funzia?

[newbie-it] shell-script

2002-06-28 Per discussione Emiliano La Licata

Cari ragazzi,

vengono i problemi!!
Le operazioni che devo fare presuppongono un dialogo con la shell e non
solo l'esecuzione di una serie di comandi. in questo caso come faccio a non
fare bloccare lo script.
Mi spiego meglio, le operazioni che devo fare sono:

su
scrivere password
rm /dev/usb/lp0
scrivere y
mknod /dev/usb/lp0 c 180 0
modprobe printer
cat /etc/printcap
editare printcap nel modo giusto
uscire da cat con control d

Come vedete devo dialogare con la shell in molti punti...

Quacuno sa come impostare uno shell-script con questi comandi??

Ciao e grazie

2002-06-28 Per discussione Roberto

Sarò ripetitivo ma...
vai sul sito della ibm (www.ibm.com) più precisamente
qui http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm
e scaricati Drive Fitness Test (version 3.01)
per windows o linux. Fai girare l'utility su una macchina funzionante e
questa creerà un floppy di boot.
Avvia la macchina rotta col floppy di boot e questa con tutta probabilità
riparerà il tuo hd ibm
Fammi sapere.
P.s.Scaricati anche i manuali in formato pdf.
Se non ti va di scaricarti il programma diimmelo che ti mando io il
dischetto di boot.
Ciao

Re: [newbie] Switching from Voodoo to GeForce2

2002-06-28 Per discussione D. Olson

Wow. I just did this last week on my wife's PC. Perfect timing.

Here's how.

1) Shut off PC.
2) Remove Voodoo.
3) Install GeForce.
4) Power up PC.
5) Log in, but don't do startx
6) su to root
7) run XFdrake so that it switches to the GeForce card.
8) Install the NVidia GLX drivers and configure them.
9) Now type exit to go back to your user
10) do startx and you're all set! No reboot needed.

If you don't know how to do step 8, have a look at http://mdkxp.by-a.com/ at
the tutorial section. You can memorize it or print it for reference. Download
the SRC RPMs to your home folder before you do step 1, unless you know how to
download from the commandline.

This worked perfectly for me.

[newbie] install WinME _after_ MDK

2002-06-28 Per discussione Raffaele Belardi

I need to install WinME on a disk with MDK8.2 already installed on it.

With diskdrake I created a 3Gbyte primary partition of type FAT32 (LBA)
on unpartitioned space of hda. The new partition is seen as hda3 in
linux and C: with DOS fdisk.

Then, booting from a WinME rescue disk I install WinME to C: from the
cdrom. When the system reboots, bios shows the message invalid I/O
device - remove disk and press key or something like that. I am still
able to boot linux with a linux boot disk.

Any hints? Has anybody ever installed WinXX after linux? I was prepared
to reinstalling LILO after WinME, but I don't understand why

thanks,

raffaele

Which version do you have?
You can set up 7.x from only the first CD.
For 8.x I think you need at least the first 2.
Do you have a CD-writer? You need to write the ISO file to a CD and boot
from that CD (or make a linux bootfloppy) in order to install things.

Just reinstall lilo and you're done! (use MDK installation cd - select rescue if i remind well). WinME doesn't care much about other OS and overwrites the boot loader

Re: [newbie] install WinME _after_ MDK

2002-06-28 Per discussione Raffaele Belardi

nope, the problem is that before that: when I try to install windows, it
copies its files to C:, then reboots, and at this point it does not find
the C: disk anymore (invalid I/O device...), so it cannot complete
installation.
My understanding is that win overwrites the linux MBR (and that is ok)
with its own MBR which is not able to see the C: - i.e. hda3 - partition
(and this is not ok)

any idea?

thanks,

raffaele

Reinstall LILO. You _might_ get windows to buy a boot from the boot
sector, but if you eer have it check partitions it will choke. It stops
as soon as it sees a non-windows partition.

But before you reinstall LILO make sure you add the win partition and
its boot--(Looks like this)

other=/dev/hda1
label=windows
table=/dev/hda

Since the table is read from hda (i.e. the boot sector's pointer table,)
it is unlikely for the behavior of windows to change. It won't boot
unless it is before all non-windows partitions.

I have managed to set several windows systems on a disk, but if I ever
changed one of the partitions to something like ext2, the ones followint
it in partition order would disappear. They'd still be there but could
not boot or use windows fdisk.

That's the sloppy way Microsoft programs, just assume there is nothing
else on the disk, and make it difficult if there is.
