[NTG-context] How can I force ConTeXt to display my footnote on the same page as my foot note marker?

2024-07-27 Thread ai2472206007
Hi,

I have a document that contains a lot of footnotes.
Therefore, I used to separate the footnote number from the footnote text,
which would make the source file look more readable.

Therefore, I used a similar approach to 'CASE 1', but not 'CASE 2' ,
placing footnotes related to the previous paragraphs every few paragraphs.
But when I was generating a PDF,
 I found that the footnote didn't always appear on the same page as its
footnote number,
even though the footnote had very little text.

What can I do to get my idea to work?

Thanks for any suggestions.

 Muyik.

Hi Willi,

I was more interested in not attributing ConTeXt to other person than
fixing Wikipedia as first intention.

That being said, it surprises me that so (relatively) many LaTeX users
know ConTeXt only by name.
That's all relative, isn't it? I know that msword exists and have seen
it open but would be in trial and error mode as user. I simply never had
a need for it. And I only used latex for one document decades ago,
wrapped it into soem macros, and then moved on so basically I only know
it by name.

That said, one can recognize anything tex by the backslash and curly
braces (and editors etc highlighting helps). So I can recognize latex
(with 99% accuracy when no commands similar to context are used) but
then I'd need to buy and read a couple of few thousand page companions
to get a moderate complex document done. I'm sure that doesn't surprise
Willi.

Last context (and bacrhotex) meeting Harald played this 'can you
recognize this language' game with the audience. One has to be real old
(or curious and collecting languages) to be among the winners.

It's all about 'need to use something' and the definition of 'knowing'.
I can recognize a tree but name a few.

[NTG-context] correcting Wikipedia

2024-07-25 Thread Pablo Rodriguez via ntg-context
Dear list,

just by accident, I discovered that the English Wikipedia had attributed
ConTeXt to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Hagen (a German computer
science professor).

I corrected this info and also removed the internal links to that
article that belong to “our” Hans (Hagen).

Just in case the wording may be improved, I wrote (reprashing a previous
sentence and adding two links to pages with photo):

(Prof. Dr.) Hans Hagen is not to be confused with Hans Hagen, the author
of the ConTeXt macro package for the TeX typesetting system.[5]

[5] ConTeXt’s author comes from the Netherlands (he is a digital
typographer, no academic). In any case, German Hans Hagen and Dutch Hans
Hagen are clearly not the same individual.

Many thanks in advance,

Pablo

[NTG-context] How to hide any content?

2024-07-25 Thread Joel via ntg-context

I have a strange issue with some macros that are creating extraspaces between
paragraphs. Note these macros shouldn’t create anycontent, as they define
content that will be sent to registers andcontent that is used for page
references. Its more like invisibledata, perhaps the word is “metadata” and
other parts of thedocument need to know it and refer to it, but nothing should
berendered there.

 As best as I canunderstand, when ConTeXt sees one of these macros, it creates
avertical space after the paragraph, draws nothing, then createsanother
vertical space after that, before drawing the next paragraph,so the result is
something close to three lines of space. Whenappearing after a section title,
its also as if there is an emptyline, then blank space, then the first
paragraph of content appears.
Sample of what the rendered document looks like:

-
Section Title
.<--if the macro is placed here, a huge empty space after thesection title is
there

.<-- I’m using these dots to represent empty lines

Loremipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmodtempor

macro is placed here, still in the paragraph, it creates a break

.

I’ve analyzed themacros carefully, even rebuilt them. Yet, no matter my
attempts torecreate and rewrite the code from scratch, they always create
thisvertical space. They shouldn’t create any content, nor should anyevidence
of their existence be visible to readers.

I’ve tried formonths to find a way to hide these macros, rewriting the code
itselfmany times, as I can’t see any reason why its creating anything atall,
and also trying to find ways to hide the “blank” contentthat gets rendered:

\starteffect[hidden]\mymacro{}\stopeffect

\color[white]{\mymacro}

\setbox\scratchbox=\vbox{\mymacro}
\startnointerference\mymacro\stopnointerference
\inmargin{\mymacro}

Thesesolutions either entirely don’t remove the extra page break, orlead to the
actual content within breaking: for instance, if there’san \index{} entry
inside the macro, its page number won’t renderproperly in the end-of-document
index. Or if there’s a \reference,other code attempting to display the page
number just shows “page,??”.

