RE: [newbie] LAN connectivity

2000-06-19 Per discussione Jose M. Sanchez

Not enough information.

Your explanation is a little terse.

Have you enabled routing?
Have you set up Masq?

What are the IP's involved and all pertinent data.

What lines did you add for Masq?

Did you read the Masq howto?

Did you understand it heh... I'm being facetious...

(hey it IS complex, but you only need the simple example to get you going...
worry about firewall rules later...)

What/where is your DNS?

Etc., etc., etc.

RE: [newbie] TNT2 on X4.0..

2000-06-19 Per discussione Jose M. Sanchez

I have not tried these programs, but I have used the GLMesa demos.

The TNT2 rocks with XFREE4.0.

Then ants in Moebius RUN around the moebius strip.

They used to walk when I had a Voodoo2.

All the GL screensavers and demo programs work fine.

I merely performed a clean expert install, electing to use 4.0.

Do you know if its possible to configure startx (easy) to solve it ?

   Hi Gica,
Mandrake found my zip drive alright. When you first installed it
with
your installation disk does it can for scsi devices? If not, you will
probably have to manually loan the module and edit fstab.
Here is what I done to get my external drive working.

   Mkdir /mnt/zip

   insmod parport
   insmod ppa
   mount -t msdos /dev/sdX4 /mnt/zip

You shouldn't have to load parport.o. Since we aren't using pre 5.2.

Add the folling line to /etc/fstab

   /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip vfatuser,noauto 0 0

That entire line needs to be in the fstab file.
I use /dev/sda4. That will probably work with you but no guarantees
there.

Then just type: mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip
your drive should light up and initialize. BTW: If you don't have
a zip disk in the drive when you tried to access it on your desktop,
it will give you an error. :)

Here is another way to get it working. My friend had success using
this.

   mkdir /mnt/zip
   cd /mnt
   insmod #imm
   mount -t msdos /dev/sdb4 /mnt/zip

   Hope this helps!

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.1 inst-iso howto

2000-06-19 Per discussione Charles A Edwards

Ottavia
Since the install ISO is 649MB you should not try to burn it on a 650MB
blank. Pony and several others make 700MB CD-Rs but be sure you do not pick
up an audio only CD-R.
NERO trys to make it hard to record from an ISO. There is no info in the
manual or on their web site. Here is what you need to do:
1) Find the folder to which you downloaded the ISOs, right click on each and
choose rename;
mandrake 71-ext.iso change to mandrake 71-ext.nrg
mandrake 71-inst.iso change to mandrake 71-inst.nrg
2) Launch NERO
3) Close the New Compilation window so that you have only the main window
open.
4) From the toolbar along the top of the window select CD Recorder/ Choose
Recorder and be sure your CD-RW is picked
as the recording device.
5) From the File menu select Burn image. In the pop-up window navigate to
the folder with the .nrg file and click on one and click OK
6) A Foreign Image File box will open. Click OK.
7)A Foreign Image Setting box will open. Change it were necessary to show
the following values: Data mode 1; Block Size 2048: and the Swapped option
should be checked.Click OK.
8) A Write CD window will open. If you have not done much burning and are
not familiar with your CD-RWs abilities check all 4 boxes, test speed,
simulate, burn, and finalize. By doing this NERO will auto select the burn
speed. Finally in the top right of the window click the Write button and the
process of burning the CD will begin.
When the 1st CD is finished follow steps 5-8 to create the 2nd.
Hope I have not made it seem too complicated. If you have any problems or
other questions you can reply to the list or, contact me direct if you
choose.

[newbie] A Few Questions

2000-06-19 Per discussione Don Hensley

1) I have a 500 mhz processor but Linux shows it running at 475, should I
worry?

2) I have one of those built in sound cards, with C-Media Electronics
chips-ICM18738 which sndconfig found and set up but it seems that the window
managers keep crashing the darn thing. The CD player works great but system
sounds will work for about a dozen sounds and then silence(does not effect the
cd player but does effect the mp3 player). The MP3 player works great as long
as I have system sounds turned off. If I lose sound and log out and back into
KDE sounds return until they crash again. Any ideas

3) I had to re-install Mandrake 7.0 once in the month I have been operating. I
found out the hard way dont log in as root and leave it for several hours. A
thunderstorm came through and momentary knocked the power off, just enough to
reboot it. Now it rebooted fine and I worked on it for several hours that
night, but in the morning I turned it on and while the boot seemed fine it
could not run x. After trying everything I could think of I finally after two
hours reloaded the system. More then likely X's configuration file was damaged
and it could not load the right video driver. Even using the so-called rescue
disk I made durring the first installation would not work. Now I was able to
control the last part of the boot but I could not find a right combination of
yes/no's that would get me into a non-graphical screen.
Is there a way to do a safe mode boot??

4) I have seen many people of the list knocking PCI modems, but many of us
can't afford an external modem. I now have a PCI modem that works fine, it
was the only external at Best Buy that had a Linux compatible label on it. Its
an Actiontec 56k internal call waiting modem and come with instructions on
setting it up for linux at the command line and also writing a new line to the
/ect/rc.d/rc.local file so it will be auto configure on start up. No problems
and it works fine , at least one company tries to support Linux.

5) Before I had to reinstall I had installed Acrobat Reader, but it had errors
everytime I used it. Any thoughts before I try again?

6)Does the normal install have the c-compilers?

