[newbie] wireless connection

2003-08-24 Per discussione MG
Hello all,
was wondering if anybody has any ideas on this...
I'm trying to get a wireless connection to another house near mine.
I have a dial up account and my neighbor has a broadband business
account and would allow me to use it. I currently use Smoothwall as a
gateway-firewall but I'm going to have to install a desktop pci wireless
card with an external antenna and Smoothwall doesnt have wireless
support for cards. Is there any gateway-firewalls out there that support this.

Wish list:
 Easy configuration and adminitration ( I'm a newbie :-)
 Free (very low budjet)

I should also say we both run linux (MDK)

Mike

Not sure if this is what you are talking about but, I boot to run level3 and
use this little session selector. I like it better than kdm or gdm.
Its on the MDK8.2 cd's not sure about later versions.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] mike]$ Xtart

  WELCOME to Sessions Selector

1 KDE
2 gnome
3 WindowMaker
4 Enlightenment
5 blackbox
6 XFce
7 IceWM
8 Sawfish

Which do you choose? (number)

Now someone posted about doing this in Gnome. Isn't there an easier
way? How about KDE? Or doing this on E itself?

 Ideas...?

Originally I wanted to explore most of the wm's easily and Xtart was

In Blackbox if you right click desktop session windowmanagers exit

Re: [newbie] trouble with sis900 onboard ethernet

2003-02-26 Per discussione MG
Hi Richard,
I have the same board k7s5a with onboard sound and network.
I have MDK8.2 installed and it configured my nic on install but I had
troubles with sound. Thanks! to your link I'm going to attempt to get my
sound working again. Anyways I'm a newbie so can't help much but heres some
info from my system. Also all I have in my /etc/modules is the same as you
scsi_hostadapter, but did notice the nic was in my /etc/modules.conf as below
shows.I did notice that the HOWTO's and mine were IRQ 5 and your dmesg say's
IRQ 11 I'm not sure if that makes a difference as long as there is not a
conflict somewhere.

   (This is from dmesg)
is900.c: v1.08.02 11/30/2001
PCI: Assigned IRQ 5 for device 00:03.0
eth0: Realtek RTL8201 PHY transceiver found at address 1.
eth0: Using transceiver found at address 1 as default
eth0: SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet at 0xdc00, IRQ 5, 00:07:95:27:f8:d4.
(Further down in dmesg)
eth0: Media Link On 10mbps half-duplex
(This is what Harddrake shows)
Vendor: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]
Model: SiS900 10/100 Ethernet
Kernel Module: sis900
Bus Type: PCI
(This is what ethtool shows)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mike]# ethtool -i eth0
driver: sis900
version: v1.08.02 11/30/2001
firmware-version:
bus-info: 00:03.0
(This is what is in my /etc/modules.config)
alias eth0 sis900

 Greetings,
I am trying to get my SiS900 10/100 onboard ethernet to work with ML 9.0. I
 came across a howto at
 http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/K7s5a-HOWTO and typed 'dmesg |
less' as they suggested. I get three lines for eth0 as follows:
eth0: Unknown PHY transceiver found at address 1.
eth0: Using transceiver found at address 1 as default
 eth0: SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet at 0xdc00, IRQ 11, 00:0a:e6:4d:21:62

My question is this. If the PHY transceiver is unknown (I assume this is
the network chip) then how can ML identify it two lines later? The howto
also states that I can add sis900.o to etc/modules if everything goes ok.
When I look at etc/modules the only item in there is scsi_hostadapter.

I suppose the short question is really do I have a good chip on this mb or
 not?

[newbie] small linux (might? of lost $10.)

2003-02-01 Per discussione MG
Hello all,
I picked up an old toshiba notebook at a goodwill store
12mhz cpu, 1mb ram, 32mb or 40? harddrive. Actually works
screen has some small vertical lines and I think cmos batt weak.
Has dos 3.x on it and it has a floppy drive3.5.

Anyways I was looking around for a small linix to put on it.
Any recommendations?
It is purely a learning experience for me not really going to do
anything with it.

