FUD? Fear, uncertainty and doubt? Why would these guys gain from spreading that?

To the original poster, the vulnerability appears to be that cache poisoning
can occur. If your own DNS servers can not be accessed by malicious users, then
I think you're safe for the time being, but of course any upstream DNS server
might not be safe...

There are reports on /. of the BIND patches having a significant performance
impact. But I haven't seen any issues yet with the MS patch.

I am looking for an application to run on a server, that would
open a network port and respond to a port query.

Thinking that something like a telnet server, assigned to answer

Any ideas?

Nmap -sS -P0 -p 8080 Target_IP_Address will also help you.

MS Project Server 2003, it's flaky. We're on about our 4th installation of
it, when a fellow admin of mine went to training (official MS training) for
it, he was told by the instructor that if you get a stable installation of
Project Server by the 4th or 5th installation of it you are doing good. Our
unwritten rule for when a ticket comes in from a user on Project Server is
that we wait a couple of days and the issue mysteriously clears up..

Take a look at Project.net We looked at this product and really really
liked it, but couldn't get budget approval for it. If you're brave, they
have free option available (open source).

I know HIPAA is involved, though still poorly enforced, for all doctors

additional requirements or awareness that is needed for offices using
wireless networks. Until they actually start strictly enforcing HIPAA I

2008-07-09 Thread Joe Fox
Shook:

Based on my experience at my last gig (working in Long Term Healthcare),
wireless should not be an issue as long as you are using some form of
encryption. Since most wireless cards/AP/Routers support WPA2 I would just
turn that up on the AP for anything internal. We had quite a few mobile
users that would travel from facility to facility and using the wireless in
facility. We used Cisco Aironet 1300's with Cisco ACS, hooked into our AD
domain so that they had to use LEAP to get on to the wireless, and it worked
just fine for us.

MS Project Server 2003, it's flaky. We're on about our 4th installation
of it, when a fellow admin of mine went to training (official MS
training) for it, he was told by the instructor that if you get a stable
installation of Project Server by the 4th or 5th installation of it you
are doing good. Our unwritten rule for when a ticket comes in from a
user on Project Server is that we wait a couple of days and the issue
mysteriously clears up..

Take a look at Project.net We looked at this product and really really
liked it, but couldn't get budget approval for it. If you're brave,
they have free option available (open source).

That should do the trick. Just make sure that you are using the highest
level of encryption afforded by the devices. Also take all the other
necessary precautions, hidding the SSID, turning off beaconing, etc. Of
course this means that you'll have to manually configure the wireless on
each workstation, but that can just means more hours that can be billed for,
and that can't be all bad ;)

2008-07-09 Thread Ziots, Edward
Shook:

Based on my experience at my last gig (working in Long Term Healthcare),
wireless should not be an issue as long as you are using some form of
encryption. Since most wireless cards/AP/Routers support WPA2 I would
just turn that up on the AP for anything internal. We had quite a few
mobile users that would travel from facility to facility and using the
wireless in facility. We used Cisco Aironet 1300's with Cisco ACS,
hooked into our AD domain so that they had to use LEAP to get on to the
wireless, and it worked just fine for us.

Leap is so insecure and breakable it isn't funny, I would go with WPA2

RE: HIPPA and wireless

2008-07-09 Thread Glen Johnson
Joe.

Apparently you didn't read any of the wireless discussion on here last
week.

See this link for details about hiding SSID and such. Waste of time.

http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/index.php?p=43

SSID hiding: There is no such thing as SSID hiding. You're only hiding
SSID beaconing on the Access Point. There are 4 other mechanisms that
also broadcast the SSID over the 2.4 or 5 GHz spectrum. The 4 mechanisms
are; probe requests, probe responses, association requests, and
re-association requests. Essentially, youre talking about hiding 1 of 5
SSID broadcast mechanisms. Nothing is hidden and all youve achieved is
cause problems for Wi-Fi roaming when a client jumps from AP to AP.
Hidden SSIDs also makes wireless LANs less user friendly. You dont need
to take my word for it. Just ask Robert Moskowitz who is the Senior
Technical Director of ICSA Labs in his white paper Debunking the myth of
SSID hiding
http://www.icsalabs.com/icsa/docs/html/communities/WLAN/wp_ssid_hiding.
pdf .

Sidenote, it was recently talked about here that hiding the SSID is
worthless. I'm too lazy to search back thru my emails but somebody
posted a link to iirc a zdnet hosted article that listed a list of the
top wifi security fallacies, where mac filtering was #1, and hiding
ssid was on that list too.

I have one user that is having trouble logging off our TS. When she closes
her app it is supposed to close the session but it doesnt. It only happens
to her, she just gets a blue screen and has to ctrl-alt-end to log off. I
looked at the logs on the server and her PC but dont see anything and I
tried deleting her profile on the TS to no avail. Anyone have any
suggestions to what I should look for? It happens no matter what PC she
uses.

