Anyone using ISA pls check this for me

2008-02-04 Thread Osama Salah
Hi all,

I've problems checking this site www.nbad.com (National Bank of Abu
Dhabi) using our ISA server.
I'm still using ISA 2004. The box has also AVast of ISA and Websense on
it but I confirmed its neither of those two.
Now I'm suspecting maybe some issue in their website code and our ISA
server.
If you have ISA pls see if you can access this site.

thanks
Osama Salah

RE: [OT] Broadcom teaming software for x64 2003

2008-02-04 Thread gsweers
I am assuming Net II Nics since that is what just came in all the new Dell 1950
and 2950 servers.

Here is the page, all the way at the bottom. The actual drivers do not contain
the app, you need the Mgmt software at the bottom of the page.

http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/netxtremeii.php

Works great, turn off on each NIC the RSS and or disable the IP Chimney and
performance is great. When you create the new Teamed NIC, its in DHCP mode by
default.

Could it be related to the cable cuts? From SANS ISC:

On NANOG are reports of yet another submarine cable in the middle east that

I'm still using ISA 2004. The box has also AVast of ISA and Websense on it

Go to securityfocus.com, get on a couple of their lists - specifically

ATI Catalyst Control Center and VIsta64

2008-02-04 Thread Joe Fox
Has anybody encountered installing this on Vista64? I've tried
version 8.1and keep getting side-by-side errors. I went back a
version, to
7.12 and it installed the C++ 2005 Redistributable Runtime, and appears to
install, but I don't seen any entries in my start menu.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Uploading bulk folders into Sharepoint Services 3.0

2008-02-04 Thread MarvinC
Anyone know if it's possible to bulk upload both folders and files into WSS
3.0? I see where it's possible to bulk upload files but if these files are
located in separate folders then does that mean that I have to create each
folder and then upload the files?

Any responses appreciated

RE: need to remove everyone group from the ACL of a long list of folders

If you use the cacls command, there is an edit option (/E ?) instead of
replace. Of course you want to edit the permissions not replace it which I
believe is the default.

Subject: need to remove everyone group from the ACL of a long list of

I've tried to use xcacls.vbs with this command string on a test folder, but
instead of just removing the Everyone group from the ACL, it removes all
groups and users from the ACL:

cscript xcacls.vbs d:\home\testfolder /r Everyone

Basically what I'm trying to do via a script is remove the Everyone group
from the ACL of about 1000 folders. I just need the correct command/syntax
to build the script and run with it.

Any tips would be great.

Thanks,

MM

Built using Microsoft RIS.

RIS puts on the base image, then all of the software is deployed via

location I navigate to that function or location specific OU and go from
there. Keep it simple, seriously! If you're dumping everything into one
OU then I can see how it'd be a problem.

Currently, we're using role based names, which I actually don't like, as

Attacking server naming conventions again, how do you guys name your
 servers?

Depends on the nature of the organization. For larger organizations, or
if you have lots of servers, a name based on the site, function and a
number
tend to be the only way to go, especially with the flat naming system
Windows still uses internally.

For smaller shops with the right attitude (like my current employer), I
tend to go with more interesting names, with a theme.
Small shops almost always have all their servers being multi-purpose.
Naming everything SRV1, SRV2, and so on tends to be confusing.
For example, at my current main gig, we've got TIGER, PUMA, LION,
COUGAR,
and NTSERVER. (Can you guess which one has the legacy app that just
don't
die? ;-) ) At my last main gig, we used Simpsons characters. This
doesn't
scale up to large orgs, though, and if the place has a stuffy attitude
it's
not appropriate, either. For the latter, I usually just use ORGSVR1
or
whatever.

RFC-1178 has some advice on this, although it's oriented more towards
DNS,
where the tree structure makes naming conflicts less of an issue.

Currently we use location and function in the name, but what about a
server that does more than one thing?

