The better AFL comparison to MK Dons is the Brisbane Bears.
Fitzroy moved there in a merger, and all that's left is their nickname and part
of the strip.
The Swans were more of a move upmarket.
As for the Giants, you will probably get more at the next NSWolves do that they
get at Homebush

Morning all,

The end of season wake will be taking place this Saturday, 18th May 2013.

Time: 12pm
Venue: Rag & Famish Hotel, 199 Miller Street, North Sydney (only 400m from
North Sydney station)

I'm hoping that a small change in location will bring a huge change in fortunes
for Wolves.

Hope to see loads of you there on Saturday.

Cheers,
Marcus

I'd almost forgotten about Wolves. Might be time to bow out.

What say you that we change this group to "English Midlands Swans" and become a
supporters club for the Sydney Swans purely of people that used to be Wolves
fans?

We were top of the "ladder" on Friday night and at least we could go to games
or watch them on TV. Plus it's a man's game

we're not a Premier League club anymore hurts. A lot.
Still, when you think about it, there are a few positives to come out of being
in the Championship next season. Like these 10.
1. We might win a game and/or keep a clean sheet. Wi-nn-ing you say? What's
that then? Some new fandangled concept from David Cameron's crazy ideas machine
to make us all forget the recession, the death of the NHS and Michael Gove's
face? Oh no sorry, I remember - winning. Yes we might actually win a football
match, what a notion that is. Or keep a clean sheet more regularly than once
every eight months. If we're lucky our first home win of 2012 will be in
August. Let's face it, after winning 27 matches in our promotion season, and
just 25 since then, it'll be nice not to be in a relegation battle. Presumably.
2. The leg room at Molineux will be plentiful. With just 12.000 season tickets
in a 30,000 stadium, there'll be room to spare. If you don't like the annoying
bloke sitting near you, just pick another seat. Oh and the shiny new North Bank
will look lovely. Well, if they can sort out the wonky 'S' on 'Wolves' which
looks like it's been drawn by Amy Childs after three bottles of Lambrini, that
is.
3. Referees will be biased towards us, not against. Steve Finnan's handball
for Portsmouth, red cards for Karl Henry (against Arsenal), Nenad Milijas
(against Arsenal) and Sebastien Bassong (against Arsenal), Tim Howard, Jonathan
Woodgate and Frank Lampard not being sent off, the trial by media after Karl
Henry versus Joey Barton, etc, etc. Anyone remember so many injustices in the
20 years or so in the Championship preceding that? Exactly.
4. Far fewer diving cheats. Probably the worst thing about the Premier League.
To be fair to the refs, their life is made ten times more difficult by the
diving, histrionics and constant ear-bashing, mostly from the foreign element
of the Premier League. And Ashley Young.
5. Don't have to put up with the ignominy of being last on Match of the Day.
Think of all the hours we've wasted sitting through an hour of Match of the
Day, waiting for our 10-minute snippet at the end. You're talking, what, 30
hours a season maybe, which works out at nearly four of your human days over
three years. Use next season's extra time wisely, perhaps by taking up a new
hobby, or maybe by solving the riddle of what on earth Richard Stearman is
keeping under that bandage on his arm.
6. We'll have a new manager. Yes that'll be nice won't it? And also...
7. It won't be Terry Connor. I couldn't feel sorrier for him if he was a
two-month-old Labrador puppy with three legs and a woof impediment. But he's
just not manager material, is he? Plus I don't think I can bear to watch
another of his heart-wrenching post-match interviews, with his lips pursed so
tightly together they look like they're about become stuck, like Keanu Reeves

you've got the worst managerial record in Premier League history. And a bird
has just defecated on your head, I can confirm that too Terry. After 13 years
you're probably going to get the sack too, aren't you? And your reputation's in
tatters. How do you feel about that? Terry?"
8. Saturday 3pm kick-off times. And a few on Tuesday nights as well. Forget
this Sunday 2pm and Saturday 12.05pm malarkey.
9. We can all hide under a rock for a season. After the most humiliating few

Does anyone think England has a realistic chance of finishing any higher than
3rd place in the group?

I think we're stuffed and will be lucky to win a game. I don't really rate
Lampard but now that he's out we have called up Jordan Henderson who this year
for Liverpool contributed 2 goals and 1 assist in 37 games. Also with no Rooney
for the first two games we could be homeward bound before he kicks a ball in
anger.

