[newbie] Problem with chipset and V card
Friend of mine has a computer with an AMD II with the Via chipset on the motherboard. He installed ATI Xpert 2000 Pro 32MB AGP and the motherboard does not support this card. The instructions on the card say that you have to install the driver before the operating system. Is that possible?? The computer right now runs on Win98 and LM 7.1

[newbie] MBR
Hi all. A computer has two h/d . One is 13 GB and the other one 20GB I want to install Win ME (for my son's games), Win 2000 for my wife's work and Linux for Dad's games!!! I have two questions. Which is the order that I have to install the O/Ss so I can use LILO to boot. Is it true that ME needs to be at the first H/D ?? Please help!!
[newbie] Huge swap file!!!
I was installing LM 7.1 to a friends computer. During the installation process I created two Linux partitions. One Linux native (ext2), bootable, 2.2 GB and a Linux swap of 128 MB Installation finished OK. Because the H/D is shared with Win 98 I use System Commander to boot. System Commander detected a Swap Linux partition of 2.3 GB not bootable. I thought that I made a big mistake during the installation and to double check I used fdisk that confirmed the presence of only one Linux partition(non dos). So I did a new install deleting the partition with fdisk and creating again the same Linux partitions with the mandrake install. Yes you guessed right. Again one huge swap file and nothing else. System Commander and fdisk confirmed that so I used the rescue disk. It booted up to a point and then I got the message kernel panic no file system present or something similar. Can you please help?? This is the first time that I install Linux and I run into this kind of problem. All my other installations went fine and actually a month ago we did a LM7.0 install on that particular box. Any help will be appreciated.
[newbie] 7.2 Installation
Hi there. I have in my box both Win and Mandrake 7.1 at the same H/D. I want to install 7.2 and according to a lot of messages it is better to do a fresh install rather than upgrading. How do I go about this?? I start the installation of 7.2 select new install and when I get to the partition side I just select the existing partition and formate it?? Can you please refresh my memory???
[newbie] 2nd H/D
On top of my previous question about LM 7.2 install, there is a possibility that I will buy a second H/D . In that case I will use the entire H/D for Linus and the other one for Win. Is there any way I can reclaim the space that Linux used to be on H/D 1 and make it Fat 32 system without having a separate partition within windows, and without loosing any data from my Win partition??
[newbie] Fast CPU
Can you please point me at a site (independent) that I can compare the new fast CPUs (P4 1.4, Dual G4, Athlon) Yes I know G4 is a MAC. Which one do you think is best for Linux??? Thanks
Re: [newbie] Help! Trying to get a Voicemail system to work...
Well, you are the only person (other than me) to try a Voicemail program. I downloaded one from Fresh meat (I don't the name) and tried Kvoice but to no avail. The problem I had was exactly the same as you. I went to different sites including this list to get help but I got no answers. The closest answer to a solution was from McMillan's site ( Expert Exchange) that you have to make your own greeting as a WAV file and then use it. But I could never manage to import my message to the program. So I did what another expert advised: This is Linux and we do not bother with these kind of programs!!! Sorry I cannot help but finally I gave up on Voicemail programs. - Original Message - From: "BobC" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, November 30, 2000 9:14 PM Subject: [newbie] Help! Trying to get a Voicemail system to work... If anyone here has a clue how to get ANY voicemail program to work, please let me know. I've spent many, many hours trying to get kvoice to work, including OS reinstall to go from 7.2 back to 7.1. No luck with it. I did get it to record voicemails and save them, and play them back, but it won't play a greeting msg for all the time and money in the world. And now PMFax. Tried with it since I got up today. Asterisk wouldn't even compile. I only know of one more that isn't finished code (I lost the bookmark with the OS reinstall). If I can't even INSTALL a voicemail program, I can't imagine my odds in messing with one in an attempt to get it to run. The following is the email I sent the writers of PMFax: I've spent the past 12 hrs trying to get PMFax to work. I have a fresh version, downloaded today. I can't get it to play an announcement, nor does it save the voicemails reseived from what I can see. It does beep and seem like its recording a msg or trying to get a fax. I am running Linux Mandrake 7.1. Minicom is able to communicate with the Actiontec 56k voice/fax modem and it has a Rockwell Chipset. I also have a USR 56k Voice/Fax Ext PRO which doesn't work. Both are on com2: (I just swapped them) and using IRQ 3 and ttyS01 linked to /dev/modem. I have mgetty+sendfax installed, as well as vgetty. I tried removing this from the /etc/inittab and rebooting, but it didn't help. I also downloaded Regina 2.0 and installed it, thinking that maybe the scripts weren't executing at all because I didn't have the pgm. It didn't install in the path, so I copied the executable to /usr/bin. I also made all the .cmd files executable and am doing everything as root in an attempt to make sure security problems aren't causing it to not work. Can you please forward this to someone that knows how to install the product and make it work in hopes they might shed light on how I can get it operational? Thanks for any help, Bob Currey