Isthere a way to completely hide content, such that nothing at all isrendered
on the page and nothing occupies extra blank space, but thatdoesn’t brak
indexes, cross-references, registers, etc.?

Hi,

If you change

drawdot (0,0) withpen pencircle scaled 8pt withcolor red;

into

drawdot (6pt,6pt) withpen pencircle scaled 8pt withcolor red ;

you get what you want (at least for the red dot on the lower left corner).

Here 6pt = 2pt (with of the pen used for the frame) + 4pt (half the diameter of
the pen used for the dot).

Best regards: Otared

Thank you Wolfgang! I didn't know this detail, always considering this
distinction between different folders for font types. I did know,
however, that mtxrun now contains automatic routines with regard to
pointing to the %win%/fonts path.

the newly installed font with the following commands:

1) mtxrun --script cache --erase && mtxrun --generate
2) mtxrun --script fonts --reload
3) Search for a specific font:

mtxrun --script fonts --list --pattern=urbanist --all

Here is what I did (and it worked)

* clone the repo
* mkdir [context root]/tex/texmf-fonts/fonts/data/urbanist
* copy the *.otfs there
* mtxrun —generate
* fix 3 errors in your typescript (“name:” => “file:”)
* done

(for Hraban: mtxrun —scripts fonts —reload will run automatically if a font
cannot be found)

Here is one way to do it:

\startbuffer[dataset-1]
@Article{tag1,
    author = {A Author},
    title = {The title},
    year = {2024},
}
\stopbuffer

\startbuffer[dataset-2]
@Article{tag2,
    author = {B Author},
    title = {The second title},
    year = {2024},
}
\stopbuffer

\usebtxdataset[default][dataset-1.buffer]
\usebtxdataset[credits][dataset-2.buffer]

\usebtxdefinitions[aps]

\setupbtx[dataset=default]
\definebtxrendering[credits][aps][dataset=credits]

\starttext

\startsection[title=Test]

  Here is a fancy article \cite[tag1].

  Image credited to \cite[credits::tag2].

\stopsection

\startsection[title=References]
  \placelistofpublications
\stopsection

\startsection[title=Image credits]
  \placelistofpublications[credits]
\stopsection

\stoptext

If you want credits to have a separate numbering, use:

\definebtxrendering[credits][aps][dataset=credits,group=credits]

(all renderings with the same group share the same numbering).

[NTG-context] How to create a second bibliography?

2024-07-21 Thread Joel via ntg-context
My copy editor wants me to create a second bibliography for photo/illustration
references.
I'm using basic code to make a bibliography:
\usemodule[publ-imp-sbl]

\usebtxdataset[default][~/Commons/sources.bib]

\setupbtx[dataset=default]
\usebtxdefinitions[sbl]
\setupbtx[sbl]

\starttext  \input knuth
   \cite[authoryear]

    \startchapter[title=Bibliography]
            \placelistofpublications
        \stopchapter\stoptext

I know how to create custom lists and indexes, but not a bibliography list.

How do I point the image references to go to a different list, but still its a
bibliography?

[NTG-context] spreadsheet module

2024-07-20 Thread Henning Hraban Ramm
Hi, I checked the spreadsheet module for the first time (in my own
invoices I do everything in Lua and don’t need it).

In the attached example, I setup a decimal comma, as usual in German:
\setupspreadsheet[rechnung][
period={,}, comma={\,}, split=yes]

Unfortunately, this also replaces all dots in the text strings.

Is there a workaround (beside using \getspr in a “real” table)?

Apparently, \startrow or \startcell don’t understand the period setting.

A ha! You are correct; it turns out all the references are under "tree-sitter"
(hyphen included).

(I'm not familiar enough with the wiki to know if there's a way to include tags
with pages so that searches can more easily find things? Frex, adding
"treesitter" and "tree sitter" to the tree-sitter pages? We can always add a
keywords stanza or something to the body text of the page...)

