Re: [newbie] Nvidia Drivers, what's reccomended

2001-05-30 Per discussione hellmut

Hi!

I have a K6-2, 450 mhz, 256 megs ram and an ELSA Erazor III Pro videocard (TNT 2
chip). I also installed the RPM's for Mandrake 8 and it runs very well, only one
time the X-server lost connection and dropped me to a shell. Games are also
working very fine. Do you have Mandrake 8 and XFree 4.0.3 installed?

I have tried the nvidia kernel and GLX 1.xx drivers and cannot run any games
other than the standard penguin comand and the *tris variants with the
exception of Chromium. What a well designed game by the way. Reminds me of my
days as a kid in the arcades. When I try mesa gears or reflection it runs for
a short time and locks up as well as Tux Racer. I get the splash screen and
nothing more. Q3 locks up at the splash screen as well. I followed the
directions for the config file and added the required lines.
I installed the drivers using the .RPM and have a geforce 2 mx PCI, on an
 AMD k6-2 500, 256MB ram, ASUS P5a mobo.
I know some of these may be some sort of Mesa conflict with the Nvidia
drivers but would really like to be able to use this card with Linux with the
success many of you have reported.

But when you burn a wav file to a CD it will be written in a way that a CD

Why would you want to convert them to .wav? The music on a normal CD is in
raw digital format, not .wav, so it's not like your CD player will be able
 to read it anyway...

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.2 not detecting RAM correctly

2001-01-29 Per discussione hellmut

Have you executed lilo every time you changed the config file? I used to forget
that again and again and again and...
But now it works just fine.

 Salman,

I have exactly the same problem as you. I have tried every combination of
append=xxx and label=xxx, upper case M's and lower case m's all to no avail.

However, if I press tab at bootup and type "linux mem=256m" it does work.
It's a pain as you have to do it every time, but nice to know that you can
access that extra memory after all.

I dont understand why it works using this approach but it wont work if I
 specify it in lilo.conf.

You have to execute the command "lilo -v" on a console, you have to be root to
do this.

I did that, but on boot-up, Mandrake is still reporting 64MB, as is the KDE
Control Center. What else could be the matter?

Re: [newbie] KDE problem

2000-09-13 Per discussione Hellmut

Hi!

I have experienced the same problem and I found out where it came from (On my
machine): Every time I ran kdesu on my users desktop, I wasn't able to change the
color scheme anymore. It had to with kdesu here, but I don't know which file got
locked... :(

 --
Here is an interesting one. Whenever I try to change the colour scheme of my
windows in KDE, I run into an unusual problem. The Window titlebar changes
colour, but the font always remains black. The panel changes, but the taskbar
doesn't. The file manager background changes, but in every application, the
window itself (with the exception of the titlebar, borders) remain that drab
gray colour. Every other user can customize, except for me. What do I do to
change this? This is only a minor annoyance, but I wish to resolve
 it.

Re: [newbie] VCD player?

2000-09-09 Per discussione Hellmut

Hmm... I'm having 256 Mb of RAM, but I remember when I only had 64 (On my
K6-2 450) MpegTV was running fine. But the older version is running better
here than the one which comes with 7.1 Maybe you should try the old version
from 7.0?

I tried using it but I only get a small size screen and the frames rate
is only aroung 18. Not to compare to commercial win programs like XingMPEG
which runs at full screen with frames rate up to 30, maybe, Linux needs a
little bit more RAM as mine is only 64 Mb. But one thing, which I'am quite
sure is Linux seems to be easting a lot of my RAM because whenever I run
KDE, which in order to use MpegTV , I see only 7 Mb of my RAM free. Well,
I'am sure all of those utilized RAMs are probably put into good use like
 networking stuff.

 Hey, thanks for the tip.

Re: [newbie] Extracting a .BZ2 file

Hi Stan!