[newbie] CDRW
Hi there. I will post this question for second time since my question at the first time was confusing. The story goes like this. I have a DVD (which was set up as cdrom1) and a CDRW (which was set up as cdrom2) I went to Mandrake's site and followed the instructions as to how to make the CDRW to work. Unfortunately I did not know that they have two set of instructions if you have two cdroms. Now what happened is that I lost both my cdroms. Whenever I put a CD I get the message that cannot open file on or cannot list contents. The command I gave following Mandrake's example was cd /dev rm cdrom ln -s scd0 cdrom Is there a way I can reverse the command (for example remove scd0 and create a link to my first cdrom) so I can get back my CDROM Any help will appreciated.

NetZip's "Download Demon" was purchased by Real Networks and renamed "Real Download". then Netscape/AOL licensed it from Real and called it "Netscape Smart Download." By watching the "packet traffic" flowing out of one of my machines while downloading a file through the Internet, I verified the rumors which you may have heard regarding these programs: All of these programs immediately tag your computer with a unique ID, after which EVERY SINGLE FILE you download from ANYWHERE on the Internet (even places that might not be anyone else's business) is immediately reported back to the program's source, along with your machine's unique ID *and* its unique Internet IP address. This information allows them to compile and create a detailed "profile" about who you are based upon the web sites you visit and the files you have downloaded. Perhaps you don't mind being watched and tracked as you move around the Internet ... and having every file you download reported along with your unique ID and IP address. But the idea of this being done WIHTOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE, seems invasive to me in the extreme. And even if you carefully read the program's license, you might not be aware that this is going on or that "you agreed to it" when you accepted their terms! More than 14 Million people are already using the original NetZip Download Demon. NetZip knows the exact number, since every copy of their program "phones home" to report on what their users are doing! And I'm sure people are downloading Real Network's ReadDownload and Netscape's SmartDownload like crazy. A Class Action lawsuit was recently filed against Netscape/AOL because of this privacy invasion, so perhaps the PC industry will begin to receive the message that this sort of secret spying and profiling is not okay with the rest of us, even if it is buried within a lengthy license agreement. You decide. And, of course, the next release of my own OptOut spyware detection and removal utility WILL consider these programs to be dangerous, and warn its users of their presence in their systems. But I wanted to be sure that you knew RIGHT AWAY what was going on, and that I had independently confirmed that this invasive file download and trackability really was occurring. If you have the boot utility disk (you should have made it installing system commander ) just boot from the floppy. This will tell SC the computer's new configuration and SC will be reset. This way you will see if there is any problem with LILO or GRUB and if the partitions are bootable. On Wed, 07 Jun 2000, also sprach: I just downloaded the new 7.1 and installed on my computer on the second hard drive. Then I configured a 256MB Linux Swap. I'm also running System Commander 2000 as a boot manager. I installed 7.1 in expert mode and installed it to the first partition on the second hard drive. I set the LILO to boot from that partition. I also tried to do the same install only usiong GRUB in the same configuration. When I boot up into System Commander and choose the mandrake Linux to boot I get the first letter of LILO L then a constant stream of 01space01space and it just continues. I have to reset the machine to get out of it. Anyone have any idea what is happening. I'm assuming it is a bad LILO install, but I reinstalled three times. Please Help... I tried all the possible protocols for the mouse but no solution. Then I run Xconfigurator. When I set everything up I and typed startx I had the same problem so Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill the server ( which was insisting of turning the monitor on and off ) and then I got the message Fixed Font missing. No default unix/: -1 So I tried to open /etc/X11/XF86Config and set the font path to the above default but I got the message that access was denied.( I was logged as root) Now I am really stuck. Re: [newbie] Installing Quake III on a Linux machine
First you must have 3dfx Glide drivers. Then if your download was rpm open a shell and type: rpm -i q3test-linux-1.07-glibc-4.i386.rpm ( or whatever rpm you have) This will copy the files to the default location of /usr/local/games/q3 You can specify ypur own directory by using the --root=/ your/dir/choice with the rpm command. Now you can start Quake ./linuxquake3 +set r_g1Driver libMesaVoodooGL.so3.1 from the q3 directory. You might want to put this command on a shell script to save yourself some typing.
