[newbie] 9.0 problem with shorewall and internet connection sharing
I just got done installing 9.0 for my home network. Im running a simple home network. I am using a standard 10/100 nic for my network. I am using a Cisco PCI 350 aironet 802.11b card for my broadband internet connection. I use to run mandrake 8.2 with no problems. I did a clean install of 9.0 and have not been able to get internet sharing to work. Prior to configuring ics under network and internet settings in mandrake control center, I could access the internet on my 9.0 box. After configuring ics i loose all internet access. After fiddling with it for a while I noticed that when I enabled ics that shorewall is installed and that the gui interface for firewall under mandrake control center shows that all setting or ports are blocked. The funny thing about it is that when i disable all firewall settings under mandrake contol center my ics is now disabled. It does it on its own. I have tried many things and have not had any luck. I'm pretty much a newbie to linux so I have not tried to manually adjust anything yet. I thought I would look for some help first with the mailing list. Any help appreciated Thanks, Gary Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

It is set up for PNP and it configures itself for IRQ 05 and I/O 0x03e8. At boot up I noticed that when com 1,2,and 3 are configured, com 3 is set up for I/O 0x03e8 but with IRQ 04 I placed 'setserial /dev/modem port 0x03e8 irq 05 uart 16550a' in my /etc/rc.d/rc.local file. Works just fine. I was thinking about sending out an e-mail about this subject and if one could change the way linux configures the com ports at boot up, but after reading 'man setserial' all my questions were answered. Linux has a pretty step learning curve, but the more I get into it, the more I like it. What does accountname stand for? What should I put for accountname? Also, will this start kppp and dial into the internet when I complete a seti packet? [newbie] linux-mandrake 2.2.13-7mdk kernel
Can someone tell me the difference between the 2.2.13-7mdk kernel and the 2.2.13-7mdk smp kernel I am asking because I cannot compile a driver for the smp kernel for my SB live sound card. My linux box is set up with the smp kernel and the emu10k1.o driver is compiled for the 2.2.13-7mdk kernel. I downloaded the latest driver from creatives ftp site. When I modify the Makefile file to enable smpsupport and then "make" the driver, the process errors. Just wondering if anyone knew. Thanks, Gary
Re: [newbie] linux-mandrake 2.2.13-7mdk kernel
Thanks, but I got it fixed. I found out that smp is for multiple processor motherboards. Well I don't have one. After fixing that, installing the driver for the card went easy. Re: [newbie] smp kernel 2.2.13-7mdk and modules
Do you have a multi-processor motherboard? The smp kernel is for mult-processor systems. "Thanks M Thompson at Hot Mail" I had a problem with installing a driver for my sound card, I know this is completely different to your problem, because my linux box was using the smp kernel. After I did away with that and used the 2.2.13-7mdk kernel I did not have a problem. Later, Gary Warren Doney wrote: Hidong Kim wrote: Hi, Axalon, I tried the 'depmod -a', but the 2.2.13-7mdk smp kernel is still hanging during boot at "Finding module dependencies". Should it be 'depmod -a 2.2.13-7mdk' or 'depmod -a 2.2.13'? Thanks, move your old modules from (top level) /lib/modules to a new folder /lib/oldmodules (I just used KFM) or whatever before you make modules--lnstall--depmod etc. Before you reboot, put a working version of older kernel moudules in /lib/modules so you can boot with an older kernel if anything goes wrong. I.E. I made sure I had a bootdisk+modules for 2.2.13-7 before I rebooted my newly compiled 2.2.13-22. I don't think it would work with 2 lots of the same version e.g. 13-22 + 13-22 (havent tried it though). For me, depmod still spits out unresolved stuff, but I can boot o.k. off my new kernel. I think I hosed out some suff from the src tree when I did a make mrproper or a make clean somewhere, Wish I'd moved the RPM from /tmp Warren.
[newbie] kppp
This seems kinda wierd to me. After I connect to my dial up internet provider using kppp dial up utility, I cannot access anything on my system. Everything seems to now respond, but as soon as I disconnect, everything works. After I log out and shut down my computer, I notice that there are a lot of comments, I'm assuming that this deals with my problem, while linux shuts down. 'Audit: "A date and time stamp": 435x: client 22 rejected from local host' Any help, Thanks, Gary
