kisses, kahwoon... :) - Original Message - From: et [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, June 20, 2002 6:38 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] Pentium 233MMX On Wednesday 19 June 2002 09:17 am, you wrote: On Wed 19 Jun 2002 14:30, kahwoon's wrote: First of all.. NEED MORE RAM... 64 megs, and using some for onboard video make less than enough, try using less ram (the setting should be in the BIOS for your video, 2 megs might be enough for video and will give more to the OS) Chuck in all the RAM you can lay your hands on. I found ML8.2 to be very usable on old specs PC's providing you turn off as many unused services as possible. 8.0 and 8.1 didn't go anywhere (let alone TODAY.:o) ) but 8.2 is fine on my Thinkpad 166, 40M ram. It's not a fast booter or loader but once it's on it's way it works quite well. The only distro that gave real speed was Slackware but that's beside the point and another story. A desktop 166, 96Mb even has KDE running (Icewm is default though) at reasonable speed and the P2 128M desktop just had a standard install and does everything the P4 512M can do at a slight speed loss. The only 'hitch' is the install which needs a fair chunck of RAM. On a desktop no problem..just borrow some, but on the laptop's it's starting to get worrying. So probably 8.2 is end of the road for the P1's and Mandrake. Harm Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

About the worst question I've seen yet. You can't compare the two. One has 5000 instructions in the kernel, other around 200 ( i think ). So yeah, linux is way faster. Plus Mandrake doesn't have the 386+ source, and is compiled for the 586+ class machines. If you are trying to compare X windows to your windows desktop, you will never get the same performance from linux. As far as I'm concerned, if you want fast Xwindows environment, get a Mac. BSD kernel :) yummmy Regards, Vasiliy Boulytchev Colorado Information Technologies Inc. - Original Message - From: shane [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, June 19, 2002 9:17 AM Subject: Re: [newbie] Pentium 233MMX -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 On Tuesday 18 June 2002 06:58 am, kahwoon's did speak unto the huddled masses, saying: i feel that with LM8.2 in my Pentium 233MMX, i really feel.. Well first do not log in as root. That message that pops up telling you not to is there for a reason. The world will not end if you log in as root, but it is a good habit to anytime you need to do anything as root to open a user terminal and issue the command su You will then be root user. Second. I assume you have a CD in the drive when you try to browse to it? Note you will not be able to browse to an audio CD. and er. my sound card.. i have a Creative Vibra 128 sound card.. i think LM successfully installed it.. but it sounds so slow.. er.. imean soft.. can't seem to hear it.. :( Check your mixer settings KMenuMultimediaSoundkmix you can save the settings once you have adjusted them. and when i try to play mp3 files with XMMS.. the song played is like.. er.. jagged.. er.. noisy and broken.. :( wat happen? does anyone have any idea?? Seems like your computer cannot cope with MP3s while running KDE, you do not say how much memory you have, but whatever it is it is not enough. The best thing you can do is switch to a lighterweight window manager. Your computer was designed for Win98, yet KDE is comparable to Windows XP in terms of its system requirements. Examples of alternative window managers are :- iceWM is very Win95 like and will be easy for a newbie to use, XFce is very fast, but requires manual set up. Blackbox or Fluxbox are both *very* fast, but you will have to get used to having no desktop icons. You will also find some applications are much faster than others. Most KDE apps will be slow on your computer. Example of fast applications are, Galeon or Opera browsers, Abiword word processor, Gnumeric spreadsheet, gtcd CD player, xmms multimedia player xwc file manager. All these things are on your CD's. You can have fun trying them all out (except Abiword which is available by download) also.. is it me ... or.. i feel that with LM8.2 in my Pentium 233MMX, i really feel.. Windows98SE runs faster thanLM8.2 could there be any setting that i might have miss out?? My 233MHz 96MB laptop positively *flies* if I run it under fluxbox... Much faster than Win98. Under KDE it is just 'OK' HTH derek k.. that's the update from me.. :) :D Lots of hugs and kisses, kahwoon... :) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? RE: [newbie] Pentium 233MMX
8.2 runs pretty well on my 300PL, but that has 160mb ram and has a UDMA100 controller card and 40gig 7200rpm hard drive as well as a TNT2 PCI card. and I only use KDE if there is something that I need to do that requires it. other then that its icewm. Incidently for the gentleman that posted recently who also had a 300pl: mine is a HX chipset based board, it has edo dimm slots, (not simm). it has an onboard Matrox Mystique with its own ram.(not shared memory). Intel 10/100 onboard Network Adaptor. All of which was found by mandrake, including both video cards. I think its better to say that KDE and Gnome from 8.2 are equivalent to XP.. not 8.2 itself, for the most part, from the console, it seems faster then 8.1 or 7.2 (never tried 8.0). Its only when you tack a big Window manager on that things slow down at all, Icewm on 8.2 on this 233mmx is about the same speed as WinXP is on my 400mhz PII laptop which has 280mb ram.. so it compares very well. rgds Frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of civileme Sent: Wednesday, 19 June 2002 11:59 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] Pentium 233MMX Vasiliy Boulytchev wrote: did you mount your CDrom and floppy?
