I took a look at those templates [0] -- nice work.

Would you mind translating your comments into English? That would help
others (including me) a lot! Tia :-)

Take a look at
http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/cont-eni.pdf --> chapter 5

You want to pick a font family which has entire support for mathematical
glyphs like for example
 - Computer Modern Roman or
 - Lucia Bright

  There's not much to it, actually. There are some space characters in
Unicode, and we should handle them as much Unicode-compliantly as
possible; and there are some particular typographic conventions on top
of that, for each language. It's easy to come up with a simple scheme
to support both, and I've already outlined it on a different
mailing-list (http://tug.org/pipermail/xetex/2008-February/008529.html).
The problem is to decide how much of the users' old typing habits we
want to take in account (and, Olivier, another message by me in the same
thread addresses the exact same issues you were raising a few days ago:
http://tug.org/pipermail/xetex/2008-February/008533.html).

  I can discuss that with you at BachoTeX, Hans. It's best done around
a beer or two, anyway ;-)

Now that I'm fairly happy with the citation and basic styling of my template

styling of it.

So, what I'd like to know is which fonts do you suggest for academic works and
what are the basic styling tips for such works?

Interesting idea, thank you very much!

Never heard about sectionworld before - ConTeXt's sources still

I just managed to add outputting the author (not only in the ToC)...

Could you please show me how to set also the header to "Author: Title"?

I just did an update to ConTeXt 2008.04.15 21:21 and it works perfectly
for my example above. But if you use abbreviations the 'see ...' entry in
the registers shows the value between the brackets in the abbreviation
definition. Here is a small example:

\definesynonyms [abbreviation] [abbreviations][\infull]
\setupsynonyms [abbreviation]
\abbreviation [GCc] {\sc gcc} {GNU C Compiler}
\abbreviation [GNU] {\sc gnu} {{\sc gnu'}s Not Unix}

\starttext
\index{Software}Software
\seeindex{Apache}{Software}Apache
\index[GCC]{\GCc}\GCc\
\seeindex[GNU C Compiler]{\GNU\ C Compiler}{\GCc}\GNU\ C Compiler

\placeindex

\stoptext

I defined the GCc abbreviation with small c on purpose to demonstrate
that 'GCc' shows up in the register instead of {\sc gcc}.

I tried to look at the file core-reg.lua and thought that the error has
to be at

if vv[1] == 'e' then
-- format reference pagespec realpage
flush(template.page:format(class,",",vv[4],vv[5],vv[3]))
elseif vv[1] == 's' then
flush(template.see:format(class,",",vv[5],vv[3]))

but as I know nothing about Lua I gave up pretty soon.

Drazen

Everything I read below says there should be a 'plain.mem'
in the folder where you ran theat file in. If there
really really isn't, then my only advise to you is to buy
a less thieving operating system, as it seems this one steals

Hi Hans,

Dank u!

That was a quick answer.

Also, thanks a lot for your software, and for making it free. You have
made true a lot of little perversions of mine which usually cost me
sweat and blood with latex (no offense please, your work is great,
this is just intented to be a nice little joke)

It's amazing to see how I get the same result with context in one line
(or even one command) when I needed something like 20 lines or so with
latex!

You have gained a new ardent context fan.

it's just that we don't want confusion .. a context user expects a
myway/yourway to be a kind of manual

so, if you use one of the reserved titles, then it should preferaby be a
kind of manual thing; often these end up on the garden or alongside modules

i have no problem if you create a document using another title

at the top of your document you can change the title using \setvariables
so there is no real reason for a copy

Great to hear.
Sorry but I don't understand well your last sentence : « there are
probably more space
related chars that needs treatment then ».
You want to know if there's other rules related to spaces in french typography ?
One of the most complicated for me is the « — » because the nbsp is a
« espace justifiante insécable » — don't know how to say this in
English — when we use it as parentheses, a regular nbps for dialog :
— Hello,
— Hello, how are you ?
and sometime… nothing. So I think we have to deal with this « by hand ».

Bus I'm sure about the rules for « : », « ; », « ? »,  « ! », "«" and
"»". And if I remember well, in Latex the space is 0.16667, not 0.25.

If you want, I can contact french people who know the rules, on a
typography mailing list.

Thank's for trying to solve the french strange behaviours.
Olivier.

