AFAIU XML, having a lone in the file is not valid. You need to have amp; if you want ampersand. Any other entity (something;) should be appropriately defined by some style file. Do the utilities work with simple sample files. All I want to do is read the #$% files! Did you try db2latex? It comes with db2context which handles a large subset of docbook specifications. Aditya I will look up db2latex, download it, and try it. But of course I would prefer a Context solution if possible. [NTG-context] Use of standard font engines on Linux
Linux distros have been emphasizing the use of the fonts in fc-cache across applications. TeX always did its own thing, with tfm files, mapping files etc. I note that some of the newer TeX products are using pfb + afm instead of pfb + tfm. [NTG-context] Non-printing macro disturbs line justification.
I did a big project in Context and becuse I wanted to use the special
features of eplain's interface to makeindex I wrote my own indexing
macro. Every place I inserted a call to this macro extra space
appeared at that point. Here is my macro:

I had to retreat to the regular Context indexing tag. Can someone
spot the flaw in my definition?

Sections have numbers, subjects etc. don't. What I want is a series of subdividisions (subject, subsubject etc. without visible numbers which nevertheless show up in a chapter table of contents, again without numbers, just page numbers. I tried defining a combined list foo thus: \definelist[subject][alternative=a] \definelist[subsubject][alternative=a] \definelist[subsubsubject][alternative=a] \definecombinedlist[foo] [subject,subsubject,subsubsubject] [level=subsubsubject,criterium=local] but when I state \placelist[foo] ...nothing appears. Should I start all over, replace subjects with sections etc. and then try to suppress the numbering in both places? [NTG-context] Texfont feature request.
Texfont is an awesome program. I just created a free and legal Bitstream Charter pseudo small caps font. (The real thing costs money so I can't redistribute it free.) But I have two problems with it in practice. 1. It is designed to work with typescripts. But when I need to use the font with e.g., pdftex I have to use updmap anyway. That means among other things I have to search for the generated map file, determine its name, and add it to updmap.cfg. And even with Context sometimes a typescript is overkill. 2. When I want to distribute a demonstration app in source code format using that font, I have to collect all the generated bits and pieces and put them in the same directory as the app. That will work. But where are all the bits and pieces? More searching. Now here is my request: add a switch that eliminates the movement of bits and pieces elsewhere so that the map file, the tfm files, the vf files etc. are all collected in the current directory. [NTG-context] Wierd problem.
On another list a listmate proposes to print a book in two copies side by side. The page size is 5.5 x 8.5 in. He wants to print two copies on his laser printer. He wants two impressions of page one side by side on letter paper, with two copies of page two on the reverse side etc. for 200 pages. Then he will guillotine the stack making two copies of the book. But wait, it gets worse. He is not resetting the book but has a pdf file as his source. I and others suggested the usual bit of using PSUtils to set four pages per sheet and folding them etc. but he doesn't want to get into folding. He has a guillotine and a binder. He doesn't have a folder. So, given a pdf file of a 5.5 x 8.5 book as a starting point, is there a sensible way to massage the pdf or its PS equvalent in a way to give him what he wants? to set a new minimum size for the left part of a hyphenated word. The
customer requested it at the last minute (overly picky editor.) It
worked OK on a long and complex document.

[NTG-context] texexec message suppression.
for some time now I have been fussing over the volume of uneccessary (to me) informational messages spewed forth by texexec, in particular the long list of font scripts repeated sometimes 8 or 9 times. Since I don't even use most of these scripts I wonder why they show up on every pass of every compile. The --silent parameter to texexec should suppress some or all of these message, or so the manual says. But it doesn't. I get the same long list of messages, repeated over and over. Ideally I could suppress informational messages but keep the warning messages, per the traditional unix and 2 output routings for sysout and syserr. But texexec does not appear to make the distinction. Routing all output to /dev/null is a trick that I use sometimes, but if the run errors off then it just hangs with no message. Are there any clever workarounds I have missed? Is there a setting somewhere in my texlive instllation that I can tweak? Should I do surgery on texexec itself? Knuth defines a macro for simple fractions such as 3/4 etc. and calls
it \frac:

The call is e.g., \frac 3/4.
This works fine in Context. However if I undefine the Knuth macro and
still use the same \frac call I don't get an error message but the
results are quite different. I get both a stroke and a bar between
the 3 and the 4.
Is there another macro in Context called \frac and if so how is it
called?

[NTG-context] Output from texexec
Under TeXLive 2007 version of context when I run even a trivial program I get reams of output referring to the same typefiles over and over again. Then I get a little message (in the log file) about fonts being reset. Then I get messages about the fonts I actually use. The purpose of compiler messages is to communicate something. 13 iterations of the exact same messages does not increase my store of knowledge any more than 1 display. My questions: what purpose does the repetitious listing of all these typefiles serve and can I suppress it some way? [NTG-context] Killing the space after a section.
I have the file set up with no parindent and one blank line between
paragraphs. but I want to kill the extra space after \section
headers. The current definition is:
\setuphead[section][number=no,style=\SectSans,page=no,after={\vskip
2sp}]
...but the blank line remains. Do I need to use a negative \vskip?
\SectSans is a font I set up (bold, sans serif and slightly larger. )
If there is a way to specify both bold and sans serif at a larger
(e.g. \tfb) size I would be happy to use that instead.