Depressing times for England. At least things are looking much rosier for
Wolves.

[NSWolves] From "The Fiver"

2012-03-19 Thread Parkes Jim - Sydney-MHA
Of course, it can sometimes be difficult for people within football to accept
unpalatable truths. Talking of which, Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey has been
speaking about his team's 5-0 spanking by Manchester United, their haul of four
points from a possible 27 in their past nine games, and their consequent slide
to Premier League bottomdome. "In footballing terms we are, of course,
extremely disappointed ... but we should put things into some sort of
perspective," he said. "We are in our third consecutive season in the Premier
League and still with every chance of going on to win our survival battle." The
fire's still burning in Moxey, which is just as well because Molineux is one
ground the Olympic torch won't bother to visit. Having said that its route
through Wolverhampton, according to the local paper, will involve some
line-dancing Elvis impersonators, and there has got to be a chance they're
referring to Wolves' back four.

Curbishley is now a strong odds on favourite to become manager.
Morgan has said he likes Curbishley
50% of fans on Mol Miux have said they like Curbishley.

Safe to say he will be our next manager.

[NSWolves] New signing

2011-12-21 Thread Parkes Jim - Sydney-MHA
>From The Fiver today:

And Hearts midfielder Eggert Jonsson has agreed a January move to Wolves. "I'm
really pleased to be here and looking forward to getting started," said
Jonsson, curiously omitting the phrase "and being paid for my troubles".

How on earth Berbatov can't get a start at Utd is beyond belief. He may appear
lazy but his touches and vision are class.

The Baggies got a result away to Newcastle.

Wigan have got a valuable point against Liverpool. Something we couldn't do.

Everton are starting to pick up points to pull away from us.

Sunderland have taken points of QPR.

We need to start winning.

RE: [NSWolves] Can someone pls remove me from this googlegroup?

2011-10-18 Thread Parkes Jim - Sydney-MHA
I have often wondered how my life would have changed if, on that fateful
Wednesday night in 1966, my Dad had taken me to Old Trafford instead of
Molineux. It's rather like dreaming of winning lotto: a few minutes of fantasy
and then back to reality. Nevertheless, it was Molineux that night and I was
immediately under the Wolves spell. I really don't know how anyone can stop
supporting them. Remember those few minutes back in 80's when we almost went
bust, and the Doog came through at the last minute to save us (albeit
temporarily). I was on the 'phone to England where dad had the receiver against
the radio with live coverage of events. The sheer joy of being saved. I still
think of that moment when things look bleak. Prefer to support a Wolves side
wherever they may be, and long as they are there.
We will have our time in the sun again sometime.

Yes Richard, thats right, theres no way out. Supporting Wolves is a life
long suffering there is no escape from. You can change your room, but you
can't checkout.

You can run, but you can't hide. You think you're free, but sooner or later
you'll walk around the corner and see another loser in a Old Gold and Black
shirt, and you'll start wondering again... I wonder where they are in the
league now? (should be IF they are still in the league) They must be doing
better by now ? (no, they wont be) I wonder if they've found another Steve
Bull ? (no, theres more chance of him making a comeback) Have they still got
that Mick McCarthy as manager ? (yes, they probably will) Have they bought
any decent players yet (no, they wont have)

We must all be paying a penance for a high price for being horrible people
in previous incarnations. But we have probably chosen to be Wolves fans as I
hear the more suffering you choose in each life, the greater growth you can
achieve. So when we get to the pearly gates, we'll all be in for a BIG
heavenly payout that will make 500 virgins seem like childs play.

I'm sure Steve will take you off the list. But what will you tell God when
he meets you and he asks why you walked out on your chosen suffering ? Out
of Darkness remember... ;-)

Good afternoon all,

After much hunting, I have finally tracked down the exporter of Banks's &
Marston's products from England, who has referred me to the Australian Importer
and distributor.

I am intending to place an order for some Banks's Mild and also some Banks's
Bitter. Before I do, the importer has asked me to check whether anyone else
would like any other Banks's or Marston's products, as it will be easier to
order everything at the same time.

So can you please let me know, by Friday 12th August, if you would like to
order or enquire about any Banks's or Marston's products. Please also feel
free to send this email onto anyone else you know who might be interested. The
more we can order the cheaper it is likely to be.