[NTG-context] using mag and "myway"

2008-04-15 Thread Pau
Hi,

I am worried because I would like to use mag-01 to write a document and
then upload it to the arxiv.org. Of course, I have a title for the document and
I would like to use it instead of having "My Way" written in the front page
(which nobody would understand)

I see that

-
%C This module is part of the \CONTEXT\ macro||package and is
%C therefore copyrighted by \PRAGMA. See mreadme.pdf for
%C details.
-

I found this file on the net. at

www.tug.org/teTeX/tetex-texmfdist/doc/context/base/mreadme.pdf

I see that it is (basically?) GPL.

Ok... now, in mag-01 I read that:

% This style is used for producing explanationary documents.
% Don't misuse it for other purposes, since it may confuse
% users. Don't change the title either, since it provides a
% way to categorize documents. Numbers are disabled in
% instances produced outside PRAGMA ADE.

"Don't change the title either"

?!?!

and

% These are reserved for PRAGMA-ADE, don't use them yourself!

% \setvariables[magazine][main=Tricky]
% \setvariables[magazine][main=Update]
% \setvariables[magazine][main=HOWTO]

% \setvariables[magazine][main=This Way]  % preludes to a/the manual
% \setvariables[magazine][main=A Better Way] % dirty versus clean
% \setvariables[magazine][main=No Way]% how users should not do
% it
% \setvariables[magazine][main=Your Way] % how users do it
% \setvariables[magazine][main=My Way]% how users do it
% \setvariables[magazine][main=Our Way] % how we do things at
% pragma
% \setvariables[magazine][main=Their Way] % how to do latex things
% in context

What does this mean? Am I free to use the style but forced to write
"My Way" on the top of
it? Cannot I modify mag-01.tex, rename it to something which do not
lead to confusion (say "JourDiffTitle.tex") and -of course leaving the
comments there- use it as I want?

Are the example tex files under the gpl or cannot one modify them?

I am asking to avoid posterior problems.

Thanks,

Pau

in mkiv it does indeed; only mkii has language specifics

For LaTeX ask the LaTeX team. Maybe they have realized that luatex

it's no problem to add avariant that treats nospace, space, nbsp as
equel, and removes in that case the space/nbsp but if we support such a
thing, we need a better specification; there are probably more space
related chars that needs treatment then

The actual problem has nothing to do with \setcharacterspacing. You can
replace this line by "\setupitemize[symbol=2]" or similar.

And why "active :"? I thought, that \setcharacterspacing[frenchpunctuation]
uses some lua-magic instead of active characters?

No.
There is neither a 'plain.fmt' nor a 'plain.mem'!

I have searched in the local directory, where it should be.
It is not in 'D:\context\tex\texmf-mswin\web2c' where format-files
usally exist.
It is not in the cache.

I run this:
---
\enableregime[utf-8]
\starttext
% start low-level
\startlua
local function finder(name, mode, ftype)
 if mode=="w" then
 return name
 else
 return kpse.find_file(name,ftype)
 end
end
mp = mplib.new ( {
 hash_size = 10,
 main_memory = 200,
 param_size = 10,
 find_file = finder,
 ini_version = true
} )
if mp then
 res = mp:execute("plain")
 print(table.serialize(res))
 res = mp:finish()
 print(table.serialize(res))
end
\stoplua
% stop low-level
\stoptext
---

with the following output:

Indeed. And I think for several reasons:
- I believed, that texexec --module does not execute commands without a
 "%D" at the beginning of the line
- usually, space in the beginning of the line is ignored
- I've found another similar case:

%D \module[file=t-test]
\appendtoks \abc \to \everystarttext

fails with:

This is realted to the bug with \filename (see my post yesterday). As a
temporary solution, add this to the top of your module (at least works in
this case, haven't tested with the french module).

%M \unexpanded\def\filename#1{{\\tttf\hyphenatedurl{#1}}}

pdftex, xetex, luatex: engines

context mkii: pdftex/xetex
context mkiv: luatex

just see mkiv as a next version; the reason for calling it mkiv is that
context never had fundamental versions, like latex (original, 2e, 3)

in order to prevent users asking "hey, there will be latex 3, when will
there be acontext 3" i skipped the 3 and went for the 4 ...

... so now everyone knows why context mkiv is called mkiv; and yes, i

will be a context mkvii -)

Of course I will remain a Muse fanboy as well. Muse for my website,

ConTeXt for a book and tech papers I am going to write ...

This is not always the case, to be honest. Mostly, you are lucky that
luatex bugs are a top priority right now. Some of my bib module
bugs are have been open for years, I am ashamed to admit.

nope, I do not get it especially for the latex part. What about this:

So where do LaTeX and MkIV fit into this?

Which tells me exactly nothing :-) Actually to rephrase what I meant and
to what it boils down:

If someone could shed some light onto this, I would be very thankful ...

