Re: [newbie] Return of Error occurred during the Filesystems check

MAIN TOPIC: KDE DOESN'T LIKE ME!!!

OK, well, I can't help you with any of the stuff below =-( BUT, I can
tell you one other thing to try before the dreaded 3-Finger Salute.

No problem, ANY information is greatly appreciated!

Try jumping to one of the other virtual terminals by pressing
control-alt-F2 or any of the other function keys 3-6. If that doesn't
work (and make sure to give it a good long time), then if at all possible,
try to telnet to the machine from another machine. Orderly shutdown is
VERY important in linux for exactly the reason you describe below.

Ahh, CTL-ALT-F2? I was just trying "ALT-F2", as it is in Bash.

Oh, you can also press cntrl-alt-backspace to try to kill the x-server, i
think, or try cntrl-alt-F1 and then control-c to do the same.

WOW, that's a godsend! I'm now back into the shell and I can see all
sorts of funny error messages! Okay, here goes!

I get a screenfull of stuff... it probably stretches WAY before where I
was. Anyway!

kpanel: waiting for windowmanager
No such file or directoryQdir::readDirEntries: Cannot read the directory
/root/Desktop/Templaces
ERROR: Templaye does not exist '/root/Desktop/Templates/'
PID could not get read.
((*repeat 8 more times))
Could not read '/tmp//kfm-cache-0/index.txt'

PID could not get read.
PID could not get read.
kwmsound: Failed connecting the audio server.
Please check manually if you can start kaudioserver.
((*I never ever configured a sound card in Linux... it wasn't a concern
of mine.))
kfm (kdebase): warning, case not handled in processError()
kfm (kdebase): action = 16, kioerror = 7
kfm (kdebase): error msg = http://www.netscape.com/
((*Hmm, can you tell I was trying to access Netscape?))
((*Now, I get a big line of y's with two dots over them... about one and
a half lines worth.))
Warning: /dev/mouse unable to get status of mouse fd (Input/outpot
error)
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address
001b

And then it goes into the HD error (with the stack and all) that I
reported in the last message and prints out "Ooops" and all.

(At this point, I pressed CTL-ALT-DEL, which, on my system,
automatically attempts to unmount the filesystems and reboot...
unfortunately, the filesystems were being used... DAMN!)

Actually, I think I know ONE problem right off of the bat... how do you
set your mouse? I have a feeling my Mouse is incorrectly set. On the
motherboard, it's plugged into "COM1". That means its a Serial Mouse?
(I have an authentic Microsoft Mouse. Don't you all scream at me, now,
this thing's from the late 1980's and I think it's cool that I still
have it; I used it with my 286. Even more surprising, I still have the
original software and the original manuals, too!)

Anyway, would it work any better if I plugged the port into the "PS/2
mouse" port on my motherboard? (BTW, how do I configure the mouse for
X11 anyway?)

Re: [newbie] Linux RPM, how to open.

1999-09-11 Per discussione kkwan

Okay, cool. Make sure that the /etc/lilo.conf line looks exactly like
 this:

 append="mem=64M"

Also, after you check that or make the changes, run /sbin/lilo to write
the boot block back out with the updates. Maybe that got missed after
 the previous change?

Okay, new problem.

KDE seems to crash on me a lot (I was working with kpackage). After one
crash, I was working with the PPP interface, when suddenly, the shell
crashed on me with a big stack error.

When I reboot, it checks the hard disks, then it says, "/dev/hd1:
Duplicate/bad block(s) in inode 22600:/dev/hd1: and it lists off a lot
of other blocks with a similar label.

After a bunch of errors, it concludes with, "/dev/hd1: UNEXPECTED
CONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY. (i.e. without -a or -p options)
In red, it concludes with, [FAILED].

Basically, it's a corrupted filesystem, I think. So how do I run fsck
and fix it?

[newbie] Linux RAM problem

1999-09-10 Per discussione kkwan

I have a problem with Linux Mandrae 6.0 (Venus). When I boot
up my computer, the BIOS reads that I have 65535 K of ram (64 megs).
However, when I reach the Shell Log In screen, the system reports that
I have only 16 megs of RAM.

What's the deal? what do I do to make it detect my 64 megs of
RAM?

I am using the default kernel (I think it's 2.2.2-17), an AMD-K6
233, on a Tyan Tomcat motherboard. I have four 8 meg RAM chips.

Also, when I recently tried to reinstall, the system kicks
me out with a "Signal 3" error. I don't remember what the exact
message is anymore, since I'm now reinstalling Windows 95 until I
can get a good book (or a reply from this mailing list).

Eventually, I want to network two computers for Internet
Sharing of a Cable Modem (yep, IP Masquerading), and I know that
Windows is paltry for that, but I can't even get PPP working in
KDE yet (I have the update on my drive here, if only I can get a
disk). I'm also hoping to get file sharing working as well, and
I ultimately hope to get a small web server up for a personal
web page.

So I'll come back and ask about those sorts of things when
I can get Linux detecting my RAM properly.

(Side note, I used to be subscribed as "Digest" when the
mail flow got too high, but that way, I couldn't seem to post!
Arrgh!!!)

Can you post the output of the 'free' command? Also, try 'dmesg | grep
 Memory' and send that too.

Sure can!

(By the way, at the LILO prompt, I can type "linux mem=64M" and it will
work just fine, but in /etc/lilo.conf, line five reads
"append="mem=64M"" and it seems to do nothing.)

These are both typed in as the Root user, at the Bash shell prompt.

[newbie] Lynx doesn't run

1999-08-26 Per discussione kkwan

When I try running Lynx from the console, I get a message,
"Metamail: Can't open temporary file!"

It even happened if I uninstalled metamail. What's up
with that, I can't use X-Windows because my system is too slow, so I
want to use the good old text browser.

Can anyone help me out? Thanks.
