Basically it is like a feature to feature comparison.

we would like to have a more independent and fair comparison.
Thanks.

RE: Hyper V and VMWare Comparison

2008-06-30 Thread Ken Schaefer
I suspect it would be exactly the same speed using either Virtual Centre or
System Center Virtual Machine Manager. You just grab your template and away you
go...

Building a VM using PXE will be slightly problematic using Hyper-V, because the
new "synthetic" 10gbps NICs don't show up until you install the Integration
Services. SO you need to use a low performance Legacy Nic, and then swap them
out after the server is built.

Cheers

RE: Hyper V and VMWare Comparison

2008-06-30 Thread Ken Schaefer
There is public information (e.g. max ram supported, max CPUs supported) etc
available on the various vendor's websites.

If you want other information, it's probably not freely available (as I
mentioned, we have a detailed comparison between a number of virtualizaion
products - Hyper-V, ESX, Xen, Sun Containers etc), but I can't share it because
it's my company's IP, not mine.

If you have a specific area(s) you want looked up, I'm happy to do that though

Um, how do you think certificates work? They use public/private key technology
to exchange a symmetric key pair. Given enough time and processing power you
can break any TLS based encryption mechanism as well :-)

Migrating to new domain

I am in the process of migrating to a new AD forest. The user accounts have
already been created in both domains, they have not been migrated so there is
no sid history. I what to get your suggestions on the best way to migrate the
workstations over and have the users preserve their current desktop and app
settings. I am not sure the ADMT will work because of the SID history.

I realize the "gotcha" with respect to system recovery at a branch. What we

the user self file restore feature useable, as advertised.

Thanks.

Re: Image - destructive load

2008-06-30 Thread Steve Pruitt
Rick, since you plan to use SMS you need to ask your questions in the mssms
mailing list (see
http://www.myitforum.com/lists/#Microsoft_Systems_Management_Server_(SMS)_List
to subscribe). That's where you'll find experts on using MDT 2008 (MS
Deployment Toolkit) with SMS. That provides the tools you need for your
rollout, including saving and restoring user data through USMT. MDT makes use
of other technologies and tools where appropriate, while making them even
easier to use.

Not necessarily. The image is something we've had for some time. Somehow,
the baseline has become "skewed" and needs to be brought back into compliance.
The image is used on every new load today, but it is a manual method.

We plan to use SMS to deploy the new image.

Most, if not all the applications will be on the new image. Any others will
be deployed via SMS packages.

Network is pretty robust and supports multicast.

Yes, we've considered the user profiles/states and are now looking at USMT
and other tools to take care of this. (As for the analysis - yes, we have -
it's really pretty scary to be honest with you. We scanned one subnet and
extrapolated the size of that subnet out and came to almost 108TB of data - no
that's not a typo. Obviously, not scientific, but a lot of data none-the-less.)

Right, we've analysed the applications using SMS. We've listed most and have
started creating packages to accommodate them. Anything that we can't create a
package for, we're testing on the Terminal Server.

I think we have a good understanding, just want to ensure we don't miss
anything. What you have listed for the last couple of steps is pretty much
what I had listed as well.

  Appreciate your comments,

already have an image, so you've jumped the gun a bit here haven't you?

What deployment methods/technologies do you have available?

How will you lay down the applications afterwards?

  What is your network like?

You obviously have a user data issue (not just documents, but also
preferences, configuration, settings etc) - have you done any analysis to see
what is out there?

Usually you'd start with an analysis phase - look at what's out there, and
what you have available.

Then do a design for how it's going to work

Then do a Proof of Concept

  Then do a Pilot

  Then do your full rollout

What deployment methods/technologies do you have available?

How will you lay down the applications afterwards?

What is your network like?

You obviously have a user data issue (not just documents, but also
preferences, configuration, settings etc) - have you done any analysis to
see what is out there?

Usually you'd start with an analysis phase - look at what's out there, and
what you have available.