[NTG-context] Unable to generate luatex formats

2008-04-15 Thread Michael Green
[A] My experience is similar to Hans van der Meer's (quoted below).

luatools --generate does what I think it's supposed to.

luatools luat-env.lua returns a blank line.

[B] I followed Thomas Schmitz's instructions and used the
source .luatex method, for what it's worth.

http://archive.contextgarden.net/message/
20071002.175335.21873a03.en.html

.luatex contains:

export TEXMFCACHE="/tmp"
export TEXMFCNF="/usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf/web2c"
export TEXMF="{/Users/michaelgreen/.texlive2007/texmf-config,/Users/
michaelgreen/.texlive2007/texmf-var,/Users/michaelgreen/Library/
texmf,/usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-config,!!/usr/local/texlive/2007/
texmf-var,/usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf,/usr/local/texlive/2007/../
texmf-local,!!/usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-dist}"
export LUAINPUTS="{/usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/context/base,/
usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-dist/scripts/context/lua,/usr/local/
texlive/texmf-local/scripts/context/lua}"

[C] Is there a chance that this is a permissions issue? I had to make
luatools.lua executable by hand.

None of the other files in that directory are executable, where
'that' directory is:

  /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/scripts/context/lua

I am only teasing.

I love context, and have been using it for years now on linux. But I
only get to use it intermittently, and only rarely get involved with
the installation itself...

Some of the things that I use \placetitle for:

* Writing academic papers. Currenly, I have a macro that I use like this:

\article
[title ={...},
 author={...},
publication={...},% This just goes to pdf subtitle
date={...},
bottom={...}, %text placed at page bottom,
  %usually current revision number
thanks={...}, %placed on the footer of the first page
]

\startabstract
...
\stopabstract

\startkeywords

\stopkeywords

The abstract environment places a head ("Abstract") followed by its
content. The formatting depends on whether it is a journal article, or a
conference article.

keyword also places a head followed by its content.

Currently, what I have is that \article places all its contents, and so do
abstract and keyword. So, I do not have to store anything.

* TUGBoat articles: This uses a style file originally by Hans, which I
have modified considerably, but still uses the same interface.

This uses

\setvariables
[tugboat]
[title={...},
 author={...},
 address={...},
 email={...},
 year={...},
 volume={..},
 number={...},
 page={...}]

The title and the author go to the document title. The address and email
go at the end of the article. The year, volume, number, and page go to the
header and footer of the article.

The rest of the article is somethng like

\starttext
\startArticle

\startAbstract

\stopAbstract
...

\stopArticle
\stoptext

This structure is the reason I think something like \setuptitle (or
\setupdocumenttitle) is needed.

* Practex journal, which uses

http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Modules/Pracjourn

* My Ways which use

http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Modules/MyWay

* and finally Maps which use

http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Modules/Maps

Notice that almost all of them so similar things, but in slightly
different manner. What I wish for is a common interface, and I really like
your idea of \setuptitle. In fact, I think that something like that should
be part of the core.

The module does not need to take care of all the formatting requirements:
just provide the interface. For a particular publications, the module for
that publication can modify the \placetitle command to do what they want.
With this, the user documentation can just say that use

\setuptitle[title=...,author=..., date=] %and maybe setups={...}

So, we will have a consistent user inteferface for all documents.

> What should we do with the abstract, did it depend on the document title ...

In general, the formatting of the abstract will depend on the kind of the
document. Just need something like

\definetitlesubstructure% or something more appropriate
   [abstract]
   [headtext={Abstract},
headstyle=bold,
headcolor=blue,
headalign=middle,
inbetween=\blank,%between the head and the body
style=small, %for the contents
color=black, %for the contents
   ]

This should define a command that captures its contents, and provides a
command \placetitlesubstructure[abstract].

Similarly, we can define

\definetitlesubstructure
   [keywords]
   []

Then, \placetitlesubstructure[abstract] and
\placetitlesubstracutre[keywords] and go in the after={...} key of
\setuptitle.

As I said before, the module just needs to collect the information, and
provide one or two simple styles. Once the information is collected, it is
easy to use other keys (e.g. thanks key in my first case) and let the user
define a setups that take of how to handle those keys.

And I suspect these two facts are related.. :)

Nevertheless, I have used both and find the linux environment better
in general. Everything is "there" and my distribution (debian) takes
care of things. Sometimes I am impatient and want to "experiment" with
the latest and greatest, bypassing the distributions packaging
system. Then I get into trouble.

the upcoming release will

actually nothin gis really broken, it's just that supp-mps is no longer

[NTG-context] Architecture Sketch

2008-04-15 Thread Suno Ano
hi folks,
I am new to ConTeXt. I had been a TeXinfo, Muse and LaTeX boy so far.
Now that I am into ConTeXt for the 2nd day it came to my attention that
there is for eample MkIV, luatex etc.