Re: HIPPA and wireless

2008-07-09 Thread Joe Fox
Ok, so I missed that thread. I already had advised Shook to use the highest
level of encryption afforded by the device in my followup and in my original
post said that most devices support WPA2. If you're using the highest level
of encryption afforded by the device, in this case WPA2, then hiding the
SSID can't hurt. In George Ou's articles on ZDNet, when he was referring to
hiding SSID's as a security measure, I believe that he was referring to
using that as your only security measure, without any type of encryption
(read as Open Network). Same goes for MAC address filtering - not
effective if there is no encryption is involved.

As far as LEAP being useless, it is only useless when combined with weak
passwords. Since we were using Cisco ACS to hook into AD, our password
policy required strong passwords, with a very aggressive password expiration
and history policy.

Hopefully this clears up any confusion that may have been in my initial
responses.

That should do the trick. Just make sure that you are using the highest

each workstation, but that can just means more hours that can be billed for,

Large Environment Backup solutions, was WMI Query

BTW, I am very happy with my current employer's solution. They are running
EMC Networker and from the Exchange server perspective it works seemlessly,
even with our 8 node Exchange 2k3 cluster.. :) EMC still hasn't resolved an

passive node hasn't resolved.

I imagine our dedicated storage team is on such lists. I stay as far

I respect the software, but would switch in a heartbeat, except for two
 things:

  1) the cost to continue using is is ridiculously low - maintenance is
something like $200/year for the 10 or so servers we use it for - that

RE: HIPPA and wireless

2008-07-09 Thread Glen Johnson
Sure it can hurt.

I found out the hard way that a default vista setup wont connect to an
ap with a hidden ssid. I know that can be changed but no sense hiding
the SSID if it creates problems and give no security gains.

Clients also seem to authenticate way faster if the SSID is broadcast.

Ok, so I missed that thread. I already had advised Shook to use the
highest level of encryption afforded by the device in my followup and in
my original post said that most devices support WPA2. If you're using
the highest level of encryption afforded by the device, in this case
WPA2, then hiding the SSID can't hurt. In George Ou's articles on
ZDNet, when he was referring to hiding SSID's as a security measure, I
believe that he was referring to using that as your only security
measure, without any type of encryption (read as Open Network). Same
goes for MAC address filtering - not effective if there is no encryption
is involved.

As far as LEAP being useless, it is only useless when combined with weak
passwords. Since we were using Cisco ACS to hook into AD, our password
policy required strong passwords, with a very aggressive password
expiration and history policy.

Hopefully this clears up any confusion that may have been in my initial
responses.

Re: HIPPA and wireless

2008-07-09 Thread Joe Fox
Where did I ever say that leap was the way to go? I just stated that it was
implemented at my last gig, using strong passwords and an aggressive
password change/history policy for the wireless users. I wasn't the one
that set it up, and the C-Level did not want changes made to it due to the
amount that they had spent on the infrastructure based on the
recommendations of the prior network admin.

Now had we been newly implementing wireless in our facilities, I'd have gone
the WPA2 route and used the built in NICs in the notebooks and WPA2
supported APs. For an added layer of security I'd use self-signed SSL Cert
and configure PEAP via GPO. Another option is using IAS with a self-signed
cert as well.

To each their own.

I think the greatest threat would be external, but the same risk
exists internally. A well crafted trojan could potentially manipulate
the same information on internal systems.

Because so many successful threats rely on tricking and spoofing, I
would worry at this point that it will become a popular exploit.

Looks like that will work:

By default, the rights and permissions that are granted to the Power Users
group include those rights and permissions that are required to allow
members of the Power Users group to modify computer-wide settings, to
install drivers, and to run (or install) non-certified programs.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825069

Note that the title of this KB article is: A member of the Power Users group
may be able to gain administrator rights and permissions in Windows Server
2003, Windows 2000, or Windows XP -- Power Users can elevate themselves to
local admins without too much hacking. See: Power Users are Admins who have
not made themselves admins yet
http://blogs.technet.com/jesper_johansson/archive/2006/03/12/421870.aspx

and also this dicussion:
Full Disclosure: MS Windows Screensaver Privilege Escalation
http://seclists.org/fulldisclosure/2004/Nov/1184.html

On Windows XP all releases, when you replace, or change the screensaver
displayed on the login screen with a specially crafted version designed to
execute programs, those programs are launched under the SYSTEM SID, IE:
they are given automatically the highest access level avalible to Windows.
This level is not accessible even to administrators.

This flaw is important because while one would need Power User privledges
or above to change the Login Screensaver, ... A similar flaw exists in
Win2K, but Microsoft has ignored it.