Thanks for any help,
Don Hensley

I have seen this error quite a bit on the news groups,
with no real answer. I am attempting to install
Mandrake Linux 7.1 via FTP install. I am using the
ftp.eecs.umich.edu mirror to install. After the
install states it is checking to see which packages
are available, I get this error "depslist.ordered

 been able to resolve?

Thank you very much for your prompt attention,

[newbie] Mounting CD on scd0

2000-06-19 Per discussione Bart Simons

Hello,

I'm using Linux Mandrake for a year now, and followed the new releases.
Recently I downloaded Mandrake71-inst.iso. When I booted the cdrom the
image was loaded, but then I got the following error message: "I could
not mount a cd on /dev/scd0". I did not have this problem with Mandrake
70-2. My machine is a Pentium 400 with Adaptec 2940 U/W , one scsi
cdrom, one scsi cdwriter, one scsi harddisk and one IDE harddisk. Is
this a bug or is there another explanation?
Thanks in before.

[newbie] Remote Printing Problem

2000-06-19 Per discussione Wendell Gragg

I finally got 7.0 to boot from the second drive and got LILO where I wanted
it, but now I have a different problem. I cannot print to a remote printer
on an Intel Netport Express print server. I can ping it. I can access all
of the settings from Netscape, but when I define the printer and try to run
a test page, it tells me connection refused, cannot start daemon.

I did an lpc status and it says that everything is enabled and there is a
file in the spooler but no daemon is present.

I have looked in the printing howto and in several other places (as well as
this list archives) but can't seem to find anything. I am sure that I am
missing something very simple. Does anyone have any ideas?

[newbie] installation question

2000-06-19 Per discussione Andrew Shissler

I'm having a problem installing Mandrake Linux on my
PC. It's a 200MHz Pentinum. Whenever I run the
install program from the Installation CD from my PC, I
select that I want to install Linux on a Windows
partition. Then the PC reboots. From the text
message on the screen it looks like install program is
detecting hardware (i.e. it finds my CDROM). It even
displays a message like "second stage install". At
this point it seems like it's querying the VGA card so
it can display DrakX in graphics mode. Unfortunately,
when it tries to do this, it displays a black screen
with 2 vertical gray lines. It seems like DrakX has a
problem with my VGA card, which is a Diamond
Multimedia EDGE 3D 2000 series card with 2MB ram and
the STG2000 chipset. According to the XFree
documentation, this card is supporting by the SVGA
driver. Moreover, when I run the Mandrake Install CD
on my PC at work, I can get to the DrakX screen, so I
know my CD is good. So, is there anyone out there who
can help me? I have search the internet and
Mandrake's site, but to no success. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If you know the brand of your SCSI disk, perhaps at the website of the

parity errors sound like a nasty thing, perhaps the disk is not too
healthy and needs a low level format.

A quick look shows cheapbytes charges 6.99 for MDK 7.1 2 CD set, the $1.99
price is for MDK 7.0 single CD. Matt includes shipping in his price,
cheapbytes charges $5.00. If I hadn't already downloaded and burned my own

this got me confused... really confused.
it's so easy to configure this thing in Win95/98/NT/2000... when it comes to

checked almost every book there is, but it seems the writer are more
interested in successfully installed Linux with everything configured during
installation then after.
How do you configured a newly installed device in Linux i.e. Ethernet card,
MPEG card, etc.

Thanks!

I have the 3COM509B NIC, that functions perfectly in Linux and Windows. I
suggest writing down the exact I/O, IRQ (using whatever method you like to
retireve these #'s )from Windows and using those parameter's in Linux. If
the
card works in Windows, it will work in Linux (with the right I/O, IRQ).

  Dear Linuxers,

I'm using Linux Mandrake 7.0. I've installed it so many timer over just
to
get used to installation process. But I still could not overcome two
problems. I appreciate some assistance here.

  1. Ethernet Card
3Com 509b (combo) ISA using BNC cable.
  PnP mode disabled.
I couldn't get the card to work. Installation found it but after
  installation it is not functioning.
Booting process shows Eth0 initialisation failed.
  Lothar doesn't help much.
The card works fine under win98 and win2000.

  2. Display/Graphics Card
  S3 Savage3D AGP with 8MB on board.
I could not get it to it to the resolution I want i.e. 800x600 at 32bit
  color depth.
The monitor screen will go blank and the LED indicator on monitor shows
 that
no signal received from the card.
DrakConf offers no help as well.
The card works fine under win98 and win2000.
  Monitor is a 15" Likom L503BGD.

Thank you very much in advance for the help.

  Best Regards
  Joe

Re: [newbie] GAIM

Found it at the GAIM homepage...
http://www.marko.net/gaim/
It seems that if you didn't have config data stored with AOL, you got
the no config error we were discussing. 0.9.19 is supposed to solve
this. While I'll be happy to install from a tarball, I wonder how long
it'll take MandrakeSoft to get an updated RPM out the door. (Hear that,
MdkSoft? Your new users under 7.1 can't use GAIM until you give them an
update.)

I am using GAIM version 0.9.18-1 and I have it open right now
and an talking with my sister who is online with AOL.
Hopefully this is not something that will now affect this
version as well, and just hasn't gotten to mine yet.
That would be a real drag.

I am sorry, I saw a link on the Linux-Mandrake web site that specifically
addressed Nvidia TNT installation. I don't remember how I got to it. you
might go on an explore of the web site and see what you can find.