Idiots. Looks like they'll be showing Villa v Liverpool and Bolton v Man City
from the voting. 2 matches that dont mean anything to relegation, just because
of the volume of fans. They could easily just show the relegation matches +
ManUtd (anyway).

btw, If they are recording IPs, just try voting from a different machine or

Brum 0 Wolves 1
We score early (Foley) and then hold on for the rest of the 90 minutes.

Wolves 0 Albion 2
Wild scenes after the match including many injuries

Sunderland 0 Wolves 0
Noted by many as one of the worst games of the season

Wolves 0 Blackburn 0
Both sides need a draw to stay up because of other results going in our favour,
and we get it

We finish on 38 points, with Wigan, West Ham and Blackpool going down.
We survive by only scoring one more goal.

Dr Andrew Parker: The Bible got everything right
Dr Andrew Parker, 41, is a biologist at Oxford University. His latest book, The
Genesis Enigma: Why The Bible Is Scientifically Accurate, claims the story of
Genesis matches the history of the universe so accurately it could only have
been written with divine intervention.

Have you proved the existence of God?

I don't think I've proved the existence of God. I've proved there is space in
the universe where God might exist.
[cid:image001.jpg@01CBACEB.652A3CB0]
It would be quite a scoop.

Well, yes. But if I find evidence there isn't a God then as a scientist that
would satisfy me too.

Isn't this another example of religion masquerading as science?

Absolutely not. I devoted most of my early career to science and leaned toward
being an atheist. That's changed during the writing of this book, which
revealed surprising parallels between Genesis and the scientific history of the
universe. Not only is the sequence of events in Genesis scientifically correct
but some of the events themselves are really quite precise, which would have
been impossible for a human to know at that time. You have to conclude that
either the author made extremely lucky guesses or something strange was going
on: divine inspiration.

That's a massive leap, isn't it?

To say there's something mysterious going on is probably not too great a leap.
What I reveal is something beyond human intelligence, beyond testing with
scientific equipment.

In Genesis, God creates the earth in six days, makes man out of dust and
there's no mention of the Big Bang. If it was written with God's help, why is
so much wrong?

It's the authors adding their artistic interpretation, shoehorning the facts
into the type of story people would be able to understand.

You say the second 'Let there be light...' refers to the evolution of the eye
but you edited out the rest of the line, which clearly refers to the Sun, Moon
and stars. There's no mention in Genesis of the evolution of the eye.

Um, OK. I'll probably have a look at this in more detail again. The first page
of the Bible doesn't spell out the eye but it doesn't spell out any of the
science in detail.

Your argument seems full of holes.

I would say it's the best guess with the best fit.

Is there any real evidence, or just speculation?

If you want to say it's 100 per cent evidence for God, no. With this book,
there might be indirect evidence - it's the strongest evidence for the
existence of God I've come across. I'm not sure how you would describe it.

Flawed.

Well, that's an opinion and that's something I'm interested in. I'm not trying
to fool anyone. I'm just trying to get to the bottom of this.

Are science and religion irreconcilable?

The atheist movement argues that with science there's no more room for
religion. So you either have faith in religion with no rational backing
whatsoever or you follow science - and science dictates there's no room for
God, which isn't true. There are things beyond our realm we can't solve with
science.

You say creationism is harmful to both religion and science. Why?

Creationism is totally unfounded. It is as dangerous as fundamentalism in other
religions.

Creationists say evolution and the Big Bang are just theories. What do you
think?

The problem with calling them theories is that anything can be called a theory.
It doesn't suggest the probability of it being right. On probability, you have
creationism at something like 0.0001 per cent and evolution at 99. per cent
so it's not fair to put them in the same category.

You criticise atheism because you think it's disturbing to believe there's no
God or heaven. Just because those things might be comforting doesn't make them
true, does it?

No. But what I'm saying is that if the evidence doesn't necessarily point one
way or another, perhaps we're better off with religion

Not sure this Guardian report is correct . How can Stoke turnover 3 x times as
much as us? According to this report their turnover this season was 54m to our
lowly 18m.

They must have some fantastic sponsorship deals in place as their gate receipts
are less than ours. Must be something to do with the TV deal and payments is
all I can think of for this huge difference.

