So for now I use KOrganizer journal and have to flick thru each day to find what I'm looking for - the problem being I've been using it since October last year, thats a lot of entries to hunt thru : ( I use it solely for keeping a record of how I fix/configure linux since I have a habit of later forgetting how I had fixed something. I figured that I'm going to have to learn to program (only used crappy VB a while back) to write the app myself so I've started learning python (to start with). as a general rule, if you are going to be doing any form of scripting you have to have a basic understanding of how programing works. Understanding concepts such as flow control, the basic operators, what types of data you can store, these are all required to do scripting (in any real sense). But back to the original topic, what PROGRAMS or SCRIPTS do you feel are missing that you would like to have? Re: [newbie] What programs are you looking for?
Dear Nelson, No I don't need to learn to program. Sorry to be so blunt, but frankly I have zero interest in programming beyond a very basic level. I edit scripts for games (used to anyway nearly everyday) and it IS very close to programming in a sense. The difference is if I want an alias function *same as a linux alias basically* Or something more complex than say: bind key weapon 6; say_team HELP I'm under fire! I ask some programming friends. To be honest, I just want to be able to edit scripts in linux w/out screwing them up. And if I do, I need to be able to figure out how to un-edit them properly. So to that end I'm trying to gain an understanding of how to use a shell properly while still logged in to Xwindow, as an example. *As an aside, I have fubared my sys enough so I couldn't login to Xwindow. Had to login a shell prompt Unfubar my script for video I'd edited on the advice of a tutorial.* Anyway I hope that clarifies the issue. Frankly, I'm just lost with scripts function calls. :( Femme Nelson Bartley wrote: as a general rule, if you are going to be doing any form of scripting you have to have a basic understanding of how programing works. David: emacs or Xemacs would have more than the power you wish. Just dont expect it to be intuitive and don't expect to be able to harness that power this week. On the plus side, the Xemacs/emacs version that comes with Mandrake has a full newbie tutorial and an elisp HTML editor (i had to download the HTML for my MDK7.1) Nobody would write a NoteTabPro clone for Linux and only the original author could be expected to. Re: [newbie] What programs are you looking for?
I have talked to Eric Fookes (NoteTabPro Creator) a few times about writing a Linux version. It is now possiblebut that isn't going to happen for linux until he feels it can produce a viable income from it. which at the current time he does not. I don't blame him at all as far as free software goes, he has already given a great deal in Note Tab Light (for windows). A very nice fellow just wish he was more into Linux... :) I like BlueFish just would like more features added (plus it has a tendancy to crash once in a while). but all in all it is a nice editor. I have looked at xEmacs.. but it isn't the most user friendly tool available.. same with vim / Gedit / and Kate but like I said .. BlueFish isn't badQuantra isn't too bad either and the others are probably fine editors if you wish to learn the keyboard shortcuts etc( I just havent had tons of free time yet.) NoteTabPro and NoteTabLight have a clip tool/editor that is a great time saver.. I code Html and Javascript and a small amount of perl by hand and love doing thatbut sometimes repetitive code can be QUICKLY set up with the clip tool they have. I will look into Xemacs more. maybe if I read alot more about it... ? :) I don't think making a program intuitive is an unreasonable request.. however I concede that what may be inuitive to one person may not be intuitive to another. The learning curve for some parts of LInux is steep.. yet some parts are easy. I just need to get my feet wet with the editors more. * Nelson Bartley asked I've begun to develop an insterest in Linux programming and I was wondering what applications, you as the linux beginner, are looking for? I was giving him my honest answer the lack of an editor that performs the tasks I need is the ONLY thing keeping a windows partition on it I love Gimp/Gftp/Gqview/Opera . they are AS GOOD AS or BETTER than the windows counterparts. and the last hurdle for me is the scanner and the Text/Html editor.