The easiest way under KDE is to open kfm, change to the diirectory where
the

choose
"archiver" to uncompress it.
The not so easy way is to open a shell, change to the directory with the
compressed file in it and then type
tar -xfvz file.tar.gz
or
tar -xIf file.tar.bz2

What is the correct procedure in extracting a tar.bz2 file? I also had
trouble with a tar.gz file that appears to be extracted but still will not
work. I have looked in the HOWTO sections of some websites and it looks
like I need to do /configure which I am not familiar with. Thanks for any

Re: [newbie] Lilo Failure

2000-08-22 Per discussione Hellmut

I don't think that you have to reformate the drive. Has the disk been the
primary one before? It should also be enough to boot from floppy and edit the
/etc/lilo.conf manually to boot from /dev/hdbx.
Much luck!

well, so Linux allocates the drive designation /dev/hdbx based on it's
read of the IDE channel. So, Ineed to change the placement of the drive
on the cable? So, if I correct this, then do I need to re-format/re-write
the partition table to get the drive re-asigned to /dev/hdax?

 Thanks, Michael

[newbie] CD Rom problem after new install

Hi!

I've just done a new install of 7.1 and now my CD Rom is inaccesable. And I found a
very strange process with ktop, it's called "mount", has the pid "414" changes every
time I reboot and is owned by: (!) "". I can't kill this process and every time I
shutdown the system tries to unmount the filesystems again and again and again...

Any suggestions?

Is your Linux installation all in one partition? If it is then it is affected.
But if /home is in another partition you can opt not to format that particular
partition and it will be fine.

Re: [newbie] Still having memory problems!

2000-06-05 Per discussione Hellmut

Hello Cy!

Maybe you're already having one append- line in your lilo.conf, Linux will only
read one them and ignore the other. Hopefully this is the solution to your
problem!

I've reinstalled linux I don't know how many times trying to get it to
recognize all of my memmory. I've tried appending the line append="mem=256M"
to the lilo.conf. I still can't seem to get it to recognize all of my
memmory. I just don't understand. It recognizes both of my processors right
off the bat. I've read that the memmory configuration is stored in
/proc/meminfo. Can I manually edit this file to get Mandrake to see the
rest? Is there a configuration tool that can be used? What if I wanted to
add memmory later, How would I go about it? Does it have anything to do with
the size of my swap file? It's 256 meg. I'm really pleased with all of
madrake's functionality, but I'd really like to be able to utilize all of my
memmory. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi David!

I don't know this program, but every application I've installed so far
came along with a readme file which told me how to install. Usually you
have to open a shell, change to the directory with the program files

Hope that helps!

Re: [newbie] Xauth not writeable

2000-05-06 Per discussione Hellmut

Hi Andrew.

Sounds very similar to something I once had... while being on the
command line, I typed "su" and then "startx", but unfortunately without
changing to the /root directory before. I logged in as root in my
/home/hellmut directory and when I tried to start X as hellmut the next
time, I got the same error message as you. I fixed it the following way:
I deleted the .XAuthority file in my home directory, started X (got some
error messages too) and ended X. Linux wrote a new .XAuthority file and
all went fine after that. When you are logged in as normal user and want
to be root and start X, don't use the "su" command, type "exit" on the
console and you'll get a new login screen. You can as well use strg +
alt + F2.
Hopefully this helps you.

 Hi.

Just installed mk 7 (thought I'd go the whole hog instead of an
update) using the same options for my graphics card and res etc
 as with mk 6.1

However, on giving the command 'startx' it gives be back the
message: 'xauth: /home/andrew/ Xauth not writeable changes
 will be ignored.

I then have to wait for what seems a while before the GUI boots.

Why is this. I'm using the same configurations as in 6.1 and
had no probs there My card is a 3dfx voodoo3 2000 with 32
 bit 800x600 res.

Following options have been added to my /etc/rc.d/rc.local file:
m32
c3
d1
I tested all these options on the command line before and the hd's speed
increased from 3.something to 12.something. A good value I thought, I
tested it some time with the "-k" option and all went fine. But when I
run "hdparm -t /dev/hda" now the value is exactly 5.0. I opened a shell,
typed "hdparm -m0 /dev/hda" and ran hdparm -t again, same value. Then I
switched to "-m32" again and the value increased to 12 mb/sec again.
Strange, isn't it?
My hd is hda (Seagate 313021A), my CD Rom is hdc and my CD writer is
hdd.
Has anyone any ideas?