[NSWolves] Another Guardian piece

2009-12-16 Thread Parkes Jim - Sydney-MHA
Any Wolves fans reading this who were at Old Trafford on Tuesday night may like
to post a comment or two to clear up a mystery.

When defending his radical decision to rest all 10 outfield players from the
victory against Spurs four days
earlier,
Mick McCarthy said he had some sympathy if fans were disappointed but hoped
they would understand his reasoning. So the question is: do they? Do Wolves
fans really not mind trooping up to Manchester on a cold, rainy night and
paying £40 or so to watch the reserves get trounced? And would they, as
McCarthy trusts will be the case, forgive everything if the club manages to
stay up at the end of the season?

Part of the reason for asking is that midway through the second half the away
fans struck up a chant of "We want our money back". In the press room
afterwards, opinion was divided about how this should be presented to news
desks. Clearly, a team sending out the stiffs to lose 3-0 to Manchester
United and being attacked
by their own supporters for offering poor value for money makes a good story,
one that virtually writes its own headline. Yet it was not at all clear the
Wolves fans were attacking their own team.

They remained good humoured all night and seemed to enjoy themselves despite
the disappointment, mocking the United support, predicting the locals would
soon be following Chelsea or Manchester City, and proudly proclaiming they
supported their local team. Even at the end they were singing both the team's
name and McCarthy's, so it was hard to say they were angry or even discontented.

I actually thought the "We want our money back" chants were ironically aimed at
United, because neither the Old Trafford atmosphere nor the home performance
were anything to write home about and the away supporters had just been
chanting "What a waste of money" at the mostly unimpressive Dimitar Berbatov.
While it was worth mentioning, it was not necessarily a case of Angry Wolves
Fans Turn On McCarthy, even though that story was clearly there to be written.

One imagines angry Wolves fans will soon be turning on McCarthy if anything
goes wrong on Sunday against Burnley, the "winnable" fixture for which the
manager is saving his senior players, though if I am wrong and supporters were
genuinely annoyed at Old Trafford please write in and let me know. All I can
say is it didn't sound like it.

A crowd of more than 73,000, paying the sort of prices Premier
League grounds charge these
days, certainly has a right to be annoyed when what looks like an intriguing
fixture - bearing in mind Wolves' sensational result at the weekend - turns
into a meaningless reserve match devoid of any excitement or interest. In the
old days there used to be firm rules about this sort of thing, both to protect
the interests of paying spectators and to keep the competition honest so that
Chelsea or Arsenal, say, could not complain United were given the points too
easily.

McCarthy said he didn't hear any objections from United when he gamely but
unwisely gave Chelsea an easy victory by attempting to play 3-5-2 against them,
though that is not really the point. Wolves are at Arsenal in April next year,
at a stage of the season when they are likely to be fighting for every point
and unlikely to be picking their matches. Should McCarthy's players battle for
a draw at the Emirates, for example, and those two dropped points make the
difference between Arsenal finishing inside or outside the top four, what
Wolves did at Old Trafford will not be easily forgiven in London.

A team's levels of energy and application vary throughout the season in
response to the exact challenge at hand, everyone understands that. But it
still ought to be recognisable as the same team, even if listless one week and
motivated the next. Ten changes is just too many, especially after such a
splendid win on Saturday.

The trouble is that the old rules were formulated in the days when squads were
considerably smaller and everyone knew to within a position or two what
comprised each club's best team. Younger readers may find this hard to imagine,
but in the dim and distant past football supporters could not only rhyme off
the names of their own club's first team, they could do so for most of the rest
of the division as well. So you knew when you were being short changed.

You might be disappointed on occasion if United turned up without George Best
or Liverpool without John Barnes, but you would be familiar with the deputies.
If teams turned up with half a dozen or more players you had never heard of
they would be in trouble, because they would literally be playing their
reserves, and reserves in the old day were not potential substitutes but a
lower level of competition altogether.

[NSWolves] From yesterdays Guardian

2009-12-16 Thread Parkes Jim - Sydney-MHA
SHEEP IN WOLVES CLOTHING

Going by the way some people have been moaning about the reserve side fielded
by Wolves at Old Trafford last night, you could be forgiven for thinking Mick
McCarthy had driven an empty minibus around the streets of Wolverhampton
yesterday afternoon and asked the first 11 able-bodied men he encountered if
they fancied playing football against Manchester United.

