I'll add to this as well, if anyone has any experience using Riverbed vs Cisco
Waas, I'd appreciate hearing your experiences as well.

Anyone care to comment on how riverbed handles afp ? I wasn't able to find much
documentation on their site that talks about optimization for non-smb/http
protocols & wonder if anyone has used it for filesharing between two remote
offices, OsX server/clients.

I used Riverbed in a test environment and was impressed with their performance.
However, the application we were looking to optimize had very little benefit
from the "Caching" that Riverbed uses. That wasn't a failure on their part, it
was the old technology of the application.
For most other data sets, it worked perfect and "as advertised".

I've seen occasional talk about bandwidth management/compression. I'm looking
for an appliance that can do this between my HQ site and second largest site.
Anyone have any experience/recommendations. The two I am familiar with are
Citrix's WANOptimizer and Packeteer (now Blue Coat).

Server 2k3

I've got a couple profiles on my server that are listed as Account
Unknown. The delete button is greyed out for them. I'd like to delete
them, but can't figure out how. When I look under C:\Documents and
Settings, I see two folders there for personnel that have not been with
the organization for a couple of years now. I'm assuming that these
profile folders are the ones showing up as Account Unknown, since they
are not listed otherwise under the Profile list. I tried to manually
delete the folders themselves, but get an error saying the NTUSER.DAT is
being used by another user or program.

Any ideas on how I can get rid of these?

Thanks,

Joe Heaton

Welcome back, man... missed ya around here.

Well, I ended up taking ownership of the profile folders, deleting the old,
non-existent account from the Security tab, and putting me there with full
control, and the delete buttons under the Profile list appeared for me. These
two profiles have been deleted.

Thanks for the help, everyone!

what type of traffic are you trying to accelerate ? Most WAN Optimizers
cache the data stream and remove most of the windowing/handshaking to reduce
the latency ... so your data streams to the destination without two way
delays of 'got that segment, what's the next segment , got that next
segment, what's next now' type of protocols

fileacl.exe will not only export the permissions, it will optionally
do so in the form of a batch file that that you can use to re-apply
them after editing or whatever. It's a very nice tool indeed.

Oops. I didn't notice that you need the filesystem permissions as well.
Dumpsec will do this, but it might be a bit tedious getting the
information for a lot of directories and sorting through it. Srvcheck
will only do the shares.

There was a thread here quite recently that addressed this. Two tools
to do what you're looking for are:

1) Srvcheck.exe from the appropriate Windows resource kit

2) Dumpsec from http://www.somarsoft.com/

Dumpsec gives the option to export the report to csv which you can open
directly in Excel.

Subject: Exporting permissions

I have come across a domain I need to migrate from Win2k ==> Win2k3 but
before we do that we have come across a big problem with the current
file server.

It has not been maintained properly and the permissions are randomly
assigned all over the place. & not documented either.

Some places groups have been used some places users...etc...also within
shares permissions have been shared out to random users and map drives
manually to some shares...The customer is also not at all happy with the
file structure and the Directors have been complaining about it since 1
year.

So the File server has turned out to be a big problem for now & both
parties feel this is the right time to invest in a few man days and get
it sorted

The domain is in such a mess that both parties have agreed it is not
worth migrating and they are starting from scratch on the new domain
i.e. Win2k3.

The plan is to simply export the users and send them to HR for approval
and once done we will import them to the new domain i.e. this will
result in ensuring only valid users are created. They have 12
Administrator accounts currently out of which 5 users don't even work
for them any more and the accounts are still enabled !!!

But for File server what has been agreed is we need to export all the
permissions [ Share + NTFS ] dump it to an excel file for each folder [
i.e. even if they are not shared ] within the file structure. Once this
audit is complete we need to than present this information to the IT
manager and restructure the data in correct shares with new set of drive
letters and get this problem sorted using groups as opposed to
individual users.

