Re: BES Logs

2010-09-27 Thread Jeff Steward
Indeed. I'm reading Bob Lewis' latest book and then I resolve to crack open
my PowerShell book and get cracking. I did write a simple PowerShell script
tonight to find all of the assorted MS Access databases we have floating
around the network. That's how it starts, one simple script at a time.

Kind of funny too that someone was talking about VNC on another thread, as I
wrote a very simple VNC deployment script about a decade ago that is still
referenced on this website: http://www.darkage.co.uk/howtos/ntrollouts.htm

Now we have GPO =)

2010-09-27 Thread Jon Harris
I don't remember now how long ago it was but MSE was updated in a way that
caused a couple of my garage clients to have me come in and remove and
reinstall the MSE, it would just fail on the auto-upgrade. Since they were
covered for my time I never looked at the cause just did the
uninstall/reinstall dance and all was well. Last time I touched any of
those boxes the clients were still happy with the product and it was
updating correctly.

anyone knows of a truly free VNC type system that supports IPv6 that
wou;ld be great.

Someone mentioned Teamviewer. Unless you pay for it, you cannot use it
for commercial use. I recommend it for personal use, and it works
really well.

I would say that it reached that level as soon as the exploit was publicly
announced. Microsoft appeared to jump on it right away, and I'm hopeful
that the right balance of speed and thoroughness has come into play here.

Repost Latest 0 day in Microsoft ASP.NET to be patched out of band tommorrow

2010-09-27 Thread Ziots, Edward
Repost From Jason Cooper on alternative security list:

Seems like the threat from this one reached the critical level and a
fire was lit under someones behind to make sure the patch was available
accordingly. I would put this pretty high on your patch list if you have
external facing ASP.NET based websites, which will need patching
accordingly.

Microsoft has just announced that we are planning to release an
out-of-band security bulletin tomorrow, September 28, 2010 to address
the recently disclosed vulnerability in ASP.NET.

The full version of the Microsoft Security Bulletin Advance Notification

Re: Bink.nu | Free Microsoft Security Essentials Coming for Small Businesses - Bink.nu

2010-09-27 Thread Steven Peck
MSE doesn't have the problems I have experienced with the other free
alternatives and has worked reliably since I have been having my circle use
it. This is my experience which differs from yours. I am not at all
surprised to see people jumping on this bandwagon.

It's better to attribute malice then a large company that perhaps doesn't
communicate as well as it could on a given area of specialists interest.

Given the special interest of other AV vendors and how some (I will be vague
here because it's en vogue) occasionally got caught in the past doing their
own little suspicious things. People don't watch them, they watch
Microsoft. They obsess over it and cheer when they find the least little
thing. That's a good enough monitor for me.

I suspect the thread has been sufficiently beat to death that the various
viewpoints are now well known.

Re: Bink.nu | Free Microsoft Security Essentials Coming for Small Businesses - Bink.nu

2010-09-27 Thread Micheal Espinola Jr
AV certainly seems like voodoo to a lot of people, but its inaccurate to say
that one free one is as good as any. The tests, shootouts, etc, would
suggest otherwise - as would my own experiences.

MSE is yet another bandwagon that I am surprised to see people so quick to
jump on. I dont see how its got any proven track record that it should be
recommended over other more established free alternatives.

And on top of that, I also agree with the conflict of issues raised with
Microsoft being an OS and AV vendor. Microsoft has been known to
intentionally hide issues with their products. How could one not suspect
that they would not stifle a definition file that would reflect on an issue
with another Microsoft product? I'm not running around thinking the sky is
falling on this one, but it is still a consideration.

RE: Bink.nu | Free Microsoft Security Essentials Coming for Small Businesses - Bink.nu

2010-09-27 Thread Carl Houseman
The free versions of AVG, Avast and Avira all score better than MSE
(virusbtn.com RAP averages chart). As for noisiness or overhead, MSE just
about killed my old P4-1.7 512MB laptop during updates, but with AVG it's
only as slow as it should be. I've heard others with similar complaints
about MSE.

So yes, it's better than nothing, but other than that, a disadvantage
compared to the other well-known same-priced alternatives. I could say
something positive about it if it was installed by default, the same way MS
installs IE by default, because I agree that AV that doesn't stop working
should be standard equipment on Windows. But they haven't done that yet.
Windows should prompt the user about AV at first startup the same way it
prompts about firewall and automatic updates.