Strange as it may seem, those men that eventually lost 3-0 are all highly-paid
professional footballers who have actually played the game before, often to a
standard high enough to earn them inclusion in the senior squad of a club
kicking around the lower reaches of the Premier League. Nevertheless, McCarthy
has been roundly booed and hissed for sending out an unrecognisable team that
had absolutely no chance of getting a result against the champions, mainly by
myopic Wolves supporters and pundits who have swooned like Victorian ladies
because they think he was duty-bound to send out a more recognisable side that
had absolutely no chance of getting a result against the champions.

The moaning of Wolves fans who've been complaining about wasting money
travelling to support their "reserves" has been particularly revealing,
suggesting that many of them think so little of their club they'd have
cancelled plans to travel if they'd known their side would comprise of players
who needed their support more than the usual first-teamers. When all's said and
done, surely cheering on one group of players in orange shirts as they get
hammered at the Theatre of Dreams is much the same as cheering on another?

McCarthy has been typically bullish in defence of his team selection, stating
that eggheaded boffins wearing white coats and thick glasses conducted tests
which showed his first-choice players were all knackered after beating Spurs at
the weekend and needed to be rested ahead of next weekend's much more winnable
match against Burnley. "What you saw tonight was the best team we had
available," he harrumphed. "I've got 21 players to choose from, that was my
first team."

Possibly aghast that their brand will be devalued if managers of other
bottom-feeders follow McCarthy's lead, the Premier League has demanded he
elaborate. "The Premier League board have written to Wolverhampton Wanderers to
request their observations in relation to the team fielded in their League
fixture against Manchester United," droned a statement that was hopefully
written by the well-fed blazer with the shiniest buttons and the most expensive
pen. "Once the observations are received the Board will decide whether any
further action is warranted."

As judging what constitutes the best available side for a top-flight club is
entirely subjective and probably not best done by a middle-aged man with a bad
comb-over in a London office, this statement sounds like so much hot air and
sabre-rattling. The Premier League board would probably be better served
considering how it's let the gap between the haves and have-nots in the "the
best league in the world" widen to such an extent that managers of teams at the
bottom have taken to waving the white flag against top teams before a ball has
been kicked, in an effort to guarantee long-term survival.

Should Wolves beat Burnley, McCarthy will be vindicated in his decision to go
about his job in the right way by examining the big picture and making a
difficult decision in the best interests of his club. Even if they lose, he can
still argue that he did what was best. But come season's end, if Chelsea or
Manchester United field their U-11s against a team Wolves desperately need to
lose to stay up, here's hoping he doesn't turn hypocrite and bleat incessantly
about the terrible injustice of it all.

An impressive turn out of 5 at last night's gathering. Hopefully with a few

By the way, Elliott's new Anglo / Brazilian company "Wolf Insulation" are well
worth a shout for your roof insulation requirements, special discounts for

Definitely 100% meeting at the Hotel Northbridge on the Friday before the game,

According to the E&S, Wolves had the best away following in the Championship

Don't think we can beat that in Perth.

In my opinion his range of passing and the accuracy is still second to none and
he definitely retired from the England scene way too early.. Surely he'd
rather play every week for us than only coming on every second game as a sub
for Man U? He's a very quiet and private person though so he probably wouldn't
have a great deal of influence in the dressing room but he would definitely
show our young blokes what it takes to be the model professional footballer.

the rumour was about Nicky Butt, not Paul Scholes. I would move back to
England for 12 months just to see Scholesy run around in a Wolves shirt. The

However, the chances of us getting Scholes or anyone of that quality are

Hi Jim,

So the trip is on?! nice one, will be great to see you again, it's been a
while... you know you are welcome to stay at ours if u want, but fully
understand if you want to stay with mates, can't quite fit in 9 -10 blokes,
don't think the girlfriend would understand!! :) you will have to come over for
dinner or something one of the nights if your here for a few days, let me know
your plans if u don't mind... gotta at least fit a curry in!! & a belly full of
beer at the game of course!! (goes without saying really)

I'll touch base with one of my mates re: tix as he usually goes in the shed
section which is a good laugh, but we'll def meet up before game & after!! I
know a few pubs around by the ground also so will drag you there if that's
ok??... when do u need to know by for tix?

your mate about sums up Citigate really, it's not too bad a hotel (not flash
either), used to be pretty crappy but they have been doing a fair bit of work
on it lately, rooms etc have been refurbed, & I think they are ok. location is
not too bad either you can walk into city in about 5mins fairly close to a few
pubs also as u would expect... we have our quarterly updates down there in one
of the function rooms... it's a bit dated down in the reception area, but if
it's somewhere to use as a base it will be fine.. just looking at their website
its $155 / night, not to bad as it is pretty central.

