The last time I tried to do that I just got bad disks and actually had to go out and pay money for an OS. I may even have to give up on linux altogether. No sound, crappy video, no opengl support. Can you say SIS Chipset? I'm just about ready to give up on Mandrake. First time it agressively overwrote a windows dist, and this upgrade joke is even worse. For you, go RED HAT 7.2, as I have experience getting that working on a SIS board with all built-in SIS stuff. The only thing not working is accellerated video. My 8.0 to 8.1 upgrade lost half my prefs, now tries to mount a floppy twice upon bootup, and renamed all my groups from 'users' to numbers, which causes an error every time I bring up a terminal. Has *anybody* had ANY luck with this supposed upgrade? 30-35 packages failed to 'upgrade' without any explanation why, all on disk2. Yesterday I had a perfectly functioning M8.0 dist, with working Xv and Xine, today I have a crap M8.1 dist with holes, and Xine won't even run in Xv mode. However, I have only ever really come across this with the typematic keys pressed, and SHIFT is not normally a typematic key. Perhaps you have a strange config, or keyboard, which has enabled the SHIFT key as typematic? Totally correct, as do the rates that you describe, except it's kBps on both. My cable, and I'll just go out on a limb and guess you have cable, is nearly exactly that rate down, but only 35KB/s up, and I hate it. I got work to do :) Good luck, pass back a success story! Assuming that you're trying to install a Cooker package, this problem would be because Cooker uses GLIBC 2.2.3, whereas Mandrake 8.0 uses 2.2.2. You have several options here: Correct. 1. You can upgrade your GLIBC. The best way to do this would be to install Mandrake Freq3. 2. Better yet, wait for Mandrake 8.1, which is due early next week. 3. Compile PAN from source. You can get the Cooker SRPM and issue a rpm --rebuild to it. 4. Get a binary package from elsewhere (e.g. Red Hat or Ximian packages). 5. Install Ximian GNOME. I took option 5, because I am a GNOME user as well. I've been looking at it, but I think I'll take option 2 and hope that the upgrade scheme works better than it does in 8.0, which takes a long time to determine what's installed, and then tells me nothing is. I've been loathe to start over with 8.0 this week, had work to do. Thanks for the options. BTW: What's Freq3? Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

SAMBA is the key to all this, and probably worthwhile to join that mailinglist as the instructions probably go beyond the scope here. If you go it alone, here's a good troubleshooter: http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/samba.htm I've got Samba happily connecting 98/95 and linux, and although it's a bit more processor intensive than the nfs connection between the linux computers, it does provide xfer speeds in excess of 500KB/s on a 10BT net.
