Don;t know witch distro you running but on 7.2 there is VNC woks just like
pcanywhere and somewhere you will find the windows executable to.
file:/usr/share/doc/vnc-doc-3.3.3/index.html
This will be the path in 7.2 for all the info you will need.

Hope it helps

 Something like PCanywhere.
I dont want to use X as I'm a newbie and want to practice the command in

 Anybody got any ideas?

 ¶ê§Î¹ÏDear :

I have used linux on Redhat6.2 and 7.0 for a while.
But I am new to use Mandrake 8.0, I am happy to use Mandrake 8.0.

 I have tried successfully installed mysql-3.23.36 + openssl-0.9.6 +
 mod_ssl-2.8.1-1.3.19 + php4.0.4pl1 on Redhat 6.2

But I got some errors when applying those on Mandrake8.0.

Here is the installation steps and the messages on Mandrake:

  # (1) install mysql, suppose now on the mysql path
   ./configure
   make
   make install
   scripts/mysql_install_db
   /usr/local/share/mysql/mysql.server start
  # It works, and I can use Mysql database

 # (2) install openssl, suppose now on the openssl path
  sh config \
  -fPIC \
  no-idea
  make
  make test
  # It works

 # (3) install modssl, suppose now on the modssl path
   ./configure \
   --with-apache=../apache_1.3.19 \
   --with-crt=...
   --with-key=...
   # It works

 # (4) install apache, suppose now on the apache path
SSL_BASE=../openssl-0.9.6 \
./configure \
--prefix=/usr/local/apache \
--enable-module=most \
--enable-shared=max \
--enable-module=ssl \
--enable-shared=ssl
 make

The screen shows that I got some errors
/usr/local/apache_1.3.19/src/modules/standard/mod_auth_dbm.c:85:22:
db1/ndbm.h : No such file or directory

I found that when I installed Mandrake 8.0, it doesn't create the directory
/usr/include/db1, so it gets an error while trying to read
/usr/include/db1/ndbm.h file. So, I think it probably an error on Mandrake
 8.0.
However, as I remove the line --enable-module=most \ , that is:

 --prefix=/usr/local/apache \
 --enable-shared=max \
 --enable-module=ssl \
 --enable-shared=ssl
 make
 make install

It all works, and I can successfully configure php later, but I can not
#load additional module on apache, such as gd or zlib etc.. So I think I
 cannot comment out --enable-module=most

 Thanks in advance.

Try booting into it with a lesser amount of ram and then ad one of the

BTW if you have a ramdisk problem try another cdrom it worked for me!
Just be carefull of dvdrom as they sometimes give problems.

Now also use hdparm to enhance your disk performance just make sure you
do have the hdparm that is correct for your kernel and that you do not
have autotune in lilo when you boot that specific kernel.
Also look at your dma and UDMA options in your 2.4.* kernels they make
a huge difference

[newbie] mdk7.2 kernel 2.4.3

2001-04-09 Per discussione Stefaans Mostert

Hi all

Well I did it and for someone as new to linux as me I am positively
beeming ;-)

And for all the others who had a problem out there this is what you do

1 # cd /usr/src
2 #rm linux (it is a symbolic link pointing at the current kernel)
3 #tar -xvzf linux-blah.tar.gz
4 #mv linux linux-2.4.3
5 #ln -s linux-2.4.3 linux
6 #ln /usr/src/linux/include/linux /usr/include (mandrake does not put
this in by itself)
7 #cd linux
8 #make menuconfig (or what you prefer)
9 #make dep;make clean;make baImage;make modules;make modules_install
10 when this is finished prepare your /boot first
11 #cd /boot/
12 #rm System.map
13 mv /usr/src/linux/System.map /boot/System.map-2.4.3-1
14 #ln -s System.map-2.4.3-1 System.map
15 #mv /isr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.3-1
16 #ln -s vmlinuz-2.4.3-1 vmlinuz-2
17now comes the important part you must tell the kernel where you put
the modules of the new kernel so edit /etc/modules.conf to look exactly
and I mean EXACTLY like mine

Try booting into it with a lesser amount of ram and then ad one of the
2.4 series kernels and compile it with big mem support and some of the
other goodies in there.
Then put you extra ram in and boot it should work and if it does not
pick up all your ram ad the following line to lilo.conf
append "mem=1536000" hope that is right just check it ;-)

If it doesn't work mail us again or get me off list. You will not believe
what the new kernels do with a dual processor machine.
It is WOW !!!
In my experience the 2.4.3 kernel works the best on MDK 7.2
just make sure you upgrade your glibc (compile yourself)
reiser utils and modutils, and hdparm it is all covered in the HOWTO'S

Anyway have fun and let us know what the outcome is

Also all my mo-bo's at home are ASUS, and they have a good contract with
ATI and they just intergrate it. Almost as if they just sent you the

So check the card's web site. They may provide Linux drivers. But you
may consider going to a local computer store and buying an "old" ATI

they do have a web page that you could order from, they have pretty good

Mandrake 7.2, Redhat 7.0, or SuSE 7.0. In the near future, it will

Go with Mandrake 7.2. It has great hardware support out of the box and
it is very easy to configure and use.