Thanks for the responses.
After reading a little bit I'm beginning to see what you mean,
The processor and especially the ram (which I know I wont be able to
upgrade) as Simon pointed out, are big issues.
Although the ELKS link makes interesting reading.
I'll poke around with it for a while, I can always donate it back for
for somebody else to play with :-)

For real linux you need at least a 386 processor, and those were made in
 the 20Mhz and up range.

 BUT

 download the file images-0.1.0.zip
 unzip it
 copy to floppy
 and try it out

Re: [newbie] Geforce Driver

2003-01-25 Per discussione MG
safest bet is the IA32, thats what I used on my system which is a Athlon 1.5
XP, but view the readme first before downloading, I think the differences are
32bit and 64 bit processors but not sure. I am a newbie my self. The readme
was not to hard to follow for me, and I dont follow so good! LOL

(IA32=pentium[mmx,ll.lll.lV],athlon)
(IA64=Itanium or Itanium II processors)
(AMD64=AMD's Hammer chips)
version: 1.0-4191
release:12/11/2002

I used the src rpms because wasn't all that sure which rpm to use I'm running
MDK8.2 on a Athlon 1.5 on an ECS board with a Geforce4 agp.

I pretty much followed the Readme at:
http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-4191/README
on building and installing the kernel and glx drivers,
then editing the XF86Config or on my system XF86Config-4 file.
also instructions on useing tar also.
I did all in console with the X server not running as they instructed
and worked out nice.
A forum to check also is:

 Hi All,

think I may need a little help before I totally foul things up.

I assume I need the AMD64 driver (AMD Athalon 1ghz)
 Do I need both:
   GLX Tar File
   Kermel Mode Tar File

How do I know which version of XFree I am running? (MD 9.0 with all
 updates)

Re: [newbie] Phoenix 0.5

2003-01-05 Per discussione MG
Not sure if this is the problem or not but they mentioned in the release
notes not to install on an exsiting directory or a mozilla directory.
I put mine in /usr/lib/phoenix and mozilla in /usr/lib/mozilla

I just tried to run Mozilla (from the desktop, user command line, root, and

Phoenix has its own set of directories. Its as if the mozilla executable
 was replaced by Phoenix.
I know that Phoenix uses the mozilla engine.
Is there something that I am missing here?

[newbie] eth0 config

2003-01-04 Per discussione MG
Hello all,
I installed a command line tool called ethtool I was curious about what
speed my nic was set at, its an onboard device SIS900 and I'm not sure where
the configuration file is at.
Anyways when I run the command ethtool eth0 it says...

[root@avatar mike]# ethtool eth0
Settings for eth0:
No data available

but it shows me driver info...

[root@avatar mike]# ethtool -i eth0
driver: sis900
version: v1.08.02 11/30/2001
firmware-version:
bus-info: 00:03.0

I'm set up with my workstation connected to a hub which is connected to a
firewall/gateway box which is connected to a modem.
My hub I believe does 10mps, I picked up a used switch linskys 10/100mps
I have 10/100 nics in both boxs. I would like to see the difference it makes,
and learn about it. Like to be able to change and measure settings.

Questions= Where in MDK is eth0 settings at?
 Has anyone used ethtool ?
or is there a better tool?

Mike

Re: [newbie] script help

Hey Mark,
I was just using ./HW
as in:
[mike@avatar mike]$ ./HW
What I gathered was if the script was in a directory, that was in my PATH, I
could just use the name of the script instead of the whole path.
I looked in my /home/mike/.bash_profile file and it said:

[mike@avatar mike]$ cat .bash_profile
# .bash_profile

# Get the aliases and functions
if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then
. ~/.bashrc
fi

# User specific environment and startup programs

PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin

Perhaps /home/mike/bin is not in the path of PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin ?

 Mike,

When you call it from anywhere else except the directory where it's
located how are you calling it? for instance...if yo're in /home/mike
and you want to call the script you would call it this way:

   bin/practice_script/HW [enter]

Is this how you're doing it?

Thanks Chuck!
It works, I believe I understand now, thats why I got a
No such file or directory
it could not see it in the folder I made.
again appreciate the guidance.

Here's the rub, by type ./HW you are telling bash to run it in the
current directory. Also, path's are NOT recursive, so when you put it
inside a second folder inside the ~/bin directory, it will not see it.
Put the HW script directly into your ~/bin directory, then then type
 just HW (NOT ./HW)