I absolutely encourage residential users to install MSE - because 75% of them

RE: Bink.nu | Free Microsoft Security Essentials Coming for Small Businesses - Bink.nu

2010-09-27 Thread Mike Gill
On your past statement of; it's not adequate for reckless behavior. Nothing
is. If you go looking for trouble, you're going to find it. The arguments
here are strange. Some say, you shouldn't use it because MS makes both the
OS and the AV. But couldn't that also make them the ideal org to make the AV
software? Some say it doesn't compare to top tier AV products. Like what?
Norton? McaFee? Seem like every malware infested home computer I get has a
"top tier" commercial product protecting it.

AV is voodoo. It's a dark art. No AV out there is 100%. But as the free ones
go, for personal or SoHo, MSSE is as good as any. I don't have to deal with
a bunch of people calling once a year to update their AVG that only mentions
the commercial product when a new version comes out, or the full screen once
a day banner ads Avira tosses at you.

If none of that matters to you, use Comodo. It's free for personal or
commercial use per it's license.

RE: vSphere Switch Config Query

2010-09-27 Thread N Parr
They store all their configs in volatile memory and never write them to
ROM.
Seriously it depends of if you want to keep operations running if you
lose a switch. We have a pair of nics in each host for each operation
you mentioned split across multiple stacked switches. You don't
dedicate a switch to iSCSI or Vmotion but just split them across
different physical switches so you lose one and keep running. You start
adding up all the ports you need and you'll probably have to get another
switch anyway.

Those of you that are using iSCSI storage, vMotion and Fault Tolerance,
what sort of physical switch config are you using please?

We're only talking a couple of hosts and somehow it seems like overkill
having a separate switch for iSCSI and a separate switch for the vSphere

RE: vSphere Switch Config Query

2010-09-27 Thread Paul Hutchings
Stacking is certainly an option. It's tied in with my question about
active/active site configs and whilst I wouldn't want to skimp for the sakes of
couple of switches, if you're putting a 10gbps link between sites unless you go
nuts it seems you're kind of screwed even with a stack if the switch that has
the fibre link fails.

I am genuinely curious in this kind of setup what differentiates say, Procurve
or Cisco from who I always think of as more niche i.e. Extreme Networks (to
pick a semi-random one).

I think Picasa's best feature is the way it handles edits: all changes are
written to an .ini file so the original file is never modified. It's easy

RE: vSphere Switch Config Query

2010-09-27 Thread Andy Shook
In all seriousness, it would depend on the switch backplane. I see no reason
why this all couldn't go on a single switch, however, with iSCSI the network is
really your platform. I'd like to have some flavor of stacked switches with a
dedicated stacking backplane. This can be done with Cisco, Dell, HP,
whomever...

You can put this all on one switch as long as that one switch is Cisco. HP
"switches" wouldn't work well, they only have web scale. :)

Looking at vSphere and a bunch of options we don't currently use so I'm
investigating switch config.

Those of you that are using iSCSI storage, vMotion and Fault Tolerance, what
sort of physical switch config are you using please?

We're only talking a couple of hosts and somehow it seems like overkill having
a separate switch for iSCSI and a separate switch for the vSphere traffic.

Thanks

RE: Bink.nu | Free Microsoft Security Essentials Coming for Small Businesses - Bink.nu

2010-09-27 Thread Joseph L. Casale
I use Forefront and MSE at home etc and while I like Microsoft (I don't wear
any fanboy hats for any OS/Vendor) I can say at least this:

1. Their security software isn't as good as most other top vendors, it
misses much more (from experience, not opinion).

2. I migrated away from a supposedly good vendor as their support was
useless and the fp's/problems it _also_ added was worse and made my life
miserable.

3. I have *NEVER* had an fp with mse or Forefront.

Give a little get a little I suppose? What's worse, coming in tomorrow morning
to find the entire domain down from a shitty dat that wreaked havoc or a
rampant malware loose from lack of detection?

Dunno, but if I had things my way, I would use Forerfont on the desktops as a
result of its flawless "non breaking" track record and a different vendors av
on a gateway and mailserver preventing anything from getting in.

On anything truly important, it's on its own private segment without external
media available for use:)

I don't follow what you mean here. My gripe is home-users using MSE with a
sense of assurance of adequate protection.

For the record, I don't hate Microsoft. But I have a couple of axes to
grind against a couple of their product groups - just as I do with other
companies.