How do they fit together? Is there some sort of architecure chart
somewhere so newbies can get a hold within a few seconds?

Secondly, now that it seems MkIV is the new star will all my ConTeXt
knowledge be obsolete once luatex is going to be used? (Maybe I am just
making a fool out of myself even asking this but then I am totally new
to this whole subject so ...)

What I want is to write documents (papers, manual, theses, etc.) with
ConTeXt. So, is the time I am going to invest into learning and toying
around with ConTeXt a secure investment of my time or not i.e. ConTeXt
will be phased out or something (again, asking this might actually make
me look goofy :-)

tia for enlightening me!

Not true. This code used to work, it DID WORK. But now it gives an

Mojca helped debugging this, and there is a patch in the luatex
repository that should fix it. As Hans said already, you can expect
a new luatex binary and context release later this week.

[NTG-context] Problem to save data font in cache

2008-04-15 Thread Wolfgang Schuster
Hi,

I tried to use the cwTeX fonts with MkIV and I can use them but ConTeXt is not
able to save the font data and read the font for every run, this did
work but it takes
quiet some time to do this.

A attached the result from the terminal and the log file.

The font are available from the following page:
http://cle.linux.org.tw/fonts/cwttf/baseline/

My example document is:

% engine=luatex

\definefont[cwheib][file:cwheib*default at 12pt]

\starttext
\cwheib cwTeXHeiBold
\stoptext

Mojca,

I followed the instructions here, where applicable for debian sid:

Then the instruction in the README.MarkIV that appeared in the pckage
documentation directory (appended to end of post).

However I have been using context for years, and may well have messed
something up! It seems to work OK with my "normal" documents. Except I
notice \usemodule[gnuplot] does not work.

README.luatex
=

Mark IV is the name of the LuaTeX-aware part of ConTeXt; that is, when you
use ConTeXt over the LuaTeX engine instead of PDFTeX or XeTeX. You run it
with texexec --lua.

Currently the integration of Mark IV into Debian is not completely done,
especially because the details are currently worked out (see the dev-context
mailing list).

If you want to start using Mark IV the following the following few points
should get you started:

1) Right versions:
luatex >= 0.20.2
context >= 2007.12.20

2) environment variables and luatex-cache
   Mark IV ships its own implementation of file searching and doesn't
   use the ls-R databases, but luatex-cache. You have to tell luatools
   where to find texmf.cnf, and then generate the cache:
export TEXMFCNF=/usr/share/texmf/web2c
luatools --generate --verbose
   This will generate the luatex-cache in $HOME. If you want to put it
   somewhere else set (and export) the TEXMFCACHE variable (like
   export TEXMFCACHE=/tmp)

3) Generate a Mark IV format
   This is not integrated into the usual format building process, and
   probably will need some time to be worked out completely as the
   current fmtutil cannot cope with Mark IV formats. Call
luatools --ini --compile cont-en

4) Now you can try some simple document like (thanks to Arthur Reutenauer)
\starttext

\ctxlua{a = 1.5 ; b = 1.8 ; c = a*b ; tex.print(c) ;}
or the equivalent:
\startlua
a = 1.5
b = 1.8
c = a*b
tex.print(c)
\stoplua

You can also do more elaborate calculations with the lua math library:
\ctxlua{tex.print("$\string\\sqrt{2} = " .. math.sqrt(2) .. "$")}

\stoptext
  and run it with
texexec --lua filename.tex

I would say that the installation might be slightly broken, even if
only a few variables are missing. How exactly did you install LuaTeX
and latest ConTeXt?

> Setting TEXMF was missing from the instructions in debian...

This should not happen, but once you answer the question about how you
have installed it, it might become clearer.

Some time ago there was some problem on debian since Hans's lua
scripts were unable to parse TEXMFCNF (texmf.cnf) files properly, but
this might have been resolved in the meantime.

I've already tried this, but it does not work. But thanks to your remark,
I've finally found the reason: it's the space *before*
"\setcharacterspacing".

This works ok:

\startlanguagespecifics[fr]
\setcharacterspacing[frenchpunctuation]
\stoplanguagespecifics

Cheers, Peter

Somewhat unexpectedly, the space after [frenchpunctuation] is not
ignored (note: I am not saying it should). Can you try this?

