If you only have a little rust, I would opt for cleaning the tank as best
you can and then keeping the tank as full as you can because it will not
rust if it not exposed to air. This has worked for me for several years on a
1971 tank. Also add some inline fuel filters. Wynn

I used POR15 on mine. There are others that people have used but I
can't remember the names. A search of the archives would probably pull
it up. Some swear by them, others think it will fall off the tank and
gum up the line. There are also products that claim to "eat the rust".
If you only have a little you might go that way.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Fork springs and oil

2010-06-18 Thread Graham Rogers

It may be covered by the axle Javier

On Jun 18, 2010, at 2:01 PM, Javier Garcia wrote:

Hi all,
this weekend I am installing the progressive fork springs I bought
few days ago. I thought about changing the fork seals, but I have
decided they are fine and that I am not doing that for now.
However, I do want to take out the old springs, drain the old oil
inside, do some cleaning, and then insert the new springs with new
oil. According to the manual at the bottom of each fork leg there
is a small nut to drain the oil. The problem is that my '96 750 do
not have them! the forks show a small cylindrical shaped
protuberance where they are supposed to be, but there is not hole,
not nut... the fork is all just one solid piece. The weird thing is
that this does not look to be a modification at all. I mean, it
looks like the fork was made like that. Does anyone else have the
same thing? how am I supposed to drain the oil?

Thanks

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Alcohol Schmakohol

2010-06-18 Thread stanley/ Randolph
I forgot that you said that he runs MM Oil instead of 2-stroke oil:  What ratio
does he use?  MM really isn't a good oil to use in that application, but to
each his own, I guess.
There are four types of Amsoil for 2-strokes, and some racing types swear by
it.  Big boats, snowmobile racers, go-carts, water skis, and the list goes on.
I use the formula for lawn equipment in my Shindaiwa line trimmer at 100:1
ratio; I have used it commercially for six years, and it was about 10 years old
when I bought it from a pawn shop.  It still runs strong, although it's time
for a new head.
Down here in La. we have open drainage along the roads, so my trimmer really
gets a lot of use.  One property I do takes about 45 minutes just in the
ditches, and then another 45 around the buildings and fences.
I  usually lengthen the line for the ditches from about 18 " to about 25",
because, although it strains the motor some, it also tempers the speed and I
get a more even cut and take less time as well.
As for it being in the gas, it is more corrosive in the tanks, esp. if there's
a lot of water from humidity and in the case of marine use.
This is something to remain aware of for your motorcycle, because of the
exposure to corrosion both at fill up and when riding in the rain, when water
can enter the fuel.
Stanley

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: installing a kick starter

2010-06-18 Thread Stumpi
Joey, I've got a parts bike '79 400 automatic in my back yard that
came with my 450 and it does indeed have a kick starter. I had always
wondered if it was possible to swap them over. I remember taking a
look a few months ago and deciding the cases were different but I'm
not sure. I'll look again if you have any interest. I'm putting this
thing up as a pick a part on Craigslist here shortly. Missing too
many parts and the engine is seized or I'd consider trying to get it
running again.

Pick here: http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii155/Stumpifier/400kickstart.jpg

Dustin I'm 99% sure this won't fit your bike or I'd have offered it in
my first post. Even if there is a kick start delete port the motor is
different and likely used different gears if not an completely
different mechanism if it ever came with a kick starter.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Fork springs and oil

2010-06-18 Thread Javier Garcia
Hi all,
this weekend I am installing the progressive fork springs I bought few days
ago. I thought about changing the fork seals, but I have decided they are
fine and that I am not doing that for now. However, I do want to take out
the old springs, drain the old oil inside, do some cleaning, and then insert
the new springs with new oil. According to the manual at the bottom of each
fork leg there is a small nut to drain the oil. The problem is that my '96
750 do not have them! the forks show a small cylindrical shaped protuberance
where they are supposed to be, but there is not hole, not nut... the fork is
all just one solid piece. The weird thing is that this does not look to be a
modification at all. I mean, it looks like the fork was made like that. Does
anyone else have the same thing? how am I supposed to drain the oil?