[NTG-context] Makeindex and Context
I like the extended feature set of makeindex so I creatred my own
little routine to use it with Context on a recent project. Here is
the code:

It works fine from the indexing point of view. But if the \sidx{} tag
is embedded in a paragraph then some extra space is left where the
tag existed in the paragraph. I had to move all such tags to either
the beginning or the end of the paragraph.
What did I fail to do?

I have a situation where I wish to import a file and have the line endings and the spaces honored as in \typefile. But I want any font changes (e.g. \it) honored as well. I tried the plain TeX commands \obeylines and \obeyspaces. The line endings and typeface changes were honored but the spaces were not. Is there a convenient way to do this? I can preprocess the file through e.g. sed to patch in \crlf and hard spaces but this seems a bit clumsy. BTW this is text in columns. The fancy tricks one can to with Natural Tables seem to work within the body of the table where I don't need them but fail in the header area where I do need them. I too am stuck in specification hell. The specifier is ovenamored of
stretching text and the like. I worked through that with the TeX/LaTeX macro
soul.sty.
My immediate problem is with putting the
caption of a table in a different font. Currently I have:

I can avoid \placefigure and hand code each caption of course but that
deprives me of the ability to float the figures.
Unfortunately they brought in the designer after I had already started work
(and cashed the deposit check.)
The first difficulty (typeface) is IMO the most critical.

I have a specification for a chapter head that is so complex I have little hope of modifying the Context head within any reasonable time frame. But I still prefer to use the Context chapter head for TOC, numbering of figures and the like. So I decided to hand code the head but still use \chapter for these other purposes. Here is my current workaround: -- \setuphead[chapter][command=\white,header=nomarking] I still have to use \noheaderandfooterlines as well for some reason. Eyes saw top, brain transliterated it to high, effect was wrong. Now I am
all better. The other effect was interesting though. I also discovered that
if I use placefigure instead of placetable it works but the caption says
figure instead of table. My customer likes to misname things, like calling
tables figures, and parts sections. This latter aberration is becoming
common. Context allows me to adapt even to bad nomenclature.

This is fairly primitive, but I only need to write a formal letter
once every blue moon, and this setup works for me. If you have more
frequent need, then you may want more structure in the letters. If you
can finalize how you want to input your letter, creating a personal
module is not that hard with ConTeXt. I think that this is one of
ConTeXt's strongest points. In LaTeX, you first find a package, then
you see that the package does not do 100% of what you want, then you
read the code of the package and try to figure out how to make it do
what you want. With ConTeXt, once you know what you want, it is fairly
straight forward to write your personal module to achieve that. But of
course, ConTeXt needs more modules for things like journals and
conferences which have specific layout requirements.

I use letterformat.tex from _The TeXBook_. . Why not? The tricky part is
setting up the standard letterheads. Writing the letter then becomes very
simple. Here is a live example with some hiding of the real identity:

My task requires alternating whate and gray bars for a table. I was happy to
jump on the Natural Table facility. Further, I want the table to float in
the classic TeX fashion. I don't know the exact code for this in Context.

I used \setupitemize[serried] for a numbered list. The items were each wider than the text block so they wrapped around to a second line. As a result Context left a blank line between items. I am required by my customer to alternate between white and screen backgrounds for each row of a table for all tables, and there are lots of tables. I am considering adding code to each row of the table or else doing the thing in metafun/metapost. Advice, anyone? Just to mess things up further she wants the table number etc. above the table and left justified. I can handle that. The customer is not always right but the customer is always the customer. from LaTeX, there's even more chance that they won't have it. In
ConTeXt you know at least that downloading one thing should suffice.)
The bad thing about Context is that many errors in parameters etc. are simply
not reported when you compile a document. One of the many good things is
that the elaborate structure is there but not required. Most plain TeX (the
old stuff) documents will run under Context. Make a file with:
Hello world
\bye
and run it through Context. It will work. But with LaTeX you must have a LaTeX
specific statement or two or it won't work.

I store all messages on this list forever in a directory. It is more

I just noticed on a sample chapter sent to a customer that the em dashes are missing. What is shown is the three hyphens instead. I am able to establish Adobe Garamond as my body type with just a couple of

The wiki is a good start, but there needs to be more effort to ensure that the sources can be used as the definitive manual. The introductory manual should devote considerable space to explaining how to find current information in the wiki and or using the source files. My preferences in order are printed book, downloadable source, downloadable pdf and online anything. Some of my friends over on the Scribus list are struggling with pamphlet layout and so on. It occured to me that if a multiple page pdf created by Scribus were inserted into a Context file then the Context prepress manipulation could be used to set it up. [NTG-context] Making context produce dvi file.
For one recurring task I first produce a booklet version 5.5. x 8.5in, then a straight pdf 8.5 x 11in, all controlled by modes. The third format is plain text. Others recommend dvi2tty for this conversion. But how do I get Context to produce a dvi file? The Context manual does not make this clear. the above can be used as pseudocode to guide the process.
The poems themselves would look like e.g:

