Are you starting X with startx?
I find it strange that XF86_S3 would run an X 4.2 server!
Anyone on the list has any idea?

You are running X 4.2 and not 3.3.6,
If you check the Supported software:
  http://www.xfree86.org/
  Support, Documentation and Resources
  XFree86 video drivers support status
  S3
You will find the restrictions as to the support (I would assume your card
 is supported in 4.2)
 I checked it: 4.2 supports my S3Trio64V+

You might want to restrict vertical refresh to 50-60 just to check that
 the monitor is not
switching off because the frequency is too high (75 according to the log
 that should be OK?)

these are the frenquencies I took from my monitor's official home page
 H-Freq.
  30 KHz ~ 54 KHz

  V-Freq.
  50 Hz ~ 120 Hz

  Dot Rate
  80 MHz

If nothing works then try 3.3.6 by changing /etc/X11/X to a symlink to
 /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_S3

 /etc/X11/X is already a symlink to /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_S3

 and
  polishing your /etc/X11/XF86Config

 what does polishing means?

If that does not work then I am out of ideas...

then who can I ask some help about it?
  Lionel

 Thank you again.

You may get the same result without going back to 6.2 by forcing the
install program to select X
3.3.6 (I believe there is a preferx3 or something like that in the conf
parms) This is what I did
for an antique laptop with RH 7.2, it runs nice and accelerated with X
3.3.6 and hideously slow
 with 4.1 and vesa...
You could have a look in /usr/X11R6/bin to see whether there are a few
XF86_whatever (these being
the 3.3.6 servers) if there is one you recognise as you old friend (often
XF86_SVGA possibly
XF86_S3) Then it suffices to change /etc/X11/X from a symlink to
/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 (the X
4.x.x server) to /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_whatever and to ask Xconfigurator to
generate the apropriate
 XF86Config

 Lionel
I checked the X link, and it actually goes to XF86_S3 I tried XF86_SVGA,
but I had the same horrible result: at 800x600 24 bit I get my monitor
turned off...

Could you go to the log /var/log/XFree86.0.log and post it as well as the XF86Config
(resp
XF86Config-4 if X is mixed up) which the log tells you it is using
by the way check the specs of your monitor just in case you are getting too high a
refresh rate...

2002-10-25 Thread Lionel Lecoq
You may still have 1024x768 in the mode line which could cause the problem because X
would be
creating a virtual screen and be lacking the memory for it...
Additionally, I don't recall which distro you have, if it is one which generates 2
config files
one for X 3.3.6 and the other for X 4.x.x you might be trying to hack the wrong one.
Check whether you are running X 4 or X 3 (check the log - /var/log/XFree86.0.log -
where you can
also find out which config file is used) or X -version.

Re: R: R: R: [Newbie]RedHat 7.3, S3 Trio64V+ and Sampo Alphascan 411: monitor turns off if I try 24 bit mode

I use depth 24 (theoretically identical to 32...) you could try that, but I am puzzled
by your
first error message: Symbol xf86InterpretEDID etc.
possibly someone else may help there...

You may still have 1024x768 in the mode line which could cause the problem
 because X would be
creating a virtual screen and be lacking the memory for it...
Additionally, I don't recall which distro you have, if it is one which
 generates 2 config files
one for X 3.3.6 and the other for X 4.x.x you might be trying to hack the
 wrong one.
Check whether you are running X 4 or X 3 (check the log -
 /var/log/XFree86.0.log - where you can
also find out which config file is used) or X -version.

I checked XF86Config-4, which is the one my RedHat 7.3 uses, and it is ok:

 Section Screen
  Identifier Screen0
  Device S3 Trio64 (generic)
  Monitor Sampo AlphaScan 411
  DefaultDepth 32
  Subsection Display
   Depth 32
   Modes 800x600
  EndSubSection
  Subsection Display
   Depth 16
   Modes 1024x768
  EndSubSection
  Subsection Display
   Depth 8
   Modes 1024x768
  EndSubSection
 EndSection

I always get my monitor turned off, I use Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to exit

 I tried startx startx.log

If I try 24 bit (when I say 24 bit mode I mean 32 bit mode, and when I say
32 bit mode I mean 24 bit mode...) with Xconfigurator my monitor turns off,
with both (800x600 and 640x480) the resolutions available... thank you
again, I'm thinking about returning at my old RedHat 6.2, this 7.3 is also
too slow for my Pentium MMX 266 Mhz with a 2 megs video card...

[Newbie]RedHat 7.3, S3 Trio64V+ and Sampo Alphascan 411: monitor turns off if I try 24 bit mode

2002-10-24 Thread

This is my problem! I Always used 24(32)bit with 800X600 resolution on Windows 98,
Mandrake 8.1 and RedHat 6.2, and everything was ok. now, if i try 16 bit 1024X768 it's
ok, but if I try 32 bit the monitor just turns off while the system continue to load.
I didn't have any problem during the installation, and I'm sure I choosed the right
driver; the horyz and vert frequency are ok, I saw them in the config file... please,
help me

2002-10-24 Thread Diego Cardinali

Are you sure that your grafic-card supports 32Bit in the resolution
1042X786. Cause as i can see you also running in windows98 an MD8.1 and
RH6.2 in a lower resolution. So maybe the configs are correct for your
monitor but whick grafic-card do you use?

 Renè

I'm sure that my grafic card (S3 Trio64V+) DOESN'T support 32bit in
1024X786, but I'm sure that it supports 800X600 in 32bit resolution

Re: R: [Newbie]RedHat 7.3, S3 Trio64V+ and Sampo Alphascan 411: monitor turns off if I try 24 bit mode

2002-10-24 Thread Lionel Lecoq
Then why are you trying to run 1024x768 with 32 bit?
During installation you don't get the final resolution unless you use the test option.
If your problem is that you get the wrong resolution automatically then go into your
XF86Config
(resp. XF86Config-4 if that's what your distro uses) and then go to the screen
section, there you
will find one or several display subsection and possibly a default resolution.
I would remove the 1024x768 from the mode line for the 32 (24?) resolution
and if you don't have one I would create a display subsection for 16bit with 1024x768
in order to
have the choice between 800x600 at 24 and 1024x768 at 16
If you don't know how to do it scream and I will post an example...

No, my explanation wasn't clear, sorry.
The problem is that the monitor turns off when I try 800X600 AT 32 BIT!
that's all!
Anyway thank you!
