[newbie] Email List server

2002-08-02 Per discussione Aaron Winters

What is involved in setting up a email list
server?I have a LM 8.2 machine that is a web/ftp server and I would like
to start an email discussion list. I do not have anything for mail running and I
don't think I even installed things like sendmail because I had no need for them
and did not want to worry about open ports I am not using so I will have to know
what software to install also. I don't really want to run an email server but I
need the list so help in getting it going and secure is what I am looking
for.
Thanks,

from the replies I got it does not seem to matter though it seems to be a
good idea to not use top level domain extensions like .com .net. I named
mine eol.lcl and it seems to be fine with it.

 Hi Aaron,

I would also like the same and if I could set up say a wacky domain name
for my Linux box that connects via its modem and a dynamic IP to the
internet. I mean could I call it for instance localhome.co.za? Does
anyone know what the RFC number is for me to go and look at regarding
 hostnames?

[newbie] Can not get users web site to come up with Apache and LM 8.1

2001-11-29 Per discussione Aaron Winters

Hey yall, I have a clean install of LM 8.1 and I
can not get my users web sites to come up. When you type the URL http://domainname.edu/~user I get an
error telling me I do not have permission to access it. I have done this before
and the only thing I can think of is that this time during the install I chose
medium instead of low on the security setting because this box is on the net all
the time with a static IP running Apache, ProFTPd and SSH. The domain web site
comes up fine it is just the users sites that are a problem. I have looked in
the httpd config files and it has entries that look to me like it should work
but what I know about configuring Apache is just enough to mess something up.
Can any of you give me a hand?

Well, in testing after I found it was not working with my personal login I
logged in with my test account created the public_html directory, started
Netscape Composer typed this is a test and saved it as index.html in my
public_html directory I just made. That has always been fine in the past.
Does setting the security level to medium change the default permissions to
where that will not work?

I think your problem may simply be permissions on the files and
directories where the pages are stored.