Then set the appropriate errorformat. Then map your F key to :make | copen. That way, vim will parse texexec's output and show only the lines that have errors in the copen window. I compile a Context file using an F key in my Gvim session. I I waste a lot of time watching messages scroll past in my Gvim window. What I am looking for is a command line switch or a combination of command line switches that will suppress ALL messages except for: 1. error messages that cause the compile to halt. 2. The message(s) that tells me that compilation is completed. If necessary I can live without this message. With most programs one can divert all ordinary messages to /dev/null but fatal error messages still return to the console or the console-equivalent (the 2 messages in Linux-speak.). Can this be done? The --silent parameter seems to have no effect. [NTG-context] Success and a question.
I successfully updated to the latest cont-tem zip but it wasn't easy. Since I have had continual trouble, even when I reloaded texlive 2005, I started with a new partition (Slackware 10.2) and a fresh texLIve installation. I followed the Berry routine. At the end I did: texhash fmtutil --all texhash (One cannot do texhash too often.) I tested this on a known file and it worked. Now I went to my production partition, wiped out the 2005 directory and copied the 2005 directory from my test partition. After the usual texhash and fmtutil bowing and scraping I now have an up-to-date context installation that seems to work OK. Now for the question: When I process a tex file with texexec I get a pdf file and a warnig message that says warning use tekmfstart texecec instead. Well the bare texexec seems to work OK but the command; texmfstart texexec book.tex exits immediately with no output. statement above is removed.

Way back in my subfile macros.tex I had an erroneous statement: \setuptyping [option=tex] This compiled clean and the resulting pdf could be read in xpdf. But Acrobat Reader didn't like it. I have no memory of when or how I came up with that option. To find the problem first I commented out \input macros.tex which identified where the problem was. Then I commented out the whole macros.tex file (128 lines), and uncommented it block by block until I found the culprit. [NTG-context] INstall minimal context system.
I downloaded the justtex.zip and the context-linux.zip files into a work directory /usr/local/cont and unzipped them. Then I cd to the tex directory under that work directory. I made the the setuptex file executable and executed it with no apparent effect. Then I changed the path to point to /usr/local/cont/tex/texmf-linux/bin and ran mktexlsr. It followed the new path. I ran texexec --make --alone and it seemed to be successful. Ran mktexlsr again. Then I ran a test program in another directory. It could not find cont-en.fmt. In fact this file or anything similar to this file does not exist in this tree, although it existed in my previous tetex tree and exists in my texlive tree. I have in addition downloaded the iso's for slackware-current. I tried upgrading just the TeX part of Slackware but there are too many differences in libraries between Slack 10.2 and Slack current. For my next step I will install Slack-current on a spare partition. Then I will test Context there and note the version. If it is fairly recent then I will proceed using that partition. I have been working with two versions of TeX, neither one of which is new enough to accomodate all the latest Context bells and whistles. I tried downloading context.zip and installing it on my standard /usr/share/texmf tree. No joy. I get messages telling me to use the texmfstart command instead. This is as I recall a Windows thingie. So next I tried linux binaries only. Still no joy. Let me start all over. Assuming a working TeX installation (either tetex or texlive 2005) what incantation must I perform to upgrade to the latest stable Context and what specific zip file should I use? Ruby seems to be one of those small-market languages like Lisp etc. and I worry when important software becomes dependent on such things. For example Xindy is dependent on I think Lisp and that has handicapped its development and acceptance majorly. If Slackware decides not to include Ruby any more then I will have a problem. Of course as the developer you need to use the tool that fits your hand best. And I did test out newtexexec (through a clumsy call) and it seemed to work ok. I think the messages are different however. I will have to do a differential to make sure. Are there things that can be done in Ruby that can't be done conveniently in Perl? Conversely, are there things that can be done in Perl that are more elegant than what can be done in Ruby? I am thinking of perl/Tk for a nice gui interface for example. [NTG-context] Ugly hack for multiple MSWord docs.
Frequently I find myself in the position of needing to combine
several MSWord and/or rtf documents into a single file for either
pdftex or Context. I have settled on this strategy.
1. If necessary I convert the documents to rtf with Open Ofice
Writer.
2. I convert the resulting rtf documents to LaTeX using rtf2latex2e.
3. I need to rename some of the LaTeX commands to their plain
TeX or Context equivalents, and simply ignore others. Instead of
editing each and every occurrence, I add the following to my
macros.tex file which heads up the document:

\def\begin{}
\def\end{}
\def\textbf#1{\bf #1}

I create a master file that calls in each of the .tex files
and compile the whole goulash. If I missed a latex tag then I add
it to my \defs shown above and recompile until I get a
clean run. Now I have a readable pdf file and can start correcting
the format.
The scattered Latex tags give me hints where centering etc. might
be needed even though the tags are inoperative in Context, thanks
to my nullifying \def statements shown above.
Someday there will be an elegant solution to the MSWord to
Context problem. For now there is my ugly hack as described here.

One question: How do I mix in the necessary Context commands such as papersize, font selection etc.?