In an attempt to make it easier to find, I've put references to the grammar I
came up with on the Text Editors wiki page as well as on specific wiki pages
for editors where I've been able to get support working.

(I'm taking a look at adding ConTeXt support to Zed, but all I'm getting for my
troubles right now is a massive memory leak.)

Hans provided me with a patch that allows
\enabledirectives[system.dumpfiles=json]

It will be in the next update, I guess.

I’m using it with the new tool "addtogit.py"
in https://codeberg.org/fiee/context-tools
to add all files that are necessary for a
ConTeXt job to the current git repository.

Of course I could have parsed the log file.

Thank you!

Now my downsampling bites me:

["foundname"]="…/img/m_k_i_v_Fenster_jpg_2ec2682ee73b38bbc98c6d1432bf1bcb.lowres.jpg",

I can disable it:

   ["filename"]="…/img/Fenster.jpg",
   ["foundname"]="…/img/Fenster.jpg",
   ["fullname"]="…/img/Fenster.jpg",
   ["usedmethod"]="direct",
  },

But images lack the "filetype" entry that other file types have, it
would have been useful. But checking the file extension is good enough
for my task.

were involved in making a PDF? Preferably only those outside of the
texmf trees, but I could filter that myself.

(With "latexmk -recorder somelatexfile" I get the file list as a .fls file.)

My goal is to commit all used images to my git repo, while I often have
a big collection of images that I didn’t use in the end and don’t need
in the repo.

[NTG-context] request for talk/article on writing modules

2024-07-19 Thread Henning Hraban Ramm

Hi wizards,
I’d really appreciate an introduction “how to write a ConTeXt module” at
the meeting and in the next journal.

* How does this namespace and setup stuff work?
* When does it make sense to use variables, macros or parameters?
* Should I use the namespace for internally used MP graphics,
environments, buffers etc.?

I guess I can figure out most of it on my own, but I think we should
have some easily understandable documentation.

Or do we already have something and I didn’t find it?

I can contribute the part about distribution.

Best, Hraban

tex has not really a concept of space and in math even less but in
luametatex we carry around some more info so there we can actually plug
into that and act upon it, meaning that in

meaning

  atom(1) atom(,) atom(2)

in our case the middle one among other things knows that it was followed

soem additional (lua) processing can be enabled to deal with that too.

in lmtx { } in math is just grouping, so no ordinary math atom is
created; also, digits have their own class which is hoe we control

[NTG-context] Re: Quotation mark in drop caps

2024-07-11 Thread Thangalin
Thanks vm!

Sadly, I have no way of telling the 4,000+ people who have downloaded my
Markdown editor how they ought to compose and typeset their prose.

I'll let Robert Bringhurst know, though, and ask him to change Rule 4.1.5
of his Elements of Typographic Style from "include the initial quotation
mark" to "rewrite your prose." ;-)

Yes, change/edit the text to avoid the quotation marks in the first place.

e.g. There are always better/simpler ways to achieve the story to be
told. Trace back to the underlying idea as why these drop capitals were
invented in the first place. Most likely to visually separate blocs of
mono colored bread text with the lead characters from the drawer below.
These days there are (better) alternatives to solve the issue of
separation text paragraphs.

[NTG-context] Re: Quotation mark in drop caps

2024-07-10 Thread Thangalin
Hi again,

The output shows a closing red opening quotation mark, which is the
opposite of what I'd like to achieve. Using \quotation won't work in my
situation because the text mixes and matches numerous types of quotation
marks and the user is writing in Markdown. Matching against “ would work
for most cases; however, the quotation marks could include:

" -- straight quote
“ -- opening curly double quote
‘ -- opening curly single quote (or apostrophe)
« -- opening double quote (French, Spanish, etc.)
‹ -- opening single quote
「 -- opening Japanese quote

  \setinitial[two] \symbol[leftquotation]Knuth\symbol[rightquotation]

This produces:

What I'm looking to produce is:

Using \quotation instead of \symbol[leftquotation] or “ produces a red
closing quote:

Any other ideas?

