I must say, thanks for bringing this product to attention, looks like
exactly the thing a smb like ours can benefit from. Inventory is such a
royal PITA, keeping things legit in case some disgruntled employer wants
to blow a whistle on us (although at this point were severely
overlicensed).. Hope to try a trial of it.

Acronis Ttue Image Echo for Windows and the Enterprise Edition support
SQL backups (according to the datasheet).
Not sure what the separate Acronis SQL backup product does, the
description doesn't make it obvious.

I've noticed that Acronis has a MS SQL backup product which I've not
used yet.

I've got a number of servers using vanilla Acronis True Image for their
backups, these servers also have MS SQL instances on them.

With Acronis being image based, do you trust it for your backups as far
as a safe SQL backup?

I believe VSS Writers are involved when it starts a backup, so I'm
thinking transactions should be flushed to disk. Not 100% sure.

Also considering a command file to stop the sql service(s) and then
restart on backup completion but not sure if that is really necessary.

I know this doesn't address growing log files, just wondering what
others out their are doing if they just have the Acronis True Image as
their backup utility in regards to MS SQL databases.

Comments?

Thanks,

Anthony

RE: Acronis True Image and MS SQL 2000/2005

2008-06-03 Thread Ken Schaefer
I wouldn't stop your SQL Server services.

If the Acronis product /doesn't/ use the VSS writer support that SQL Server
has, then simply schedule a backup to disk inside SQL Server (which will also
truncate the transaction log), and then use Acronis to backup the server
(excluding the active database and log files)

Cheers

No, just using old Norton corporate. Did find that if 'Word wrap' is
turned on in Notepad, though, it slows it down to about half speed.
Bottom line, though, Notepad is worthless for editing large files.

Well, there aren't any really 'good' machines, there are just 'slow' and
'worthless'. I think I'm just going to keep my users using TextPad,
it's so much quicker than notepad. I was just curious, and so was my
supervisor, as to whether anything recently might have caused Notedpad
to become even slower than it was before. Video drivers haven't
changed, and Textpad works almost instantly. Maybe MS decided to
'improve' Notepad, who knows..

Thanks, even liked the 'edlin' suggestionhehe

What if you try copying notepad.exe from a "good" machine to a "bad"
machine. Does the problem go away? If not, then the problem could be a
video driver or something like that, which you could test on one machine
with a rollback.

Notepad question

I know, nobody ever asks a question about notepad, so this is weird.
But since we applied some windows updates this last week, notepad
functions have slowed to a crawl. For instance, we have some folks that
have to do a find & replace operation, notepad has now started to run
quite slowly, line by line, and on a 200K text file may take an hour.
If I do the same function in Textpad, for example, the same function
happens almost instantly. Not that it's a critical issue, but has
anyone seen that or know why it might be?

Thanks,

David

On a similar note, the TechNet group is having a party on Wednesday

down for part of TechEd 2008 IT Pro (next week) just for socializing and
such. I have a code for a day pass for all things TechEd for next
Wednesday if anyone will be in the area and would be interested.

You could use Process Explorer to see if it gives any clues. Also, if
.TXT files are associated with Notepad you could look in the registry
for entries concerning .TXT - maybe something else is trying to happen
at the same time. Maybe it's some indexing or searching going on...

Thanks,

David

Acronis True Image and MS SQL 2000/2005

2008-06-03 Thread Anthony
I've noticed that Acronis has a MS SQL backup product which I've not used
yet.

I've got a number of servers using vanilla Acronis True Image for their
backups, these servers also have MS SQL instances on them.

With Acronis being image based, do you trust it for your backups as far as a
safe SQL backup?

I believe VSS Writers are involved when it starts a backup, so I'm thinking
transactions should be flushed to disk. Not 100% sure.

Also considering a command file to stop the sql service(s) and then restart
on backup completion but not sure if that is really necessary.

I know this doesn't address growing log files, just wondering what others out
their are doing if they just have the Acronis True Image as their backup
utility in regards to MS SQL databases.

Comments?

Thanks,

Anthony

RE: FSRM restore or export/import?

2008-06-03 Thread Miller Bonnie L .
Wow, you can do an export/import on the templates? Do you have a link for that
or a quick how-to?

On the migration of settings, I've done this on a couple of servers so far with
mixed results. I've been able to get the template files (the .xml files) to
copy, but never the .md files as they are always in use. Tried starting a
server up with the two FSRM related services disabled, and they still bark
about being in use when I try to copy them out of the System volume information
folder structure. I seem to remember running a bunch of tools (systinernals)
to see what was holding the file open as well, but couldn't find anything.
Since quota is usually some kind of filter driver (kernel level), it might not
be an easy task. But, if you find a way around that, I'd love to know what
works.

And, when going from x86 to x64, even though I could get the xml files to copy,
they just don't seem to work. When done, same server name, same installed
stuff, same drive letters, etc, only difference (and it can be a big one) was
from x86 to x64. Files were copied over, but settings just wouldn't show up in
FSRM tools. Ended up recreating these ones.