  {
  AMD 1.1 GHz CPU
MSI K7T Pro 2A Motherboard with onboard AC97 sound

I personally am a real fan of the Abit KT7 (about $A280). Don't worry
about putting a UATA-100 hard drive on a UATA-66 motherboard, since
the bandwidth above 66MB/s is almost never used (only for the
occasional burst read). If you have a bit more money, go for the Abit
KT7 RAID (which does have UATA-100 support). Integrated solutions are
usually not a good idea, especially for Linux. For sound, get a Sound
Blaster Live! Value (which is great value for the sound quality you
get with it). If sound is not important then maybe a Sound Blaster
 Vibra PCI128 is for you.

  256MB SDRAM PC133

If you use both Linux and Windows (via VMware) heavily (e.g. run
memory-hungry apps) at the same time, you should probably get more RAM
than this. One of the best (and cheapest) ways to keep a machine fast
is to eliminate its need for swap (although you should always have
swap in place, just in case). I use VMware Workstation on my Linux box
with 256MB of RAM and my machine slows down after a little while since
both running OSs start using their swaps.

Quantum Atlantis AS 30GB E-IDE HDD ATA 100MB/sec (7200 rpm)
  2MB buffer
  or
IBM Desktar 30GB IDE HDD ATA/100 (7200 rpm) 2MB buffer

While both drives are good, the IBM is a bit better. Why not get a
bigger drive? My friend just bought a new computer a week ago with a
46GB IBM Deskstar. I can't remember the exact price, but it didn't
cost much more than the 30GB version. He got his computer from Forte
 Computers (http://www.fortecomputers.com.au/ - They're in Sydney).

32MB Riva TNT2 AGP Graphics Card

Why get a TNT2 when you can get a GeForce 2 MX for about $A200? Even
if you don't play games you will benefit from the extra speed of the
card. If you do play games then a GeForce 2 GTS doesn't really cost
 that much more.

  Panasonic 1.44MB Floppy Disk Drive
  Pioneer 16X DVD-ROM Drive

 Very good DVD drive :-)

  Sony Internal SCSI CD-RW (12x8x32)

 Very nice.

Tekram DC315U PCI SCSI Controller Card

 Great.

ATX Medium Tower Case with 300w Power Supply

Make sure the case is good for ventilation and upgrading (good layout,
lots of space inside, etc.). You may want a good CPU cooler, like the
Chrome Orb (about $A50, which is $20-$30 more than a standard
 fan/heatsink combo).

  Standard PS/2 Keyboard
  Genius PS/2 Scroll Mouse

  and probably a Philips 17 inch Monitor (107E) or a Samsung 17
  inch Monitor

19 inch monitors are not too expensive these days. If you can afford
it, get a Hitachi 19 inch flat screen. It's a steal at about $A850.
Forte sell ordinary 19 inch Hitachi monitors (i.e. not flat screen)
for $A740). Remember that the monitor is the part of the computer that
you look at, so make sure that you're looking at something pleasant
(that doesn't give you a headache after a while!).

  }

I imagine the main problems will be the onboard AC97 sound and the
hard drive with ATA/100. i have noticed some discussion regarding
hard drives with ATA/100, and I am under the impression that the
latest stable kernel does not support hard drives with ATA/100. Is
this correct? If so, what exactly do I have to do to make the
kernel work with ATA/100 without waiting for 2.4 kernel to come as
  part of a distribution.

The problem is not the hard drive, it is with the UATA-100 controller
on the motherboard. You can plug in an UATA-100 drive into a UATA-66
socket with no problems at all (my friend's new computer is like
that). Besides compiling a 2.4 kernel for yourself, I hear there is a
bootup option that allows you to run UATA-100 drives and controllers.
 I can't quite remember it, though :-(

Regarding the onboard sound, how much hacking will I need to do to
get it work, or should I just get the Creative Vibra PCI128 Sound
  Card?

Go with a real sound card. See my comments above regarding this.

I apologize if this has been extensively discussed before. Due to
time constraint, I don't always follow every topic in the discussion
  group.

  Thanks All.

Look for piranah
It is cool clustering software where you can set it up for load
bearing(sharing the load if traffic is high) or high availabillity (one
takes over from the other when it goes off line)
It is configured with your browser and is verey cool.
You will need a controller node though.

