I'm using a site-to-site VPN with a pair of IPCop [ http://ipcop.org/ ] boxes
with absolutely no problems, but my needs are probably less than yours. You
install IPCop on an old computer, so if you have two older boxes around that
you can use, the only hardware cost would be two additional NICs to install in
the two old computers you use. The software is GPL and free.

Where are they supposed to build this so that you can 'see' the Fort Worth
skyline?!?! From noth of Fort Worth, it would have to be south of the North
820/I-35w interchange. I wouldn't see this near Alliance. And who would want
to see the Fort Worth skyline? Granted there are some nice modern
architecture, but there hasn't been a new building erected there in quite
some time. Oh, well

And layers of polymers?!? Even in the Texas heat it would melt. And how are
you supposed to get that out of you 'winter' clothes? Sounds like it would
be more of a goo when it gets past 95 degrees F. How are they supposed to
keep that from melting? They would have to install a large refrigeration
unit, or several small ones, and put in another reactor at Glenn Rose,
perhaps? That is alot of surface area that they are talking about.

And I survived the Heat Wave of '80, too! 100+ days of the temp over 100

Any one with hands on time willing to offer up some input on these devices.
Are they easy to configure? Do they have a stable uptime?

Are their any other hardware solutions that I should review?

How do you get it to scan remotely? Do you bring it on a laptop per se when
you go on site? I use spiceworks to get me a quick rundown of an
environment, but in the office I have no way of detecting what a client's
machines may install or uninstall. If it has an agent, that's okay (in my
scenario).

(Sorry I got carried away.)

I used to use the inet-sciences tool for my help desk solution, but Ilient
is also free (for up to 3 technicians) and has an inventory function that
automatically tracks when software/hardware is added/changed/removed. Also
has a useful tool where you can track licensing and compare it to what's
actually installed on the machines. VERY nice to see when someone loaded
say, iTunes, etc.

You can assign assets to companies, locations, etc. Very easy to
use/configure. You can install the client piece from a central location -
you can browse your network and see which machines don't have the client
installed, highlight them, and push it out. Has a little VNC tie-in (which
can optionally be pushed with the client) that right from the help desk
ticket you can launch VNC to remote to the PC (I don't use that feature, but
still cool). A shortcut is created on the client PC and when a user clicks
on it automatically assigns the machine name and currently logged in user to
the ticket - the user doesn't even have to "log in" to the app. It also has
a "screenshot" feature if the user clicks it the screen is auto-included in
the helpdesk call (it knows to not screenshot the HelpDesk app). Very cool!
On my Dell machines the client piece even auto-reports the machine type and
Dell s/n in the hardware inventory page, as well as the last time it
connected to the Ilient server.

Speaking of, it's pretty unobtrusive and the Ilient server takes very little
resources and easily run with on the same box as my combo WSUS/Trend
OfficeScan/Backups server. It could probably run on a Pentuim III desktop.

Like any good help Desk app, it can auto escalate tickets once it becomes a
certain age, can send new ticket notices via SMTP (I have it send a text msg
to my phone), etc etc.

And these are just the features I use. It has additional functionality, and
if you pay licensing it can use a SQL back end, etc.

Really friggin' slick for the price, and very user friendly setup and use,
which is a top priority for me. Killer functionality does me no good if I
need 20 hours to figure it out since I'm not at any one client 20 hours in a
week!

www.ilient.com for Help Desk, and www.ks-soft.net for
hardware/services/event log/connectivity monitoring, WSUS 3.0 for patching.
But that's just for my night job, my day job here @ NWEA uses other
stuff.(TeamTrack / Nagios).

but requires domain rights and such, their help desk is simple but nothing

For help desk stuff with asset tracking/control I use www.inet-sciences.com
  all web based, includes time/billing
features that can be easily imported/managed by a bookkeeper, and has a
'tiny' version that works well on phones. That made it great for us to be
able to do service tickets in the field.

It has a client login option for ticketing, and the client can assign an
asset to it. You can set it up in help desk or consulting mode. Consulting
mode carves out the inventory by company, so everyone at company A doesn't
see company B's assets, or tickets.

The software mgmt tool is decent, has like 20 slots + serial #'s but its all
done by hand. Used in conjunction with Spiceworks reports you can cross
reference it to get you going.

5 user free tech, spiceworks is free so not too bad.

Any suggestions ?

IIRC, retail is treated like a "book".

Only one person can read the book at once. Using a retail version of
office would allow multiple concurrent users, which is not what retail
licensing is for. So you would need some type of volume license on a

RE: SSL certificates

It's the name recognition, not necessarily the reputation. I just don't like
the idea of having to pay $200 per year per cert more than going with another
company, like Thawte. Which is why I was asking here.