All a power user has to do is make the login screensaver run CMD.EXE and s/he
has a command-prompt with system privs.

MSKB 825069 (above) offers two workarounds: 1. Don't use Power User's Group and
2. Only run MS Certified applications.

Take a look at the printer drivers on the client. If the client has a
printer where the driver does not play well with TS it could cause the
blue screen you describe. I have seen this before. Remove the printers
from the client so that they won't map when the user logs into your TS,
then if successful add them back one at a time until you find the
culprit driver.

I have one user that is having trouble logging off our TS. When
she closes her app it is supposed to close the session but it doesnt. It
only happens to her, she just gets a blue screen and has to ctrl-alt-end
to log off. I looked at the logs on the server and her PC but dont see
anything and I tried deleting her profile on the TS to no avail. Anyone
have any suggestions to what I should look for? It happens no matter
what PC she uses.

Ken and Michael: Pagefile is on the C drive, plenty of space on drive and
pagefile is bigger that physical RAM.
Ran hardware diagnostics last Friday and again today and after I removed the

Came in this morning to a KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR BSOD.

It defines your bugcode as “0xC185, or STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR: improper

I thought this one looked familiar, and I dug back in my notes going WY

Thanks for the excellent input Ken and Bonnie.
I've been researching bugcheck codes and running diagnostics. Found some power
supply errors which I corrected and also had a ECC error on Bank 2 Dimm A,
first documented on 08/2006. Switched dimms around and immediately produced
multiple errors on the same bank. Removed that bank of dimms and had high hopes
that would correct the issue. BSOD 20 minutes later.Down loadingg Open Mange
now so I can attempt to clear errors and look deeper. Still no dmp files.

Wireless LAN security hall of shame

 1. MAC filtering:

 2. SSID hiding:

 3. LEAP authentication:

The use of Cisco LEAP authentication continues to be the single biggest
mistake that corporations make with their wireless LAN because they leave
themselves wide open to attack. Cisco still tells their customers that
LEAP is fine so long as strong passwords are used. The problem is that
strong passwords are an impossibility for humans to deal with. If you
doubt this, try a password audit of all the users in your organization and
see how long it takes to crack 99% of all passwords. 99% of organizations
will flunk any password audit for most of their users within hours. Any
attempt to enforce strong passwords will result in passwords written on
sticky notes. Since Joshua Wright released a toolthat can crackLEAP with
lighting speed, Cisco was forced to come out with a better alternative to
LEAP and they came up with an upgradeto LEAP calledEAP-FAST.
Unfortunately, EAP-FAST still falls short in security with its default
installation. Although Cisco makes LEAP and EAP-FAST freely available to
partners for the client end, the same is not true for Access Points.LEAP
and EAP-FAST are essentially two proprietary protocolsthat Cisco employs
as a strategy to monopolize the Access Point market. There are open
standards based EAP mechanisms like EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS, and PEAP which are
all much more secure than either LEAP or EAP-FAST and they work on all
Access Points and client adapters, not just Cisco. Cisco does support open
standard EAPs just like everyone else so you should always use open EAP
standards to get better security and avoid the hardware lock-in.

DHCP installation failure

2008-07-09 Thread Damien Solodow
I have a server I'm attempting to install the DHCP server on and the
install fails saying a file or registry setting is missing.

The server is running Win2k3 with SP2. It's a DC currently running DNS,
WINS and CA.

The weird thing is, according to the event log, the DHCP Server service
gets installed and started. It throws two errors - one about not being
authorized, and the other saying it's a bad idea to run DHCP DNS on a
DC without authentication credentials. Then the service stops, after
which the component install apparently cleans house because it removes
the service and registry entries.

Anyone seen this one before?

Its doesn't matter which type of DNS you're using. This is a vulnerability
in the protocol itself, not in whose implementation of it you like or
dislike.
Earlier this year, professional security research Dan Kaminsky discovered a
major issue in how Internet addresses are managed (Domain Name System, or
DNS). This issue was in the design of DNS and not limited to any single
product.

Windows Media Services - Pause while recording?

2008-07-09 Thread Mike Gill
If anyone knows of a good forum/list for this I would be grateful to know.

I have Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise 32bit and am using Windows Media
Encoder to record audio and video content from a capture card. This is
content is being recorded to the hard drive and not pushed to Windows Media
Services. Then I have an On Demand WMS publishing point set up to use the
recorded file as a source. As far as I can tell, this is how you must
proceed if you want to use the pause/FF/RW feature of WMP. I can connect
from other computers using WMP and view the content.

My problem is, I can't pause the content if the recording is still in
progress. I only have stop as an option and if I do that I must start over.
If I stop the encoder and reconnect from one of the clients, I can pause and
fast forward. I'm recording a live meeting which is simulcasted to our
location. In case we start a few minutes late, I want to be able to pause
the player at the beginning and resume when ready.