Use a more generic name, like SRV or UTIL or whatever. Indeed, if
it's at all likely a server will be tasked with multiple things, I
always
try to go with the more generic name. A server named one thing that's
really doing more is misleading. Worse is when the original task then
gets
moved off, and now you have a server named DC1 that isn't a DC
anymore, or
something like that.

Re: Performance problem.

2008-02-04 Thread Salvador Manzo
Avg Disk Queue Length isn¹t a percentage counter. The default scale is
100:1, so a DQL of greater than 1 will appear as 100%. The notes I¹ve seen
in the past are that it shouldn¹t exceed 5 on a regular basis, but you
should also look at your Disk Transfers/Sec. You shouldn¹t be exceeding 300
or so with the disk layout you have right now, IIRC (110 per disk, count one
as unusable for RAID 5 overhead.)

There are some more precise calculations available, as I know my ballparks
are probably a bit off. Another thing to keep in mind is network speed.
You¹re bounded on both ends by the maximum throughput of the slowest link.
If your file server is on GB, but the desktop is 10MB... TCPChimney can be
a killer on this.

The /t traverses all subdirectories
The /e edits instead of replaces
The /c continues on access denied
The /r removes (as opposed to /g for grant)

Basically what I'm trying to do via a script is remove the Everyone
group from the ACL of about 1000 folders. I just need the correct
command/syntax to build the script and run with it.

Any tips would be great.

Worse is when the original task then
gets
moved off, and now you have a server named DC1 that isn't a DC
anymore, or
something like that.

ntbackup schemes

2008-02-04 Thread Miguel Gonzalez Castaños

Hi,

I've googled a little bit and I'm having a hard time to figure out
which is the best scheme for our needs.

  First the info:

  - We want to have weekly backups of 4 our servers:

 - Exchange SBS 2003. For the time being, I just need to backup the
Storage databases, not the full system, so I'm actually able to recover
individual mailboxes.

 - SQL Server 2005 and 2000 server. Just the database information.

 - File share server.

 - Virtual server, currently running Virtual Server and VMware
Server, but probably will run Vmware Server only.

Our idea is to create a full backup on Monday and create differential
backups in an external USB drive. Right now We won't make any rotate of
USB drives, but the idea is to take the drive on monday (before the full
backup) and rotate it offline.

Full backups one day a week and then perform incremental backups (or
differential backups - I've just seen a difference if you are backing up
Exchange - I guess is the same with SQL Server - differential backups
don't delete log files). However, my big concern is that if any of the
incremental backups goes wrong, you lose up to the only backup that was
good.

I was thinking of creating an incremental backup for each day in
respect to the full backup (not the previous incremental or differential
backup) so I can get individual differential backups.

  Questions:

  - Is it possible to access within the differential backup the files
that were created or modified that day without needing to restore the
full backup?

  - What is the best scheme that I should use for each of the servers
(differential, incremental). Is good my approach of creating an
incremental (or differential) backup from the full backup of monday?

  Thanks

  Miguel

cacls d:\home\testfolder /t /e /c /r Everyone

The /t traverses all subdirectories
The /e edits instead of replaces
The /c continues on access denied
The /r removes (as opposed to /g for grant)

Basically what I'm trying to do via a script is remove the Everyone group
from the ACL of about 1000 folders. I just need the correct command/syntax
to build the script and run with it.

Any tips would be great.

And there is nothing wrong with your way of doing it. I have my OUs set
by area so that I can use GPOs to install software from different
servers based on where they are located (not server based administration
as Ken mentions). It has worked fine for me for years. I was curious if
Ken had a reason for his blanket statement regarding how it shouldn't be
done. If a reason exists I would be interested to know what it is.

Makes a whole lot of sense for me too. Once you create your OU's and
place everything where they need to go then it gets even easier, for me
anyways. So if I need to see all systems in a particular region or
location I navigate to that function or location specific OU and go from
there. Keep it simple, seriously! If you're dumping everything into one
OU then I can see how it'd be a problem.