One other thing -- for MSE to work and update, "Automatic Updates" have
 to be
completely enabled. I don't do this for work PCs as I don't want an
 entire
company to go down when MS pushes out a bad update.

RE: BES Logs

2010-09-27 Thread Michael B. Smith
Well, this is where it starts to get a little fun - taking a script and turning
it into a full-blown reporting application. :-P

The problem, at heart, is that the logs are CSV files, and Select-String
doesn't return a "simple string" (i.e., a line of text). Instead, it returns
something called a "match object" which is the result from a regular expression
search.

Your first line of output needs to be the CSV header from the first log file,
and then you need to output ONLY the ToString() output from each match object.
Don't use export-csv, because the files are ALREADY a CSV.

Hint, untested but it'll go something very much like this:

$logs = Get-ChildItem '\\serverName\d$\Research in
Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Logs\*' -Recurse -Include PhoneCallLog*.csv
$logHeader = gc $logs[0] -TotalCount 1
$results = $logs | Select-String -SimpleMatch -Pattern "Steven Peck"
$outputArray = @()
$outputArray += $logHeader
foreach( $result in $results )
{
$outputArray += $result.Line
}
$outputArray | out-file -encoding ascii filename.csv
### yes, I believe in cleaning up after myself
$outputArray = $null
$results = $null
$logs = $null

so yes. this works but is still not as pretty as it could be.

PS:\> Get-ChildItem '\\serverName\d$\Research in Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise
Server\Logs\*' -Recurse -Include PhoneCallLog*.csv | Select-String -SimpleMatch
-Pattern "Steven Peck" | export-csv ./filename.csv -NoTypeInformation

When exploring, I tend to stick things in variables so I can play with them.

PS:\> $logs = Get-ChildItem '\\serverName\d$\Research in Motion\BlackBerry
Enterprise Server\Logs\*' -Recurse -Include PhoneCallLog*.csv | Select-String
-SimpleMatch -Pattern "Steven Peck"

PS:> $logs | Get-Memeber -memberType Property
Name MemberType Definition
   -- --
ContextProperty Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.MatchInfoContext Context
{get;set;}
Filename   Property   System.String Filename {get;}
IgnoreCase Property   System.Boolean IgnoreCase {get;set;}
Line   Property   System.String Line {get;set;}
LineNumber Property   System.Int32 LineNumber {get;set;}
MatchesProperty   System.Text.RegularExpressions.Match[] Matches {get;set;}
Path   Property   System.String Path {get;set;}
PatternProperty   System.String Pattern {get;set;}

About the only thing that seems interesting to me are Line, Filename, and
Pattern
Line because it has the match, filename as it has the log file date and pattern
to remind myself what I was searching for.

PS:> $logs | Select Filename, Pattern, Line -first 5
that shows if it's what I want.

PS:> $logs | Select Filename, Pattern, Line | Export-Csv ./file.csv
-NoTypeInformation

Trivia you need -NoTypeInformation or dotNet puts a type line as the first
entry in the file.

Now that gets you a lot of the way there, but Line still would benefit from
being parsed out. I am pretty sure there is a way to split it up but don't
have time to play with it this morning. I put it on my white board as a follow
up just because knowing how would be useful later.

oh, you can skip the variable and just do this

PS:\> Get-ChildItem '\\serverName\d$\Research in Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise
Server\Logs\*' -Recurse -Include PhoneCallLog*.csv | Select-String -SimpleMatch
-Pattern "Steven Peck" | Select Filename, Pattern, Line | Export-Csv ./file.csv
-NoTypeInformation

I thought I would show you how I arrived at this though. Micheal may have a
way better way to get to this point, but I'm not there yet. I put some good
PowerShell links in a block on my website, free eBook, collection of blogs and
such. I am adding to it as I find things.

Oh, this is so much easier using find (Unix version) or findstr
 (cmd.exe version). Such as:

 Cd /d c:\log-file-directory

 findstr /i /s /c:”literal-search-string”
 PhoneCallLog*.csv

 PowerShell would go something like:

 Get-ChildItem c:\log-file-directory\* -recurse –include
 PhoneCallLog*.csv | select-string –simplematch –pattern
 “literal-search-string”

You can do a LOT more with the PowerShell command(s), but in this simple
case, cmd.exe is easier to use.

Logs Directory each day has a folder with the date (20100923) then the
phone log is PhoneCalllog_20100923.csv, I would just like to search for

Picasa is super easy to use. It does facial recognition/matching, which opens
up a whole new world of automatically sorting photos.