If it is in your home directory su to root
and type chmod -R 777 nsmail
A quick hack that works but is not the most secure.

Dear All, I purchased vmware not too long ago and finally got the nerve
up to begin installing it. After I opened the rpm of vmware 2.00
everything on my screen froze. I waited and waited then finally tried
 control-alt-backspace, control-alt-delete, and control-alt-esc. Nothing
worked so I had to push my reset button. That crashed my Linux and I
could not get into X anymore. I tried rescue and that did not work.

I had to reinstall Linux. I did it as an expert and used upgrade which
worked very well. By the way I, I have Linux Mandrake 7.2. This was the
first time that I installed as an expert and from now on I will do it
 that way if needed.

My question is: If everything freezes in that manner is there a way to
get to a console screen? None of my control keys worked and the
control-alt-F3 did not work. This has happened before many times and I
ended up reinstalling many times before. That is fine except I am tired
of losing my emails and signing up for Netscape over and over again. Any
help will be appreciated. Thank you. Marcia
Sounds like a dud video card.
what happenes is x crashes but it shoulden't take anything with it.
Try running Xconfigurator and set your resolution lower and when you
install anything from rpm use the command line.
rpm -Uvh your rpm
My gues is it is a SIS video card let me know if I am right

Anyway, things didn't go well. X crashed and "something" happened that ate up
ALL the remaining available space on my /home partition. I've checked and
rechecked and checked again and for the life of me I can't find or figure out
what in the world is going on or what is being written to that is causeing
this. It's very bizzare. What in the world could have happened and what can I
do to regain the space on my HDD? Before this happened the partition was only
at 26% used. It is now at 86% and that is after I got rid of a bunch of junk
 files that I know I didn't need.

ext2 bug
It doesn't resize well.
So a directory will bloat gut not beacome small again!
So copy all your files from /home/yourhome i.e cp /home/yourhome/*
/bakup
I create a directory in / called backup (mkdir /backup)
now recreate all your directories in home and selectively copy the files
back
Plz let me know how it went
Just remember to delete /backup afterwards or /partition will run uot of
space!!!

I am not even sure if it is possible to kick a netscape to a running
Xwindow system from inside cron. Let;s try it...

(And yes, folks, it is Xwindow. Not Xwindows. ;-)

Why do you need this? Note that some versions of netscape do not like it
when you run several instances next to each other (pre 4.7x for instance)
 from command lines.

Okay, I checked it by adding

 01 20 * * * netscape

to my crontable. It did not work. I could see it tried to do something,
but it could not connect to the Xserver. So cron is not the way to go.
(Cron sent me a mail that it could not open the display, too.)

You could think of a script that checks date and or time, which runs in a
minimized xterm, and runs netscape at certain moments.

I would not know exactly how to set that up all that fast. Perhaps you can
find some useful tool at www.linuxapps.com or www.freshmeat.net

 Good luck!

well, the site was o good. it had everything but the mdk

the guys who are helping me, I'm really apreciating. [[]]

Guysthe chances of Sousa's and Mark's systems having the
same partition as root are probably pretty low, so Sousa may
need to specify at boot time which hard disk partition is his
system's root partition using this syntax at the boot prompt:

 boot: linux root=/dev/hdaX

where X is the partition number of the root partition.

 parition. I tried:

 mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows

and I got the error message:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda1 or too many

I don't have very many mounted file systems (3 or 4). So I am not sure why
 it is giving me
that message. I am running windows 2000 on the other partition. I ran a
 program called
diskdrake (comes with mandrake) to look at the different partitions. It
 had labeled the
windows partition as other, and not as fat. I tried to use diskdrake to
 set a mount point
on the windows 2000 partition and it gave a page of error messages. Is
 there a manual
(ie I type in the commands) of setting up mount points?

 Thank you in advance,
 Sincerely,

Re: [newbie] Locked out at the LOGIN :

2000-12-21 Per discussione Stefaans Mostert

Type your user name and password.
When it gives you a bash prompt type "startx" without inverted commas
And whallah!! bob's your uncle!
This will bring up your xwindows.

Now how to get it back every time!!!
open a shell prompt (that funny screen icon in your task bar)
now type "su"
now give it your root(adminestrator) password
now type "pico /etc/inittab/"
in the editor window there will be a line that says "id:3:initdefault:"
change the 3 to a 5
now your line says id:5:initdefault
Type ctrl-x , enter and enter

What did you do?
You edited the /etc/inittab/ file (with pico)
and set the default runlevel to 5 (above the line you changed was a nice
explenation)
now when you hit ctrl alt backspace (killing x)
it will respawn (not die but restart)

Hope you have fun!!

Cheers from sunny South-Africa