Anyway hope that helps... Don't forget let us know your plans!!!

Afternoon all,

I have just had another update from Perth Glory regarding tickets for the
Wolves match.

They have a section of the stadium allocated for travelling Wolves fans and at
this stage they have reserved 40 tickets for our group in that section,
although more can be assigned to us if needed (we currently have 33 people
confirmed).

Also, we have had some questions about the quality/standard of the Citigate
Hotel, as it has historically been a bit of a dump. However, the hotel was
taken over by Mirvac Hotels last year and since late August 2008 has been
undergoing a major $9m refurbishment to bring it up to 4 star quality. Every
room in the hotel has been stripped and re-furnished with modern up-to-date
facilities (eg flat screen tv's, new beds and furniture) and the bars and
restaurant have also been gutted and re-designed. All interior work has been
completed and they are currently finishing off the exterior painting. The
hotel manager acknowledged the poor quality of the hotel prior to their
acquisition last year but has assured me that the remaining external painting
will be finished by the time we arrive. Hopefully that eases any concerns that
people had about the hotel.

As always, I'll keep you posted as things progress.

[NSWolves] New sponsor for Wolves

2009-04-01 Thread Parkes Jim - Sydney-MHA
New sponsors welcomed to Wolves
Can't see video? Update Adobe Flash

Wolves are celebrating a stunning commercial triumph by landing a seven-figure
deal with a major online betting company for shirt sponsorship.

The promotion-chasing club are linking up with Sportingbet.com in June with the
biggest sponsorship deal in the club's history, worth more than £1million over
the next two seasons.

The agreement, which will be worth even more to the Championship leaders if
they go on to secure Premier League football next season, flies in the face of
football's desperate struggle to land sponsors in the current economic climate.

It ends the club's five-year shirt sponsorship by consultancy firm Chaucer,
although they will remain commercially involved at Molineux where the company's
founder and chief executive Bob Laslett retains a seat on the board.

But the new agreement with the multi-national betting company is being hailed

Ok, I have just spoken to Perth Glory and have been given the contact details
for a lady who is looking after the proposed Wolves visit. From the discussion
I had with the head of their Media & Marketing, it sounds like they are getting
organised early and they have already fielded calls from UK supporter clubs
wanting tickets etc. They said the interest has been fantastic and that on
current plans Wolves are going to be there for approximately 12 days and they
are hoping to run supporter days, meet the players, dinners etc. and are also
considering putting together a package of events for people travelling long
distances to get there (including East Coast). At this stage they are looking
at having the Glory match on or around the 10th July.

I am happy to start putting together a list of people who are interested in

Glory to face Wolves
26/03/2009 11:53 AM
Sportal

Perth Glory has pulled off a pre-season coup with the club set to take on
four-time FA Cup winner Wolverhampton Wanderers at Members Equity Stadium in
July.

Wolves currently sit top of the Championship and are almost certain to re-join
the English Premier League next season after a six-year absence.

Perth fought off stiff competition from clubs on the east coast to bring the
English club to Western Australia in an exclusive deal that will see them play
only on the west coast.

Glory coach Dave Mitchell, who has a strong relationship with Wolves manager
Mick McCarthy, was instrumental in negotiations and is predicting a cracking
match.

"I have no doubt that it will be a hard fought game but played in the right
spirit," Mitchell said.

"They're well managed by Mick McCarthy who is a no nonsense bloke. I know him
well and we've kept in touch so it'll be great to come up against him."

"I've told Mick about Perth, what a great place it is and the strength of
support for football in this town."

"There will be plenty of opportunities for local football supporters to take
part in activities throughout the week and we're very much looking forward to
welcoming Wolves to Western Australia."