Thank you!

Table floats split in odd places, independent of top/page/here location.

There’s always a first part, then some not-float text, then the other

Even if the table would fit on two pages (with location=page), it always
gets split into three.

Can I influence this anyhow?

Hans explained in today’s online meeting:

The float location "split" cannot be combined with other locations

\startpostponing

So, if the blank over a heading is 2 lines, forcing it at the top of the

What I need is a non zero blank at the top, to align the following text

A solution could be checking whether we are at the top of the page, and
choose the blank amount accordingly.

How can I make such a test?

A lot of stuff.

The author is quite opinionated against ConTeXt/LuaTeX, knows only the

There is so much wrong with that section of the survey one does not know where

Different worlds, different audiences, different objectives so a waste
of energy to discuss i guess.

I can only say that when we started with luatex there was nothing that
fit the requirements (oriental tex sub project) so we decided to go the
lua route and could always be amopng the first to support new stuff
(color fonts, variable fonts, adaptations, etc). And I'm not even taling
math in luametatex here.

But as said: we serve a different audience, not the applications and of
course the tex community doesn't have the big-tech funding and resources
so ... and we try to keep a low profile anyway.

Thank you, but that doesn’t fit my use case: In my ConTeXt book, there are many
long tables of parameters. The caption says “Parameters of \setupsomething”,
but I’d also give hints like “You can also use the parameters of \setupframed,
see p.123.”. I’d like to have these hints only in the first caption, and
they’re different for each table.

It’s not that important, I can move the text somewhere else, but often enough
in ConTeXt there are obscure features for advanced stuff.

If I understand you correctly then this does what you want. It's a bit of a
hack though.

\defineselector [caption] [max=2]

\starttext

\setupfloatsplitting [inbetween={\setupselector[caption][n=2]}]

\placetable[split]
   {\select{caption}

Thank you, that’s a good idea. (Another mechanism in ConTeXt that I

[NTG-context] Draw leftframe to a description

2024-07-08 Thread Gerion Entrup
Hi,

I want to typeset an "excurses" description that is marked with a leftframe.
The problem is that it spans about multiple pages and has footnotes.

Here is an MWE:
```
%% -> mwe-framedtext.pdf
\defineframedtext[excursusbg][
frame=off,
leftframe=on,
rulethickness=1mm,
framecolor=blue,
toffset=0mm,  % there is an offset anyways
]
%% -> mwe-textbackground.pdf
% \definetextbackground[excursusbg] [
%   location=text,
%   background=color,
%   backgroundcolor=lightblue,
%   frame=on,
%   loffset=10cm,  % seems to have no impact
% ]
\definedescription[excursus][
text={Excursus:\ },
alternative=top,
headstyle=bold,
margin=1cm,
width=broad,
before={\startexcursusbg},
after={\stopexcursusbg},
]
\starttext
\input ward
\startexcursus[title={A Knuth extract}]
\input knuth
\stopexcursus
\input ward
\startexcursus[title={A much longer Knuth extract}]
\input knuth
Sometimes, sentences have footnotes\footnote{Some footnote}.
\input knuth
\input knuth
\stopexcursus
\stoptext
```
See the attached PDFs for the different results.

In principal, I would like the excurses typesetted like to solution with
\defineframedtext. However, this does not work with pagebreaks.
Additionally, the leftframe is too long (it begins above the "Excursus" text).
I tried toffset to let the leftframe begin exactly at the "Excurses" text
without success.

The solution with \textbackground looks somewhat promising. It supports
pagebreaks, but draws above footnotes and prints a small rectangle at the end
of the excursus. I also didn't found a way to specify a leftframe only.
Also, loffset seems to have no effect, here.

Do I use the false environments? Do you know a better solution?

[NTG-context] Quotation mark in drop caps

2024-07-07 Thread Thangalin
Hi list!

I have a three-part question.

First, when using \placeinitial, how would you detect whether the first
character is a quotation mark, and, if so, override the setupinitial to use
m=2?

Second, when using m=2 to capture a quotation mark, how would you change
the font size of only the quotation mark, leaving the font size for the
remaining characters the same?

