[NTG-context] textools --fixtexmftrees : parse error !

Hi,

being a dumb Mac-user I ran into problems using "textools --fixtexmftrees":

[powerbook:scripts/context/ruby] himmelblau% ruby 
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/scripts/context/ruby/textools.rb --fixtexmftrees 
~/Library/texmf
-:1: parse error
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/scripts/context/ruby/textools.rb --fixtexmftrees

I also tried:

[powerbook:scripts/context/ruby] himmelblau% ruby

I have know idea what that means...

What is wrong with the command I used?

what happens if you replace ~ with /home/yourname/

But I thought, the fact that the latest context update doesn't find files in my old 
tetex set anymore, is related to the map files, no?
So shouldn't it be /usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local instead of 
/Users/steffen/Library/texmf ?

Nevertheless it again provides the same error:

[NTG-context] rtf2context ?

Hi,

when typesetting a book with ConTeXt I always have to start with a author's RTF 
file. For converting I use "rtf2latex2e" - and have to spent a lot time too 
cleaning and correction the resulting tex file.

Does anybody know/have a better solution for converting RTF to TEX files?

(I won't be the only one using ConTeXt for typestting existing RTF/DOC 
documents, do I?)

What exactly do I have to do (using tex4ht)?

Could someone give me some advice/example?

(Btw.: While looking for information I saw that there are two different

but when using \definecolumnset[myset][n=2]

...

doesn't work (actually it ends in halfempty pages).


How to set fontsize+interlinespace with columnsets ?

[NTG-context] columnset BUG - (urgent!)

Hi,

please have a look at testfile below:
without a footnote everything works fine,
but with the footnote the columnset gets crashed!

I noticed this bug in a bigger book project:
The columnset is at the end as a seperate document (\component).
And the footnote was added 300 pages and 5 component files before !!!

As this footnote was one of the last changes that were done
before I wanted to send the book to the printer
a fast help would be very much appreciated.

I experienced this when I added before the literature component
a catalogue component that uses a structure like the commented lines do.

[NTG-context] ConTeXt tool for enabling comments in PDF ?

Hi,

in the MacOSX-TeX-list (mainly on LaTeX) I just read a discussion on "Comments 
in PDF" (by AcrobatReader7).

Do we have a ConTeXt tool which can enable users of e.g. AdobeReader 7 to add 
comments to PDF files ?
Or is it true that this "comments enabled flag" can only be set for PDFs 
generated by Acrobat -- and only by the original author?

[NTG-context] french hyphenation after l-apostrophe doesn't work

Hi,

when, in a french project, the line ends with e.g. l'int\'{e}r^{e}t
then context doesn't hyphenate "l'interet" and the line gets stretched.
(If I wouldn't have the l-apostroph construction then the word is hyphenated 
"in-teret", so its hyphenation is know to TeX.)

But for I have a lot of this "l-apostroph" constructions at line endings in my 
document it is impossible to type individually \- at the best breaking points 
(here after "in-"). I need to have a global option that re-activates the 
hyphenation even if the word starts with l-apostroph.

When I typeset the apostrophe like a slash: l|'|int\'{e}r^{e}t
then the line gets broken, but after "l'" and I was told this is wrong in 
french.

So what else could be done to automatically break int\'{e}r^{e}t again but 
*not* after l' ?

as far as I've seen columnsets work in a magazine like style:

\stopcolumnset

gives results like this:

But how can I structure columnsets so my result will look like this?:

ccc  ccc
ccc  ccc

[NTG-context] Gerben's TeX+ConTeXt packages: can't find the format `cont-nl.fmt' ?

Hi,

in the past I could use Gerben's TeX and ConTeXt distributions for Mac without 
manual changes.

Last night I downloaded the "2004 stable" and Context-updater.
If I now typeset a ConTeXt file as usual (texexec --pdf foo.tex)
I get the following error:

What has changed? Is there something I've missed?