Then do a design for how it's going to work

Then do a Proof of Concept

Then do a Pilot

Then do your full rollout

Cheers

Ken

Re: VMWare in DR site

2008-06-30 Thread Durf
Hi Wei;

A slightly lower-tech way of doing it described below:

I have a client who is doing this using SunGard's DR services (they provide
replacement hardware under contract, as well as phones and desktops). It's a
small subsidiary of a large insurance company. We determined they have a
12-24-hour Recovery Time requirement, with a 1-day Recovery Point objective.

Given that, we image their servers (4) using Symantec BESR to a NAS unit,
that then transfers the images to USB drives. We then have Iron Mountain
pick up the drive images weekly, along with their backup tapes. Last
night's backup tape also always goes offsite.

We conducted a successful DR test last year, restoring the images onto the
physical hardware. This year, BESR has better support for VMWare, so we
will be experimenting with saving the client some $$$ by dropping the number
of SunGard provided servers from 4 to 2 and using BESR to recover to MS
Virtual Server.

This works well with the client's RT and RP requirements, as we were able to
restore in about 18 hours, including getting Internet services and remote
access up and working. We so far are choosing not to use a direct pipe to
replicate traffic to SunGard, as the Iron Mountain solution works well with
their requirements - IM will drop tapes and drives directly to the SunGard
facility - and SunGard charges quite a lot for direct data sync.

Yours,
Durf

This would make sense, in a way, in that the 3400cl is replacing a
2948G-L3. But, again, the 2950T-24 worked with the 3400cl where the
2950T-48 didn't.

Nice to know. I just checked - Putty can do a serial port. I've just
installed that on the really old Sony Win9x laptop we upgraded to
Win2k to deal with this. I think that'll come in handy.

Google says that first line indicates an EtherChannel misconfiguration -
one side is configured for EtherChannel and the other isn't.

BTW I find that HyperTerminal Private Edition works better than the
HyperTerminal shipped with Windows. It appears to no longer be freeware,
but the last freeware edition (6.3) can be located via Google.

We use SecureCRT (http://www.vandyke.com/products/securecrt/index.html);
it's a much better product and works better for our needs (we're a
reseller of used network infrastructure equipment). If you don't need
the SSH features the plain CRT product is cheaper.

You shouldn't have any problems then. It is more of a track record on
WEP/WPA and related that is to worry about, but you can always handle
that when the time comes. Currently the only WPA2 that can be cracked is
that which uses pre-shared keys.

RE: WiFi setup

How would you use Radius/802.1x technology without certificates?

If you are forced to WPA/WPA2 use a Max length pass phrase with
randomized Upper lower, Numbers, Special Characters (you know the
drill). It might take the sting out of the crackers Anything with
pre-shared keys is crackable given enough time and processor power. I
don't think 802.1x with Radius is susceptible, provided you are using
certificates.

You shouldn't have any problems then. It is more of a track record on
WEP/WPA and related that is to worry about, but you can always handle
that when the time comes. Currently the only WPA2 that can be cracked is
that which uses pre-shared keys.

Imaging Software

2008-06-30 Thread Paul DaSilva
Good Afternoon,
I'm looking in getting some new imaging/cloning software for
workstations. I've used the Symantec Ghost Suite previously, but I'm open to
different vendors. What are some of your favorites? Any suggestions, comments?

The last line should read:

 channel-group 1 mode active

The first line isn't needed, they default to active mode.

I wouldn't worry about separate IPSEC if your Wi-Fi hardware supports WPA2 and
uses a 802.1x (Radius server) for client authentication.

In fact, if you go for 802.11n, you're required to use WPA2 to get the "n"
throughput boost.

But macs are easily spoofed. Any determined attacker would be sniffing the
airwaves to snag a mac thats accessing the network and would spoof it to get
around that barrier. All MAC filtering would do is add administrative overhead.

RE: WiFi setup

2008-06-30 Thread Carl Houseman
I wouldn't worry about separate IPSEC if your Wi-Fi hardware supports WPA2 and
uses a 802.1x (Radius server) for client authentication.