It will be the first time in a decade that a top level European club has played
the Glory, and Perth Deputy Chairman Lui Giuliani said it is the start of many
new initiatives that Chairman and owner Tony Sage has committed to implementing
this season and beyond.

"This is a watershed moment in Perth Glory's A-League history," Giuliani said.

"Perth Glory is committed to winning on and off the field and this is one of
many successful opportunities that we're set to announce in the coming months."

"Our ability to bring Wolves to Perth is a true indication of Tony Sage's
commitment to Perth Glory and the West Australian community. He has
underwritten the tour to ensure that Glory receives a significant kick start
into a new and exciting era."

"We've said we're committed to action and making things happen and this is a
wonderful start."

The date for the match is not yet confirmed but Giuliani is hoping to secure
more international friendlies in WA during the pre-season.

Fearing For Future Of Championship...
Posted 11/03/09 16:54
EmailPrintSave

Top plays bottom in the Championship this Saturday and yet only an ignorant
fool would waste any money on the 1/2 shot of a home win for Wolves against a
Charlton side adrift at the bottom. Twenty-two places may separate the two
teams but this is the Championship, the table means bugger all - all teams are
created equal. Equally poor, that is.
The Premier League form table (taking in the last eight games) has Manchester
United, Chelsea and Arsenal at its summit. The Championship equivalent shows
that teams currently 17th, 13th and 16th are the current in-form sides -
Watford, Doncaster and Derby are outplaying and outpointing the
expensively-assembled sides in the running for promotion.
What does this tell us? That teams nearer the bottom are battling harder to
stay in the division than the likes of Wolves and Birmingham are fighting to
get out? That the proximity of the Premier League holy grail has made those at
the top nervous? Or that every team is much of a muchness in a division getting
worse every year?
I'd argue the latter. This is my fifth season covering Championship football
week in, week out for a national newspaper and as a neutral, the entertainment
factor is diminishing by the year. Most of the football is unbelievably poor
and I'm often left wondering whether they are actually playing the same game by
the same rules as we see in the Premier League.
Those of you who catch the occasional ten minutes of Championship football on
ITV on a Sunday morning can point to moments of magic caught by the TV cameras,
but a skilful editor could make my own lower-league women's game look thrilling
in a two-minute slot - every game has a wonder goal, a couple of fingertip
saves and a handful of crucial tackles - but in reality, you wouldn't want to
watch it for 90 minutes unless you were a) related to someone involved or b) a
bit mental.
Those of you who are fans of Championship sides may also argue the point, but
it's your team, you're supposed to love it. I would happily watch Huddersfield
Town every week, but I can't argue that League One is anything but an even more
agricultural version of the Championship, and were I to be gifted tickets to
any game in the country this weekend I would choose the one at Old Trafford
rather than the one at Prenton Park. It's not disloyalty, it's appreciation of
good football.
Last weekend I saw the league leaders at Hillsborough. The Owls were awful and
yet Wolves managed a grand total of one shot on target. That proved to be
enough in an awfully scrappy game, but is this really all that should be
expected of a team with aspirations to play at the highest level.
You can point to Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and particularly to Michael Kightly but I
would point you in the direction of George Friend and David Edwards. As one
journalist who regularly covers Wolves said on Saturday, 'What does David
Edwards actually do?' Lord knows, but he and several of his teammates are not
good enough to do it in the Premier League.
Birmingham are even worse, and I fully expect the in-form Doncaster to play
them off the park on Saturday. They may not win - as the Blues have a habit of
picking up points despite playing some gut-wrenchingly poor football - but the
silently-spoken Sean O'Driscoll's side will undoubtedly play the better
football.
Reading are better, but not a patch on the team that went up three years ago
that was blessed with neatness allied with pace, while performances from
Cardiff, Swansea and Burnley have entertained this season. But the poor,
scrappy games far outnumber those with any real quality, and that ratio is
getting worse every year.
You might argue that the quality of the football is irrevelant and that the
prize of Premier League football is worth the sacrifice of entertainment. But
that is a shortsighted approach when clubs are trying to attract a new
generation of fans, who will be reluctant to stump up £25 for an adult ticket
to 90 minutes of 'how can a professional footballer fail to clear the first man
with a corner?'
My nephew has a season ticket for Huddersfield Town but prefers to be at home
playing on his DS while wearing his Liverpool shirt. It's impossible to
convince him or his friends that lower-league football is worth watching
because they can see otherwise with their own eyes. I can imagine that fans of
Preston or Watford are facing the same problems with their children.