[NTG-context] fundamental problem with headings

Hi,

there seems to be a fundamental problem with headings - or at least I have :(

Each kind of "emphasizing" - like \it \bf \cap \sc etc. - lets the respective 
phrase fall back to the documents bodyfont (see example below).


How can I avoid this bug? Do I use wrong code?

I re-run it and have still the same result.

What's strange to me is that in both texexec.ini (tetex and local) the default 
interface
language is set to en. 
Is there another file containing this information?

Anyway, as I couldn't solve the miracle I moved to avoiding it:
by using texexec --pdf --interface=en

This works.

[NTG-context] TeX run : 8 (vs. 2 ?)

Hi,
a ConTeXt document that is typeset under WinXP needs 2 runs.
The same document (and the same typescript, map files, font files) 
when typeset under OSX (Gerbens i-installer used) needs 8 runs!!! 
Each time it is typeset!

For the result looks the same I assume it's a kind of bug.
Anybody knows what to do?

Hi,
while looking closer at the result of typesetting an older (Nov. 
2004) document with todays pdfeTeX and context stuff I noticed that 
the layout of my TOC changed:

Normally I write all setups in a SetupEnvironment file that is loaded 
at the beginning of a project structure.
Like this:

\environment SetupEnvironment_WLTHR

\component Kapitel/Titelei
\component Kapitel/Vorwort

But as in SetupEnvironment also \setupindenting is set, now the TOC 
gets this indenting too!
Once (2004, before pdfeTeX 1.20 ?) this didn't affect the generated 
\completecontent - only the real \component files.

Is this change known? Are there more differences like this, so one 
knows what to look for when typesetting older documents with new TeX 
(ConTeXt?) files?

*still* runs 8 times under Mac (2 times under Win)! Why?

 Note that the standard OS X filesystem is case preserving, but not
 case sensitive when accessing a file. So accessing test.tex would be
 happy with a file called TEST.tex. It is possible to create a pure
 case sensitive HFS+ filesystem, but it isn't necessary to reproduce
 the problem. (It would probably avoid it, though).

So I made a new setup:
new files/folders and every names lowercase (folders, files, references).
The first time I executed
texexec --pdf test.tex
it looked good: 2 runs!
Then I executed
texexec --pdf test.tex
once more and now it was 8 runs again!
Does this make sense?

I just saw that you also fought with the "unknown 
reference []" while using the ffr encoding (nine 
months ago).
I read and tried all the solutions that Hans and you found out up to now.

But as soon as I set
\enablemode[activecolon] \usemodule[tryout]
in my local cont-sys.tex I am back to 8 runs 
again (either with Patrick's patch or with your 
line in .profile).

Do you experience the same (or did I use the wrong .profile here on Mac)?
This would mean that, when using ffr, we either 
have to ignore all this unknown reference outputs 
or fall back to 8 runs :o(

Or does someone already has a solution covering both bugs?

But my workflow of using ConTeXt is typesetting already finished 
books (.doc-files). And so I would like to change the "text" as 
little as possible and instead use an suitable set of typescript and 
setup environment.

That's why I thought I'd need a mysans (or \myrm) defined in the 
typescript to be used in Taco's full-blown bodyfont switch as 
described above:

 You might like to take a look at the typescripts in the OpenType.zip file
 at <http://homepage.mac.com/atl/tex/>. I defined full myserif/mysans
 families (I called them romancaps and capsans) to stand next to the serif
 and sans families (same font, different features). There are also a
 couple convenience macros in there to help switch between the two.
 Is that the sort of thing you're looking for? There's nothing inherently
 SmallCaps (or OpenType) about the fundamental typescripts--that's just
 the first testing ground I found.

I had a look at your file but I think my point is different:
You still use only the predefined serif, sans etc.
\usetypescript[serif]...
\usetypescript[sans]...
\usetypescript[math]...
but I would like to use also
\usetypescript[myserif]...
and the corresponding \myrm (next to \tt and \ss).
I don't know Hans' texnical term for serif, sans, mono, math etc. is 
(as used above).