Re: [newbie] Getting rid of Netscape bookmark message?

2000-05-01 Per discussione Hellmut

Hi!

Have you already checked the rights on the file? Maybe they're for root
only and you have to change them.

Take care!

 Dear friends:

I keep getting the following message from Netscape every five or so
 minutes:

"Bookmarks have changed on disk and are being reloaded".

Then I have to press OK.

I am getting sick (and tired) or maybe just dizzy seeing this
message appear in Netscape 4.7 every five or ten mintues for no reason
 at all.

Any idea how to correct this annoying message!

 Thank you so much.

Re: [newbie] Quanta HTML editor

2000-04-30 Per discussione Hellmut

Hi!

I have to agree Paul, I'm using Quanta+ too since it was on the CD of
the german mag "PC Intern" 5/2000, it's very self explaining. It's made
for people who know HTML and who don't need the unnecnessary code
StarOffice for example produces.

Hellmut

 Hi all,

I have gotten and installed Quanta. It works really good!!
At this point I am using it to make a webpage about my uses of Linux
(Mandrake of course!), and it behaves pretty good.
It did keel over and disappeared at one point, not sure what happened
there, but I ran it again and so far no problem.
So, if you intend to start using it, hit ctrl-s (save) often!

Re: R: [newbie] a couple of questions...

2000-04-26 Per discussione Hellmut

Hi!

Edit /etc/lilo.conf as root.
Look for a line with append="".
If between the brackets is already something like hdd=ide-scsi type mem=128M
behind it.
Example: append="hdd=ide-scsi mem=128M"

Example without ide-scsi: append="mem=128M"

Then in a console type lilo -v

That should do it.

 Hi Paul!
Even this is not the first time I deal with Linux (the first time was over 5
years ago, with Linux Slackware, and the configuration was very very
hard!!), now I've the same memory problem!
My Athon 600MHz on a Microstar's motherboard is not able to recognize more
 then 65Mb instead of 128.
Unfortunately I didn't find any solution yet, so I cannot help you in this
moment. Nevertheless as soon as I'll be able to do it I'll write to you
 immediately!
About the network, I never connected together two (or more) Linux
workstation (I want to do it in the future).

I hope that if you find a solution for the RAM's trouble before me you will
 write to me.

 Thank you
 Damiano

[newbie] MPEG player?

2000-04-11 Per discussione Hellmut

Hi!

I just got some really huge MPEGs from a friend, mpegtv from one of the
Mandrake CDs shuts down the sound after one minute, the "mtvp" command
line
program hasn't got a GUI and doesn't offer a pause option. Is there any
free
MPEG player? I tried to register mpegtv, which gets done by an
organisation
called "KAGI"... and they registered me for a Windows tool... I don't
use
Windows, only Linux. They don't respond to my two mails I've sent them,
so has
anyone any idea where I can get a free MPEG player with a GUI?

Re: [newbie] LILO prob

2000-04-04 Per discussione Hellmut

Hi!

 Hi folks,

I have install MDK7.0 using linux4win and everything works just perfect. My
box has 192mb of memory, but mdk only tells me that I have 64mb. I went
into /etc/lilo.conf (which I made as there was no file) and edited it with
-- append="mem192m" But it did not, still shows that I have 64mb.

It has to be "mem=192M"
And don't forget to run lilo after this.

Sorry, no idea 'bout your other problems, I'm only running Linux and nothing
else.
Take care and much luck!

Re: [newbie] Gross email bad manners

2000-03-19 Per discussione Hellmut

Hi!

This maybe off- topic, but before attacking this guy for sending out
such a huge
mail, we should take the time and think back when we were new in the
internet and
did some things that offended some other people and learned out of it.
Nobody
accesses the internet with knowledge about what to do and what not. Not
that I have
been happy to have this large file into my mailbox - but I would prefer
to say just
something like "Hey, you shouldn't send large mails as this to a
mailinglist
because... blahblahblah...". Don't tell me that you never did something
like this
when you have been a beginner. Try to react on things like this the same
way you
would have liked the people some time ago on your offending mails.
Be sure he won't do it again!
Take good care,