[NSWolves] Re: Histon and broke

2008-11-30 Thread Parkes Jim - Sydney-MHA

There are those who would tell you that
football has lost its capacity to surprise.
It has become a cliché that money has taken the soul from the game, not to
mention deprived it of that most crucial element of any
sport: the unexpected. And, in a world where
pundits and fans alike are cock-a-hoop at the idea that Aston Villa might, just
might, pip Arsenal to fourth spot in the Premier League, it's difficult to
propose a more optimistic vision. Thank God, then, for Histon.

For the uninitiated Histon are probably the most over-achieving side since
Pele, Bobby Moore and Michael Caine led a team of injured and malnourished PoWs
to victory over a crack German XI.

In 1996, Histon FC were languishing in the Eastern Counties League Division
One, six tiers below the football league. Which is fair enough because Histon
is a village of 4,500 people a few miles north of historic Cambridge. But five
promotions in 10 years have taken the club to the heady heights of the Blue
Square Premier League,
where Histon now rub shoulders with the likes of Wrexham, York City, Oxford
United and local rivals Cambridge United. It's an extraordinary achievement by
any standards, but what's truly impressive is that today Histon sit top of the
division with a game in hand, having won seven games in a row.

With every passing week, the prospect of league football at the Glassworld
Stadium becomes a more tantalising possibility. On Saturday, Histon (average
attendance 800-odd) faced Oxford United (average attendance 4,000-plus) and
trounced them 5-2.

This Sunday lunchtime, though, their league standing will be the last thing on
the minds of their players, staff and fans. Histon have bigger fish to fry.
It's the second round of the FA Cup,
and The Stutes (they used to be Histon Institute) have a plum home tie against
Leeds United, who were
Champions League semi-finalists in Valencia in 2001 when Histon were
entertaining the likes of Chatham Town in the Southern League (Eastern
Division). The gap has narrowed since, but it's still a David versus Goliath
match-up sufficient to tempt the ITV cameras to cover the contest live. For
those looking to write off the chances of Histon's part-timers against the
(albeit diminished) might of Leeds, it is worth noting that Histon overcame
League One opposition, in
the form of Swindon Town, in the first round.

>From Friday's Guardian:

It is a measure of the beguiling informality of non-league football that a
request to interview Steve Fallon, Histon's manager, in the week of the biggest
game in the club's history, is met with a cheery "Yeah, I'll get his number -
tell him I gave it to you." When I call, Fallon can't talk. Typical football
manager you might say, playing games with the press. Well no, he's doing his
day job, teaching PE at a local school.

While Fallon combines his managerial role with a PE job and a soccer skills
coaching business, his players include a tennis coach, a carpenter, a roofer
and the obligatory postman. There's always a postman. "It's true," laughs
Fallon when he calls back. "We've got a postie of our own."

After the Swindon victory, Fallon told The Sun that when he became manager in
1999, there used to be 50 people at Histon on matchdays, including players and
staff. I congratulate him on turning the club's fortunes around, a claim he
immediately disputes. "What's changed it is the organisation that [chairman]
Gareth Baldwin has set up from day one, behind the scenes. Without a
professional setup, you'll get nowhere. That has made it possible to do what we
do on the pitch."

Fallon is too modest. Baldwin may have worked wonders at the club, but it is he
who is topping the table with a side that is paid considerably less than many
in the Blue Square Premier. "We're only part-time," added Fallon. "The players
are on OK money for part-time, but they're not on as much as the full-time
players in this league. There are the big clubs in this league, and we're
nowhere near them."

With such financial constraints, was there no thought given to playing Sunday's
game in a bigger ground, at the expense of home advantage? "Not at all. I don't
think you can do that to your supporters. We want Leeds supporters coming to
our ground. We've got our 1,000 loyal supporters who come week-in, week-out,
who deserve to see us play Leeds at our own ground. And the other three
thousand odd who come to the game, we want them to like the experience and come
back."

There are those who suggest that Histon owe their lofty position to a muscular,
route-one game (the club's coach, John Beck, once almost got Cambridge United
into the Premier League playing a similar way).