So what I am looking for a script / tool of some kind which will dump
this data to a excel file with information as follows

user name / group name *** folder / file location *** permission
assigned ***

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Joe,

Check your permissions on those files "in use" . When I've seen this in
the past, it was due to the account I was logged in with didn't have
full control of the file(s) in question. In that case, I would take
ownership of said files, modify permissions as needed, then kill it.
IME, those files were never in use via some process.

Try from your machine using the manage option My Computer, and manage accounts.
Also, try the C$ share remotely and see if you can rename the old users'
folders.

RE: Account Unknown profiles

2009-05-26 Thread Andy Shook
Joe,
Check your permissions on those files "in use" . When I've seen this in the
past, it was due to the account I was logged in with didn't have full control
of the file(s) in question. In that case, I would take ownership of said
files, modify permissions as needed, then kill it. IME, those files were never
in use via some process.

I've got a couple profiles on my server that are listed as Account Unknown.
The delete button is greyed out for them. I'd like to delete them, but can't
figure out how. When I look under C:\Documents and Settings, I see two folders
there for personnel that have not been with the organization for a couple of
years now. I'm assuming that these profile folders are the ones showing up as
Account Unknown, since they are not listed otherwise under the Profile list. I
tried to manually delete the folders themselves, but get an error saying the
NTUSER.DAT is being used by another user or program.

Any ideas on how I can get rid of these?

Re: Account Unknown profiles

You could try using Process Explorer to find the ntuser.dat file via the
Find function which will show which process or handle has the file(s) open,
then close the handle using the same tool

I take no responsibility if the server BSODs or hangs though :-)

RE: Windows 7 to ship all versions on one medium

2009-05-26 Thread Mike Gill
I just downloaded the Vista SP2 DVD from eOpen. The file is named:

SW_DVD5_Windows_Vista_Business_32BIT_English_Full_Int_SP2_MLF_X15-39889.ISO

Upon running setup.exe, the title window for the license agreement reads:

WINDOWS VISTA BUSINESS SERVICE PACK 2

So at least for me, there is only one version on the disc.

The Volume License Media disc images I have downloaded from eOpen
(or whatever Microsoft's calling it now) offer the option to install
any edition of Vista. You just provide a matching Volume License Key.

Come to think of it... I don't think I've ever actually booted one
of the Dell OEM Vista discs. :) That's one drawback to managed IT,
you loose touch with stuff that isn't your custom environment...

We combat that problem by using double opt-in (confirmed consent) and then
we store the source of the sign up (web form, sweepstakes entry, etc) along
with the date and include that in every email we send.

So it'll say something like "Andy Ognenoff, you subscribed on 5/26/09 as

of course you provide a one-click unsubscribe as well.

I used Riverbed in a test environment and was impressed with their
performance. However, the application we were looking to optimize had
very little benefit from the "Caching" that Riverbed uses. That wasn't a
failure on their part, it was the old technology of the application.

For most other data sets, it worked perfect and "as advertised".

Re: Two Factor Authentication

2009-05-26 Thread Dennis Depp
Robert,

We are using RSA for authentication with OWA (Exchange 2007), Cisco
VPN and access to our intranet from outside. OWA and intranet access
is through a Whale Box which is now Microsoft IAG. The solution works
very well for us.

Thought of another question

Does you implementation have special requirements (Cisco hardware or ISA
server for example)?

RE: Two Factor Authentication

2009-05-26 Thread Cameron Cooper
We have been using the RSA SecurID Tokens and haven't had any issues
with it running ES03 on WS03. Currently, we are only using it for OWA
and for three people to use with a Cisco VPN. The Cisco VPN was a
little challenge to setup and we did have an issue with RSA and
multi-homed servers.

We use RSA and have had zero issues with it. Initial pin setup for
users is a little confusing, I had to walk through 90% of the people
using it(even with directions).

Good morning,

Anybody using two-factor authentication that would care to share
opinions and an overview of how you are using?

We are looking to protect E2K7 OWA, MOSS07, and Terminal Services.

Here are a couple I have found that look promising.