What reputation is that, there poor customer service, bad business practices,

I've used http://www.certificatesforexchange.com/ for an SSL cert for OWA.
Just as good as the big guys and cheap! Also purchased one through Godaddy.com
a couple years ago - same authority, I think.

For online business transactions, however, I'd stick with Verisign, Thawte, or
Geotrust for their recognition and reputation.

Lo chaps,

Wondering if the collective knowledge could recommend something for me.
I'm after a package to help manage all the data we have about clients
here. We were looking at AdventNet ServiceDesk Plus, which sounds right
on paper but doesn't really work. Basically we need to manage support
tickets (ie helpdesk stuff), HOWEVER the crunch is that we need to also
include asset management and be able to associate an asset with a
companys record, so that we can see assets belonging to companies. We
also have to be able to add a lot of custom fields across the board.

AdventNet Service Desk Plus does all this, but doesn't let you associate
the data with a company record, as it's aimed at an IT Dept rather than
an IT company servicing multiple clients.

Any suggestions ?

I'm thinking about going as far as to have something written for us but
I can't really believe that there isn't an off the shelf solution.

OT: SSL and SharePoint Services 3

2008-01-18 Thread Bill Lambert
Hello all...

While we're on the topic of SSL certs, I have an OT question...heh

I'm a newbie to SharePoint Services 3 (no SharePoint server, just SPS 3)
and have an instance set up on a test box. I'm experimenting with
allowing access to it from the Internet and have installed an SSL cert
on it. Now some of the objects return an IE error page when you click
on them saying 'This page must be viewed on a secure channel". Seems
that the HTTP prefix is on these objects instead of HTTPS. I've been
searching for the last two days for a solution including SharePoint
blogs, forums, etc and haven't received any responses. I'm hoping some
of you folks have advice/links/help you can lend.

Apologies for the OT

RE: event log management

2008-01-18 Thread Christopher Boggs
Sorry to dig up old threads, but I just put OSSEC HIDS on one of our
linux FTP servers that sits out in the DMZ.

Installation was easy as pie, it pretty much configured itself... I
didn't run into any problems even though it's an older Redhat box.

Main usage is to block SSH and FTP brute force attacks, which I was
using DenyHosts for previously. DenyHosts worked great for SSH (and
I've recently read about SSH DoS vulnerabilities with it, so I'm glad
I've dumped it) but even with help from the creator of DenyHosts, I
couldn't get it to detect and block FTP login failures using the custom
regex features.

Honestly, I haven't even scratched the surface of the abilities of OSSEC
HIDS with what I need it for, as I've just done a 'local' installtion on
one linux box, but I'll be testing other features soon.

Users with admin privs, followed by not patching on a timely schedule (and
auditing your patch operation to find machines where the patches didn't
install!).

Seriously, those are the biggest threats. It's like trying to put the smoke

It's much easier to keep stuff off the machines in the first place then
trying to detect infections. Detection is a loosing proposition - the bad
guys can mutate faster then the scan engines can keep up.

I would like to look at products like Blink closer since they fit more into
the "keep it off the machine" philosophy, but I'm a little concerned with
the viability of eEye right now :(

Be sure to investigate whether or not mobile devices will work with the

Lenovo R61's and have yet to have an issue with the wireless adapter.

Out of curiosity, if you ever encounter that machine again, try
uninstalling rather than disabling the wired portion of the system. Then
try doing a "Scan for hardware changes" in the device manager. Both
portions may become functional...

We have one Dell laptop that will appear to boot fine, then the screen
goes blank. Nothing revives it. It will work in safe mode. Twice now
(several months apart), I've uninstalled the display adaptor and
re-booted. The system finds the drivers, and all is well (for several
weeks, anyway).

How has NOD32 been handling malware for you guys, beside the excellent
virus protection it
gives? I was wanting to stop using a separate malware product in
addition to Counterspy.

I submitted a support ticket with Sunbelt about the two having some
interaction problems.
OK, I received this response from Sunbelt support:

"You should temporarily disable NOD32 when scanning with Counterspy and
vice versa; otherwise you'll get these errors."

So, I spend the bucks to buy an Enterprise level spyware utility, only
to be told that I have to manually disable my antivirus every day on
1100 machines to get it to work without raising alerts galore? Not very
likely that I will be renewing under those conditions, no matter how
much I like the product otherwise.

So, can a modern government agency make it with only NOD32, in your
opinions? Any other spyware products out there that do not interfere
with the antivirus products?

RE: Small IT company software application

2008-01-18 Thread Benjamin Zachary
I know theres a lot of free ones. Spiceworks has a nice software mgmt app
but requires domain rights and such, their help desk is simple but nothing
fancy.

It's worth noting for your consideration that while there is the cost of
the software itself, I assume you're using Zenworks packages for
software distribution. If you choose to switch vendors, you'll more than
likely be rebuilding all of your application packages into a non
Zenworks format (possibly MSI or exe). This could be a significant
undertaking depending on how many application packages you have and
might be good enough reason to stick with Zen.