Anyway, when I can get the .xml files across and the drive letters are the
same, it gives me the templates, but not the quotas. I've not tried it at all
when changing drive letters or server names. We've been keeping spreadsheets
of anything that is a quota "exception" and they've had to be re-entered as
part of any migration that was not an image based backup/restore.

I don't want to complain too much as FSRM is a HUGE improvement over the
earlier quota tool, but I would love to see MS do a little more work on it. A
migration tool or method of some kind for this sort of thing would be really
helpful.

Subject: FSRM restore or export/import?

W2K3 SP2 R2

I'm planning on migrating a file server into a cluster. It currently has FSRM.
I know you can export/import the templates, but what about the quotas
themselves? I can't find anything that talks about restoring the existing
configuration to a different server. I did find references to the \System
Volume Information\SRM\quota.md and quota.xml files. But I'm not sure restoring
those to each volume would work. At least nothing I found explicitly states
that.

Anyone successfully do this before?

Thanks,

Chris Bodnar

RE: Notepad question

2008-06-03 Thread David Florea, SysAdmin

Thanks,

RE: Wireless Analyzer

2008-06-03 Thread Marc Maiffret
In one of my training courses we cover wireless auditing, and hacking, and
one of the public tools we typically recommend people to use is Backtrack
which you can download for free at
http://www.remote-exploit.org/backtrack.html. Simply burn it to a cd, boot
your laptop with it, and then use the tools to discover broadcast and
"hidden" AP's, all for free. If your default laptop wireless card is not
detected properly you can buy a cheap one from bestbuy that will work just
fine.

We do not use wireless at all to avoid regulatory issues that are not worth
it. That said, PCI standards require that we use a wireless analyzer to
ensure that no rogue WAP is set up on our network. Makes sense. I have
looked at several and the price ranges all over the place. Since all we need
to do is look for unauthorized wireless, I don' t need all the features of
most of these.

I am curious who else is working on PCI and has similar issues or approaches
for this piece.

It is a good security measure to take to use only what you need to so as
not
to increase your organizations attack surface and therefore potential to
be
compromised.

Take myITforum.com for example... it is very pretty, in a bits tossed
all
over the webpage kind of way, but it also has a potential security flaw
which can be found in about 20 seconds of visiting the website.

The majority of companies on NTSYSADMIN can probably be compromised
because
of the overt overuse of "cool web" functionality that adds no user
experience except for glitz.

RE: Wireless Analyzer

2008-06-03 Thread Kelsay, Mark
Can't you just walk around with a laptop with wireless enabled and see
if it picks up anything? This is what I did at my last job and found
our finance director had put an access point in his office. I logged
into it (he never changed the default password) and set an access
password so he could not connect to it anymore. Surprisingly he never
asked me to fix it for him since he knew that wireless was not allowed
in the office.

We do not use wireless at all to avoid regulatory issues that are not
worth it. That said, PCI standards require that we use a wireless
analyzer to ensure that no rogue WAP is set up on our network. Makes
sense. I have looked at several and the price ranges all over the place.
Since all we need to do is look for unauthorized wireless, I don' t need
all the features of most of these.

I am curious who else is working on PCI and has similar issues or
approaches for this piece.

there are a few decent free or almost free solutions for detecting wifi ...
but remember that you need to check a/b/g/n now, so you'll need at least one
adapter/antenna for each set

Wireless on our network would be "unauthorized," which is what I was
referring to. I have never heard of that application. I will look into it.

We use it for out Youth program at Church.
We have netted about $700 over the past two years.
Pretty good engine. Not Google but pretty good.
Has a tendancy to lose the who it is giving the search credit for with IE7.

So one of Directors sent out an email that there is a new search engine that
gives .01 per search to your organization if you use the engine. Has anyone
ever heard of Good Search?

The success stories and the affiliates they state utilize the engine, on
their sites have no link or information posted about Good Search.

If you have or know of someone that has heard of this engine, could you drop
me a note?

RE: Wireless Analyzer

2008-06-03 Thread Erik Goldoff
if you're not using wireless *at all* then you don't need to look for
'unauthorized' wireless, you just need to look for ANY wireless. You could
start out as simple as a PC with a high gain omni-wireless antenna and
netstumbler. Depending on the size of your location/office/campus, multiple
machines around your perimeter as well as within your center would be fairly
comprehensive

The majority of companies on NTSYSADMIN can probably be compromised

of the overt overuse of "cool web" functionality that adds no user

It is a good security measure to take to use only what you need to so as
not
to increase your organizations attack surface and therefore potential to
be
compromised.

Take myITforum.com for example... it is very pretty, in a bits tossed
all
over the webpage kind of way, but it also has a potential security flaw
which can be found in about 20 seconds of visiting the website.