Thanks
Javier.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: My NightHawk

2010-06-18 Thread Stumpi
Very nice, that is almost exactly what I just did with mine. I picked
up my '82 450 in December and worked on it til Feburary when it was
fixed and the roads were clear enough for test rides. I've now got
about 3000 miles on it with many many modifications and tweeks and
plans for much more. Anyone ever restuff the seat on these? That's
coming soon for mine. Here's a picture:

2010-06-18 Thread Graham Rogers
Sean, 5 years ago, we were in and out of Hawaii for 20 something
years. We lived on Guam and the Marianas. In training for running
races on Guam, I would run around the airport in Honolulu, shower
and take a nap in one of those little cubicles (pre 9/11). That's
where I had my first Nighthawk, a 450 that someone left in my
driveway because it died as soon as it hit 4 -5k rpms. I wrung the
oil out of the air filter and it was fine.
Next time I go to New Zealand, I'll be staying overnight in Hawaii,

One of the things about living in Hawaii is that people ship their
bikes here and don't take them with them. The above 550 is a perfect
example - he shipped his bike here a year ago and now doesn't have the
cash to take it with him. I also have two friends leaving at the end
of the summer who are going to leave their bikes with me if they can't
sell - a late 80's Magna 750 and 2004 v-star. If I add this bike I'll
be up to 4. There''s also a 70's Honda Twinstar 200 that I'm looking
at for my 15 year old - My goal is to catch Graham.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Temporary Lighting repair

2010-06-18 Thread Joey Kelley
Everything else is ok - your comment about the two lights makes me
even more curious, the bike appears to have been re-wired since it
left the factory - however - I have never bothered to dig any deeper
than the obvious re-routing of wires to see why or what was done. The
fuses were checked at one point - that might have been 10 years ago
though so I might have missed something. I should take my own advice
and just replace them all on principal.
I'll do that shortly and let everyone know.
Thanks Gene!

I would take it off since it's relatively easy to do. Cleaning it
isn't hard. The trick is drying it out thoroughly so any left over gas
doesn't ignite.. I used a hair dryer for this, warm dry air evaporated
all of the gas. There's some debate about whether or not to coat the
inside of the tank. If it's not rusted you may not need to. If it is
rusted make sure you clean it thoroughly and do a good job. Make sure
the coating sticks.

My 450 has a delete plug where you can see that the same block was
used for a kicker - I believe that the 350 and 400 Honda Hawks had
kick (I know I saw an automatic transmission one once that had a kick
- I'd guess it was because you couldn't jump / roll start it??) But
I've never heard of a Nighthawk that had one.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] new NH 750 owner

2010-06-18 Thread stanley/ Randolph
It would seem that isopropyl alcohol would not do any more removing of water
than ethanol would.  They are both able to bond with either water or gas, and
hence their ability to "remove" water from gasoline.
I can not remember what country it is in S.A., but one uses alcohol as a fuel
anyway, corrosive as it can be.
I concur that  paying more for alcohol free fuel and then adding it back, even
if it is isopropyl, is throwing away money.
If there is a boost in power, it is because the water that the alcohol soaked
up is burning in the fuel.
Alcohol produces less power than gasoline, but the added water (15%,  I
believe) enhances the power of the alcohol when it turns to steam in the
burning of the alcohol.  This makes it somewhat the equivalent of gasoline.
If one uses water injection, with a high compression engine (like more than
12.5:1), it will produce much more power with half the fuel.  Like this guy (a
mechanic), for example, replaced the stock pistons in a Ford Focus to up the
compression to 12.7:1 and added water injection.  Stock compression was, I
think, like 8.7.
He still used 87 octane, and went from stock 25 mpg to 50 mpg with increased
performance as well.
My device only boosts power minimally, but makes the fuel charge burn clean and
faster, which ups the mileage, some 40% to - I've personally achieved 62% in an
old Dodge Dynasty, which means about 27.8 mpg on the road, where stock was
about 17.  It was about 13 in town, and that went up to 20 to 21.
In a Subaru Legacy, I achieved an increase from 27 to around 41 or 42, which is
around 66%  - and that's with a leaky intake valve and going between 80 and 100
mph.  It was an intake, because as the velocity of the air going in increased,
the stumbling of the engine misfiring decreased; also, due to the  charge
burning more quickly, the power was generated sooner and therefore headed out
the exhaust before the intake.  Before the valve started leaking, I was getting
around 30 - 31 mpg.
The benefits arent limited to increased mileage.   I also found that, after
10,000 miles of driving in the Dynasty, the oil no longer turned black and the
power of the engine was restored to nearly stock, so far as I can tell (it
would invariably spin the tires on wet pavement if I didn't use just the barest
pressure on the pedal).
The other advantage - and this would really benefit Nighthawks, being as
they're air cooled - is because the charge burns faster, produces its power
sooner, the heat doesn't get dissipated partially in the exhaust valves.  In
other words, in a normal burn without brown gas (hydrogen and oxygen from the
water), the burn would be going on as the charge, still burning, heads out the
exhaust, heating up the valve.
I know, because way back when, riding my Honda 50 step thru at night, I looked
down and saw a red glow on the pavement.  I leaned over more and saw that it
was coming from the cherry red exhaust pipe.
Now, if the exhaust pipe was that red, think of what torture the valve was
taking at 9,500 rpm.
In a critical situation where the engine can't get rid of the heat, it would
build up and cause a burned exhaust valve.  Remember that, in the few
milliseconds the exhaust valve remains closed, it has to transfer enough heat
to the seat and the head to keep from burning up.  Hence, the finned retainer
around the exhaust pipe where it connects to the port.
It is a marvel of alloy technology that prevented the exhaust valve in that
small engine not to burn up, while producing that much power: five horsepower
out of a 50cc engine (actually, 49cc).