I used to install the fonts that I need for contexing.
But for the current project only Helvetica is needed, and so I 
remembered Patrick saying:

[NTG-context] Going crazy with font conversion (diaeresis)!

Hi,
using HelveticaNeue (came with OSX) was fine.
But using Helvetica (from OSX system fonts) just won't work:
- when I have converted the .dfont to .pfb with 
FontLab the diaeresis of the german Umlaute (äöü) 
are too far to the right.

- when I have converted the .dfont to .pfb with 
FontForge the diaeresis of the german Umlaute 
(äöü) are OK, but all other elements like Macron, 
Cedilla or Ogonek are too far to the left (!).

Anybody knows this strange behaviour?
And even better what to do to avoid this mess??

Hi,
I want to use OSX HelveticaNeue font.
So I open it in FontForge and - because I'd like to use the kerning 
information - generate the Font with its PFB, AFM and TFM files.

According to Bill's help page it should work by (renaming and) 
placing the phnr8r.tfm in its tfm folder, the phnr8a.afm and 
phnr8a.pfb in its respective folders (within my texfm-font tree).

Then I need a mapfile texnansi-helveticaneue.map with the line:
phnr8r HelveticaNeue 4 < phnr8a.pfb texnansi.enc
And my test file looks like this:
\loadmapfile[texnansi-adobe-helveticaneue.map]
\definefontsynonym[HelveticaNeue][phnr8r][encoding=texnansi]

Yes it is, of course!
But by using HelveticaNeue as is, there is no kerning information 
included. The result is quite poor, as you can imagine. And as I 
don't know how to set a proper kerning (in reasonable time) AND how 
to get it  available in ConTeXt I see no other alternative than using 
Helvetica and use the kerning information that is included in Adobes 
afm/tfm/vf files (being part of tetex).

But if someone want to show me the path to proper TeX kerning I'd 
also prefer HelveticaNeue, no doubt!

Now it works. Very nice and clear ways to get it.
But both goodies don't work with OSX's Helvetica.dfont
If you try it with the .ttf you'll get:
Error: pdfetex (file Helvetica.ttf): can't find table `OS/2'
 ==> Fatal error occurred, the output PDF file is not finished!
And if instead you use the .pfb
then you'll get the misplaced macrons and tildes that I've reported.
Just try this:

 accents, or you could cook up an "expert" encoding (since MacOSX's
 Helvetica does include that character) like Vit, and switch to that
 encoding when you need the character, or you could even go with a big
 unicode font install. I'll be documenting that process sometime.
That would be quite interesting.
(But for now I leave this workshop and use the HelveticaNeue to go on.)

 vftovp (for virtual fonts) that convert to 'property list'
 format. The format is an ASCCI representation, but Whether or

The idea was to translate TFM (and VF?) in a readable format, and 
back again, in order to be able of making little kerning adjustments:
When  the font is already Tex-installed and in use, but finally there 
is one kerning pair that doesn't look good enough, I wanted to be 
able to make this particular adjustment in the kerning table without 
starting from AFM and going the whole conversion and installation way 
again.

[NTG-context] section head unnumbered but with dots in TOC ?

Hi,
I am lost in ConTeXt's setup-jungle:
I have a section set is unnumbered:
\setuphead[LevelThree] [number=no, ...|
But in the TOC I would like to have a dot (or another symbol) before 
the head/title, like this:

o Section's Title 17
Is this a matter of \setuphead or \setuplist? Or none of them?
How can it be achieved?

Hi,
I'd like to have a table with all available commands (like \d{..} for 
macron) that support diacritic signs needed for western 
transliteration of Sanskrit.

Especially the dot above an n or m:
In an old TUGboat article (Volume 20 (1999), No. 2) that I found by 
Google I read that the dot above an n should be "n (Vulthius). But 
here it stays the " (like the German Umlaut).