But, as far as categorization being based off of meta data, well, no. But you
can tag the crap out of your pictures.

Anyone have a favorite, that just blows away anything else you've used?

Free would be good, as the state still doesn't have a budget, and therefore, we
have no money/spending authority.

Was just looking at the website for Ultradefrag. Anyone play with it before?

Our server environment is more and more Server 2008 R2, with 2008 and 2003
thrown in for flava.

My main goal for this is the defrag of a couple of disk arrays we have for our
backup system. They are served up as drives on our physical backup server,
which is running 2003 R2 x64 SP2. Both of these drive arrays are 10TB in size,
with most of that space being used.

Depends on my availability. But, honestly, I have fixed so many other
peoples wiring mistakes that its one of those few things that I would truly
rather do myself. Most issues I find are at the punch - at work and at

Plus, I find it one of the few relaxing yet monotonous things to do. But,
I've been a telco nerd since I was a kid, so I guess that goes with the
territory.

RE: Has anyone see this before with GPRESULT

2010-09-27 Thread Brian Desmond
OK I'm a little confused because you mentioned that you have different OS
versions involved.

Are you saying you have say two XP SP3 machines side-by-side which gpresult is
behaving differently on?

Well they are an image from the vendor, and from our machines, we are seeing
different things. I am going to scan it from my Windows 7 machine and see
wassup, but the computer accounts are in the OU they are supposed to be when I
run the dsquery computer command, so confident that the computer is in its

If you're getting different results on the same platform/service pack I can go

Running GPRESULT remotely from my Windows 7 and XP machines to check out the
group policy of a workstation that GE Medical systems says isnt working
accordingly.

We pre populated the computer accounts in the OU's they specified, but at one
hospital when we do a GPresult against a remote machine it shows the OU path
under the computer settings. At another hospital it doesn't, but both show they
are getting the GPO they are assigned, and when a do a dsquery computer
PATH_TO_OU all the computer accounts show accordingly.

Has anyone seen this before? Something to worry about ( since it seems the

troubles), and note this all happened after an upgrade.

Any ideas?

It's a little cumbersome to me as an FTP server. (That's not to say that MS
FTP isn't cumbersome, but there are other options)

It's an awesome FTP client, though.

No! When I started here people were crimping RJ45 connectors on solid
conductor wire. Works for awhile, until you unplug and plug them in a
few times, then the insulation loosens up and you get intermittent

company did the coax. That was a 2-3 week job. Some of the runs were 4
stories, communicating with coworker via walkie-talkie (cell didn't work
in basement location where patch panel was). That may have scared me
straight from ever doing cabling again.

I *think* that's a cable TV headend or similar IP-to-coax distribution
center. So not much call for new runs on the main distribution frame
there.

Re: Bink.nu | Free Microsoft Security Essentials Coming for Small Businesses - Bink.nu

2010-09-27 Thread James Rankin
In my experience, it's often just the odd few, rather than the whole lot,
that get problems with Windows Updates. Even if the machines are all
identical.

For all the small offices I "support", turning on AU and re-imaging the odd
one is better than exposing them, in my opinion. Some of these "clients"
have my details on their systems, and I'd sooner they were patched ASAP. If
I had the option, though, WSUS would be installed on-site and I'd wait a few
days before releasing.

RE: Bink.nu | Free Microsoft Security Essentials Coming for Small Businesses - Bink.nu

2010-09-27 Thread Alan Davies
Really? Compared to the mess the world is in because of Dell and all
the other big guys bundling 3 month trials of commercial AV products
that almost no one ever pays for, therefore by many orders of magnitude
leaving the Internet a dirty, dangerous place to be!?

Please please please MS put this on every PC and all those anti-trust
fools keep quiet. By all means stick a screen in saying you can pay for
more protection with products such as xyz, but here is a free one if
not! Should have been part of Windows since day 1.

We talk in security about low hanging fruit. The features of commercial
packages are WAY up high in the upper branches compared to the state of
the average PC with no functional AV. MSE on every computer unless
chosen not to would be absolute Nirvana from the status quo!

Rant over ;o)

Which goes back to my opinion of it for the residential/consumer. Its
not adequate protection for the generally reckless and uninformed
behavior of the general public.

As for work, that's why Microsoft provides WSUS so you can

One other thing -- for MSE to work and update,

don't want an entire