attend the larger events.

They can and do modify seats on the spot, same day and at reasonable

to see if any of those events are happening near you.

Here's a tip that may save you some grief later:

There's an o-ring and a nylon filter "sleeve" that fits down over the
brass tube and seats down in the body of the petcock. It's a press
fit kind of an assembly and is held in place by the same large nut
that holds the petcock to the tank.

Make sure that's in place before you insert the tube into the tank
fitting, then push the whole assembly up into the tank with your
thumbs (fitting looks like a piece of threaded pipe).

Also make sure the petcock is square to the tank and facing you when
you do this, so it doesn't require twisting the assembly back and
forth to get it aligned properly, after you've started snugging the
big nut.

If you have to twist the petcock back and forth to align it, you risk
tearing, shredding or twisting the nylon filter, like the previous
owner did to mine (!)

More than likely more trouble than you're willing to go through to get
it done. I've heard of some machines still having the right holes for
a kick start mechanism, they only thing that needs doing is to get a
new side cover and install the guts for one. However the 550 is just
a smaller version of the 650 which itself was a new engine in the 80s

outside of some extensive modifications it'll be rather hard to put a

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Corbin (or other brand) seat wanted

Another shopping option for this kind of work: Seat mod vendors often
travel to motorcycle shows and rallies. In fact, I think Corbin reps
attend the larger events.

They can and do modify seats on the spot, same day and at reasonable
cost, considering how complicated the mod is. Might be worth checking
to see if any of those events are happening near you.

I'd be interested in that too, for just the gel pad installation.
Cover on my Corbin is pristine, so no need to replace.

Bike is a '95 NH, identical to yours and Javier's.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Carb Air Joint Hose Connections

2010-06-18 Thread Kyle Munz
There were no filters on mine, but who knows. There's not a lot of air being
sucked up through there. A few inches of hose hanging straight down would at
least keep the rain out. If you found some tiny enough K&Ns to stick on the
end of them it'd probably help. Might look neat too. Glen is right though,
there's also a tiny vacuum hose from the lefthand carb to the fuel petcock.
There's no T-fittings there though.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: 82 750 chain gets ttight then loose

2010-06-18 Thread Glen Minty
More than likely, the chain is rusted in some spots. Take the front
sprocket cover off and spin the wheel, when you reach a tight spot you
will see the chain will not seat properly on the teeth.

No amount of adjusting will fix this. Time to replace the chain.

[Nighthawk Lovers] installing a kick starter

2010-06-18 Thread dustin-t
i have a 1983 honda nighthawk 550. the bike rides and runs great, and
i ride it on a daily basis. the only issue I really have is that my
starter is inconsistent and my battery can't hold a charge. I will
probably buy a new battery soon, but nevertheless, i push start my
bike almost every day. I have absolutely no qualms about this -- i
don't even bother with the electric starter most days. this can of
course be a bit inconvenient though depending on my destination!

anyway, i was thinking that i would love to have a kick start for my
bike so i could not worry about the electrical system and not worry
about finding a hill! any thoughts on if it would be possible AND not
too much of a pain in the ass to install a kick starter?

thanks,
Dustin

He's right. Chains tend to wear unevenly. When you get to the
point where you have noticable tight and loose spots, it's time for a
new chain. That one is worn out.