The majority of companies on NTSYSADMIN can probably be compromised
because
of the overt overuse of "cool web" functionality that adds no user
experience except for glitz.

RE: DRAC Issue

2008-06-03 Thread Jon B. Lewis
I have done the flash in BIOS thing both ways. No luck either way. I
wasn't at all familiar with the racadm until yesterday. Still don't
claim to be an expert but I figured out the firmware update process
(even had success with it on a working card so I was sure I was doing it
right) but still no luck. I've tried the Windows installer and the
command line thing with no luck on either. I'm going to see if my
on-site person can swap some cards around and see where I get.

Sounds like you already checked this, but I know I've had trouble
updating the firmware on these if I had disabled the flash in the bios
(#3), so you might check that out, along with the USB mention while
you're in there.

That being said, I've had 2 of these cards fail in the last 9 months,
each one in a different way--they were both from a set of 3 servers we
purchased around last September/October and we have about 12 PE 2950s
total. Neither had partly responded like yours is doing, but I wouldn't
rule it out as a symptom. One hung the entire system when rebooting to
the point that the card had to come out of the slot to boot at all.
Another one I found had quit working when the firmware wouldn't update
at all--Noticed that it would quickly report an error shortly after the
bios screen during booting, but it blipped right past and booted anyway
(unlike the first failure). Went through a similar rigamarole on the
phone before they sent a new card on the second one. I'm not very
familiar with racadm--I usually do the Windows-based firmware updates,
but the Dell tech I spoke with tried updating the firmware with
something command-level as well, which would also fail--have they tried
that on yours?

One thing of note that I mentioned to the tech after the second call is
that the DRAC card has two green lights on it inside the case and I
noticed the "bad" ones only had one green light that was coming on.
Once the good on was in, both lights come on (I think one blinks, but I
don't recall exactly).

Does anyone know why a DRAC (2950 server if that matters) won't display
the web interface? I can work on it locally with racadm but I can't
connect to it remotely via racadm. I can also SSH into it and run
racadm commands. The firmware is outdated but I can't get the firmware
to update and I've tried several different ways. We've cut the power to
the server and reseated the card.

When attempting to update the firmware I get this business. As near as
I can tell each of these conditions are met.

1. Appropriate IPMI and managed node drivers must be installed and
enabled.
2. On Windows, WMI services must be enabled and running.
3. RAC Virtual Flash must not be in use by the operating system
   or another application.
4. USB must be enabled.

I did a chat with Dell Tech Support earlier and he wasn't much help.
Well, no help really.

Subject: Still can't replicate (was Hosed DNS??)

Still looking for the cause.
When I do a "DCDIAG" on the one that hasn't been replicated from
everything except "frsevent" passes. On the DC that hasn't received the
replication I get the error that replication hasn't occurred for a month
with the errors 1753 and 1256 also the "frsevent" fails.

A netdom query fsmo returns the proper information.

If I nslookup the domain, the results return both DC's.

"Net Share" shows both DC's sharing their "Sysvol".

"Netstat" shows each has open connections to the other.

When I run a "netdiag" I get a "[FATAL} Could not open
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\netlogon.dns for reading. [FATAL} no DNS
servers have the DNS records for this DC registered." errors. When I
look in DNS on both servers, I can see records for both DC's.

Normal DNS functions seem to work perfectly. I can sit at a workstation
and ping another by name, My workstations can find "Yahoo" etc.

Any of these clues give anyone any ideas?

THANKS!!
Jim

Thanks Ed,

i managed to lock myself out from making any changes to that service
using subinacl :)

I ended up delete the security reg key and then SEP installed fine.

I guess WinXP reset the security to default of the key is missing
allthouhg a new one wasn't recreated.

thanks

Try looking at Subinacl.exe (SubInAcl version 5.2.3790.1180)

Here is the services default DACL on XP SP2

C:\>subinacl /verbose=1 /service WZCSVC /display=dacl

+Service WZCSVC

/grant=system=lqsetopiu

I'm trying to installed SEP 11 and get an error when trying to stop the
WZC service.

Symantec has an article about it but no real solution. They mention two
applications that change service privileges and suggest to install the
latest version. I don't have any of those.

"Symantec has confirmed that during the installation of third-party
wireless management software the software adjusts the operating system's
default security policy for the Wireless Zero Configuration Service.
Some of this software removes the necessary rights for the System
account to access the service. Symantec Endpoint Protection requires the
service to be stopped during installation so it can properly register
components with the operating system. "

How do I the necessary rights to the system account to stop services?

regards,

Osama

If you do a repair install, you get to put a key in, so I suppose that would
fix the issue. But I'd do that as a last resort...

Hi there, I have been testing out 64 bit W2K3 R2 with SP2 integrated. Is there
a way to convert it to a non trial version without having to blow the box away,
say run the install over top and do a repair with good media and product code?

TIA

Escalate the case with Dell. Push hard for a level 2 tech the level 1 can
help for simple things but this really sounds like the DRAC is having major