In fact, if you go for 802.11n, you're required to use WPA2 to get the "n"
throughput boost.

Re: Hoping to find someone tonight...

2008-06-30 Thread Phil Brutsche
It looks to me like you are running into a PAgP (aka Cisco EtherChannel)
vs LACP configuration issue.

The 2950 series supports both and defaults to PAgP; any and all current
HP switches only support LACP. HP dropped PAgP support a long time ago
and IIRC the 3400cl switches *never* supported PAgP.

Based on your posted configuration, if you want to do link aggregation
with an between a Cisco and HP (or any other non-Cisco) switch the
configuration for Gi0/1 and Gi0/2 should look something like this:

interface GigabitEthernet0/1
 switchport trunk pruning vlan none
 switchport mode trunk
 switchport nonegotiate
 flowcontrol send off
 channel-protocol lacp
 channel-group 1 mode on

You will also need to make sure the HP switch is configured for LACP;
this snippet will configure port 23 and 24 as a LAG (HP uses the term
"trunk") using the LACP protocol:

int 23-24 lacp active
trunk 23-24 trk1 lacp

The port that has the trunk is gi 0/1 on each of the 2950T-48s.

The config bits that I believe to be are relevant are:

spanning-tree mode pvst
no spanning-tree optimize bpdu transmission
spanning-tree extend system-id

interface Port-channel1
 switchport trunk pruning vlan none
 switchport mode trunk
 switchport nonegotiate
 flowcontrol send off

interface GigabitEthernet0/1

2008-06-30 Thread Nelligan, Steve M (Facilities & Services)

I was attempting to install the Windows XP SP3 on my laptop and got the
following error:
"The file or directory c:\$Secure is corrupt and unreadable. Please
run the Chkdsk utility."

I backed out of SP3 and run chkdsk and found nothing, on reboot; I
received an error that there was no Paging File. I attempted to
recreate it but I still get the error on reboots.

I am also still getting the c:\$Secure is corrupt and unreadable.

Has anyone else had this problem with SP3 and found a workaround. From
Google, it appears to be an IE7 issue, but I don't have IE7 installed.

Thanks in advance for any help,
-Steve Nelligan

RE: portable printers

2008-06-30 Thread Kyle Plummer
We use HP DeskJet 460 (and previously the 450) model for our audit staff. They
do not print as much since we have gone paperless, but we've rarely had any
problems with them. We usually wear out the rollers on them well before they
break. They've held up well (along with the Fujitsu S300 and LinkSys WRT54G
routers) despite being used (abused even) on a daily basis.

into our rolling laptops bags.

I don't know how much they get used but they were "gotta haves" at the time.
Never had to replace or service one so that's either a good sign or an

Anyone have a good review of any portable printers out there?  We have a
marketing guy that's on the road quite a bit, and wants to be able to print
from his vehicle if need be.  This is not an absolute requirement, but an

RE: WiFi setup

2008-06-30 Thread Phillip Partipilo
But macs are easily spoofed. Any determined attacker would be sniffing the
airwaves to snag a mac thats accessing the network and would spoof it to get
around that barrier. All MAC filtering would do is add administrative
overhead.

RE: WiFi setup

2008-06-30 Thread Erik Goldoff
Ideally financial institutions should use a TS/Citrix type solution as one
'layer of the onion' to provide secure application access, rather than local
application execution with confidential data traversing the networks, adding
this to a wifi subnet if needed should be simple. Layered security
controls are definitely more secure than any single approach.

Agreed.

But I’d personally keep the confidential data off the wireless all together.
If Joe Employee needs his laptop to go on the internet, then he can hop on
the wireless and stay off the main network. That way, his laptop never sees
customer data (and why should it need to for a bank)?

WINXP machine account

2008-06-30 Thread aci
TIA for any and all ideas...