I'm biased toward Altiris but it will probably be the more expensive of
them.

Reed Porter is about the only individual I know who still uses Altiris. I’m
sure there are more, but it’s now more hit-and-miss, it seems. I really
don’t know if that’s a Symantec-issue or not.

I’m sure Reed would be willing to help you out offline. Let me know if you

Zen uses MSI format now, so I'd only have to create a pointer in the new

It's worth noting for your consideration that while there is the cost of
the software itself, I assume you're using Zenworks packages for
software distribution. If you choose to switch vendors, you'll more than
likely be rebuilding all of your application packages into a non
Zenworks format (possibly MSI or exe). This could be a significant
undertaking depending on how many application packages you have and
might be good enough reason to stick with Zen.

I'm biased toward Altiris but it will probably be the more expensive of
them.

Hi Folks,

I'm currently using Novell's Zenworks for workstation and
user management here (imaging, ghosting, remote control, inventorying,
application deployment, user and workstation management). There is a
new version out and it looks great. But, before I purchase Zenworks can
those of you who use LANDesk, Altiris, and SMS give me some feedback on
what you like/don't like about those products? All of these products
seems to provide similar functionality. One big thing for me (as my
organization is not-for-profit) is that Microsoft has non-profit
licensing that is so much less than the other three, and cost is a
factor here. But Zen does a lot in one package and I need to find out
if the others do the same.

Comments welcome.

Thanks,
Tom

For online business transactions, however, I'd stick with Verisign, Thawte, or

Lo chaps,

Wondering if the collective knowledge could recommend something for me. I'm
after a package to help manage all the data we have about clients here. We
were looking at AdventNet ServiceDesk Plus, which sounds right on paper but
doesn't really work. Basically we need to manage support tickets (ie
helpdesk stuff), HOWEVER the crunch is that we need to also include asset
management and be able to associate an asset with a companys record, so that
we can see assets belonging to companies. We also have to be able to add a
lot of custom fields across the board.

AdventNet Service Desk Plus does all this, but doesn't let you associate the
data with a company record, as it's aimed at an IT Dept rather than an IT
company servicing multiple clients.

Any suggestions ?

I'm thinking about going as far as to have something written for us but I
can't really believe that there isn't an off the shelf solution.

I let all my Verisign certs expire and went with Digicert. Cheaper (but
not the cheapest) and excellent customer service.

RE: Counterspy will not work with Nod32?

2008-01-18 Thread Steve Kelsay
My apologies to Sunbelt.

The issue this time was that Counterspy identified a threat, but when it
attempted to clean it, NOD32 prevented it from doing anything to the
file. Therefore, the threat could not be cleaned or quarantined, but
also it could not be used malevolently so the system was safe, but I
still got alerts from both systems daily on each of the infected
machines. I have the NOD32 exclusions (in the proper formats) in
Counterspy, so the program itself is protected from interaction, but the
bad files it finds are not in those excluded folders.

That was the problem, not that they don't normally work together, but in
this one case they do not. I addressed the problem to both companies,
and I confused the responses between the two. Again, My apologies to
Sunbelt.

Thanks,
Tom

And make sure the computer accounts (domain computers group for all systems)
have at least read access to the shares and files that need to be run. You can
test whether things will work under the system account (used during startup

Having trouble with a couple of simple machine side startup scripts that are
not working. I usually have no problem with these but they are starting to
annoy me.

Two simple machine GPO's to run bat files. Gpresult shows them there. The
registry shows them there yet they are not accomplishing their intended goal.
One installs Flash 9 and the other installs Java 6. Hitting the bat file
manually and they run error free.

Not sure where else to look to trouble shoot this, nothing in the event logs.

Well I work for the Symantec Altiris Business Unit in the enterprise
support group. So here's what I would say about Symantec support:

The Altiris business unit support has been left alone since the
acquisition - it was not absorbed into the symantec support
organization. While I won't say Altiris support is perfect, our level 1
team has had some challenges in the past, I'm biased to believe that we
provide excellent support to our customers.

I don't have any direct experience with the Symantec support
organization as a customer, other than to hear a bunch of horror stories
about how bad other people say that it is so I'll leave that to others
who have had direct experience. I will say that in recent meetings, the
Symantec executive team has committed to solving whatever support
problems Symantec has had/is having.

They are all very similar - however, SMS has an awesome community at
myitforum.com. The SMS email list there is top notch - it's almost like having
a support contract. All other things being equal, that would weigh pretty
heavy in my decision making. Initial acquisition costs are one thing, ongoing
use of the system are another - and it sounds like MS has acquisition costs
covered too.

2008-01-18 Thread Bryan Garmon

Still, looking at the products they have acquired and seeing what improvements

always see, i.e., Altiris, SMS, LANDesk, etc.