Anybody knows more?

again the stretch option kills the defined
\setupTABLE[column][1][width=1cm,align=left]
\setupTABLE[column][4][width=1cm,align=middle]
(see previous example)
Isn't it possible to define the total width of a table
and the width of some columns (here 1 and 4)
in order to let only the undefined width of column 2 and 3 be 
flexible (stretchable)?

[NTG-context] re-using ConTeXt typescripts ?

Hi Adam,

the simplicity of XeTeX's font handling is amazing -- when starting 
from scratch.
But I am wondering how can I continue to use the typescripts (and 
virtual files) that I used to use with ConTeXt?!


texexec --xtx --example.file

ends in an error log containing:

This is METAFONT, Version 2.71828 (Web2C 7.5.4)
kpathsea: Running mktexmf AGaramond-Regular

! I can't find file `AGaramond-Regular'.



As I do not have *any* idea where to start searching for my mistake 
(resp. the place where changes have to be made) I dare to send you a 
complete minimal example (that worked with pure texexec --pdf 
--example.file)


Any feedback might probably help me...

sure, you've mentioned AGaramondPro.

But I have the AGaramond+Expert fonts (Type1) installed in my texmf 
tree with Walther Schmidts TFM and VF files (see the pad-files in 
the typescript I've sent).

(or in general but German http://home.vr-web.de/was/fonts.html)


And this is the crucial point: for theses files provide e.g. 
optimized (German) kerning information (and more) I really don't want 
to miss them!

And I have absolutely no idea how to access theses files.

Isn't is possible when processing with XeTeX to continue using those 
precious hand-made virtual fonts?

[NTG-context] Basic question on Unicode and ConTeXt

[Steffen Wolfrum]

Hi,

now and then I saw threads on this list dealing with specific 
problems of using various languages with utf-8 input in ConTeXt 
(processing with pdftex, NOT xetex).


I know there is \enableregime[utf]
but what else I needed that the output equals my utf-8 input?

Could some maybe give a short and usable How-To on common examples:
Greek
Russian
an East European language
and an Asian language?

(If the platform makes a difference, I'd be interested in OSX.)

Well, yes, I wasn't interested in e.g. VISCII, but I read the info for UTF.
But as you wrote "linked pages" I became more curious and looked up also those
pages. Indeed, there is more:

But, why is the Vietnamese example with
\enableregime[utf]
\setupencoding[default=t5
linked under
vis = visciiVISCII  Vietnamesevis = viscii  VISCII  Vietnamese
and not accessable with
utf UTF-8   Unicode ? (Same for cyrillic)

Is this just a wrong link, or does this show that I don't have understood the
realationship between regimes and encoding?

Shouldn't all UTF relevant examples be listed under UTF?

a clear black box in the right margin.

Is this command (\version[temporary]) gone??

the first, clean install of MacOS ARM64bits I downloaded from 
https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Installation

Next I followed the thread below (exchanging texmf-osx-64/bin to 
texmf-osx-arm64/bin) and everything works like a charm (ConTeXt ver: 2022.01.21 
20:13 LMTX) !

Today I wanted to update, using 
sh install.sh

After that, running the same TeXShop engine as before gives an error:

Users/steffen/Library/TeXShop/Engines/ConTeXt LMTX_ARM.engine: line 3: 19971

[NTG-context] ugly bug

Hi,

several times I got problems with my publishing house when they noticed that 
the headerlines jump up and down on pages that end/begin with qoutes (i.e. 
smaller interlineskip), see example below: on page 1 the blackrule is about 1mm 
higher than on page 2.

In the past I then used really laborious workarounds to get these single pages 
in the correct way (without jumping)… manual pagebreak, re-define layout etc.

But as the pages are hard to find it would be better that the layout would be 
reliable consistent.

How can this be solved?

The idea is to set the hyphenation for certain words regardless of the language 
that is used in the surrounding paragraphs.

In this example it should stay: «steff-en»

How do i set this to all non-english paragraphs (without using \hyphenation on 
each language-switch)?