   \startlanguagespecifics[fr]
 \setcharacterspacing[frenchpunctuation]%
   \stoplanguagespecifics

For the other readers: res itself can't really be "zero". It is either
a table, or nil. The actual return value is the status field in the
table, and that can vary from 0 (good run) to 3 (extremely bad run),
and you can end up with "nil" if you have invalid arguments.

> (I have temporary appended 'dump;' to plain.mp)

After the above, you should have plain.mem in the local directory.
You can try printing res.term or res.log or even
   print(table.serialize(res))
to check if what mp is doing.

> after that I produced 'plain.mem' executing
> 'texmfstart texexec --make plain'

I assume that will create a tex plain.fmt file. But even if it
does create a .mem file, you will not succeed unless you are using
"newmpost" from the mplib-alpha-0.40 distribution and the values
you sset up for hash_size, main_memory, and param_size in the loading
stage are identical to the values used by newmpost from texmf.cnf
during mem generation.

Best wishes, Taco

Hi Aditya,

could you use a few lines what do you expect from a placetitle/placetitlepage
command or a titlepage environment.

What should we do with the abstract, did it depend on the document title ...

ctxtools --update won't help you as you have some missing fonts (msam7.tfm).
http://packages.debian.org/etch/all/texlive-base/filelist claims that
the file should be present in texlive-base in Debian, so it's a bit
confusing.

Re: [NTG-context] Unable to generate luatex formats

2008-04-15 Thread Hans van der Meer
Same thing here. "luatools luat-env.lua" gives an empty line. After
"luatools --generate" again the same.
And I have TEXMFCNF and TEXMF defined in .bashrc
TEXMFCNF="/usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf/web2c"
TEXMF="{/Users/hans/TeX/texmf-private,/usr/local/texlive/texmf-
context,/usr/local/texlive/texmf-local,/usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf,/

dist,/usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-doc,/usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-
var}"

So there must be something else amiis.

aha indeed!

Setting TEXMF was missing from the instructions in debian... Or perhaps I
messed up my configuration in the past.

  luatools --ini --compile cont-en

works now.

I will start playing with it.

A quick try of the example snippet did not work (see dump at end of
message) but I will look into it more and try Mojcas advice re
ctxtools --update.

Thanks.

I just get a blank line printed. And I get the same if I feed it the name
of a random, non-existent file. Which is not encouraging...

>

This produces:

  LuaTools | skipping /texmf-local/web2c/texmf.cnf
  LuaTools | skipping /texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf
  LuaTools |
  LuaTools | runtime: 0.003 seconds

I then still get the same error unfortunately :(

ctxtools --update does several things:
a) download cont-tmf.zip
b) extract to texmf-local
c) generate formats

a) is safe, b) and c) might put thing to weird places (different
distros have different conventions). A rather safe thing to do is to
unzip cont-tmf.zip to a location that you trust to be OK. You can
unzip it to either
/usr/local/share/texmf/
or to .texlive (check if one exists) and then regenerate formats in
the "debian way". If you put files to /usr/local/share/texmf/, the
next, the next update (does it ever happen?) will update those files
(uninstall might possibly leave some files there if they were not
present in your previous installation). If you put context to your
local tree, you only need to make sure not to forget about it. If you
upgrade context with debian later, the tree in your home will have
precedence.

But in general there should be no problem updating some files on
debian. If you don't trust ctxtools, just do it manually.

You can also run rsync from minimals.contextgarden.net to update
context files instead of downloading and extracting the zip from
pragma.

Bus errors often point to code alignment errors, so it
could be that the same problem manifests on all 64-bit
platforms. But that is about the only hint I can give,
someone has to debug the application.

Both of you, can you check that

   luatools luat-env.lua

finds the file? If not, try running luatools --generate

I get a bus error on mac intel as well.

The most funny part is that one doesn't even notice that fact when
running ConTeXt. It seems to run normally, only no PDF file is
created.

Hi, I am getting a similar error on debian unstable.

Following the instructions in the debian README.MarkIV when I get to:

  luatools --ini --compile --verbose cont-en

I get the error

  ! LuaTeX error [string "luas[0]"]:1: attempt to call field 'luafilechunk' (a
nil value).

(full listing at end of mail).

I have not run the ctxtools --update since I m not sure if is
appropriate for debian...

Any ideas?

[file:bla 1.2.3]

may be problematic anyway (the space) so best try:

[file:bla1.2.3]

just remove spaces in names, which is what happens behind the screens too

the find function is needed

in context you can use

metapost.process('formatname',datastream)