I have an XP workstation that was in the process of being renamed and joined to
the domain when it encountered a duplicate name on the network issue. Bottom
line, I have now have an XP workstation that I can not log into, as the machine
account as it is either out of sync with the domain, or not found. I do not
have the local admin password either. I had it (set it myself) but I have a
feeling that there is no admin account yet established with a password as the
domain enforces a 6 character minimum, and the new password is probably blank.
I tried UBCD tools disk to reset the local admin password. It looks like its
working, but I still can not log on. Any ideas?

Thanks,

I was messing around with cracking APs and its pretty easy to clone the MACs of
devices connected to the AP to gain access when they are using MAC filtering.

I have been getting the MAC's from all the other devices on the WAN. We are
greating VLAN 127. It is the default vlan and will get to the internet only.
If you don't have a MAC on the ACL you get a 127 dhcp address and pumped to the
internet only.
It isn't fully functional yet but it is coming.

I would agree with Shook, sounds like an STP problem. Make sure you
don't have 'spanning-tree portfast' turned on for the uplink ports.

I second that, the survey to see where to put them is key.

We are having very good luck using certs on our roamers and then radius
authentication via Cisco 1200 using the certs. So no one can connect to our
AP’s unless they are a domain computer and they are in the OU that issues the
cert. One downside is that you do not get seamless authentication between AP’s.
So as they roam there is a second or two of offline before the new AP
authenticates their cert….they have gotten used to it.

Just went through this and we moved into a new building back in February. My
council is go ahead and cable for "general AP placement" with generous service
loops while the building is being cabled. Then wait until you move in and get
settled b\c you have no idea how your wireless signal is going to behave until
after you move in; i.e. get a site survey done. Definitely do PoE switches and
Cat6 cabling. Lastly, feel free to ping me off list and I'll be more than

Yeah.
I am pretty good on everything with the exception that the new datacenter will
have to have WiFi built in
I am looking at 802.11g for now but I thought n was coming out.
Does anyone have any comments on how to WiFi a 4000sqft building with 3 floors?

Nod 32 & developer machine question

2008-06-30 Thread Steve Kelsay
I have a developer that claims the IMON in NOD32 is interfering with her
program calls. Are there any NOD32 experts out there that can tell me
if we can put exceptions into the IMON that would allow her calls to go
through, or somehow allow them to go through some other way?

I really do not want to disable my internet virus monitor.

RE: New SAN Selection Question

integrates with ESX as well if not better than all the others.

I highly recommend adding Xiotech to the list. Their new "ISE" based SAN
(specifically look at the Emprise 7000) is impressive. Played with it at
Storage World in Orlando last month, and was highly impressed.

New SAN Selection Question

I'm looking for a methodology to evaluate new Storage Area Network solutions
for our enterprise environment. We have tight power, weight, and support
requirements and have narrowed the field to 8 vendors based on a variety of
these (and other) threshold requirements. The challenge now is that the vendor
submissions/solutions are mostly so close to each other that a paper evaluation
fails to significantly differentiate them. We are on a tight schedule
(management - don't ask) and it looks like we will end up testing I/O on
solutions from all 8 vendors (Dell, EMC, IBM, NetApp, LeftHand Networks, Sun,
Overland, HP).

We are an ESX shop - is it enough to just configure the eval SANs (the same)
for our environment and then run Iometer tests from a client to the primary
SAN(s) or is there a better or more thorough approach? We want to use
mirroring/replication at the SAN level between redundant SANs for high
availability but that can get expensive so I am open to any ideas here as well.

I know this is a big question with sketchy details but there are a lot of
moving parts and I was just wondering if someone had done this and could
provide insight.

Thanks

RE: WiFi setup

2008-06-30 Thread Benjamin Zachary - Lists
Wireless and Credit do not go together :-)

Wireless N is out in the 'home' markets and it works reasonable well, but I
haven't tried doing anything like jumping spots. Most people use commercial
grade products like Cisco devices, which have POE for easier deployment and
can bridge or hotspot depending on your needs. You also can roam access
points with that type of setup. Im sure wimax and others make similar stuff
but I have only used 3com (802.11b originally) and then cisco for commercial
locations with multiple units.
