Okay, so you have a dsp device and also a dsp1 device. Possible that dsp1 is
the SB16 and that dsp is the mainboard sound. So, do a ls -l /dev/dsp and if
the link is pointing to dsp, then you might want to relink it to dsp1 and
then see if you can hear sound. If you can, then we know that is what the
problem is and we just have to make sure that harddrake is not overwriting
the link to the device each time you are rebooting.

note that cards like for instance SB Live! has two dsp devices (mine for example /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp1).

seems that resound doesn't like what gramofile has created.

Since I haven't yet figured out how to get rezound to create .wav files

gramofile created so that I can manipulate them in rezound. The short
bit of .wav that resound has accepted plays badly, very garbled, rough,
as though half the audio stream has been clipped away.

Is there anything I can do about it , does anyone have the experience to

[newbie] cannot connect after winroute upgrade

2003-10-29 Per discussione Jozef Riha
please help me cause my ISP is not able to help me.

i am connecting to the internet through wireless card (z-com xi 626). everything was
working perfectly until the day my ISP did upgrade of his network sw - winroute. win32
clients can still connect to his server flawlessly, this does not apply to my linux

i watched the net behaviour and here is what i got:
- right after boot process is finished (i turned off starting of dhcp client on boot)
ifconfig -a command displays the information about two network devices (eth0 and lo -
eth0 has zero values at all RX/TX items)
- i type ifup eth0 and using watch ifconfig -a command watch the changes:
* TX:1 RX:4
* TX:4 RX:2
* TX:10 RX:2
..
* TX:40 RX:5
then errors and dropped packets appear
* TX:42 RX:5 RX errors: 268
RX dropped packets and RX errors start to increase quickly (RX dropped = RX errors)

the new network device is created: eth0:9 with the same HW address as eth0 and with
the following parameters:
inetadr: 127.255.255.255 vsesmer: 127.255.255.255 mask: 255.0.0.0

ifup eth0 command terminates with stdout: /sbin/ifup: line 433: 3012 Hangup
/etc/init.d/tmdns reload /dev/null 21

i tried to connect with SuSE live CD (8.1) - unsuccessfully. ifconfig -a output:

[newbie] how to load module for audigy first

problem is that most programs thinks that /dev/dsp is the place they should send sound output and /dev/dsp is actually
microphone in the webcam (audigy card is /dev/dsp1 and /dev/dsp2 - i don't now why it has double-entry)

I heard that by default mdk 9.1 installation does not change the

I choose the option upgrade when installing? I really want to know -
how you experts upgrade? ( I am sure you have done much more than me on

Thanks,

Not an expert, but I have installed 9.1 over 9.0 twice as an upgrade
(one yesterday, and one today) and twice as a fresh install (both
today). I usually prefer to do a fresh install, leaving my /home
partition intact, but upgrading didn't touch it during any of these
installs. My settings were preserved for all applications.

FWIW, the first install (work computer, upgrade 9.0 to 9.1) went well.
The only issues were losing network settings, and having to run drakconf
after the install to get X to start. (Screen resolution) Other than
that, it's exactly like it was before, but with newer stuff.
My home machine was another story. After one upgrade attempt and two
fresh installs, I'm back to 9.0.
do u have an idea where the problem with your home machine was?? i also
intent to upgrade my desktop machine and you scaried me a bit..

OK, change the owner:group of the files to root:root
and set permissions to 775 ..
( chown root:root files;
 chmod +775 files)

have to make a script that will change the contents of .kde everytime
kde is started?
Better yet, it would be nice to find the script that does this in the
first place, and kill the bastard.
changing the permissions helped but i won't give up that easily and
still tryig to find out WHERE is that damned script..

i did the following steps:

1. deleted everything from ~/.kde/share/applnk-mdk
2. restarted kde
3. seems good. link to openoffice writer (with terrible
windowmanager_section icon) is gone
4. so i ran rpmdrake-remove and removed some gnomegames
5. restarted kde
6. ooops. the ~/.kde/share/applnk-mdk structure is recreated (does not
bother that much) but so is the ooo writer link (well, actually this
really sucks)
7. find / -name Open*.desktop didn't help. i found nothing realated to
this issue under /usr/share/applnk-mdk so please can anybody tell me how
this link can be recreated??

===the contents of OpenOffice\ Writer.desktop:===

Name=OpenOffice Writer

Things like these are the ones people refer to when they say
KDE is unpredictable.

Damian

Of course if you have security set above standard it could be msec
that
is changing the file back. Where do you have security set? HTH

sorry, i cannot remember.. where can i find out?

 ... mmm... dunno.. maybe mandrake control center - security can give you
 a hint. If you use your PC as a workstation, then regular (medium)
security
 is OK and recommended.

[newbie] crashing konqueror (in kde 3.1 - texstar)

2003-03-09 Per discussione Jozef Riha
hello,
i upgraded kde 3.0.5a to 3.1 from rpm by TexStart. everything is fine
except the fact that konqueror is crashing with sigsev 11 more than
often (sometimes right after executing, always after clicking on Home
button).
thanks for help.
cheers,

well, i had the same problem few minutes ago and i did it!! i am sorry,
but really cannot tell you how but suddenly it just worked. i played
with Control Center a lot - that's all i can tell. try allow desktop

I'm sorry if this was dealt with when KDE 3.1 came out, but after
trawling through the archives for a while, I haven't found anything.
(That reminds me to plead once again for people to start a new thread
when the topic changes - it's a minor irritation when I'm reading my
mail, but a major PITA when searching the archives.)

I've just installed KDE 3.1 from Texstar's RPMs. Most everything works
OK, except that I have no icons and my wallpapers don't show up. It
looks almost like the background is appearing on top of the desktop.
Even if I delete .kde and start from scratch, I can't get icons by
dragging from the menu, and right-clicking the desktop does nothing. Is
there something different about KDE 3.1 I should know about, or
something else I should have installed (or alternately, uninstalled)?

Sir Robin
(who foolishly upgraded KDE just before noticing that Mdk 9.1 is due out
soon)

addon:

executing konq as: konqueror --profile webbrowsing fires it up at
least. only konqueror command crashes konqi right after showing the
main window.

this is console output when running konqueror as a new user (username is

Re: [newbie] kde rewrites .desktop files

2003-02-28 Per discussione Jozef Riha
thanks for help, i'll try your advise. is this a bug or a feature?

i also noticed that kde (i guess) replaces my own menu structure
(defined in ~/.kde) with the system one (/usr/share/applnk-mdk) when i
remove package with rpmdrake-remove. i will check out whether
permissions-change solves this problem too.

thanks again.

cheers,
joe

I've seen that happen a lot of times. Make your icon items
the way you like them, and make them read-only. (Remove
your write permission)

[newbie] suggestion to mdk developers

2003-02-17 Per discussione Jozef Riha
when i click on removable media icon selecting unmount or eject but the
media is still in use and it cannot be unmounted/ejected the new window
apears with information about Device in use. that's just fine but there
should be like /sbin/fuser -v /dev/scd0 and it should list processes
which are bothering cdrom or it could even give an option to kill
these process(es).

many times mdk-newbie doesn't have a clue about fuser program and would
simply like to get the cd out of the drive. maybe this is more windows
like approach, but what's bad about it??

please, write what you think about this and eventually how to let mdk
developers know.

thanks. cheers,