I'm I doing this wrong?

I have one user that is having trouble logging off our TS. When she closes her
app it is supposed to close the session but it doesnt. It only happens to her,
she just gets a blue screen and has to ctrl-alt-end to log off. I looked at the
logs on the server and her PC but dont see anything and I tried deleting her
profile on the TS to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions to what I should
look for? It happens no matter what PC she uses.

James

New server can't see domain

2008-07-09 Thread Bob Peitzke
I set up a new Win2K3-R2 server recently and while it can ping respond, it
can't see the domain. I dissolved the NIC team and assigned static IP to NIC
1, no change. I noticed that in the LAN connection properties Client for MS
Netowrks and FP Sharing are unchecked. When I check them it pops up a box
saying, Your current selection will also disable the following components:
(and lists these two). DISable, but I checked them to ENable !!!

No relevant events. I'm about ready to blow it away reinstall, unless
anyone has any suggestions. It's a ProLiant DL380-G2, updated with Firmware
Maint 8.0.

RE: New server can't see domain

2008-07-09 Thread lists
What does your local DNS show regarding the new server? What do DCDIAG
and NETDiag tell you? What do the DCs logs tell you about the new
server? Easy thing to do first is disjoin and rejoin the domain as
long as it's not already a DC. Logs will tell you the problem.

Cheers.

I set up a new Win2K3-R2 server recently and while it can ping
respond, it can't see the domain. I dissolved the NIC team and assigned
static IP to NIC 1, no change. I noticed that in the LAN connection
properties Client for MS Netowrks and FP Sharing are unchecked. When I
check them it pops up a box saying, Your current selection will also
disable the following components: (and lists these two). DISable, but I
checked them to ENable !!!

No relevant events. I'm about ready to blow it away reinstall, unless
anyone has any suggestions. It's a ProLiant DL380-G2, updated with
Firmware Maint 8.0.

It's a member server. Sorry, shoulda made that clear. Removed it from
domain, but can't rejoin domain as it cannot see it. Seems like a protocol
glitch.

RE: New server can't see domain

2008-07-09 Thread Joseph L. Casale
The OP never said it was a DC?

You never mentioned its membership, I assume it's part of a workgroup still? If
that's the case don't you need to wait for the browser service to refresh a
list? What exactly is the behavior your encountering?

If you have teamed the pair of nics, those two items are meant to be unchecked
on the physical nics.
If they remained unchecked when you dissolved the team, I suspect the hp nic
software is still assuming control, or something buggy like that has happened.

Before you blow it out, uninstall the nic software (not the driver) and see if
it works.

Protocol? Nah, more like a simple resolution issue. The obvious is configured
right such as DNS, and your not using a split model and having the server
resolve the dns name erroneously outside for example?

Protocol glitch...NetDiag DCDiag would shed some light there. Check
the DNS server on the DCs or wherever you have it and tell us what your
DNS server(s) know about the new server.

RE: Major DNS protocol issue effecting most implementations of DNS

2008-07-09 Thread Ken Schaefer
And what if the cache of your upstream is a victim of this attack? :-)

So, yes, internally you probably don't have much to fear (unless you have a
malicious employee, or someone else has already come in via some other means
and this is a second part of an attack). But you either need to refer back to
root servers or upstream DNS servers for other zones, and it's possible that
they might be compromised (well, probably not the root servers)

Cheers

So this is pointed more at public name servers, right? Not internal
DNS? I do our internal stuff, but forward everything else to our ISP,
 which is another state agency.

San Recommendations

2008-07-09 Thread Greg Mulholland
Guys

We are in the process of updating our aging and nearly out of warranty Dell
CX300 SAN. We were looking at the CX3-20 as we currently use FC disks. The
CX3-20 would allow us to use FC and Sata with ISCI shelves. The SATA/ISCSI will
be handy for our non production and non critical requirements. We have now
started to look at HP because they are trying to appease us and i would like to
know if anyone has any recommendations on HP san models. This office has about
250-300 users with a pro/non prod requirement for potentially 100tb or near of
space.

We would also like to preferably keep our FC available for the exchange, sql
and oracle use that is our core business. Fwiw the majority of our servers are
broken into vmware ESX hosts (prod and non prod)

Be interested to hear anyone's thoughts.

Greg

RE: San Recommendations

2008-07-09 Thread Martin Blackstone
Greg, will the new SAN allow you to reuse your existing shelves or disks?
I'm not sure if you were alluding to that or not, but obviously if you can,
that would be a huge advantage.
Also, FC rocks, but don't think that ISCSI can't handle your enterprise
applications. Especially with 10GB Ethernet out there.
SATA is also starting to gain a foothold there as well. I'm still not 100%
sold on the later, but its moving up. It also makes for great archival
storage.
