The story goes that the wife is selling it for her deceased husband. She

It has a new battery. Why? It has a clear title in her name. If I sold my
deceased wife's car, I would just sign her name on the title. She doesn't
have PoA? Yesterday this bike was listed on CL in Atlanta and Athens. I
wonder if anyone got sucked in.

Surf, funny timing. I was just thinking of making a Rocky and Bullwinkle
reference, but I though it might sail over the heads of these young'uns.

Quebec actually has an accent over the first e in French, so yes, it is
Kay- beck.

I actually spoke French pretty fluently when I lived with French family
and studied it full time in 1980. I found that I could read it just fine,
but I can't come up with the vocabulary in real time to speak it anymore.
Actually, everyone spoke English to me and no one acted uppity about it.

I'm currently in Syracuse, NY, and I should make it to my native
Cleveland, OH tomorrow.

And, so that this post has something to do with motorcycles, I rode here on
Ol' Yelller!

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Bought another PC800

2016-03-19 Thread Glenn Evanish
Too early to call, Paul. The red one runs a bit hot. Makes me nervous about
summer riding. I'm going to do a radiator flush and fresh coolant and see
how it runs. I prefer the red paint, but the black paint is in better
shape. Been watching painting vids on YouTube. It cost me $300 to make the
red one street legal. That gives me extra incentive to go with it. Working
so many hours these days that I'm tempted to take it to a shop and tell
them "call me when it's right." Even that takes time, though. Then there's
Hawks roundball vying for my time...

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Nighthawk 250 CC Tour!

2016-03-19 Thread Glenn Evanish
I tried to make it to Seattle from Atlanta on my same chain and ended up
changing it in Denver. By all means, put a $100+ chain on it before
leaving. I also had to buy a sweatshirt because of the cold in CO. But I
ended up finding a Georgia Bulldogs sweatshirt at Goodwill for $4.00! I had
no room for it, but I liked it so much I strapped it on the seat behind me
and brought it home.

why mine doesn't and with all that Tupperware, it isn't so easy to find out.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Electrical Idiot

2012-06-26 Thread Glenn Evanish

Corey,

If you look at your battery on your bike, it of course has a + and a -
terminal, as all batteries do. Ever notice where the wire that bolts
onto the - terminal goes to/comes from? It's probably about 4 inches
long and it just bolts onto the frame of your bike. In other words, it
grounds into the frame. This means the - (ground) wire on your
headlight could travel all the way back to your battery's - terminal,
like a flashlight, but that just means it's going to end up going down
that 4-inch wire to the frame from there. What's the point when you've
got frame up in the front by the headlight bucket, too? As long as the
ground wire touches metal (not paint) on the frame, you can ground the
headlight to the frame.

Make sense now?

still a little confused by all the ground talk but I'll just try and
follow your advice word for word and see what happens. When you say the
ground you take off the frame what does that mean? Thanks for your
answer though I'm gonna try this...

A little while back, the headlight on my NH just stopped working,
both high and low beams. You say you tested the headlight and it
works. So did I. I'm going to assume that this means you got the
headlight and 2 pieces of wire and touched them directly to the
battery, yes? That should mean you have already figured out which
connectors on the bulb are + and which is the ground, even if you
don't know which is high or low beam. Next you need to attach a wire
to the + on the headlight connector in the headlight bucket to take
power from it. The ground you take off the frame, not the push-on
connector. Run a ground wire from the bulb to the frame or back to
the ground on the battery if you have a long-enough wire. See what
happens. In my case, the bulb came on, which meant my ground was bad
on the push-on connector to the bulb even though it looked fine on
visual inspection. I cleaned and jiggled and pushed on the ground
until it was making contact again and viola! working headlights,
high and low! Your mileage may vary, but that's my story. Now I'm
an electrical semi-idiot.

You might have to use caveman language with me because even
check the terminals for a bad ground means absolutely nothing
to me cause I have no clue what those are. Only shop around in
my area that will do the electrical on this wants $90 an hour
just to look at it. Trying not to go that route. I apologize for
my idiocy but I'm sure most people understand that everyone use
to know nothing and that happens to be the stage I am in. If you
need more info let me know I can post and reply pretty quickly.
Thanks and I'll post some pics too if need be.

2012-05-24 Thread Glenn Evanish

Graham,

Oh, he has his whole parts catalog on line here:
http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14561.html. It's pretty much all
there when it comes to XJ bikes.

On-line he is chacal, e-mail he is Len. Go figure. If you do order, use
the PayPal option. I waited over a month, ostensibly because he was
waiting for my check to clear, for some crappy OEM clutch bolts that
broke on tightening. I ended up going with off the shelf bolts from Ace.

I happen to own, for a little longer at least, an '81 XJ550. Boots for
the Mikuni carbs on my bike are here:

http://www.partsnmore.com/parts/yamaha/xj550/?filters[fitting]=custom

If your 650 also has a Mikuni bs28, those boots should work for you. You
are talking about the ones between the carbs and the engine head, aren't
you? If you mean the air cleaner side, I've got an extra set for a 550
that could work for you.

I'm planning on selling the XJ550 soon as the project is finished, so
unless I buy another project 550 (doubtful), I won't be needing them.

I just went to the garage and pushed, pulled, and twirled the wire. No
light. I've got a tester and a wiring diagram, but I'm at a loss for
what to do with them.

Sorry, I neglected to say that the first thing I did was change the

says to look for a loose headlight dimmer wire in the start button
unit on the right handlebar next to the throttle. I could not see
anything that looked out of place in there.

The only thing I did to hook up the 12V socket was to put the loops
through the battery bolts, run the wire under the gas tank, and bolt
the socket unit onto the handlebars. I attached a battery tender 2-
prong socket at the same time and secured it to the frame. Both the
GPS and battery tender worked great. It wasn't till I had to ride back
from work in the dark that I realized I had a problem.

Thanks,

The fuse was the first thing I checked. I did not tie into any circuit.
I bolted the lead wires from the socket directly to the battery terminals.