Third, can this be accomplished using setupinitial alone? Such as:

\setupinitial[
  quotefont=\SmallerFont,
  quotecolour=\QuoteColour,
]

A few typographic examples of what I'd like to accomplish:

Re: https://i.ibb.co/7rJYBS6/initial-Matching-Quotes.gif
Re: https://i.ibb.co/Hz8v5w4/atlantips-drop-caps-and-quotation-marks-10.png

My understanding of what exists in ConTeXt:

\starttext
\startchapter
  % This detaches the quotation mark from the paragraph, which looks
strange.
  \placeinitial
  "We held ConTeXt in high esteem."
\stopchapter

\startchapter
  % This looks great.
  \placeinitial
  \input knuth
\stopchapter

\startchapter
  % I'd like to eliminate this next line.
  \setupinitial[m=2]

  % The quotation mark is a drop cap, albeit too big.
  \placeinitial
  "We held ConTeXt in high esteem."
\stopchapter

\startchapter
  % I'd like to eliminate this next line.
  \setupinitial[m=1]

  % The setups are reinitialized, which in theory should not be needed.
  \placeinitial
  \input knuth
\stopchapter
\stoptext

Here's how I'd like to typeset the document (using setupinitial alone):

\setupinitial[
  % When a quotation mark is detected, the given font is applied to it.
  quotefont=\SmallerFont,
  % Not necessary, but could be useful to other people?
  quotecolour=\QuoteColour,
]

\starttext
\startchapter
  % The quotation mark gets attached and applies the smaller font size.
  \placeinitial
  "We held ConTeXt in high esteem."
\stopchapter

\startchapter
  % Only captures the first letter, because no quotation mark is present.
  \placeinitial
  \input knuth
\stopchapter
\stoptext

Is this possible? If so, how?

Thank you!

IMO, "Duden" is obsolete, should be the same as default; it makes no
sense to have a default setting that doesn’t adhere to the official
rules. If I’m not mistaken it’s also the same as DIN 5007-1; maybe there
was a difference before 2005. (DIN 5007-2 and de-AT have their uses.)

The order of umlauts etc. should be ok.

[ß]
In tex/context/base/mkiv/sort-lan.lua, ß is replaced by s, while it
should be sorted like ss in default and both DIN versions. (de-AT sorts
ss after ß.)

[upper-/lowercase]
While casing is not mentioned in Wikipedia
(https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alphabetische_Sortierung), Duden „Satz
und Korrektur“ says:

Uppercase characters get sorted the same as lowercase (i.e. mixed), but
if both appear, lowercase comes first.

ATM all German settings sort lowercase behind uppercase.

Generally, default method seems to be not "default" but "before". Does
this make sense?

If we look at the method presets, there’s none for {zm,pm,zc,zm,uc}
(upper like lower, ignore diacritics – basic default for German).

\index{äpfel}
\index{aepfel}
\index{Aepfel}
\index{Ápfel}

\page
\completeindex

\stoptext
"""

default order should be:

aepfel
Aepfel
apfel
Apfel
äpfel
Äpfel
ápfel
Ápfel
aqua

DIN 5007-2 sorts like:

aepfel
Aepfel
äpfel
Äpfel
apfel
Apfel
ápfel
Ápfel
aqua

de-AT sorts like:

aepfel
Aepfel
apfel
Apfel
aqua
äpfel
Äpfel
ápfel
Ápfel

[NTG-context] processor for index sub-entry?

2024-07-05 Thread Henning Hraban Ramm

Hi,
is it possible to apply a processor to an index sub-entry?

\index{Modules+\type{filter}}
looks good, but "filter" is sorted under "type".

\defineprocessor[type][style=mono]
\index{Modules+type->filter}
results in a "Modules / type->filter" entry.

\index[Modules+filter]{Modules+\type{filter}}
works and looks good, but the code feels bad…

[NTG-context] Re: ConTeXt has stopped working

2024-07-05 Thread Jethro Djan
Sorry for the noise. Working after a fresh install. Probably something to
do with the update script.