You might take a look…

I use Citrix for application availability for some apps, so the

They are all very similar - however, SMS has an awesome community at
myitforum.com. The SMS email list there is top notch - it's almost like
having a support contract. All other things being equal, that would weigh
pretty heavy in my decision making. Initial acquisition costs are one
thing, ongoing use of the system are another - and it sounds like MS has
acquisition costs covered too.

Users with admin privs, followed by not patching on a timely schedule (and
auditing your patch operation to find machines where the patches didn't
install!).

Seriously, those are the biggest threats. It's like trying to put the
smoke back in a log after you burn it.

It's much easier to keep stuff off the machines in the first place then
trying to detect infections. Detection is a loosing proposition - the bad
guys can mutate faster then the scan engines can keep up.

I would like to look at products like Blink closer since they fit more
into the "keep it off the machine" philosophy, but I'm a little concerned
with the viability of eEye right now :(

RE: Counterspy will not work with Nod32?

2008-01-18 Thread Christopher Boggs
Honestly, I don't administer it (except on a small closed lan) or make the call
to keep using it, but we run Mcafee and have upgraded to 8.5i which has a lot
more spyware related features. It's all we run, and over the time of 3 years
here, we've only had one PC out of ~250 that ever got badly infected.

IMHO, you shouldn't have to run two different programs. I wouldn't want two
different on-access scanners bogging down my system. Our engineers complain
enough about one on-access scanner.

I don't have an opinion on NOD32 though, so I'm not much help.

I agree and in my mind, that hurts their credibility. I haven't read what
(if any) use agreement says for the search, but that brings up serious
privacy issues. I kinda liken that to google posting your searches everytime
you do a search for a new job.

Network Solutions describes the technique as a way to protect legitimate

contact one register the domain name and am alerted that they're still

Well, it looks like I'm not the only one who is having this issue.

So, after I call NSI for some help, they tell me they'll release the domain

Here's the kicker - as I'm getting off the phone, the guy from NSI states,

RE: WTF

2008-01-18 Thread Fogarty, Richard R Mr ARMY GUEST USA USASOC
Actually, they are holding it hostage. The only good thing I can say -
they're not trying to make any additional money on the domain.

However, I now have to wait 4 days to register the domain somewhere else,
because the NSI servers have it locked. Additionally, when asked what about
if I wanted to set it up at NSI - oh, well, that we can handle immediately.
How is that not holding a domain hostage? If they had the ability to
release the domain to someone else, I'd be all for it; but someone did not
think this through.

Well, they only do it for the first "xx" number of domains you search.

Discussed extensively on /. here:

Here's NSI's response:

I suppose it's not nice if you get bitten by this. But it's not as if NSI is
holding the domain hostage. And it might have been brought in to protect
people who'd otherwise get bitten by something nastier (someone who goes and
registers your domain before you can)

Hi Folks,

I'm currently using Novell's Zenworks for workstation and user
management here (imaging, ghosting, remote control, inventorying,
application deployment, user and workstation management). There is a
new version out and it looks great.

Thanks,

Tom

RE: Unstable wireless connection

2008-01-18 Thread Ryan, Randy
We have lots of Dell laptops with similar problems and stumbled on the
procedure Richard described. Most times a reboot will be required after the
adapter is found in the device list. Really is a PITA! Currently using Lenovo
R61's and have yet to have an issue with the wireless adapter.

Hi Folks,

I'm currently using Novell's Zenworks for workstation and user management
here (imaging, ghosting, remote control, inventorying, application
deployment, user and workstation management). There is a new version out
and it looks great. But, before I purchase Zenworks can those of you who
use LANDesk, Altiris, and SMS give me some feedback on what you like/don't
like about those products? All of these products seems to provide similar
functionality. One big thing for me (as my organization is not-for-profit)
is that Microsoft has non-profit licensing that is so much less than the
other three, and cost is a factor here. But Zen does a lot in one package
and I need to find out if the others do the same.

Comments welcome.

Thanks,

Tom

Cross-posting, heh?

OK then, I'll ask this forum as well...

Out of curiosity (and I'd be interested in the opinions of others on this
list), which is considered to be the more serious threat - viruses or
spyware (which includes bots, key loggers, back doors, worms, etc)?

Counterspy will not work with Nod32?

2008-01-18 Thread Steve Kelsay

Leading domain registrar Network Solutions is under fire for a controversial

search activity on the names.

Network Solutions describes the technique as a way to protect legitimate
interest in domains from modern-day cyber-squatters. Word of the approach
spread quickly last week after it was revealed that the company was using
its servers to automatically reserve domains temporarily after it recorded a
search on the term or name in question.

By doing so, the company effectively makes it impossible for a would-be
domain owner to register the domain with another reseller for at least four
days.
